Misconstructing Sexuality In Same-Sex Marriage Jurisprudence, Jeffrey Kosbie Jan 2011

Misconstructing Sexuality In Same-Sex Marriage Jurisprudence, Jeffrey Kosbie

Northwestern Journal of Law & Social Policy

Drawing on sociology, queer studies, and legal scholarship, this Comment develops a textual methodology to study sexuality in court opinions. In particular, this methodology uses inconsistencies between opinions to highlight how courts rely on cultural assumptions. This Comment applies this methodology to eighteen state same-sex marriage cases, identifying four analytic models of sexuality: sexuality consists only of behaviors; sexuality belongs to lesbians and gays; society should regulate sexuality; and marriage forms a normatively desirable model for sexuality. These models contribute significantly to public discourse over the meaning of sexuality. Applying sociological insights to narrow judicial models of sexuality suggests that …

Agate Fossil Beds National Monument Plant Community Composition And Structure Monitoring, Isabel W. Ashton, Michael Prowatzke, Michael R. Bynum, Tim Shepherd, Stephen K. Wilson, Kara Paintner-Green

United States National Park Service: Publications

The Northern Great Plains Inventory & Monitoring Network (NGPN) was established to develop and provide scientifically credible information on the current status and long-term trends of the composition, structure, and function of ecosystems in thirteen parks located in five northern Great Plains states. NGPN identified upland plant communities, exotic plant early detection, and riparian lowland communities as vital signs that can be used to better understand the condition of terrestrial park ecosystems (Gitzen et al. 2010). Upland and riparian ecosystems are important targets for vegetation monitoring because the status and trends in plant communities provide critical insights into the status …

Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve, Vegetation Mapping Project [Poster], Kelly Kindscher, Hayley Kilroy, Jennifer Delisle, Quinn Long, Hillary Loring, Kevin Dobbs, Jim Drake

United States National Park Service: Publications

The Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve encompasses 10,894 acres in eastern Kansas, just north of Strong City. This park unit was created on November 12, 1996, and is the first to protect a nationally significant example of the once vast tall grass prairie ecosystem. Of the 400,000 square miles of tall grass prairie that once covered the North American continent, less than four percent remains, prin1arily in the Flint Hills. The park unit is primarily rocky upland prairies and deep-soiled prairies in the lowlands. It also contains some wet prairie ravines, riparian forests and some former cropland and restored prairie. These …

Effects Of Xs® Energy Drink On Aerobic Exercise Capacity Of Athletes, Kevin M. Sheehan, Lynn K. Hartzler Jan 2011

Effects Of Xs® Energy Drink On Aerobic Exercise Capacity Of Athletes, Kevin M. Sheehan, Lynn K. Hartzler

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

A small increase in performance is often the difference between winning and losing for athletes, and energy supplements are marketed to give them a competitive edge. One such supplement is XS® Energy Drink which contains B vitamins, caffeine, taurine, and an herbal adaptogen blend. XS® Energy Drink is primarily designed and marketed as an alertness stimulus; however, it is also marketed to athletes as a performance enhancing supplement. The hypothesis of this investigation was that the consumption of XS® Energy Drink before exercise would increase aerobic capacity (an increase in Vo2max) and time to fatigue, and would decrease time for …

A Unified Framework Fro Managing Provenance Information In Translational Research, Satya S. Sahoo, Vinh Nguyen, Olivier Bodenreider, Priti Parikh, Todd Minning, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

Background

A critical aspect of the NIH Translational Research roadmap, which seeks to accelerate the delivery of "bench-side" discoveries to patient's "bedside," is the management of the provenance metadata that keeps track of the origin and history of data resources as they traverse the path from the bench to the bedside and back. A comprehensive provenance framework is essential for researchers to verify the quality of data, reproduce scientific results published in peer-reviewed literature, validate scientific process, and associate trust value with data and results. Traditional approaches to provenance management have focused on only partial sections of the translational research …

Integrating Aircrew Resources Variability Into The Design Of Future Cockpit, Barbara Mawhin, Philippe Cabon, Florence Buratto Jan 2011

Integrating Aircrew Resources Variability Into The Design Of Future Cockpit, Barbara Mawhin, Philippe Cabon, Florence Buratto

