Comparative Aspects Of Africana Philosophy And The Continental-Analytic Divide, Tommy L. Lott Jan 2011

Comparative Aspects Of Africana Philosophy And The Continental-Analytic Divide, Tommy L. Lott

Comparative Philosophy

Critical engagement involving philosophers trained in continental and analytic traditions often takes its purpose to be a reconciliation of tensions arising from differences in style, or method. Critical engagement in Africana philosophy, however, is rarely focused on method, style, or orientation because philosophic research in this field, regardless of orientation, has had to accommodate its empirical grounding in disciplines outside of philosophy. I focus primarily on the comparative dimensions of three important strands of this research: (1) a history of ideas, (2) a problem-orientation, and (3) a sub-area specialization, to indicate why a need to reconcile tensions between continental and …

The Institutional Repository As A Tool For Librarians: Not Preaching To The Choir, Paul Royster Jan 2011

The Institutional Repository As A Tool For Librarians: Not Preaching To The Choir, Paul Royster

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Presentations

What makes the Institutional Repository a good tool for librarians who are not IR managers? Or (for IR managers): "How to get librarians to buy in to the repository?" An Institutional Repository is different from most other library functions. Instead of acquiring resources from the world marketplace to deliver to a local community, it acquires locally developed resources and delivers these to a worldwide community.

Ten reasons why librarians should support the IR:
1. Earn the respect of your administration
2. Earn the love of the faculty
3. Provide persistent URLs
4. Preserve digital assets
5. Make the Library the …

Application Of Time Domain Reflectometers In Urban Settings, Thomas P. O'Connor, Amy Row, Emilie Stander, Michael Borst

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

Time domain reflectometers (TDRs) are in-situ monitoring probes that record soil moisture content when calibrated to a particular soil. Typically TDRs are used in agricultural settings, but this technology may also be applied to urban soils. The Urban Watershed Management Branch located at the Edison Environmental Center (EEC) has been exploring the use of TDRs as a way to monitor stormwater infiltration practices. TDRs are installed in pilot- and full-scale bioretention units (e.g., rain gardens). The TDRs are capable of measuring soil moisture and sensing the wetting front as the stormwater infiltrates through the planting media and into the native …

Is The Value Of Bioprospecting Contracts Too Low?, Anil Markandya, Paulo A.L.D. Nunes Jan 2011

Is The Value Of Bioprospecting Contracts Too Low?, Anil Markandya, Paulo A.L.D. Nunes

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

In order to regulate the proliferated bioprospecting and protect the biological diversity in the source countries, the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) established a legal framework for the reciprocal transfer of biological materials between the interested parties in bioprospecting activities, subject to the Prior Informed Content (PIC) principles and a set of mutually agreed items on equitable sharing of benefits (CBD 1992, Bhat 1999; Ten Kate and Laird 1999; Dedeurwaerdere 2005). Although interesting and valuable to the cause of conservation, there is a feeling that the ‘price’ being paid under these arrangements is too low. Somehow ecologists argue that, surely, …

Governing A Common-Pool Resource In A Directed Network, Lionel Richefort, Patrick Point Jan 2011

Governing A Common-Pool Resource In A Directed Network, Lionel Richefort, Patrick Point

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

A local public-good game played on directed networks is analyzed. The model is motivated by one-way flows of hydrological influence between cities of a river basin that may shape the level of their contribution to the conservation of wetlands. It is shown that in many (but not all) directed networks, there exists an equilibrium, sometimes socially desirable, in which some stakeholders exert maximal effort and the others free ride. It is also shown that more directed links are not always better. Finally, the model is applied to the conservation of wetlands in the Gironde estuary (France).

Robust Control And Hot Spots In Dynamic Spatially Interconnected Systems, William Brock, Anastasios Xepapadeas Jan 2011

Robust Control And Hot Spots In Dynamic Spatially Interconnected Systems, William Brock, Anastasios Xepapadeas

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

This paper develops linear quadratic robust control theory for a class of spatially invariant distributed control systems that appear in areas of economics such as New Economic Geography, management of ecological systems, optimal harvesting of spatially mobile species, and the like. Since this class of problems has an infinite dimensional state and control space it would appear analytically intractable. We show that by Fourier transforming the problem, the solution decomposes into a countable number of finite state space robust control problems each of which can be solved by standard methods. We use this convenient property to characterize “hot spots” which …

