Effect Of Benzylaminopurine (Bap) Pulsing On In Vitro Shoot Multiplication Of Musa Acuminata (Banana) Cv. Berangan, N. Jafari, R.Y. Othman, Norzulaani Khalid

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

MS (Murashige and Skoog) media supplemented with benzylaminopurine (BAP) showed that the number of bud formation in shoot cultures of Musa acuminata cv.Berangan during the initiation stage increased proportionately with the concentrations used (11, 22 and 33 μM). However, the highest concentration of BAP (33 μM) simultaneously increased the formation of abnormal shoots. After the first apical bud appeared, explants were transferred to MS medium with lower concentrations of BAP either with or without indole acetic acid (IAA). Proliferation media supplemented with IAA showed enhanced shoot multiplication and elongation but did not help to reduce the abnormality index that occurred

Mucuna Pruriens Linn. Seed Extract Pretreatment Protects Against Cardiorespiratory And Neuromuscular Depressant Effects Of Naja Sputatrix (Javan Spitting Cobra) Venom In Rats, S.Y. Fung, N.H. Tan, S.M. Sim, E. Marinello, R. Guerranti

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

Mucuna pruriens has been used by native Nigerians as a prophylactic for snakebite. The protective effects of M. pruriens seed extract (MPE) were investigated against the pharmacological actions of N. sputatrix (Javan spitting cobra) venom in rats. The results showed that MPE-pretreatment protected against cardiorespiratory and, to a lesser extent, neuromuscular depressant effects of N. sputatrix venom. These may be explained at least in part by the neutralisation of the cobra venom toxins by anti-MPE antibodies elicited by the MPE pretreatment.

The Application Of Melatonin And Platelet-Rich Plasma In The Development Of A Bioactive Calcium Aluminate Bone Regenerative Scaffold, William Clafshenkel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Over 500,000 bone graft procedures are conducted annually within the United States. Autografts contribute to donor site complications and disease transmission with allografts has been described. Many ceramics are only osteoconductive and are brittle, limiting their clinical use. Thus, the objective of this study was to create a bone substitute with osteoinductive properties similar to natural bone using the ceramic biomaterial calcium aluminate (CA). Calcium aluminate materials are durable and remain moldable for an extended period of time at room temperature. Further, the surfaces of CA scaffolds can be modified with biological agents through simple chemical means to locally deliver …

A Phenomenology Of Occupation-Based Hand Therapy, Donna Colaianni Jan 2011

A Phenomenology Of Occupation-Based Hand Therapy, Donna Colaianni

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The founding philosophies of occupational therapy and the medical model have been in conflict within the practice of occupational therapy for more than 60 years. This conflict is especially evident in the hand therapy arena due to the prevalence of the medical model. There is extensive literature outside this specialty area indicating that an occupation-based approach is beneficial for patients with whom it is used yet there is a lack of research on occupation-based hand therapy. Clearly describing and defining what constitutes occupation-based hand therapy can help promote occupation-based practice in keeping with the philosophy of the profession and facilitate …

The Domestic Church And The Post-Nuclear Family: A Theological Analysis And Critique, Corey Harris Jan 2011

The Domestic Church And The Post-Nuclear Family: A Theological Analysis And Critique, Corey Harris

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation is an attempt to reconcile the Roman Catholic theological understanding that the Christian family is a domestic church (ecclesia domestica) with a realistic demographic and sociological portrait of the American family while remaining faithful to Catholic moral teaching. The first chapter analyzes several works of the Magisterium from the time of Vatican II that have specifically referenced the domestic church. These documents collectively show that the domestic church is a sacramental and ecclesial reality although the theology is commonly espoused under the subheading of marriage and referencing a specifically nuclear form of family. The following chapter analyzes the …

Roles Of Carboxyl Groups In The Transmembrane Insertion Of Peptides, Francisco N. Barrera, Dhammika Weerakkody, Michael Anderson, Oleg A. Andreev, Yana K. Reshetnyak, Donald M. Engelman Jan 2011

Roles Of Carboxyl Groups In The Transmembrane Insertion Of Peptides, Francisco N. Barrera, Dhammika Weerakkody, Michael Anderson, Oleg A. Andreev, Yana K. Reshetnyak, Donald M. Engelman