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2011

Cockpit design may have major consequences on future pilot’s tasks. Functions needed to ensure flight safety are shared between pilots and aircraft systems. Today, cockpits are designed considering a theoretical minimum level of crew resources availability although it is widely acknowledged that availability of crew resources may vary from time to time because of aircrew internal state. Therefore, it is crucial to ensure that future cockpits are designed while taking into consideration this variability. This work aims at developing a methodology enabling designer to systematically integrate crew resources availability in the design process. In order to assess the impact of …

The Effect Of Prenatal Care And Other Factors On Preterm Births In Montgomery County 2007-2009, Leslie A. Schmieder

Master of Public Health Program Student Publications

Introduction Preterm birth is defined as a baby who is born before 37 weeks of pregnancy. Problems with preterm birth include an increased risk for health complications throughout life as well as having significantly more medical expenses compared to a full term infant. Prenatal care has shown to decrease the risk for preterm birth nationally. The objective of this project was to analyze prenatal care and other risk and demographic factors to determine their association with preterm birth in Montgomery County.

Method Data used included the 2007-2009 Montgomery County Birth Certificate Data for mothers who had singleton births. The Kessner …

Cyclopentadienone Conversions To Terephthalates And Cycloadditions Of Alkynes And Azides, Sarah E. Bragg Jan 2011

Cyclopentadienone Conversions To Terephthalates And Cycloadditions Of Alkynes And Azides, Sarah E. Bragg

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Cyclopentadienone derivatives can be converted via a Diels-Alder reaction to multifunctional terephthalate derivatives, which can then be converted to poly(phenylene vinylene) derivatives. It was demonstrated that terephthalate derivatives can be simply and reproducibly synthesized from 2,5-diethoxycarbonyl-3,4-diphenylcyclopentadienone with a variety of acetylenes, having yields ranging from 63% to quantitative yields. The terephthalate derivatives synthesized varied from oils to crystalline solids, but were readily isolated and generally had high rates of completion despite expected steric factors. Terephthalate derivatives with pendent acetylenes were formed in reactions with as low as a 3:1 ratio of diacetylene to cyclopentadienone. A terephthalate derivative with a pendent …

Novel Trisubstituted Arylidene Oxindoles With Potent Anti-Apoptotic Properties, Paul J. Repasky Jan 2011

Novel Trisubstituted Arylidene Oxindoles With Potent Anti-Apoptotic Properties, Paul J. Repasky

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Apoptosis is a highly complex, multi-step cellular pathway utilized to initiate cell suicide. The family of enzymes largely responsible for the process is the cystienyl aspartic acid proteases (caspases). This study details the design and synthesis of a new class of small molecule caspase inhibitors, namely arylidene oxindoles, which are comparable to the isatin family of inhibitors but which offer the advantage of incorporating three points of variability into the basic scaffold. Moreover, whereas the mode of action of isatins against caspases has been demonstrated to involve nucleophilic addition of the cysteine residue of the enzymes to the C-3 ketone …

Preparing For Secondary Inclusion: What Educators Can Learn From Parents Of Students With Disabilities, Denise Ousley, Chris O'Brien Jan 2011

Preparing For Secondary Inclusion: What Educators Can Learn From Parents Of Students With Disabilities, Denise Ousley, Chris O'Brien

Electronic Journal for Inclusive Education

As part of a movement toward collaboration between general and special education teacher preparation, the authors met with focus groups including parents of teenagers with disabilities, English and special education teachers, and pre-service teachers from both programs. Some of our most relevant findings sprang from conversations with parents whose children were placed in inclusive settings. The issues that surfaced highlight several issues relevant to teacher development and support. Most remarkable is the clarification that there are two worlds of education: school for the masses and school for the exceptions. The purpose of this article is to present what we learned …

Are Wild Birds Important In The Transport Of Arthropod-Borne Viruses?, Charles R. Brown, Valerie A. O'Brien

Ornithological Monographs

The encephalitic arthropod-borne viruses (arboviruses) can cause a variety of serious human and wildlife diseases, including eastern equine encephalomyelitis, western equine encephalomyelitis, St. Louis encephalitis, Japanese encephalitis, and West Nile neuroinvasive disease. Understanding how these pathogens are dispersed through the environment is important both in managing their health-related impact and in interpreting patterns of their genetic variability over wide areas. Because many arboviruses infect wild birds and can be amplified to a level that makes birds infectious to insect vectors, numerous workers have suggested that the movements of migratory birds represent a major way that these viruses can be transported …
