A Virtual Phytosaur Endocast And Its Implications For Sensory System Evolution In Archosaurs, Waymon Holloway
A Virtual Phytosaur Endocast And Its Implications For Sensory System Evolution In Archosaurs, Waymon Holloway
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Due to the overall morphological similarities between the Triassic archosaurs of the order Phytosauria and extant crocodilians, most studies have assumed that the two shared similar lifestyles. Many studies involving phytosaurs have focused on the external cranial morphology of various taxa. Internal cranial anatomy has received relatively little attention. As a result, comparative morphology studies of the braincases interior, or endocast, of phytosaurs are an area of potential exploration. Just as modern medical Xray computed tomography (CT) can be used to create three-dimensional images of internal structures of living subjects, such technology offers a non-invasive means of studying the internal …

A K–Parameter Analysis Of Hardy–Weinberg Equilibrium Conditions For The Mangrove Species In Two Islets Of Eastern Visayas, Philippines, Roberto N. Padua, Jay P. Picardal, Dexter S. Ontoy, Sherleine B. Tecson
Tecson
CNU Journal of Higher Education
The Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium model was used as a platform for analyzing a field survey data on the distribution of mangrove species in two islets of Eastern Visayas, Tabuk and Cabgan. The study is part of a larger Island Biodiversity program of the Cebu Normal University. A new estimator, developed by the first author, for measuring deviations from equilibrium was used in the study, while the relationship between the classical Shannon’s diversity index and the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium was likewise explored. Results revealed that the probability of extinction of the mangrove species in both islands are relatively high and the most probable …

Determination Of Optimal Sizes Of Marine Protected Areas In The Visayas, Philippines Through Biological-Social Welfare Optimization, Roberto N. Padua, Dexter S. Ontoy
CNU Journal of Higher Education
Two optimizations models are explored: one that maximizes a social welfare-funtion subject to biological diversity and management constraints, another which maximizes biodiversity subject to management resource constraints and social welfare considerations are proposed to determine the optimal sizes of Marine Protected Areas (MPA). The models are applied to the marine protected areas in the Visayas, Philippines using available records in the Directory of Marine Protected Areas in the Visayas by fitting the species-area relation (SAR) curve, the management resource–area curve (MRA), and the welfare–area (WA) curve from each of the marine protected areas listed. A comparison of the optimal MPA …
Some Applications Of The Distribution Of The Maximum On Independent Normal Random Variables, Roberto N. Padua
Some Applications Of The Distribution Of The Maximum On Independent Normal Random Variables, Roberto N. Padua
CNU Journal of Higher Education
The paper deals with the distribution of the maximum of n independent normal random variables and some of its applications in the electricity power industry in the area of peak load estimation and in genetic selection for animal breeding. For small n, the difficulty in finding the value of multiple integrals involved in the distribution function of the maximum order statistics (and hence, in the computation of its expected value) is recognized. The paper provides for simple approximations to the mean of the largest order statistics both in the iid and non-identically distributed cases. Large sample asymptotic results for extreme …

Loss Of Playa Wetlands Caused By Reclassification And Remapping Of Hydric Soils On The Southern High Plains, Lacrecia A. Johnson, David A. Haukos, Loren M. Smith, Scott T. Mcmurry
United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
Historically, playas in the Southern High Plains (SHP) were identified by the presence of hydric soils. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has begun a reclassification and remapping of upland and depressional soils for the playa region of Texas. For eight counties in Texas, we compared the occurrence of playas, as indicated by soils designated as hydric in original soil surveys, to designations in remapped soil surveys. We estimate a 65% decrease in playa numbers and 50% decrease in area as defined by the presence of hydric soil. Anthropogenic impacts, resulting in an altered hydrology and masking of hydric …

The Standards for Reporting of Diagnostic Accuracy (STARD) statement was developed to encourage complete and transparent reporting of key elements of test accuracy studies in human medicine. The statement was motivated by widespread evidence of bias in test accuracy studies and the finding that incomplete or absent reporting of items in the STARD checklist was associated with overly optimistic estimates of test performance characteristics. Although STARD principles apply broadly, specific guidelines do not exist to account for unique considerations in livestock studies such as herd tests, potential use of experimental challenge studies, a more diverse group of testing purposes and …

In 2009, Mycobacterium bovis infection was detected in a herd of 60 elk (Cervus elaphus) and 50 fallow deer (Dama dama) in Nebraska, USA. Upon depopulation of the herd, the prevalence of bovine tuberculosis (TB) was estimated at ∼71–75%, based upon histopathology and culture results. Particularly with elk, gross lesions were often severe and extensive. One year ago, the majority of the elk had been tested for TB by single cervical test (SCT), and all were negative. After initial detection of a tuberculous elk in this herd, 42 of the 59 elk were tested by SCT. …

Equine Piroplasmosis Domestic Pathways Assessment (2011), Usda, Aphis, Vs, Ceah, Ncra, Julie Gauthier, Robert Harris, Angela James, Laurel Voelker, Katie Portacci
Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease: Publications
Abstract: Equine piroplasmosis (EP) is a tick borne disease of equids. It is considered a foreign animal disease in the United States. However, from January 2009 through November 2010, 542 confirmed positive cases have been identified in 16 different States. This domestic pathways assessment evaluates the risk of releasing an EP pathogen (Theileria equi or Babesia caballi) from a quarantined premises through movement of horses. In addition, this assessment evaluates the risk of disease transmission by ticks, vertical transmission, or iatrogenic transmission. When an acaricide is applied correctly, the risk of EP transmission by ticks to a horse is low. …

