Quantifying The Effects Of Nicotine And Nitroglycerin On The Microvasculature, Macdale Elwin
Quantifying The Effects Of Nicotine And Nitroglycerin On The Microvasculature, Macdale Elwin
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Abstract
Nicotine can stimulate both sympathetic and parasympathetic ganglionic cells depending on which ganglionic cells of the ANS it is able to access. This study involved the transdermal delivery of low doses of nicotine and nitroglycerin to the forehead and finger microvasculature so as to test the hypothesis that, although both drugs will cause vasodilation at the forehead, the nature of the dilation will differ as a consequence of their different sites of action within the neuro-microvascular pathways. With IRB approval, the local effects of transdermal nitroglycerin and nicotine were investigated on the forehead and finger of 10 healthy volunteers …
Collateral Damage: The History Of United States Case Law On Today's Military Hunger Strike Doctrine, Adrian Mora
Collateral Damage: The History Of United States Case Law On Today's Military Hunger Strike Doctrine, Adrian Mora
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
HYPOTHESIS/AIMS: In the Global War on Terror (GWOT), hunger strikes by detainees in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba have been managed by military physicians through force feedings. This thesis answers the question of how did the United States justify its current practice of force feeding prisoners against prevailing medical ethics? The author hypothesizes that U.S. case law history of approximately 1979 to 1997 enabled the current military doctrine to force feed international detainees in GWOT.
METHODS: A qualitative and comprehensive review of the relevant literature was undertaken. The sources used for conclusive analysis included press releases, ethics commentary, law reviews, medical association …

INVESTIGATING THE CONTRIBUTIONS OF LANGERHANS CELLS TO THE EPIDERMAL OXIDATIVE STRESS RESPONSE. Debra A. Smith, Julia Lewis, Renata Filler, Kseniya Golubets, Michael Girardi. Department of Dermatology, Yale University, School of Medicine, New Haven, CT.
Langerhans cells (LC) play an essential role in the development of skin cancer in a chemical carcinogenesis mouse model. To elucidate the mechanism of this effect, LC-deficient (Langerin-dipheria toxin A or human Langerin-diphtheria toxin receptor transgenic) mouse epidermis was compared to normal littermate controls (NLC) to assess whether levels of oxidative stress or DNA damage are affected by LC. Groups of mice were treated with either …

Is Aggressive Mediastinal Control Needed After Neoadjuvant Therapy For Distal Esophagus Carcinomas?, Chantae Sullivan
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
The pattern of recurrence after neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy followed by transhiatal esophagectomy with limited mediastinal lymphadenectomy among 73 patients with carcinoma of the distal esophagus, gastroesophageal junction (GEJ) and/or gastric cardia, was investigated in this retrospective study. Results indicate that among the 30 patients with recurrence, distant sites (n = 24) were more common than local sites (n = 6) and this difference was statistically significant (P = 0.001). Lungs and liver were the most common sites of first recurrence, 51%, while mediastinal nodes were the sites of first recurrence in 6% of cases. Twenty patients (27.4%) had pathologic complete response, …

Development Of A Fungal Based-Product For The Control Of Western Flower Thrips Frankliniella Occidentalis (Pergande), Niassy Saliou
All PhD Dissertations
The Western Flower Thrips (WFT) Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) is a major constraint to many cultivated crops in the world, causing important economical yield losses. They cause direct damage on plants and contribute exclusively in the propagation of tospovirus to plant. Thrips control is essentially based on the use of synthetic chemical pesticides; however most thrips species including Foccidentalis are resistant to a wide group of chemical pesticides. Hence there is the need to develop alternative strategies that are environmentally friendly. Entomopathogenic fungi are among the options being considered as a promising alternative for F. occidentalis management. The aim of this …

Environmental Factors Affecting Settlement Of Quagga Mussel (Dreissena Rostriformis Bugensis) Veligers In Lake Mead, Nevada-Arizona, Usa, Dong Chen, Shawn Gerstenberger, Sara Ann Mueting, Wai Hing Wong
Environmental & Global Health Faculty Research
Environmental factors that can affect the settlement rate of quagga mussel veligers include flow velocity, water temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), conductivity, total organic carbon (TOC), and the surface roughness of monitoring substrates. In the present study, six artificial substrates, Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) plastic, High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) plastic, Concrete Underlayment Board (CUB), aluminum, stainless steel and fiberglass, were used to monitor the settlement of quagga mussel veligers at different water depths in Lake Mead, Nevada-Arizona, USA. Considering the hierarchical data structure of observed mussel densities, we investigated the relationship between mussel settlement on monitoring substrates and the surrounding …

Dreissenid mussels including zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha Pallas, 1771), originating from the Ponto-Caspian area, and quagga mussel (Dreissena rostriformis bugensis Andrusov, 1897), originating from the mouths of the Rivers Southern Bug and Dnieper are both species native to Eastern Europe, which were accidently introduced into the Laurentian Great Lakes in North America in the 1980s in ballast water (Carlton 2008; Van der Velde et al 2010). Dreissenid mussels have created severe ecological, recreational and economic impacts on many systems because they are biofoulers and efficient ecological engineers that filter large quantities of water. Examples of these wide-ranging impacts are discussed …

Decomposing The Intergenerational Disparity In Income And Obesity, Qi Zhang, Buhong Zheng, Ning Zhang, Youfa Wang
Community & Environmental Health Faculty Publications
Intergenerational disparity in income and health violates the norm of equal opportunity and deserves the attention of researchers and policy makers. To understand changes in intergenerational disparity, we created the intergenerational mobility index (IMI), which can simultaneously measure changes in income rankings and in health outcomes across two generations. We selected obesity as one health outcome to illustrate the application of IMI due to its severe health and financial consequences for society and the significant changes in the distribution of obesity across income groups. Although obesity has increased in all income groups in the last four decades, higher income groups …

