Chilean Blue Whales As A Case Study To Illustrate Methods To Estimate Abundance And Evaluate Conservation Status Of Rare Species, Rob Williams, Sharon L. Hedley, Trevor A. Branch, Mark B. Bravington, Alexandre N. Zerbini, Ken P. Findlay
United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications
Often abundance of rare species cannot be estimated with conventional design-based methods, so we illustrate with a population of blue whales ( Balaenoptera musculus) a spatial model-based method to estimate abundance. We analyzed data from line-transect surveys of blue whales off the coast of Chile, where the population was hunted to low levels. Field protocols allowed deviation from planned track lines to collect identification photographs and tissue samples for genetic analyses, which resulted in an ad hoc sampling design with increased effort in areas of higher densities. Thus, we used spatial modeling methods to estimate abundance. Spatial models are increasingly …
Performing Femininity: Rae Bourbon And Christine Jorgensen Onstage, Taylor Riccio
Performing Femininity: Rae Bourbon And Christine Jorgensen Onstage, Taylor Riccio
American Studies Senior Theses
Drag performers and transexuals exist on the margins of the two gender binary. By existing on these margins these performers use both their physical bodies and humor to lampoon and subvert the gender binary and broaden the understanding of how gender is performed. Two performers, Rae Bourbon, a female impersonator, and Christine Jorgensen, a transexual who became a performer, placed their marginalized bodies on the stage and by doing so they heighten the subversion and critique of gender inherent in their performances.Gender is a normalizing force that dominates human interactions. Kessler and McKenna open their work on gender with the …

The accumulation of dicarbonyl compounds, methylglyoxal (MG) and glyoxal (G), has been observed in diabetic conditions. They are formed from nonoxidative mechanisms in anaerobic glycolysis and lipid peroxidation, and they act as advanced glycation endproduct (AGE) precursors. The objective of this study was to monitor and characterize the AGE formation of human immunoglobulin G (hIgG) by MG and G using ultraviolet (UV) and fluorescence spectroscopy, circular dichroism (CD), and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization–mass spectrometry (MALDI–MS). hIgG was incubated over time with MG and G at different concentrations. Formation of AGE was monitored by UV and fluorescence spectroscopy. The effect of AGE …

Ballast Water Management Convention, 2004: Towards Combating Unintentional Transfer Of Harmful Aquatic Organisms And Pathogens, Sabitiyu Abosede Lawal
LLM Theses
The introduction of harmful aquatic organisms and pathogens transferred through ships' ballast water and sediments from one coastal region to another has ecological, economic, environmental, and human impacts. The international community, through numerous binding and non-binding instruments, also sought to combat this problem. Ultimately, the International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships' Ballast Water and Sediments, 2004 was adopted by the International Maritime Organization as the dedicated legal regime intended to prevent, control and ultimately eradicate the introduction and spread of harmful aquatic organisms and pathogens through ships' ballast water and sediments. By its Regulations, the Convention sets …

Evidence suggests that coronary heart disease (CHD) is the most common outcome of hypertension. Hypertension accelerates the development of atherosclerosis, and sustained elevation of blood pressure (BP) can destabilize vascular lesions and precipitate acute coronary events. Hypertension can cause myocardial ischemia in the absence of CHD. These cardiovascular risks attributed to hypertension can be reduced by optimal BP control. Although several antihypertensive agents exist, the choice of agent and the appropriate target BP for patients with CHD remain controversial. In this succinct paper, we examine the evidence and the mechanisms for the linkage between hypertension and CHD and we discuss …

This cross-sectional study (N = 4,144) compared three longitudinal dynatypes (Maintainers, Relapsers, and Stable Smokers) of smokers on baseline demographics, stage, addiction severity, and transtheoretical model effort effect variables. There were significant small-to-medium-sized differences between the Stable Smokers and the other two groups on stage, severity, and effort effect variables in both treatment and control groups. There were few significant, very small differences on baseline effort variables between Maintainers and Relapsers in the control, but not the treatment group. The ability to identify Stable Smokers at baseline could permit enhanced tailored treatments that could improve population cessation rates.
Differences Between Human Oriented And Machine Oriented Information Standards: Implications For Design Of Enterprise-Scale Information Systems, Joann Brooks, David Mann
Differences Between Human Oriented And Machine Oriented Information Standards: Implications For Design Of Enterprise-Scale Information Systems, Joann Brooks, David Mann
School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship
Enterprise-scale information systems are deeply entwined with the networks of social practice that use and support them. Yet “interoperability” between information systems and social communities of practice is not always easily achieved, because these disparate types of entities operate according to different logics and respond differently to innovation processes. In this paper we identify differences between the types of information standards used in information systems and those commonly used within social communities of practice, terming the former “machine oriented standards” and the latter “human oriented standards.” We then provide a catalog of commonly used human oriented standards. We conclude by …

