Synthesis And Characterization Of Molecularly Imprinted Cross-Linked Poly (4-Vinylpyridine) For The Recognition And Concentrationdetermination Of Bilirubin In Solution, Alex Aboagye
Theses
Molecular imprinting is a procedure for the preparation of artificial receptors for specific binding with target molecule. In this work molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) film for the recognition of bilirubin was synthesized and studied using the Quartz Crystal Microbalance (QCM). The MIP was coated on the QCM crystals and analyzed using QCM. 4-vinylpyridine was used as functional monomer, divinylbenzene as cross-linking agent and benzophenone as initiator. As a control, another polymer was prepared in the same way as the MIP but without the template monomer. The control polymer or the non-MIP exhibited very little affinity for the target molecule compared …

Tracing The Origins And Propagation Of African Easterly Waves And Mesoscale Convective Systems Using Pattern Recognition And Data Fusion, Chaunte' W. Lacewell
Theses
This thesis is focus on developing pattern recognition techniques to trace the origins and propagation of the Pre-Tropical Storm Debby (2006) African easterly waves (AEWs) and mesoscale convective systems (MCSs) using satellite imagery. The results are used to verify a numerical weather prediction (NWP) model. The pre-Debby MCSs’ movement and formation needs to be precisely and objectively tracked. These MCSs could be generated over mountains in North Africa, such as Ethiopian Highlands (EH), Darfur Mountains (DF), and Asir Mountains (AS), going through complicated splitting and merging processes. Thus, an objectively analyzed MCS movement is essential not only to help provide …
Classification Of Civilian Vehicle Sounds Using A Large Database Of Vehicle Sounds, David Tettey
Classification Of Civilian Vehicle Sounds Using A Large Database Of Vehicle Sounds, David Tettey
Theses
We have completed the building of an extensive database of civilian vehicle sounds. The database consists of correlated acoustic and seismic signatures of a large number (exceeding 850) of civilian vehicles. Each acoustic signature is obtained through two high-quality microphones separated by 25 feet, and whose signals are exactly synchronized. In this work, spectral and tristimulus features of civilian vehicle sounds are computed and then submitted to further processing using principal component analysis. The "super" features, derived after principal component analysis is performed, are then used for classification. In this research effort, the performance of the quadratic classifier with that …
Characterization Of Msw As A Feedstock Of Thermochemical Conversion, Harith Kumar Rojanala
Characterization Of Msw As A Feedstock Of Thermochemical Conversion, Harith Kumar Rojanala
Theses
The management of municipal solid waste (MSW) has become a significant environmental problem, especially in fast-growing cities. Hence the thermo chemical conversion of Municipal solid waste (MSW) has been proven as an attractive method of waste management to recover energy from MSW. This would minimize its environmental impact and decrease disposal costs. In this thesis, the MSW is characterized to determine the feasibility for thermo chemical conversion. The samples are collected from different MSW transfer locations across North Carolina. Selected physical and chemical properties such as the moisture content, heating value, elemental composition and thermal degradation characteristics of the samples …

Disability Trouble, Brad Areheart
Disability Trouble, Brad Areheart

In the 1960s, the term “gender” emerged in the academic literature to indicate the socially constructed nature of being a man or woman. The gender/sex binary soon became standard academic fare, with sex representing biology and gender representing sex’s social construct. However, in the 1980s feminists became concerned the gender/sex binary – by effectively designating sex as non-social – left room for biological determinism. These feminists made “gender trouble” in part by arguing biological sex was a social concept. The resulting scholarship on sex and gender enriched feminist thought and catalyzed civil rights through an expansion of legal protections. An almost …

Applying An Empirical Hydropathic Forcefield In Refinement May Improve Low-Resolution Protein X-Ray Crystal Structures, Vishal N. Koparde, J. Neel Scarsdale, Glen E. Kellogg
Medicinal Chemistry Publications
Background
The quality of X-ray crystallographic models for biomacromolecules refined from data obtained at high-resolution is assured by the data itself. However, at low-resolution, >3.0 Å, additional information is supplied by a forcefield coupled with an associated refinement protocol. These resulting structures are often of lower quality and thus unsuitable for downstream activities like structure-based drug discovery.
Methodology
An X-ray crystallography refinement protocol that enhances standard methodology by incorporating energy terms from the HINT (Hydropathic INTeractions) empirical forcefield is described. This protocol was tested by refining synthetic low-resolution structural data derived from 25 diverse high-resolution structures, and referencing the resulting …