Pelagic seabirds are highly mobile, reducing the likelihood of allopatric speciation where disruption of gene flow between populations is caused by physically insurmountable, extrinsic barriers. Spatial segregation during the non-breeding season appears to provide an intrinsic barrier to gene flow among seabird populations that otherwise occupy nearby or overlapping regions during breeding, but how this is achieved remains unclear. Here we show that the two genetically distinct populations of Cook's petrel (Pterodroma cookii) exhibit transequatorial separation of non-breeding ranges at contemporary (ca. 2–3 yrs) and historical (ca. 100 yrs) time scales. Segregation during the non-breeding season per se appears as …

Commentary: Selecting Synaptic Partners: Grasping The Role Of Unc- 6/Netrin, Q L. Ch'ng
Faculty Publications, Biological Sciences
Forming synaptic connections of the appropriate strength between specific neurons is crucial for constructing neural circuits to control behavior. A recent paper in Neural Development describes the use of a synapse-specific label in Caenorhabditis elegans to implicate local UNC-6/netrin signaling in this developmental process. Thus, as well as their well known roles in cell migration and axon guidance, UNC-6/netrin signals distinguish an appropriate synaptic partner from other potential targets.

Speciation, Luminescence, And Alkaline Fluorescence Quenching Of 4-(2-Methylbutyl)Aminodipicolinic Acid (H2mebadpa), Gilles Muller, A. J. Ingram, A. G. Dunpal, R. Dipietro
Faculty Publications, Chemistry
4-(2-Methylbutyl)aminodipicolinic acid (H2MEBADPA) has been synthesized and fully characterized in terms of aqueous phase protonation constants (pKa's) and photophysical measurements. The pKa's were determined by spectrophotometric titrations, utilizing a fully sealed titration system. Photophysical measurements consisted of room temperature fluorescence and frozen solution phosphorescence as well as quantum yield determinations at various pH, which showed that only fully deprotonated MEBADPA2– is appreciably emissive. The fluorescence of MEBADPA2– has been determined to be quenched by hydroxide and methoxide anions, most likely through base-catalyzed excited-state tautomerism or proton transfer. This quenching phenomenon has been quantitatively explored through steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence measurements. …

Age-Associated Alterations In The F344xbn Rat Heart And The Efficacy Of Chronic Acetaminophen Ingestion As A Therapeutic Approach, Sunil K. Kakarla
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Despite advances in therapeutic and diagnostic strategies cardiovascular disease still remains the leading cause of death in older people. Recent studies suggest that age- related elevations in oxidative stress are associated with increases in cardiac apoptosis and compensatory hypertrophy of the remaining cardiomyocytes. Acetaminophen has been shown to exhibit cardioprotective effects following ischemia-reperfusion injury by acting as an antioxidant. Here, we investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying aging associated cardiac remodeling in male F344XBN rats and examine the efficacy of chronic acetaminophen ingestion as a therapeutic approach.
Aging in male F344XBN rats is characterized by a significant increase in heart size, …

Identification Of Genes Involved In Hematopoietic Stem Cell Differentiation And Leukemia Differentiation And Leukemia, Jasjeet Bhullar
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Hematopoiesis is maintained by a proper balance between self renewal and multipotent differentiation of the hematopoietic stem cells (HSC). Acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) is characterized by the blockage in the differentiation of HSC, while self renewal and proliferation is preserved. It is important to understand the mechanisms involved in the inhibition of hematopoietic differentiation and maintenance of the HSC state in order to develop better therapies for AML. In these studies I have explored the role of Hsp90, omega-3 fatty acids and YB-1 in hematopoietic differentiation. EML, a hematopoietic precursor cell line, was used as a model for the hematopoietic …

Altered Regulation Of Mitogen-Activated Protein Kinases And Glut4 Expression In Skeletal Muscle, Liver, Heart And Kidney Of Obese Zucker Rat, Sudarsanam Kundla
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Metabolic syndrome is characterized by insulin resistance and hyperglycemia. The molecular mechanism(s) underlying this alteration in skeletal muscle, liver, kidneys and heart in metabolic syndrome patients are presently unclear. Recent data have demonstrated that the p38and extracellular-signal-regulated kinases (ERK 1/2) - mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) proteins may be involved in the regulation of (Glucose transporter type 4) GLUT4 expression levels. Other data have suggested that miRNA may also play a role. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to compare the tissue content, phosphorylation of protein kinases (AKT), p38, c-JUN Nterminal kinase(JNK), ERK1/2, GLUT4 and transcriptional factor Myocyte enhancer factor-2 …

Long distance migrations by ungulate species often surpass the boundaries of preservation areas where conflicts with various publics lead to management actions that can threaten populations. We chose the partially migratory bison (Bison bison) population in Yellowstone National Park as an example of integrating science into management policies to better conserve migratory ungulates. Approximately 60% of these bison have been exposed to bovine brucellosis and thousands of migrants exiting the park boundary have been culled during the past two decades to reduce the risk of disease transmission to cattle. Data were assimilated using models representing competing hypotheses of bison migration …

Background: A simulation model based on remote sensing data for spatial vegetation properties has been used to estimate ecosystem carbon fluxes across Yellowstone National Park (YNP). The CASA (Carnegie Ames Stanford Approach) model was applied at a regional scale to estimate seasonal and annual carbon fluxes as net primary production (NPP) and soil respiration components. Predicted net ecosystem production (NEP) flux of CO2 is estimated from the model for carbon sinks and sources over multi-year periods that varied in climate and (wildfire) disturbance histories. Monthly Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) image coverages from the NASA Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument …
