Getting To Green: Niche-Driven Or Government-Led Entrepreneurship And Sustainability In The Wine Industry, Lauretta Frederking
Getting To Green: Niche-Driven Or Government-Led Entrepreneurship And Sustainability In The Wine Industry, Lauretta Frederking
New England Journal of Entrepreneurship
Through the framework of Michael Porter’s five forces, this article compares sustainability in the Oregon and British Columbia wine industries. After describing the contrasting characteristics of the green niche model and the government-led model of environmental change, the article analyzes the emerging challenges for each type of change. The distinct sources for profitability and future innovation suggests diversity within the sustainability movement and two very different processes of translating environmental values into entrepreneurial practice.
Limits On Hard-To-Reproduce Inventions: Process Elements And Biotechnology's Compliance With The Enablement Requirement, Dmitry Karshtedt
Limits On Hard-To-Reproduce Inventions: Process Elements And Biotechnology's Compliance With The Enablement Requirement, Dmitry Karshtedt
UC Law Science and Technology Journal
In the recently decided case of Abbott Laboratories v. Sandoz, Inc., the Federal Circuit resolved a long-standing split of authority between its panels by holding that a claim to a product that includes process elements (a "product-byprocess" claim) is infringed only if the product is made using that process. This article advances the proposal that product-by-process claims can help patentees meet the enablement requirement of the Patent Act, while still offering a reasonably broad scope of protection. For claims to new materials whose behavior and utility can be highly process-dependent and whose structure cannot be fully ascertained by analytical methods …
Designing A Middle School Gifted Education Program Of Excellence Using Current Gifted Programming Models, Samantha Ann Miller
Designing A Middle School Gifted Education Program Of Excellence Using Current Gifted Programming Models, Samantha Ann Miller
Dissertations
In 2004, the National Association for Gifted Children and the National Middle School Association collaborated to create a joint position statement supporting the educational needs of all middle school students, including those of high potential and ability. Since the creation of this position statement, research demonstrates that little has been done to further the understanding and development of middle school gifted adolescents and corresponding educational programming that meets the gifted adolescents’ needs. This study sought to provide clarity concerning the organization of middle school gifted programming and the components that contribute to the excellence of programs according to the perceptions …

Youth Movement: Building Assets Of Community For School Reform, Ethan Johnson, Andraé Brown
Black Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations
Social capital can be used to measure the health and wellness of a community. Through an ethnographic account of one school and community in Northern California, we demonstrate how social and economic forces diminished this community’s social capital and consequently its health. We also show how one community-based organization took into account this larger social and economic context to develop creative interventions to address interracial violence within a school. Their efforts built trust, increased social networks and accountability, which resulted in empowering previously marginalized members of the community. Organizers encouraged counselors to work creatively to expand their scope of their …
Insect Abundance And Variability In An Urban-Rural Landscape And Comparison To Foraging Habitat Selection Of Bats, Nicole Oehler
Insect Abundance And Variability In An Urban-Rural Landscape And Comparison To Foraging Habitat Selection Of Bats, Nicole Oehler
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
I conducted a study of the relationship between prey availability and foraging habitat selection of Indiana bats (Myotis sodalis), big brown bats (Eptesicus fuscus), eastern red bats (Lasiurus borealis) and evening bats (Nycticeius humeralis) in an urban-rural landscape matrix of southwestern Indianapolis. Insects were collected from nine different habitat types found within the range of these species. Insect data were collected from 2006 to 2008 using sticky traps placed in each habitat type. Habitat types were ranked by importance to each bat species (based on previous studies) and then compared to the average number of prey insects captured per habitat …

Histological examination s of Great Bay oysters have also revea led other endoparasites.
Magnetite Nanoparticles For Medical Mr Imaging, Zachary R. Stephen, Forrest M. Kievit, Miqin Zhang
Magnetite Nanoparticles For Medical Mr Imaging, Zachary R. Stephen, Forrest M. Kievit, Miqin Zhang
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has become one of the most widely used and powerful tools for non-invasive clinical diagnosis due to its high soft tissue contrast, spatial resolution, and penetration depth1. In addition, images are acquired without the use of ionizing radiation or radiotracers that would cause unwanted harmful side-effects. A considerable amount of research in medical MR imaging is focused on the development of contrast agents that can provide better delineation between healthy and diseased tissue. Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) are a major class of nanoscale material currently under extensive development for improved diagnosis of a wide range of diseases, …

