Social Equity In The New 21st America: A Case For Transgender Competence Within Public Affairs Graduate Programs, Richard Greggory Johnson Jan 2011

Social Equity In The New 21st America: A Case For Transgender Competence Within Public Affairs Graduate Programs, Richard Greggory Johnson

Public and Nonprofit Administration

This paper focuses on the importance of transgender education in public affairs programs, particularly as its students prepare to enter an increasingly diverse workforce in the 21st century. The paper first connects transgender awareness and education to the social equity literature. To date, attention within the social equity literature has primarily focused on race/ethnicity and, to a lesser extent, on women. However, issues of gender identity and sexual orientation have largely been missing from the social equity dialogue. This paper aims to fill the void. Next, the paper examines the transgender movement as a means to eliminate transgender oppression from …

Implications Of Community Concordance For Assessing Stream Integrity At Three Nested Spatial Scales In Minnesota, U.S.A., Christine L. Dolph, David D. Huff, Christopher J. Chizinski, Bruce Vondracek Jan 2011

Implications Of Community Concordance For Assessing Stream Integrity At Three Nested Spatial Scales In Minnesota, U.S.A., Christine L. Dolph, David D. Huff, Christopher J. Chizinski, Bruce Vondracek

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

1. Fish and invertebrate assemblage data collected from 670 stream sites in Minnesota (U.S.A.) were used to calculate concordance across three nested spatial scales (statewide, ecoregion and catchment). Predictive taxa richness models, calibrated using the same data, were used to evaluate whether concordant communities exhibited similar trends in human-induced taxa loss across all three scales. Finally, we evaluated the strength of the relationship between selected environmental variables and the composition of both assemblages at all three spatial scales.

2. Significant concordance between fish and invertebrate communities occurred at the statewide scale as well as in six of seven ecoregions and …

Advertisement Call And Distribution Of The Treefrogs Hyla Chrysoscelis And Hyla Versicolor In Virginia, Joseph C. Mitchell, Christopher A. Pague

Virginia Journal of Science

The gray treefrog complex consists of two sibling species that are indistinguishable morphologically, the diploid Hyla chrysoscelis and the tetraploid Hyla versicolor. Identification is possible in the field only by audio recognition of male advertisement call trill rates (pulses/second). During 1979-1983 we evaluated taped calls of these two species taken from 89 populations from throughout Virginia to map their respective ranges and to evaluate differences in call parameters. Hyla chrysoscelis occurs in the Coastal Plain, eastern and southern Piedmont, and in southwestern Virginia. Hyla versicoloroccurs in the Piedmont, Blue Ridge, and Ridge and Valley regions south to Wythe …

Changes In Habitat Heterogeneity Alter Marine Sessile Benthic Communities, Pablo Munguia, Richard W. Osman, John Hamilton, Robert B. Whitlatch, Roman Zajac Jan 2011

Changes In Habitat Heterogeneity Alter Marine Sessile Benthic Communities, Pablo Munguia, Richard W. Osman, John Hamilton, Robert B. Whitlatch, Roman Zajac

Biology and Environmental Science Faculty Publications

Habitat heterogeneity is considered an important mechanism influencing diversity patterns in spatially structured habitats. However, spatial heterogeneity is not static and it can change along temporal scales. These changes, whether gradual or rapid, have the potential of forcing species extinctions or facilitating the introduction of nonnative species. Here, we present modeling results that show how changes in spatial heterogeneity over several generations can produce strong changes in benthic species composition residing in eastern Long Island Sound, USA. For many benthic species, hard substrate is a limiting resource which can vary in availability among different coastal areas. We modeled gradual changes …

Computational Models Of Chemical Systems Inspired By Braess’ Paradox, Dante Lepore, Carl Barratt, Pauline Schwartz Jan 2011

Computational Models Of Chemical Systems Inspired By Braess’ Paradox, Dante Lepore, Carl Barratt, Pauline Schwartz

