Work And Mexican American Parent-Adolescent Relationships: The Mediating Role Of Parent Well-Being, Lorey A. Wheeler, Kimberly A. Updegraff
Nebraska Center for Research on Children, Youth, Families, and Schools: Faculty Publications
This study of Mexican American two-parent families (N = 246) examined the role of parents’ well-being (i.e., depressive symptoms, role overload) as a potential mechanism through which parent occupational conditions (i.e., self-direction, hazardous conditions, physical activity, work pressure) are linked to parent-adolescent relationship qualities (i.e., warmth, conflict, disclosure). Depressive symptoms mediated the links between maternal and paternal work pressure and parentadolescent warmth, conflict, and disclosure. For mothers, depressive symptoms also mediated the links between self-direction and mother-adolescent warmth, conflict, and disclosure; for fathers, role overload mediated the links between work pressure and hazardous conditions with fatheradolescent warmth.
Factor Structure Of The Assessment Of Qualitative And Structural Dimensions Of Object Representations (Aor) Scale, Gregory Pouliot
Factor Structure Of The Assessment Of Qualitative And Structural Dimensions Of Object Representations (Aor) Scale, Gregory Pouliot
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Early childhood interactions with parents form parental representations (PR) that have been empirically associated with psychopathology. The Assessment of Qualitative and Structural Dimensions of Object Representations scale (AOR; Blatt et al., 1992) is one measure of PR that benefits from measuring implicit processes and minimizing self-presentation; however, little research has examined its factor structure. The present study used archival data from four previous studies containing clinical and nonclinical samples totaling 722 participants. Individuals were divided into two groups: the first was analyzed using an exploratory factor analysis (EFA), and the second underwent a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) of the EFA …
A Comparative Study Of The Expression Of Line, Mys And Sine Retrotransposon Loci In Somatic And Germ-Line Tissues In Peromyscus Maniculatus, Saedeh J. Sepehri
A Comparative Study Of The Expression Of Line, Mys And Sine Retrotransposon Loci In Somatic And Germ-Line Tissues In Peromyscus Maniculatus, Saedeh J. Sepehri
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
This study was to determine if one or more loci are serving as a master gene for the amplification of LINE, ID, and mys elements, which mobilize via RNA, in Peromyscus maniculatus tissues, by the use of the RT-PCR technique. It was concluded that potentially more than one master gene is responsible for the amplification of LINE and mys in P.maniculatus. RT-PCR products of testes and brain for ID matched that of the BC1 gene, known to be the master gene for ID elements. However, none of the cloned products detected from ovary matched any gene available in the …
Insulin Based Inhibitors Of Human Islet Amyloid Polypeptide (Hiapp) And Their Effect On Aggregation Of Hiapp In The Treatment Of Type Ii Diabetes, Ranadheer R. Pesaru
Insulin Based Inhibitors Of Human Islet Amyloid Polypeptide (Hiapp) And Their Effect On Aggregation Of Hiapp In The Treatment Of Type Ii Diabetes, Ranadheer R. Pesaru
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Human islet amyloid polypeptide protein (hIAPP) is secreted by the pancreas along with insulin and is assumed to play a role in pathological development of type II diabetes. It has 37 amino acids in its sequence. Amyloid is formed due to misfolding of the protein, which is cytotoxic to beta cells in the pancreas of type II diabetic patients. The presence of amyloid deposits is also a characteristic feature of a number of other diseases like Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease. Since insulin has been reported to interact with hIAPP and block amyloid formation, fragments of insulin were synthesized and …
Characterizing The Oligomeric Structure And Catalytic Activity Of The Dihydroorotase And Aspartate Transcarbamoylase From The Bacterium, Bacillus Anthracis, Reshma Kankanala
Characterizing The Oligomeric Structure And Catalytic Activity Of The Dihydroorotase And Aspartate Transcarbamoylase From The Bacterium, Bacillus Anthracis, Reshma Kankanala
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Bacteremia refers to bacterial presence in the blood. Bacterial proliferation in the blood requires that the organism adapt its metabolism to available nutrients. Nucleotide precursors that could be used are present at low levels in the blood, and thus the invading bacteria must rely on de novo nucleotide biosynthesis for survival. The dihydroorotase domain is a key enzyme in pyrimidine biosynthesis and a promising drug target. The genes encoding the dihydroorotase (DHOase) and aspartate transcarbamoylase (ATCase) of Bacillus anthracis (B. anthracis) were cloned for expression in Escherichia coli (E. coli). The proteins were purified by affinity …
Emancipatory Education And Democratic Politics: An Analysis Of The Sociological Imagination In A First Grade Classroom, Ellen Lin
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
This autoethnographic research follows my personal and professional experiences as an elementary teacher reflecting upon the travails and joys that come with journeying toward a more liberating pedagogy and democratic experience along with first grade students. Braced with Freire’s 1970 summoning to resist dehumanization in society and education, I have pursued with disappointment existing democratic and humanizing trails in schools. Excited to exit one district and move to another known as “exceptional” in the region, I found myself even more limited by a tightly controlled system. Unwilling to give up hope, I began in my second year to infuse more …