Er Stress And Lipid Metabolism In Adipocytes, Beth S. Zha, Huiping Zhou
Er Stress And Lipid Metabolism In Adipocytes, Beth S. Zha, Huiping Zhou
Microbiology and Immunology Publications
The role of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress is a rapidly emerging field of interest in the pathogenesis of metabolic diseases. Recent studies have shown that chronic activation of ER stress is closely linked to dysregulation of lipid metabolism in several metabolically important cells including hepatocytes, macrophages, β-cells, and adipocytes. Adipocytes are one of the major cell types involved in the pathogenesis of the metabolic syndrome. Recent advances in dissecting the cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in the regulation of adipogenesis and lipid metabolism indicate that activation of ER stress plays a central role in regulating adipocyte function. In this paper, …
Outlier-Resistant L1 Orthogonal Regression Via The Reformulation-Linearization Technique, J. Paul Brooks, Edward L. Boone
Outlier-Resistant L1 Orthogonal Regression Via The Reformulation-Linearization Technique, J. Paul Brooks, Edward L. Boone
Statistical Sciences and Operations Research Publications
Assessing the linear relationship between a set of continuous predictors and a continuous response is a well-studied problem in statistics and data mining. L2-based methods such as ordinary least squares and orthogonal regression can be used to determine this relationship. However, both of these methods become impaired when influential values are present. This problem becomes compounded when outliers confound standard diagnostics. This work proposes an L1-norm orthogonal regression method (L1OR) formulated as a nonconvex optimization problem. Solution strategies for finding globally optimal solutions are presented. Simulation studies are conducted to assess the resistance of the method to outliers and the …

Physics Publications
Tunable and abrupt thermal quenching of photoluminescence by increasing temperature has been observed for the blue band in high-resistivity Zn-doped GaN. The photoluminescence intensity dropped by several orders of magnitude within a few Kelvins, and the temperature at which that drop occurred could be tuned by changing the incident light intensity. Modeling the system with rate equations for competing electron-hole recombination flows through three defect species, one of which is a nonradiative deep donor, gives results consistent with these observations.

Intravaginal Cytomegalovirus (Cmv) Challenge Elicits Maternal Viremia And Results In Congenital Transmission In A Guinea Pig Model, Megan J. Olejniczak, K Yeon Choi, Michael Mcvoy, Xiaohong Cui, Mark R. Schleiss
Pediatrics Publications
Background The objective of this study was to compare intravaginal (ivg) and subcutaneous (sc) administration of the guinea pig cytomegalovirus (GPCMV) in pregnant and non-pregnant guinea pigs. These studies tested the hypotheses that ivg infection would elicit immune responses, produce maternal viremia, and lead to vertical transmission, with an efficiency similar to the traditionally employed sc route.
Results Four groups of age- and size-matched guinea pigs were studied. Two groups were pregnant, and two groups were not pregnant. Animals received 5x105 plaque-forming units (PFU) of a GPCMV reconstituted from an infectious bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) construct containing the full-length GPCMV …

The Protein Interaction Map Of Bacteriophage Lambda, Seesandra V. Rajagopala, Sherwood Casjens, Peter Uetz
Study of Biological Complexity Publications
Background
Bacteriophage lambda is a model phage for most other dsDNA phages and has been studied for over 60 years. Although it is probably the best-characterized phage there are still about 20 poorly understood open reading frames in its 48-kb genome. For a complete understanding we need to know all interactions among its proteins. We have manually curated the lambda literature and compiled a total of 33 interactions that have been found among lambda proteins. We set out to find out how many protein-protein interactions remain to be found in this phage.
Results
In order to map lambda's interactions, we …
Organizational Management Of Conflicting Professional Identities, Cassandra Burke Robertson
Organizational Management Of Conflicting Professional Identities, Cassandra Burke Robertson

Professionals in the military have suffered criticism for their failure to counter military excess in the so-called "War on Terror" - especially in the area of torture and maltreatment of detainees. Much of the criticism leveled against such professionals has assumed that they were bad actors who were making a conscious choice to avoid the strictures of their code of ethics. This Article counters that narrative by applying identity theory to offer a more situations explanation. It argues that some of these professional failures arise from the cognitive incentives faced by individuals in an organization that rewards organizational deference over …

Enhanced Expense Practices For Higher Education: Enduring Continuous Reductions In State Appropriation, Ralph E. Mckinney, Lawrence Shao
Enhanced Expense Practices For Higher Education: Enduring Continuous Reductions In State Appropriation, Ralph E. Mckinney, Lawrence Shao
Management Faculty Research
The way forward for higher education to survive and to endure reductions in state appropriations is the enrichment of practices associated with traditional expenses. Because consistent reductions in state appropriations threaten to cause major changes to educational services within Higher Education, this paper advocates enhancement to program management and changes to teaching practices without sacrificing students' expectations. In fact, these practices strengthen learning through practical and team teaching environments while promoting unity of colleges and integration of courses. Module learning and transition programs encourage students to complete degrees faster and step up to the next advance degree. Flexibility can be …

Marine Ecosystem Protection Trade-Off Economic Model With Terrestrial Ecosystem Exploitation In Fishing Communities Near Marine Protected Areas, Roberto N. Padua, Ferdinand T. Abocejo, Joy M. Mirasol
CNU Journal of Higher Education
The total ban on fishing in marine protected areas demands entailed that fisherman in nearby fishing communities look for an alternative means of livelihood. Often, such alternative livelihoods exploit the remaining terrestrial ecosystem found within or near these fishing communities. This paper introduced a trade-off economic model for marine protection-terrestrial exploitation through a Marine Protection Terrestrial Exploitation Curve (MPTEC). The peculiar characteristics of the fishing communities near marine protected areas (MPAs) are inputted to the trade-off model. Simulation results revealed that for the optimistic case (communities which are better educated and with small household sizes), the terrestrial ecosystems’ damage rate …
