A Guide To Fuels Management In Riparian Areas Of The Interior West, Final Report, Kathleen A. Dwire, Kristen E. Meyer, Sandra E. Ryan, Gregg Riegel, Timothy Burton

Joint Fire Science Program Synthesis Reports

Fuel treatments in riparian areas pose distinct challenges. Riparian areas are protected by administrative regulations, many of which are largely custodial and restrict active management. However, riparian areas have also been affected by fire suppression, land use, and disturbance and manipulative treatments of fuels may be needed to maintain riparian biodiversity and restore valued functions. This project is a synthesis of the current knowledge regarding fuels treatments in riparian areas of the interior western USA. It summarizes the most recent scientific literature, but also incorporates the practical knowledge gained by resource managers who have been utilizing different techniques to reduce …

Synthesis Of Knowledge: Fire History And Climate Change, William T. Sommers, Stanley G. Coloff, Susan G. Conard

Joint Fire Science Program Synthesis Reports

This report synthesizes available fire history and climate change scientific knowledge to aid managers with fire decisions in the face of ongoing 21st century climate change. Fire history and climate change (FHCC) have been ongoing for over 400 million years of Earth history, but increasing human influences during the Holocene Epoch have changed both climate and fire regimes. We describe basic concepts of climate science and explain the causes of accelerating 21st century climate change. Fire regimes and ecosystem classifications serve to unify ecological and climate factors influencing fire, and are useful for applying fire history and climate change information …

Infectious Diseases In Yellowstone’S Canid Community, Emily S. Almberg, Paul C. Cross, L. David Mech, Doug W. Smith, Jennifer W. Sheldon, Robert L. Crabtree

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

Each summer Yellowstone Wolf Project staff visit den sites to monitor the success of wolf reproduction and pup rearing behavior. For the purposes of wolf monitoring, Yellowstone National Park (YNP) is divided into two study areas, the northern range and the interior, each distinguished by their ecological and physiographical differences. The 1,000 square kilometer northern range, characterized by lower elevations (1,500–2,200 m), serves as prime winter habitat for ungulates and supports a higher density of wolves than the interior (20–99 wolves/1,000 km2 versus 2–11 wolves/1,000 km2). The interior of the park encompasses 7,991 square kilometers, is higher …

Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients And Aquatic Organisms, Christian G. Daughton, Bryan W. Brooks Jan 2011

Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients And Aquatic Organisms, Christian G. Daughton, Bryan W. Brooks

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

The presence of active pharmaceuticals ingredients (APIs) in aquatic systems has led in recent years to a burgeoning literature examining environmental occurrence, fate, effects, risk assessment, and treatability of these compounds. The vast preponderance of studies aimed at identifying and quantifying contaminant residues in aquatic tissues have involved the conventional and legacy pollutants. Comparatively few studies have been targeted at APIs, primarily those that are lipophilic. Although APIs have received much attention as "emerging" contaminants of concern, it is important to recognize that traditional approaches to understand and predict exposure and effects of other environmental organic contaminant classes mayor may …

Wetland Features And Landscape Context Predict The Risk Of Wetland Habitat Loss, Kevin J. Gutzwiller, Curtis H. Flather

United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Wetlands generally provide significant ecosystem services and function as important harbors of biodiversity. To ensure that these habitats are conserved, an efficient means of identifying wetlands at risk of conversion is needed, especially in the southern United States where the rate of wetland loss has been highest in recent decades. We used multivariate adaptive regression splines to develop a model to predict the risk of wetland habitat loss as a function of wetland features and landscape context. Fates of wetland habitats from 1992 to 1997 were obtained from the National Resources Inventory for the U.S. Forest Service’s Southern Region, and …

Ringeisen, Wesley C. Sanders, Paul E. Sheehan, Jeremy J. Pietron, Jeffrey W. Baldwin, Lloyd J. Nadeau, Glenn R. Johnson, Meghann Ribbens, Steven E. Finkel, Kenneth H. Nealson