Chemistry and Chemical Engineering Faculty Publications

Systems chemistry is a new discipline which investigates the interactions within a network of chemical reactions. We have studied several computational models of chemical systems inspired by mathematical paradoxes and have found that even simple systems may behave in a counterintuitive, non-linear manner depending upon various conditions. In the present study, we modeled a set of reactions inspired by one such paradox, Braess’ paradox, an interesting phenomenon whereby the introduction of additional capacity (e.g. pathways) in some simple network systems can lead to an unexpected reduction in the overall flow rate of “traffic” through the system. We devised several chemical …

Nitric Oxide-Generating Silicone As A Blood-Contacting Biomaterial, Kagya Amoako Jan 2011

Nitric Oxide-Generating Silicone As A Blood-Contacting Biomaterial, Kagya Amoako

Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Faculty Publications

Coagulation upon blood-contacting biomaterials remains a problem for short and long-term clinical applications. This study examined the ability of copper(II)-doped silicone surfaces to generate nitric oxide (NO) and locally inhibit coagulation. Silicone was doped with 3-micron copper (Cu(0)) particles yielding 3 to 10 weight percent (wt%) Cu in 70-μm thick Cu/Silicone polymeric matrix composites (Cu/Si PMCs). At 3, 5, 8 and 10 wt% Cu doping, the surface expression of Cu was 12.1 ± 2.8%, 19.7 ± 5.4%, 29.0 ± 3.8%, and 33.8 ± 6.5% respectively. After oxidizing Cu(0) to Cu(II) by spontaneous corrosion, NO flux, JNO (mol*cm−2*min−1), as measured by …

Biosorption Parameter Estimation With Genetic Algorithm, Khim Hoong Chu, Xiao Feng, Eui Yong Kim, Yung Tse Hung Jan 2011

Biosorption Parameter Estimation With Genetic Algorithm, Khim Hoong Chu, Xiao Feng, Eui Yong Kim, Yung Tse Hung

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

In biosorption research, a fairly broad range of mathematical models are used to correlate discrete data points obtained from batch equilibrium, batch kinetic or fixed bed breakthrough experiments. Most of these models are inherently nonlinear in their parameters. Some of the models have enjoyed widespread use, largely because they can be linearized to allow the estimation of parameters by least-squares linear regression. Selecting a model for data correlation appears to be dictated by the ease with which it can be linearized and not by other more important criteria such as parameter accuracy or theoretical relevance. As a result, models that …

Inconsistency Should Not Be Materiality: The Flaws In 37 C.F.R. § 1.56(B)(2), 10 J. Marshall Rev. Intell. Prop. L. 491 (2011), Lawrence Pope

UIC Review of Intellectual Property Law

The doctrine of inequitable conduct is in need of clarification. The Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit has recently granted en banc review in Therasense, Inc. v. Becton, Dickinson, & Co. to determine the appropriate standards for each prong of inequitable conduct doctrine: materiality and intent. While the parties and the amici have almost unanimously proposed that the standard of materiality should be less inclusive than “what a reasonable examiner would want to know in deciding upon patentability,” there is much debate regarding how the standard for materiality should be articulated. One proposal is that the courts should look …

Effects Of Monetary Incentives On Academic Performance Of Fourth-Grade Students From Low Socioeconomic Status, Sandra O. Dafiaghor

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Scientific investigations of monetary incentives on students' academic achievement have not explored effects on performance of students from low socioeconomic status (SES), nor has there been exploration of teachers' perceptions of how monetary incentives impact academic performance of students from low socioeconomic status. The present study explored how low SES students perceive their academic performances being impacted by extrinsic monetary incentives. The study also explored the fourth-grade teachers' beliefs about the impact of monetary incentive on students' academic performance. The study found that students believe monetary incentives will increase academic performance, depending on the size of the cash incentive. The …

Though The Darkness Hide Thee: A Study Of Depression And Christian Spirituality, Katheryn Klukow Jan 2011

Though The Darkness Hide Thee: A Study Of Depression And Christian Spirituality, Katheryn Klukow

Modern Psychological Studies

The study of depression and its effect on Christian spirituality is sparse at best. This study seeks to integrate the disciplines of psychology and theology in order to better understand the effect depression has upon spirituality. A survey of literature, both recent and historic, sheds light on the hypothesis that depression causes spiritual distress. Particular emphasis is given to the writings of the Puritans, who were prolific on the subject. Original qualitative research involving the interviews of depressed subjects is presented. Implications for clinical treatment and suggestions for further research are put forth.