Population-Wide Model-Free Quantification Of Blood-Brain-Barrier Dynamics In Multiple Sclerosis, Russell T. Shinohara, Ciprian Crainiceanu, Brian Caffo, María Inés Gaitán, Daniel Reich Jan 2011

Population-Wide Model-Free Quantification Of Blood-Brain-Barrier Dynamics In Multiple Sclerosis, Russell T. Shinohara, Ciprian Crainiceanu, Brian Caffo, María Inés Gaitán, Daniel Reich

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

The processes by which new white matter lesions in multiple sclerosis (MS) develop are only partially understood. Much of this understanding has come through magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the human brain. One of the hallmarks of new lesion development in MS is enhancement on T1-weighted MRI scans following the intravenous administration of a gadolinium-based contrast agent that shortens the longitudinal relaxation time of the tissue. This visible enhancement in the MRI results from the opening of the blood-brain barrier and reveals areas of active inflammation. The incidence and number of existing enhancing lesions are common outcome measures used in …

High Power, Low Frequency Ultrasound: Meniscal Tissue Interaction And Ablation Characteristics, Brendan O'Daly, Edmund Morris, Graham Gavin, Conor Keane, John O Byrne, Garrett Mcguinness

Articles

Abstract—This study evaluates high power low frequency ultrasound transmitted via a flat vibrating probe tip as an alternative technology for meniscal debridement in the bovine knee. An experimental force controlled testing rig was constructed using a 20 kHz ultrasonic probe suspended vertically from a load cell. Effect of variation in amplitude of distal tip displacement (242–494 mm peak-peak) settings and force (2.5–4.5 N) on tissue removal rate (TRR) and penetration rate (PR) for 52 bovine meniscus samples was analyzed. Temperature elevation in residual meniscus was measured by embedded thermocouples and histologic analysis. As amplitude or force increases, there is a …

Redd And International Organizations, Valentina Giannini Jan 2011

Redd And International Organizations, Valentina Giannini

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

Climate change mitigation can be achieved, according to many, by means of Reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in the Tropics (REDD). Within the climate change policy debate we thus find discussions on how to reduce GHG emissions by designing appropriate REDD programmes and projects. In this paper I try to capture this debate by looking at the role of five major international organizations, which were chosen to represent the different aspects related to REDD. In order for REDD to be successful, not only GHG reduction, but also multiple benefits should be achieved: indigenous and local peoples’ involvement, livelihood …

Library Space: Dimensions Of The Imagination, Michael D. Miller

Robert E. Kennedy Library

For those who can live with ambiguity and who are not risk adverse, these are exciting times to be working in libraries. We are a profession that is reinventing itself and how we do business. The 20th century model of the library is fading and the successful 21st century library model is only beginning to emerge. The impact of technology is radically and permanently changing the nature of our collections, services, and staff and with it our use of space. There is a story evolving about how the creative repurposing of library space is changing the perceptions of the library …

Cluster Space Gradient Contour Tracking For Mobile Multi-Robot Systems, Thomas Adamek Jan 2011

Cluster Space Gradient Contour Tracking For Mobile Multi-Robot Systems, Thomas Adamek

Mechanical Engineering Master's Theses

Multi-robot systems have the potential to exceed the performance of many existing robotic systems by taking advantage of the cluster’s redundancy, coverage and flexibility. These unique characteristics of multi-robot systems allow them to perform tasks such as distributed sensing, gradient climbing, and collaborative work more effectively than any single robot system. The purpose of this research was to augment the existing cluster space control technique in order to demonstrate effective gradient-based functionality, specifically, that of tracking gradient contours of specified concentration levels. To do this, we needed first to estimate the direction of the gradient and/or contour based on the …

Assessing Student Critical Thinking Using Structured Vs. Unstructured Case Analysis, Jennifer Collins, Angela Tidwell Lewis, Shawnta Friday-Stroud Jan 2011

Assessing Student Critical Thinking Using Structured Vs. Unstructured Case Analysis, Jennifer Collins, Angela Tidwell Lewis, Shawnta Friday-Stroud

Journal of Business, Industry, and Economics

Critical thinking is one of the learning goals noted in the accreditation standards of the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business International (AACSBI). As a learning goal, critical thinking is measured to demonstrate that program outcomes are meeting expectations established by the institution using a systematic process. The assessment or assurance of learning process affords a business school the opportunity to gather data in a standardized format, which is used to assess program outcomes. This paper examines the data recently collected in Strategic Management, a capstone course for MBA students used to assess student critical thinking and the role …