Democratic Education Only For Some: Secondary Schooling In Northern Uganda, Philip Kelly, Stephen Odama
Democratic Education Only For Some: Secondary Schooling In Northern Uganda, Philip Kelly, Stephen Odama
Curriculum, Instruction, and Foundational Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations
This article analyzes the effects of the political, social and cultural contexts of secondary education in northern Uganda. Specifically, the authors examine interactions between several factors with the schooling system, including
- post-colonial curriculum,
- centralized examination system,
- several decades of war and instability,
- poverty, and
- intra-national and inter-tribal prejudice and discrimination.
Informing the analysis is the fact that Uganda is a democracy and thus has certain democratic responsibilities to its children and students. To explore these issues, the lenses of democratic theory and critical theory are employed.
Pedagogies Of Race: The Politics Of Whiteness In An African American Studies Course, Regina V. Jones
Pedagogies Of Race: The Politics Of Whiteness In An African American Studies Course, Regina V. Jones
Ethnic Studies Review
This paper evaluates students' arguments for a color-blind society to avoid discussions related to the continued existence of racism in USA culture. Relatedly, this writer finds that as an black woman her status as facilitator in the classroom is directly challenged, on occasion, and that race and gender play a primary role in students' perception of classroom material and how she is perceived. Classroom discussions related to historical texts reveal that structures of domination have slanted perception of black and white people in U.S. culture. Finally, a key to open dialogue about race and racism, primarily for white students, is …
"We Are Joined Together Temporarily" The Tragic Mulatto, Fusion Monster In Lee Frost's The Thing With Two Heads, Justin Ponder
"We Are Joined Together Temporarily" The Tragic Mulatto, Fusion Monster In Lee Frost's The Thing With Two Heads, Justin Ponder
Ethnic Studies Review
In Lee Frost's 1972 film The Thing with Two Heads, a white bigot unknowingly has his head surgically grafted onto the body of a black man. From that moment on, these two personalities compete for control of their shared body with ridiculous results. Somewhere between horror and comedy, this Blaxploitation film occupies a strange place in interracial discourse. Throughout American literature, the subgenre of tragic mulatto fiction has critiqued segregation by focusing on the melodramatic lives of those divided by the color line. Most tragic mulatto scholarship has analyzed overtly political novels written by African American writers from the Reconstruction …
Elimination Theory For Nonlinear Parameter Estimation, John Chiasson, Ahmed Oteafy
Elimination Theory For Nonlinear Parameter Estimation, John Chiasson, Ahmed Oteafy
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
The work presented here exploits elimination theory (solving systems of polynomial equations in several variables) [1][2] to perform nonlinear parameter identification. In particular show how this technique can be used to estimate the rotor time constant and the stator resistance values of an induction machine. Although the example here is restricted to an induction machine, parameter estimation is applicable to many practical engineering problems. In [3], L. Ljung has outlined many of the challenges of nonlinear system identification as well as its particular importance for biological systems. In these types of problems, the model developed for analysis is typically a …
The Social Construction Of Self, Kenneth J. Gergen
The Social Construction Of Self, Kenneth J. Gergen
Psychology Faculty Works
This article evaluates the view that the self is social constructed. It explains that a social constructionist approach to the self is critical insofar as it targets many of the traditional conceptions of self under discussion in this volume. It analyses the primary use of the term self in psychological and mental discourse, suggesting many ways in which the sources of knowledge about the realm of the mental are open to question. It cites the work of Michel Foucault and others who develop a sustained critique of what may be the dark side of the construction of the self as …

A Landscape Perspective On Bird Beak Deformity: An Epizootic Of Unknown Etiology, Rachelle Mclaughlin, Shaily Menon
Student Summer Scholars Manuscripts
Although birds with beak deformities have been documented throughout the literature, the recent spike in occurrences in certain regions has caused concern in the scientific community. A major concern relates to the role of contaminants and environmental degradation in causing or exacerbating this epizootic. This study used spatial and statistical analyses to examine the problem from a landscape perspective. The objectives of this study were to 1) locate and compile a database of known bird beak occurrences, 2) conduct a preliminary assessment of the environmental correlates of this epizootic in order to identify patterns, and 3) make recommendations that could …