The Catholic Intellectual Tradition And Its Dynamics, Jean Ehret
The Catholic Intellectual Tradition And Its Dynamics, Jean Ehret
Mission & Culture Publications
Throughout the papers of this book, the CIT appears not to be an abstract concept but a dynamic reality, a powerful source of inspiration for imagining creative ways to face the challenges of life in today’s world. Critical voices question the reference to Catholicism, others to a tradition. While addressing these issues helps to prevent the CIT from becoming the victim from either unreligious or traditionalist misconceptions, a synthetic approach will try to reveal fundamental dynamisms of the CIT that allow to identify it without reducing its inherent complexity and historical diversity, including its expressions yet to come.
Making Your Case: Ten Questions For Departments And Individuals Building An Argument For Work In Discipline-Centered Education, Brian Paul Coppola
Making Your Case: Ten Questions For Departments And Individuals Building An Argument For Work In Discipline-Centered Education, Brian Paul Coppola
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
Excerpt: In our chapter, "Is the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning New to Chemistry?," Dennis Jacobs and I outlined the different ways in which education-focused faculty members have been represented in departments of chemistry (Coppola & Jacobs, 2002). Briefly, these include (a) a long-standing tradition of chemistry professors publishing in the 86-year-old Journal of Chemical Education, (b) the rise of the "chemical educators, " as a division of the American Chemical Society, (c) the growth of the Chemical Education Research community (similar to the disciplinary...
Business As Usual: Business Students' Conceptions Of Ethics, Anna Reid, Paul Taylor, Peter Petocz
Business As Usual: Business Students' Conceptions Of Ethics, Anna Reid, Paul Taylor, Peter Petocz
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
There is continuing debate about how best to teach ethics to students in business, that is, how best to help them to develop the ethical aspects of their future profession. This debate has covered whether to teach ethics, what to teach and whether it has any effect on students' views or future behaviour. For the most part, the views of the students themselves are in the minority. Yet it seems likely that the most effective pedagogical approaches would be those based on students’ own ideas of the nature of ethics and the role of ethical considerations in their studies and …

Unpredictability In Patent Law And Its Effect On Pharmaceutical Innovation, Christopher M. Holman
Unpredictability In Patent Law And Its Effect On Pharmaceutical Innovation, Christopher M. Holman
Faculty Works
In recent years, the major innovator pharmaceutical companies have experienced two pronounced and significant trends: a decreasing output of innovative new drugs and cutbacks in research and development (R&D) investment. The two phenomena probably are not unrelated and raise significant concerns for a society intent upon providing affordable health care for an aging population. While the root causes of these trends are complex and diverse, we should not overlook the critical role patents play in creating the necessary incentives for the substantial investment required to develop pharmaceutically-interesting chemical compounds into actual drugs and to take them through the clinical trials …

Estimating The Impact Of Human Papillomavirus (Hpv) Vaccination On Hpv Prevalence And Cervical Cancer Incidence In Mali, Leree Tracy, Holly Gaff, Colleen Burgess, Samba Sow, Patti E. Gravitt, J. Kathleen Tracy
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Human papillomavirus vaccines have potential to reduce cervical cancer incidence and mortality; however, cultural and economic barriers may hinder success in developing countries. We assessed impact of a single vaccine campaign in Mali with use of mathematical modeling. Our model shows that decreases in the prevalence of Human papillomavirus infection are proportional to achieved vaccination coverage.

Evolution Of The Actin Gene Family In Testate Lobose Amoebae (Arcellinida) Is Characterized By Two Distinct Clades Of Paralogs And Recent Independent Expansions, Daniel J.G. Lahr, Truc B. Nguyen, Erika Barbero, Laura A. Katz
Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
The evolution of actin gene families is characterized by independent expansions and contractions across the eukaryotic tree of life. Here, we assess diversity of actin gene sequences within three lineages of the genus Arcella, a free-living testate (shelled) amoeba in the Arcellinida. We established four clonal lines of two morphospecies, Arcella hemisphaerica and A. vulgaris, and assessed their phylogenetic relationship within the "Amoebozoa" using small subunit ribosomal DNA (SSU-rDNA) genealogy. We determined that the two lines of A. hemisphaerica are identical in SSU-rDNA, while the two A. vulgaris are independent genetic lineages. Furthermore, we characterized multiple actin gene copies from …
Questioning The Frequency And Wisdom Of Compulsory Licensing For Pharmaceutical Patents, Richard A. Epstein, F. Scott Kieff
Questioning The Frequency And Wisdom Of Compulsory Licensing For Pharmaceutical Patents, Richard A. Epstein, F. Scott Kieff
University of Chicago Law Review
Many advocates for using compulsory licensing (CL) for pharmaceutical patents in developing countries like Thailand rest their case in part on the purported use of CL in the United States. In this Article we take issue with that proposition on several grounds. As a textual mattery the "commercially reasonable terms" language in Article 31 of TRIPS, even when qualified by the Doha declaration, prevents any host nation from using whatever royalties it wants in its CL arrangements, especially those that are below marginal cost. As a theoretical matter, we argue that the basic presumption in favor of voluntary licenses for …