Discovering Inner Ear And Central Auditory System Cellular Pathways That Might Contribute To Age-Related Hearing Loss, Xiaoxi Liu Jan 2011

Discovering Inner Ear And Central Auditory System Cellular Pathways That Might Contribute To Age-Related Hearing Loss, Xiaoxi Liu

Theses

Age-related hearing loss (ARHL) is a prevalent communication problem among senior citizens. Previous work (Tadros et al., 2008) has revealed genes which change their expression significantly with aging and hearing loss. However, this study is limited as it mainly focuses on apoptosis-related genes. Genes that regulate biological pathways other than apoptosis might also contribute to the development of age-related hearing loss, as suggested by some studies (Tadros et al., 2007; Souza et al., 2008). In order to circumvent this limitation and to better understand the underlying mechanisms of this communication problem, a free computational tool called Gene Set Enrichment Analysis …

Spectroscopic And Computational Insight Into Weak Noncovalent Interactions In Crystalline Pyrimidine, Ashley M. Wright, Lynn V. Joe, Austin A. Howard, Gregory S. Tschumper, Nathan I. Hammer

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Effects of weak C-H⋯N interactions on the vibrational spectrum of crystalline pyrimidine are studied using Raman spectroscopy and electronic structure computations. When pyrimidine transitions from the liquid to solid state, peaks in the Raman spectrum exhibit non-uniform shifts. Calculations performed on a cluster of nine pyrimidine molecules (one pyrimidine molecule embedded in a field of its eight nearest neighbors in the crystalline geometry) predict that modes involving the movement of hydrogen atoms are associated with the observed shifts. Assignments of fundamentals and combination bands in both the liquid and solid states are also revised in the complicated C-H stretching region. …

Anti-Neuroblastoma Activity Of Gold Nanorods Bound With Gd2 Monoclonal Antibody Under Near-Infrared Laser Irradiation, Ching-An Peng, Chung-Hao Wang

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

High-risk neuroblastoma is one of the most common deaths in pediatric oncology. Current treatment of this disease involves a coordinated sequence of chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation. Further advances in therapy will require the targeting of tumor cells in a more selective and efficient way so that survival can be improved without substantially increasing toxicity. To achieve tumor-selective delivery, disialoganglioside (GD2) expressed by almost all neuroblastoma tumors represents a potential molecular target that can be exploited for tumor-selective delivery. In this study, GD2 monoclonal antibody (anti-GD2) was conjugated to gold nanorods (GNRs) which are one of anisotropic nanomaterials that can absorb …

Heparan Sulfate Proteoglycans Mediate Interstitial Flow Mechanotransduction Regulating Mmp-13 Expression And Cell Motility Via Fak-Erk In 3d Collagen, Zhong-Dong Shi, Hui Wang, John M. Tarbell

Publications and Research

Background Interstitial flow directly affects cells that reside in tissues and regulates tissue physiology and pathology by modulating important cellular processes including proliferation, differentiation, and migration. However, the structures that cells utilize to sense interstitial flow in a 3-dimensional (3D) environment have not yet been elucidated. Previously, we have shown that interstitial flow upregulates matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) expression in rat vascular smooth muscle cells (SMCs) and fibroblasts/myofibroblasts via activation of an ERK1/2-c-Jun pathway, which in turn promotes cell migration in collagen. Herein, we focused on uncovering the flow-induced mechanotransduction mechanism in 3D. Methodology/Principal Findings Cleavage of rat vascular SMC surface …

Connections Between Classical And Parametric Network Entropies, Matthias Dehmer, Abbe Mowshowitz, Frank Emmert-Streib Jan 2011

Connections Between Classical And Parametric Network Entropies, Matthias Dehmer, Abbe Mowshowitz, Frank Emmert-Streib

Publications and Research

This paper explores relationships between classical and parametric measures of graph (or network) complexity. Classical measures are based on vertex decompositions induced by equivalence relations. Parametric measures, on the other hand, are constructed by using information functions to assign probabilities to the vertices. The inequalities established in this paper relating classical and parametric measures lay a foundation for systematic classification of entropy-based measures of graph complexity.