Don’T Spray The Wasps! Using Polistes Paper Wasps For Pest Management In The Home Garden, Laura Goldsmith, Michael Henshaw
Student Summer Scholars Manuscripts
Pest control poses a challenge to all gardeners, especially those wishing to use organic practices. We examined the potential use of Polistes paper wasps as a bio-control agent in the organic backyard garden. Polistes are important predatory insects which may potentially consume thousands of soft bodied pest insects per season. We planted 8 garden plots with leaf lettuce, cabbage, pole beans and tomatoes. In 4 experimental plots, we established 8 Polistes dominulus nests, while in the remaining control plots we did not establish wasp nests. We measured the abundance of pest insects, the extent of damage from insect pests, and …
No Difference?: An Analysis Of Same-Sex Parenting, George W. Dent
No Difference?: An Analysis Of Same-Sex Parenting, George W. Dent
Faculty Publications
The principal argument for traditional marriage is that it is uniquely beneficial to children. The campaign for same-sex marriage (“SSM”) denies this argument and claims that same-sex couples are just as good as other parents; there is “no difference” between the two. This article analyzes this claim and concludes that it is unsubstantiated and almost certainly false.
Rethinking Prayer And Health Research: An Exploratory Inquiry On Prayer’S Psychological Dimension, Adrian Andreescu
Rethinking Prayer And Health Research: An Exploratory Inquiry On Prayer’S Psychological Dimension, Adrian Andreescu
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies
A brief literature review of cancer survival trials is employed by the author to raise questions
on their design and to bring speculatively into discussion concepts such as “worldview”,
“intentional normative dissociation”, and “psychosomatic plasticity-proneness”. Using prayer’s
psychological dimension as a way to unite such elements opens new fertile perspectives on
the academic study of prayer and health. In this context, it is suggested that a consistent
interdisciplinary research agenda is required in order to understand those biopsychosocial
factors interconnected within the process and outcome of prayer before attempting to
decipher the big answers laying dormant probably within the transpersonal …

Loblolly pine (LP; Pinus taeda L.) is the most economically important tree in the U.S. and a cornerstone species in southeastern forests. However, genomics research on LP and other conifers has lagged behind studies on flowering plants due, in part, to the large size of conifer genomes. As a means to accelerate conifer genome research, we constructed a BAC library for the LP genotype 7-56. The LP BAC library consists of 1,824,768 individually-archived clones making it the largest single BAC library constructed to date, has a mean insert size of 96 kb, and affords 7.6X coverage of the 21.7 Gb …

Transracial Adoption: Promoting Racial Literacy Or Perpetuating Colorblind Racism?, Christine Richardson
Transracial Adoption: Promoting Racial Literacy Or Perpetuating Colorblind Racism?, Christine Richardson
McNair Scholars Research Journal
How do white adoptive parents of black children teach their children to navigate race? In 1994 Congress passed the Multi-Ethnic Placement Act (MEPA) removing race as a consideration in adoptive placements, effectively opening up the pool of adoptable black infants to middle class white couples. Inspired by France Twine’s study on how white members of black/white couples developed “racial literacy,” this qualitative study is based on semi-structured interviews with 20 adoptive parents. My findings show that although parents are open to anti-racist practices, they lack the required insight to follow through. Parents are conflicted between perceptions of how racism operates …
Ethnographic Introduction Of Coping In A Timber-Dependent Community, Levin Welch
Ethnographic Introduction Of Coping In A Timber-Dependent Community, Levin Welch
McNair Scholars Research Journal
The effects of socioeconomic change on individuals is a central theme of sociology. In order to understand how society functions the impacts of social change on individuals must be examined. In extreme cases, where a community’s economy is dependent on a single resource, change can hit hard and fast. Most research on these communities is quantitative and has been successful in identifying social problems associated with resource dependence, but people react in the context of local history and value systems. Most studies have been limited in their examination of this context. This has been recognized by researchers who have argued …