Social Gerontology- Integrative And Territorial Aspects: A Citation Analysis Of Subject Scatter And Database Coverage, Elaine M. Lasda Bergman Jan 2011

Social Gerontology- Integrative And Territorial Aspects: A Citation Analysis Of Subject Scatter And Database Coverage, Elaine M. Lasda Bergman

University Libraries Faculty Scholarship

To determine the mix of resources used in social gerontology research, a citation analysis was conducted. A representative sample of citations was selected from three prominent gerontology journals and information was added to determine subject scatter and database coverage for the cited materials. Results indicate that a significant portion of gerontology research, even from a social science perspective, relies roughly equally on medical resources as it does social science resources. Furthermore, there is a small but defined core of literature constituting scholarly “territory” unique to gerontology. Analysis of database indexing indicated that broad, interdisciplinary databases provide more comprehensive coverage of …

A Comparative Analysis Of Genocidal Rape In Rwanda And The Former Yugoslavia: Implications For The Future, Jessica Kruger Jan 2011

A Comparative Analysis Of Genocidal Rape In Rwanda And The Former Yugoslavia: Implications For The Future, Jessica Kruger

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

This work examines the genocidal rape policies that occurred in the Rwandan and former Yugoslavian conflicts. Traditionally, rape has been considered an unfortunate yet inescapable consequence of war. In the early 1990s, the Hutu and Serbian regimes developed a new tactic and utilized rape as a genocidal weapon. Following a comparative analysis framework, the present study will examine the similarities and differences of the genocidal rape in Rwanda and the former Yugoslavia. Five points of comparison were established: perpetrators, victims, global economics, social disorder, and militias. Results of this analysis show that Rwanda and the former Yugoslavia possessed common pre-genocidal …

The Socialization Of African American Women As Faculty Members In Religiously-Affiliated Universities, Sheryl L. Mcgriff Jan 2011

The Socialization Of African American Women As Faculty Members In Religiously-Affiliated Universities, Sheryl L. Mcgriff

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Research on experiences of faculty-of-color generally, and on African American women particularly, in religiously-affiliated universities is embryonic. Studying faith-based colleges as a synonymous group is a complex process because of different institutional types (e.g., 2-year, 4-year, and seminary); divergent missions; church affiliations (e.g., Lutheran, Baptist, and Roman Catholic) and Carnegie classifications (Smith & Jackson, 2004). This study’s purpose was to understand how African American women interpret and respond to their formal/informal socialization as faculty members in Jesuit universities. Jesuits have a distinct heritage that influences their institutional mission (Tierney, 1997). Perpetuation of religious tenets and ideals is a primary focus …

The Co-Emergence Of Cognition, Language, And Speech Motor Control In Early Development: A Longitudinal Correlation Study, Ignatius S. B. Nip, Jordan R. Green, David Marx Jan 2011

The Co-Emergence Of Cognition, Language, And Speech Motor Control In Early Development: A Longitudinal Correlation Study, Ignatius S. B. Nip, Jordan R. Green, David Marx

Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders: Faculty Publications

Although the development of spoken language is dependent on the emergence of cognitive, language, and speech motor skills, knowledge about how these domains interact during the early stages of communication development is currently limited. This exploratory investigation examines the strength of associations between longitudinal changes in articulatory kinematics and development of skills in multiple domains thought to support early communication development. Twenty-four children were investigated every 3 months between the ages of 9 and 21 months. Movements of the upper lip, lower lip, and jaw were transduced using a three-dimensional motion capture system to obtain age-related changes in movement speed …