Cellular dinitrosyl iron complexes (DNICs) have long been considered NO carriers. Although other physiological roles of DNICs have been postulated, their chemical functionality outside of NO transfer has not been demonstrated thus far. Here we report the unprecedented dioxygen reactivity of a N-bound {Fe(NO)2}10 DNIC, [Fe(TMEDA)(NO)2] (1). In the presence of O2, 1 becomes a nitrating agent that converts 2,4,-di-tert-butylphenol to 2,4-di-tert-butyl-6-nitrophenol via formation of a putative iron-peroxynitrite [Fe(TMEDA)(NO)(ONOO)] (2) that is stable below −80 °C. Iron K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy on 2 supports a …

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Physical education (PE) in public secondary schools is not being appreciated as a valuable discipline. Students are not required to meet the state PE requirements due to exemptions from articles of the California PE standards for which districts may apply. Interviews were conducted with local high school teachers and administrators to better understand how the lack of emphasis on PE has impacted the school curriculum and students, and what strides can be made to emphasize the educational value of PE. Evidence and research has shown that the greatest variable in student engagement and the educational quality of PE is the …

Hypoxic And Low Ph Water In The Nearshore Marine Environments Of Monterey Bay, California : Characterizing A Decade Of Oxygen And Ph, And Drivers Of Variability, J. Ashley Tomer Booth
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
A decade-long time series recorded in southern Monterey Bay, California demonstrates that the shallow, near-shore environment (17 m depth) is regularly inundated with pulses of cold, hypoxic and low pH water. During these episodes, oxygen can drop to biologically threatening levels, and pH levels were lower than expected. Weekly water chemistry monitoring revealed that the saturation state of aragonite (the more soluble form of calcium carbonate) was often below saturation and had a moderate positive relationship with pH, however, analytical and human error could be high. Pulses of hypoxia and low pH water with the greatest intensity arise at the …
Nitrate Transport To Coastal Monterey Bay : Investigating Source Inputs From Elkhorn Slough, Tanya Novak
Nitrate Transport To Coastal Monterey Bay : Investigating Source Inputs From Elkhorn Slough, Tanya Novak
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Nitrate transport from Elkhorn Slough (ES) to the nearshore surface waters of Monterey Bay is examined using two years of time-series data from the Land-Ocean Biogeochemical Observatory (LOBO). Hourly nitrate, temperature and salinity measurements from nearshore moorings 2.5 km north (summer, 2008) and 2.5 km south (summer– fall, 2009, winter 2010) of the Moss Landing Harbor entrance at 20-m depth were monitored with the objective of observing high nitrate events associated with terrestrial-sourced waters. Nearshore nitrate supply from ES was quantified in comparison to upwelling and internal waves based on estimates of volume transport and average nitrate concentration observed at …
Curious Food Procurement In The Eastern North Pacific Kyphosidae, Clinton J. Moran
Curious Food Procurement In The Eastern North Pacific Kyphosidae, Clinton J. Moran
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
The aims of this study were to quantify the kinematics of two feeding behaviors exhibited by G. nigricans. A scraping behavior was elicited by allowing G. nigricans to scrape from a block of brine shrimp gelatin and a picking behavior was elicited by allowing G. nigricans to feed on Ulva spp. During feeding events it became apparent that G. nigricans does not use, or has lost, the ability to suction feed. When feeding on non-attached diet items they approached their prey with their gape wide open until the prey was in their mouth, likely to reduce the bow wave created …

Chinese Parents’ Perspectives On Adolescent Sexuality Education, Wenli Liu, Kali S. Van Campen, Carolyn P. Edwards, Stephen T. Russell
Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications
There is growing interest in China to understand how young people learn about sexuality, but there are few existing studies about the role of parents as sex educators of their children. This study surveyed 694 Chinese parents of adolescents in three cities about their knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding sexuality education for their children. The majority supported sexuality education, yet few parents had provided it. High-income parents had more favorable sexual attitudes and, in turn, were more likely to educate children about sexuality. The findings provide insight into parents’ role in adolescents’ sexual behavior and can be useful to sexuality …

Leaks, Leakers, And Journalists: Adding Historical Context To The Age Of Wikileaks, Sandra Davidson
UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal
The United States government has charged Pfc. Bradley Manning with leaking to Julian Assange and WikiLeaks unprecedented amounts of classified information. Prior to publishing the Afghan War Logs, WikiLeaks provided the documents to The New York Times and other newspapers around the world. This article begins by reviewing how Manning reportedly leaked the documents about the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, as well as diplomatic cables. It then traces decades of legal precedents surrounding leaks, leakers, and journalists in the United States, suggesting similarities and differences between the past and present. This article thus provides a historical context for the …