The purpose of the study is to consider the perspective of emergency management professionals regarding need for a radiological response plan and its implications to school resiliency. This study utilizes a three-round, Modified Delphi Method to provide structure for the group process, elicit experts’ opinions, and build consensus regarding radiological response and school resiliency. The experts’ opinions are analyzed at the conclusion of each round and synthesized to create considerations for school systems for a school-system-based radiological-specific response plan. The recommendations align existing school system’s capabilities, roles and responsibilities with required emergency response actions necessary to protect the health and …
Prescription For Fairness: New Approach To Tort Liability Of Brand-Name And Generic Drug Manufacturers, Allen K. Rostron
Prescription For Fairness: New Approach To Tort Liability Of Brand-Name And Generic Drug Manufacturers, Allen K. Rostron
Faculty Works
Over the past two decades, courts have consistently ruled that the manufacturer of a brand-name prescription drug cannot be liable for injuries suffered by those taking generic imitations of its product. This meant that a patient injured by a generic drug could have no remedy at all because in many instances the generic drug manufacturer would escape liability on the ground that it did not produce any information on which the patient’s doctor relied. It was a perplexing dilemma. The generic drug manufacturer made the product that the plaintiff received, the brand-name manufacturer produced all of the information the patient’s …

UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice
This Report follows the experience of the Badi Foundation, a nonprofit organization operating in rural China, in its efforts to release women's potential to effect change in their communities. Numerous international conferences and treaties have recognized that female decision making is essential to achieve global environmental change and sustainable development. Recent scholarship recognizes that women are oftoverlooked sources for knowledge, skills, and leadership. Project-based efforts to empower and encourage women to participate in problem solving and other decision making in their communities have produced positive results. Through the Badi Foundation's Environmental Action Program (EAP), rural women gain the skills they …
Choosing Your Child's Race, Dov Fox
Choosing Your Child's Race, Dov Fox
UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice
Assisted reproduction has answered many couples' hopes of conceiving a child. In assisted reproduction, the appearance of racial salience matters, and adjusting the prominence of race in decision making frameworks can shape social meaning. There is a spectrum of salience-varying approaches that sperm banks could adopt to manage information about donor race, each of which sends a different message about the social meaning of donor catalog and website design. This Article considers four such approaches: race-indifferent, race-sensitive, race-attentive, and raceexclusive. Although civil rights scholarship reveals that race-based classification is not a necessary condition of wrongful discrimination, we should remain diligent …
The Linear Quadratic Tracker On Time Scales, Martin Bohner, Nick Wintz
The Linear Quadratic Tracker On Time Scales, Martin Bohner, Nick Wintz
Faculty Scholarship
In this work, we study a natural extension of the Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) on time scales. Here, we unify and extend the Linear Quadratic Tracker (LQT). We seek to find an affine optimal control that minimizes a cost functional associated with a completely observable linear system. We then find an affine optimal control for the fixed final state case in terms of the current state. Finally we include an example in disturbance/rejection modelling. A numerical example is also included.
Ojibwe And Canis Lupus : Cultural, Historical, And Political Influences On Contemporary Wolf Management In The Great Lakes Region, Caitlin Williamson
Ojibwe And Canis Lupus : Cultural, Historical, And Political Influences On Contemporary Wolf Management In The Great Lakes Region, Caitlin Williamson
Lawrence University Honors Projects
My thesis examines the relationship between the Ojibwe and the gray wolf (Canis lupus) by examining the historical, cultural, and political contexts that have shaped how Ojibwe currently view the wolf. I compare this relationship with the contemporary management of the wolf by federal and state governments. I conclude that the relationship between the Ojibwe and the wolf is complex, and draws on the cultural significance of the wolf to the Ojibwe, yet is also impacted by other driving factors. The Ojibwe management of the wolf contrasts with state management, and thus, Ojibwe have the opportunity to provide differing management …
Food Habits Of Harbor Seals (Phoca Vitulina Richardii) In San Francisco Bay, California, Corinne Michele Gibble
Food Habits Of Harbor Seals (Phoca Vitulina Richardii) In San Francisco Bay, California, Corinne Michele Gibble
Master's Theses
The diet of harbor seals (Phoca vitulina richardii) in San Francisco Bay (SFB) in California was examined from July 2007 to July 2008 via scat analysis. Scats were collected from five major haul-out sites; 22 species of fish and one species of crustacean were identified from 422 scats. The reliance of a non-native invasive species, Yellowfin Goby (Acanthogobius flavimanus), increased in importance in the diet. Additionally, another non-native invasive fish species, Chameleon Goby (Tridentiger trigonocephalus), was found for the first time in the diet of harbor seals in SFB. Harbor seal diet was compared between seasons, locations, and years using …