The study of codon usage bias is an important research area that contributes to our understanding of molecular evolution, phylogenetic relationships, respiratory lifestyle, and other characteristics. Translational efficiency bias is perhaps the most well studied codon usage bias, as it is frequently utilized to predict relative protein expression levels. We present a novel approach to isolating translational efficiency bias in microbial genomes. There are several existent methods for isolating translational efficiency bias. Previous approaches are susceptible to the confounding influences of other potentially dominant biases. Additionally, existing approaches to identifying translational efficiency bias generally require both genomic sequence information and …

Population Changes And Location-Specific Differences For Otolith-Derived Age And Growth Of Recreationally Harvested Spotted Seatrout (Cynoscion Nebulosus) From Alabama In 2007, Matthew W. Johnson, Stephen A. Bortone, Bradley W. Klement, Robert L. Shipp
Gulf of Mexico Science
Spotted seatrout (Cynoscion nebulosus), is a nonmigratory game fish common in the Gulf of Mexico that is important in estuarine ecosystems. Population dynamics of spotted seatrout were examined using otolith-based age-and-growth models derived from observed and back-calculated length-at-age values. These data were used to identify sex-based differences and annular variation. Recent growth was quantified, using marginal increment analysis for comparisons between sexes and the two major bays in Alabama (Mobile Bay and Mississippi Sound). Sex ratios were also compared for these locations. Our results show that females were larger than males and that fish collected in Mobile Bay …

• Premise of the study : Recent analyses employing up to fi ve genes have provided numerous insights into angiosperm phylogeny, but many relationships have remained unresolved or poorly supported. In the hope of improving our understanding of angiosperm phylogeny, we expanded sampling of taxa and genes beyond previous analyses.
• Methods : We conducted two primary analyses based on 640 species representing 330 families. The fi rst included 25 260 aligned base pairs (bp) from 17 genes (representing all three plant genomes, i.e., nucleus, plastid, and mitochondrion). The second included 19 846 aligned bp from 13 genes (representing only …

Lea Proteins During Water Stress: Not Just For Plants Anymore, Steven C. Hand, Michael A. Menze, Mehmet Toner, Leaf Boswell, Daniel Moore
Faculty Research & Creative Activity
Late embryogenesis abundant (LEA) proteins are extremely hydrophilic proteins that were first identified in land plants. Intracellular accumulation is tightly correlated with acquisition of desiccation tolerance, and data support their capacity to stabilize other proteins and membranes during drying, especially in the presence of sugars like trehalose. Exciting reports now show LEA proteins are not restricted to plants; multiple forms are expressed in desiccation-tolerant animals from at least four phyla. We evaluate here the expression, subcellular localization, biochemical properties and potential functions of LEA proteins in animal species during water stress. LEA proteins are intrinsically unstructured in aqueous solution, but …

Quantitative Analysis Of Lignocellulosic Components Of Non-Treated And Steam Exploded Barley, Canola, Oat And Wheat Straw Using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, P. K. Adapa, L. G. Schonenau, Thomas Canam, T. Dumonceaux
Faculty Research & Creative Activity
Rapid and cost effective quantification of lignocellulosic components (cellulose, hemicelluloses and lignin) of agricultural biomass (barley, canola, oat and wheat) is essential to determine the effect of various pre-treatments (such as steam explosion) on biomass used as feedstock for the biofuel industry. Fourier Transformed Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy was considered as an option to achieve this objective. Regression equations having R2 values of 0.89, 0.99 and 0.98 were developed to predict the cellulose, hemicelluloses and lignin compounds of biomass, respectively. The average absolute difference in predicted and measured cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin in agricultural biomass was 7.5%, 2.5%, and 3.8%, respectively.

Contextualizing The Gospel To Muslims, Maya J. Morgan
Contextualizing The Gospel To Muslims, Maya J. Morgan
Seminary Masters Theses
Muslims are considered some of the least reached peoples in the world. As "Christianity" is often associated with Colonialism, the Crusades, and Western culture, traditional models of “casting the seed” have proven ineffective. Those seeking to share the goodness with Muslims must explore new contextual ways to communicate the message of Christ to the Islamic community. This thesis begins by defining and giving a brief history of contextualization. Basic methods of contextualization are explained, and issued of syncretism are addressed in chapter one.
Contextualization must be practiced when communicating the good news. Chapter two focuses on the aspects of cross-‐cultural …