Physics Faculty Publications

We have used pHLIP® [pH (low) insertion peptide] to study the roles of carboxyl groups in transmembrane (TM) peptide insertion. pHLIP binds to the surface of a lipid bilayer as a disordered peptide at neutral pH; when the pH is lowered, it inserts across the membrane to form a TM helix. Peptide insertion is reversed when the pH is raised above the characteristic pKa (6.0). A key event that facilitates membrane insertion is the protonation of aspartic acid (Asp) and/or glutamic acid (Glu) residues, since their negatively charged side chains hinder membrane insertion at …

Tuning A Polar Molecule For Selective Cytoplasmic Delivery By A Ph (Low) Insertion Peptide, Dayanjali Wijesinghe, Donald M. Engelman, Oleg A. Andreev, Yana K. Reshetnyak Jan 2011

Tuning A Polar Molecule For Selective Cytoplasmic Delivery By A Ph (Low) Insertion Peptide, Dayanjali Wijesinghe, Donald M. Engelman, Oleg A. Andreev, Yana K. Reshetnyak

Physics Faculty Publications

Drug molecules are typically hydrophobic and small in order to traverse membranes to reach cytoplasmic targets, but we have discovered that more polar molecules can be delivered across membranes using water-soluble, moderately hydrophobic membrane peptides of the pHLIP (pH low insertion peptide) family. Delivery of polar cargo molecules could expand the chemical landscape for pharmacological agents that have useful activity but are too polar by normal drug criteria. The spontaneous insertion and folding of the pHLIP peptide across a lipid bilayer seeks a free energy minimum, and insertion is accompanied by a release of energy that can be used to …

Measuring Tumor Aggressiveness And Targeting Metastatic Lesions With Fluorescent Phlip, Yana K. Reshetnyak, Lan Yao, Sida Zheng, Sergey Kuznetsov, Donald M. Engelman, Oleg A. Andreev

Physics Faculty Publications

Purpose: Malignant cancer foci develop acidic extracellular environments. Mild acidic conditions trigger insertion and folding of the pH (low) insertion peptide (pHLIPTM) across a cellular membrane, enabling targeting of such lesions.

Procedures: We employed optical imaging to follow targeting by fluorescent pHLIP given i.v. in mice. For visualization, Cy5.5 and Alexa750 were covalently attached to the N terminus of pHLIP, which stays outside of a cell membrane after transmembrane insertion.

Results: We demonstrate that pHLIP targets: (a) tumors of different origins established by subcutaneous injection of cancer cells, (b) spontaneous prostate tumors in TRAMP mice and (c) metastatic …

ANNs are inspired by human biological neurons and have been used to model some specific problems in many areas of engineering and science to achieve reasonable results. ANNs have the ability to learn from examples and then adapt to changing situations when sufficient input-output data are available. This paper presents …

Massive Modularity, Content Integration, And Language, Collin Rice Jan 2011

Massive Modularity, Content Integration, And Language, Collin Rice

Philosophy Faculty Research and Scholarship

One of the obstacles facing massive modularity is how a pervasively modular mind might generate non-domain-specific thoughts by integrating the content produced by various domain-specific modules. Peter Carruthers has recently argued that the operations of the language faculty are constitutive of the process by which the human mind is able to integrate content from heterogeneous conceptual domains. In this article, I first argue that Carruthers’s data do not provide support for either of two possible interpretations of his thesis. In addition, I provide empirical and theoretical reasons for thinking content integration is performed external to the language faculty.

Can Happiness Change? An Interdisciplinary, Multi-Method Investigation Of The Dynamics Of Happiness, Franziska Deutsch, Mandy Boehnke, Ulrich Kühnen, Klaus Boehnke

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

None of the major basic questions social sciences are concerned with can satisfyingly be answered from the perspective of one discipline alone. Each of them proposes theories and perspectives that make unique and important contributions. At the same time theoretical perspectives in general inevitably do have their blind spots. This fundamental insight was the reason for us to choose as the motto for the 19th IACCP congress held in Bremen in 2008 “Crossing borders – (Cross-) Cultural Psychology as an Interdisciplinary, Multi-Method Endeavor”. In this chapter we first want to illustrate this motto and our reasons for choosing it by …