United States Navy: Publications

Shewanella-containing microbial fuel cells (MFCs) typically use the fresh water wild-type strain Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 due to its metabolic diversity and facultative oxidant tolerance. However, S. oneidensis MR-1 is not capable of metabolizing polysaccharides for extracellular electron transfer. The applicability of Shewanella japonica (an agar-lytic Shewanella strain) for power applications was analyzed using a diverse array of carbon sources for current generation from MFCs, cellular physiological responses at an electrode surface, biofilm formation, and the presence of soluble extracellular mediators for electron transfer to carbon electrodes. Critically, air-exposed S. japonica utilizes biosynthesized extracellular mediators for electron transfer to carbon …

Time-Lapse Three-Dimensional Inversion Of Complex Conductivity Data Using An Active Time Constrained (Atc) Approach, M. Karaoulis, A. Revil, D. D. Werkema, B. J. Minsley, W. F. Woodruff, A. Kemna

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

Induced polarization (more precisely the magnitude and phase of impedance of the subsurface) is measured using a network of electrodes located at the ground surface or in boreholes. This method yields important information related to the distribution of permeability and contaminants in the shallow subsurface. We propose a new time-lapse 3-D modelling and inversion algorithm to image the evolution of complex conductivity over time.We discretize the subsurface using hexahedron cells. Each cell is assigned a complex resistivity or conductivity value. Using the finite-element approach, we model the in-phase and out-of-phase (quadrature) electrical potentials on the 3-D grid, which are then …

Modifiable Hyperbranched Polyester Drug Delivery Systems, Dorothy Ogden Jan 2011

Modifiable Hyperbranched Polyester Drug Delivery Systems, Dorothy Ogden

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

This work encompassed synthesis and characterization of biocompatible hyperbranched polyester drug delivery systems prepared with fumaric acid, glycerol and polyethylene glycol. The polymers were manufactured in the melt utilizing A2 + CB2 polymerization. The ratio of A2:CB2 was modified and excess B was added to end-cap the polymers to avoid cross-linking. Fumaric acid was selected as the A2 monomer because the double bond provided a site for polymer backbone modification or covalent attachment of active pharmaceutical ingredients. Acetaminophen and Ondansetron Hydrochloride were added to evaluate feasibility of using the polyesters as drug delivery systems. The weight average molecular weight of …

The Harsh Sting Of Rejection: Rejection Sensitivity, Attachment Styles, Autobiographical Memory, And Why Some Feel The Sting More Than Others, Aili Weeks Jan 2011

The Harsh Sting Of Rejection: Rejection Sensitivity, Attachment Styles, Autobiographical Memory, And Why Some Feel The Sting More Than Others, Aili Weeks

Psychology Honors Papers

Rejection sensitivity is the disposition to anxiously expect, readily perceive, and intensely react to rejection (Downey & Feldman, 1996). When highly RS people are rejected, they typically react with hostility and aggression against those who caused the perceived rejection and their intimate relationships are challenging because of this. College-age women and men (N=160) recorded three autobiographical memories of rejection, completed the Rejection Sensitivity Questionnaire (RSQ), Relationship Questionnaire (RQ) to measure attachment styles, the Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS) to measure their overall happiness with their lives, and the Thinking About Life Experiences (TALE) questionnaire to measure how the participants used …

The Effect Of High-Fidelity Human Patient Simulation On Stress Levels Of Associate Degree Novice Nursing Students, Sallie Beth Todd Jan 2011

The Effect Of High-Fidelity Human Patient Simulation On Stress Levels Of Associate Degree Novice Nursing Students, Sallie Beth Todd

Nursing Theses and Capstone Projects

The clinical learning environment is an important component in the educational development of a student nurse. Nursing students have identified the clinical experience as one of the most stress producing components of their nursing education. Past research has shown high levels of stress can lead to decreased learning, affect clinical performance, increase clinical errors, and threaten physical or psychiatric wellbeing. Nurse educators' primary responsibilities are to help students effectively cope with their initial stress and facilitate student learning by applying the knowledge they gain in the classroom to the clinical environment. To allow students the opportunity to integrate theory into …

Effects Of Early Initiation Of Induced Therapeutic Hypothermia, Frank Castelblanco Jan 2011

Effects Of Early Initiation Of Induced Therapeutic Hypothermia, Frank Castelblanco

