Profiles In Science For Science Librarians: "What Lives Where, And Why": Alfred Russel Wallace, And The Field Of Biogeography, Charles H. Smith Jan 2011

Profiles In Science For Science Librarians: "What Lives Where, And Why": Alfred Russel Wallace, And The Field Of Biogeography, Charles H. Smith

DLPS Faculty Publications

Biogeography, the study of animal and plant distribution, has a history extending back to at least the eighteenth century. But it was not until the work of Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace in the mid-nineteenth century that it really came into its own as a science. Darwin’s importance notwithstanding, it was really Wallace who put the field on the map, and many of today’s research threads can be traced back to his influence. This article provides a summary review of Wallace’s life and work and biogeography as a field of study, including Wallace’s role in its development.

Safety And Protective Efficacy Of Ina-Inactivated Venezuelan Equine Encephalitis Virus: Implication In Vaccine Development, Anuj Sharma, Paridhi Gupta, Pamela J. Glass, Michael D. Parker, Radha K. Maheshwari

United States Army: Publications

We have previously shown that a hydrophobic alkylating compound, 1,5-iodonaphthyl-azide (INA) can efficiently inactivate the virulent strain of Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus (VEEV), V3000 in vitro. In this study, we have evaluated the safety of INA-inactivated V3000 and V3526 and the protective efficacy of INA-inactivated V3000. INA-inactivated V3000 and V3526 did not cause disease in suckling mice. RNA isolated from the INA-inactivated V3000 and V3526 was also not infectious. Immunization of adult mice with INA-inactivated V3000 induced an anti-VEEV antibody response and protected mice from virulent VEEV challenge. The protective efficacy of INA-inactivated V3000 increased with the use of adjuvants. …

Bockheim, Mark Clark, Teresa Nettleton-Hollingsworth, M. Torre Jorgenson, Evan S. Kane, Michelle Mack, Jonathan O'Donnell, Chien-Lu Ping, Edward A.G. Schuur, Merritt R. Turetsky, David W. Valentine

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

The direction and magnitude of soil organic carbon (SOC) changes in response to climate change remain unclear and depend on the spatial distribution of SOC across landscapes. Uncertainties regarding the fate of SOC are greater in high-latitude systems where data are sparse and the soils are affected by sub-zero temperatures. To address these issues in Alaska, a first-order assessment of data gaps and spatial distributions of SOC was conducted from a recently compiled soil carbon database. Temperature and landform type were the dominant controls on SOC distribution for selected ecoregions. Mean SOC pools (to a depth of 1-m) varied by …

A New Look At Quantifying Tobacco Exposure During Pregnancy Using Fuzzy Clustering, Hua Fang, Craig Johnson, Christian Stopp, Kimberly Andrews Epsy Jan 2011

A New Look At Quantifying Tobacco Exposure During Pregnancy Using Fuzzy Clustering, Hua Fang, Craig Johnson, Christian Stopp, Kimberly Andrews Epsy

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Background—Prenatal tobacco exposure is a risk factor for the development of externalizing behaviors and is associated with several adverse health outcomes. Because pregnancy smoking is a complex behavior with both daily fluctuations and changes over the course of pregnancy, quantifying tobacco exposure is a significant challenge. To better measure the degree of tobacco exposure, costly biological specimens and repeated self-report measures of smoking typically are collected throughout pregnancy. With such designs, there are multiple, and substantially correlated, indices that can be integrated via new statistical methods to identify patterns of prenatal exposure.

Method—A multiple-imputation-based fuzzy clustering technique was designed …

Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

A series of synthetic aporphine derivatives structurally related to domesticine and nantenine (ring A, N6 and ring C truncated analogs), was evaluated in MTS cytotoxicity assays against the human colon cancer cell lines, HCT-116 and Caco-2. In general, the C1 position of ring A is tolerant of alkoxy substituents as well as a benzoyl ester functionality. Other modifications evaluated resulted in a decrease in cytotoxic activity. The most potent compounds identified had IC50 values in the range 23–38 μM, comparable to the known cytotoxic agent, etoposide.

Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

Despite the success of potent reverse transcriptase (RT) inhibitors against human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) in combination regimens, the development of drug resistant RTs constitutes a major hurdle for the long-term efficacy of current antiretroviral therapy. Nucleoside β-triphosphate analogs of adenosine and nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) (3′-azido-2′,3′-dideoxythymidine (AZT), 3′-fluoro-2′,3′-dideoxythymidine (FLT), and 2′,3′-didehydro-2′,3′-dideoxythymidine (d4T)) were synthesized and their inhibitory activities were evaluated against wild-type and multidrug resistant HIV-1 RTs. Adenosine β-triphosphate (1) and AZT β-triphosphate (2) completely inhibited the DNA polymerase activity of wild type, the NRTI multi resistant, and nonnucleoside RT inhibitors (NNRTI) resistant …

Blacklegged ticks (Ixodes scapularis) transmit the causative agent of Lyme disease in the Northeastern United States. Current research focuses on elucidating biochemical pathways that may be disrupted to prevent pathogen transmission, thereby preventing disease. Genome screening reported transcripts coding for two putative sulfotransferases in whole tick extracts of the nymphal and larval stages. Sulfotransferases are known to sulfonate phenolic and alcoholic receptor agonists such as 17β-estradiol, thereby inactivating the receptor ligands. We used bioinformatic approaches to predict substrates for Ixosc Sult 1 and Ixosc Sult 2 and tested the predictions with biochemical assays. Homology models of 3D protein …

Characterization And Three-Dimensional Organization Of Nuclei Within Developing Spermatogenic Cysts In Drosophila Pseudoobscura, Crystal Pristell, Angela V. Klaus

Biological Sciences Student Work

We have analyzed spermatogenic cyst morphology to accurately characterize
cyst maturation in our in vitro culture system. Phase contrast and fluorescence pictures were taken capturing all stages of cysts cell maturation. Through the course of the semester, a large collection of each stage has been created to create a standard method in further cyst cell analysis. Accurate characterization of cyst maturation in invitro spermatogenic culture will improve our ability to quantify cyst survival under different treatment conditions.

Accounting For Instream Lakes When Interpolating Stream Water Chemistry Observations Jan 2011

Accounting For Instream Lakes When Interpolating Stream Water Chemistry Observations

Journal of Spatial Hydrology

Direct monitoring of stream water chemistry is an increasingly important tool for securing stream water quality and assessing stream ecological functioning as it relates to overall ecosystem health. Such monitoring is often discontinuous in spatial extent and, thus, needs to be interpolated at unsampled locations if the desired end product is a continuous map of stream water chemistry. Recently there have been major advances in the use and development of geostatistical methods (such as kriging) for interpolating between observations of stream water chemistry within stream networks. This study investigated the influence of distance definition on interpolation of synoptically collected stream …

Spatial And Tidal Variations Of Physico-Chemical Parameters In The Lower Gangetic Delta Region, West Bengal, India Jan 2011

Spatial And Tidal Variations Of Physico-Chemical Parameters In The Lower Gangetic Delta Region, West Bengal, India

Journal of Spatial Hydrology

The lower stretch of Gangetic delta in the Indian sub-continent is noted for its rich mangrove biodiversity, natural calamities, and livelihood-supporting matrix of millions of people and is the only mangrove base of Royal Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris tigris) in the planet Earth. The present trend of industrialization, urbanization and construction of barrage in the upstream zone has changed the landscape of the deltaic complex and the characteristics of the aquatic sub-system have also changed accordingly. This ecosystem offers an ideal site to study a number of physico-chemical parameters in relation to changing scenario of the region. The presence of …

More Light? Biblical Criticism And Enlightenment Attitudes, Norman Vance Jan 2011

More Light? Biblical Criticism And Enlightenment Attitudes, Norman Vance

Religion in the Age of Enlightenment

Goethe's dying words-his request for Mehr Licht, more light in the darkened sickroom-were meant literally, but they were immediately given metaphorical significance. What did they signify? Did they imply Olympian confidence that more intellectual light would keep flooding in-or frustration and despair at the lack of it? A similar ambiguity is reflected in the history of biblical criticism, an archetypal Enlightenment enterprise that somehow failed to obey the rules and deliver as hoped and failed to obey the rules, despite all the dry light shed upon it. When Jurgen Habermas responded to the award of the Adorno Prize in …

"This Interesting Female Shone As The Morning Star": Protestant Missions, American Indian Schoolgirls, And The Rhetoric Of True Womanhood, Elizabeth J. Thompson Jan 2011

"This Interesting Female Shone As The Morning Star": Protestant Missions, American Indian Schoolgirls, And The Rhetoric Of True Womanhood, Elizabeth J. Thompson

Religion in the Age of Enlightenment

During the settlement era of the English colonies in North America, narratives that expressed hopefulness about the assimilation of Indians often did so through tropes of intermarriage. From William Byrd to Thomas Jefferson, writers fantasized that the most obvious, effective, and nonviolent solution to the ongoing Indian problem could have been-even should have been-intermarriage. Writers, however, seldom suggested their contemporary readers actually seize on this solution. Instead, the overwhelming majority cast such panaceas in the distant past, while a few imagined them taking place in the remote future. Almost all of them ignored actual intermarriage taking place between white men …

EFFECTS OF ERBB2 VACCINATION ON THE MURINE HEART. Sumayya Ahmad, Renelle Gee, Kerry Russell, and Mark J. Mamula. Section of Rheumatology, Department of Internal Medicine, Yale University School of Medicine, New Haven, CT 06510.

ErbB2, a member of the epidermal growth factor receptor family, is found in many tissues of the body. It is known to potentiate growth via vascularization and anti-apoptotic signals, amongst other things. Its presence on breast cancer cells results in a particularly poor prognosis. A novel monoclonal antibody targeting this receptor, Herceptin, allows precise targeting of these cells and results in longer life spans for these …

Platelet Induction Of Monocyte To Dendritic Cell Differentiation, Tyler Durazzo Jan 2011

Platelet Induction Of Monocyte To Dendritic Cell Differentiation, Tyler Durazzo

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

We hypothesized that activated platelets induce monocyte-to-dendritic cell (DC) differentiation. The aims of this study were to: (1) determine the role that platelets play, if any, in the signaling of monocyte to DC differentiation; (2) determine the mechanism of action by which platelets induce monocyte-to-DC differentiation. (3) Use this knowledge to advance cancer immunotherapy.

To achieve these ends: (1) parallel-plate flow chambers were designed to deliver monocytes a controlled level of platelet exposure, with phenotype and genotype assessed following overnight incubation; (2) blocking antibodies and proteins were used to assess for the significance of particular monocyte-platelet interactions in the mechanism; …