Nursing Theses and Capstone Projects

Cardiac arrests are responsible for about 325,000 deaths annually in the United States (Heart Rhythm Foundation, 2010). The majority of these cardiac arrests occur outside the hospital setting, with a dismal national survival rate of 8% (American Heart Association, 2010). The Bernard (2002) and HACA (2002) studies demonstrated that by initiating therapeutic hypothermia as a treatment modality for cardiac arrests the survival rate could be as high as 49% and 55% respectively. Therapeutic hypothermia can be initiated in many different settings. The question remains, does the setting of the initiation of therapeutic hypothermia effect patient outcomes? The purpose of this …

The Nurse's Knowledge Of Blood Conservation As A Part Of Blood Management, Lindsey Putnam Austin Jan 2011

The Nurse's Knowledge Of Blood Conservation As A Part Of Blood Management, Lindsey Putnam Austin

Nursing Theses and Capstone Projects

Medicine has historically regarded blood transfusion as an integral component of major surgery or illness. However, clinical studies have shown that allogeneic blood transfusions are associated with increased morbidity and decreased survival. Knowledge of this research and the concepts of blood conservation so as to avoid unnecessary blood transfusions is needed in order to deliver holistic care and serve as patient advocate. This knowledge reaches every specialty of nursing care.

This study of the nurse's knowledge of blood conservation as a part of blood management utilizes The Conservation Model developed by Myra E. Levine in 1973. Levine's work is a …

Analysis Of Sustainable Pest Control Using A Pesticide And A Screened Refuge, John Ringland, Prasanth George Jan 2011

Analysis Of Sustainable Pest Control Using A Pesticide And A Screened Refuge, John Ringland, Prasanth George

Mathematics Faculty Publications

We describe and analyze a ‘screened refuge’ technique for indefinitely sustaining control of insect pests using transgenic pesticidal crops or an applied pesticide, even when resistance is not recessive. The screen is a physical barrier that restricts pest movement. In a deterministic discrete‐time model of the use of this technique, we obtain asymptotic analytical formulas for the two important equilibria of the system in terms of the refuge size and the pest fitnesses, mutation rates, and mobility out of and into the refuge. One of the equilibria is stable and is the point at which the pest population is controlled. …

A Study Of The Presence Of Relational Aggression In The Adult Population, Kathy C. Williams Jan 2011

A Study Of The Presence Of Relational Aggression In The Adult Population, Kathy C. Williams

Nursing Theses and Capstone Projects

Aggression can result in a challenge of the basic human need for safety and security (Plotnik, 1999). Historically there has been extensive research regarding physical aggression. However, only in the past two decades has relational aggression received attention. Most research studies regarding relational aggression have focused upon children, adolescents and young adults. The purpose of this study was to explore the presence of relational aggression in the adult population. The Self-Report of Aggression and Social Behavior Measure tool was used to survey a convenience sample of 67 nursing students. The participants were students enrolled in the school of nursing (associate, …

What Mcdonald Means For Unenumerated Rights, A. Christopher Bryant Jan 2011

What Mcdonald Means For Unenumerated Rights, A. Christopher Bryant

Faculty Articles and Other Publications

In June a splintered Supreme Court held in McDonald v. City of Chicago that the Second Amendment applied to state and local governments. But the case was about much more than handguns. It presented the Court with an unprecedented opportunity to correct its own erroneous precedent and revive the Fourteenth Amendment’s Privileges or Immunities Clause. The plurality declined the offer not, as Justice Alito’s opinion suggested, out of a profound respect for stare decisis, but rather because at least four Justices like the consequences of that ancient error, especially insofar as unenumerated rights are concerned. This observation in turn raises …

Engaged Client-Centered Representation Of The Moral Foundations Of The Lawyer-Client Relationship, Katherine R. Kruse Jan 2011

Engaged Client-Centered Representation Of The Moral Foundations Of The Lawyer-Client Relationship, Katherine R. Kruse

Hofstra Law Review

The field of legal ethics, as we know it today, has grown out of thoughtful, systematic grounding of lawyers’ duties in a comprehensive understanding of lawyers’ roles and the situating of lawyers’ roles in underlying theories of law, morality and justice. Unfortunately, the field of theoretical legal ethics has mostly lost track of the thing at the heart of a lawyers’ role: the integrity of the lawyer-client relationship. The field of theoretical legal ethics has developed in ways that are deeply lawyer-centered rather than fundamentally client-centered. This paper, which was delivered at Hofstra Law School as the Lichtenstein Distinguished Professor …
