An Evolved Adeno-Associated Viral Variant Enhances Gene Delivery And Gene Targeting In Neural Stem Cells, Jae-Hyung Jang, James Koerber, Jung-Suk Kim, Prashanth Asuri, Tandis Vazin, Melissa Bartel, Albert Keung, Inchan Kwan, David Schaffer

Bioengineering

Gene delivery to, and gene targeting in, stem cells would be a highly enabling technology for basic science and biomedical application. Adeno-associated viral (AAV) vectors have demonstrated the capacity for efficient delivery to numerous cells, but their application to stem cells has been limited by low transduction efficiency. Due to their considerable advantages, however, engineering AAV delivery systems to enhance gene delivery to stem cells may have an impact in stem cell biology and therapy. Therefore, using several diverse AAV capsid libraries—including randomly mutagenized, DNA shuffled, and random peptide insertion variants—we applied directed evolution to create a “designer” AAV vector …

Transfected Mosquito Vectors, Stephen L. Dobson Jan 2011

Transfected Mosquito Vectors, Stephen L. Dobson

Entomology Faculty Patents

A method is provided for producing an artificial infection in a Culicidae (mosquito) species. The mosquitoes include species within the subfamilies Culicinae and Anophelinae, and the species include Aedes albopictus, Aedes aegypti and Aedes polynesiensis infected with a Wolbachia infection. The infection may be a strain of Wolbachia which does not normally or naturally infect the selected mosquito species. The artificially infected Aedes mosquito can be introduced into a mosquito population to control the reproduction capability of the population by introducing an incompatible Wolbachia infection. The present method can be used as a novel means to limit mosquito-borne pathogens and …

Berry Skin Development In Norton Grape: Distinct Patterns Of Transcriptional Regulation And Flavonoid Biosynthesis, Mohammad B. Ali, Susanne Howard, Shangwu Chen, Yechun Wang, Oliver Yu, Laszlo G. Kovacs, Wenping Qiu

College of Agriculture

Background: The complex and dynamic changes during grape berry development have been studied in Vitis vinifera, but little is known about these processes in other Vitis species. The grape variety 'Norton', with a major portion of its genome derived from Vitis aestivalis, maintains high levels of malic acid and phenolic acids in the ripening berries in comparison with V. vinifera varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon. Furthermore, Norton berries develop a remarkably high level of resistance to most fungal pathogens while Cabernet Sauvignon berries remain susceptible to those pathogens. The distinct characteristics of Norton and Cabernet Sauvignon merit a comprehensive analysis …

Genetic And Environmental Influences In Delinquent Peer Affiliation: From The Peer Network Approach, Ilhong Yun, Jinseong Cheong, Anthony Walsh Jan 2011

Genetic And Environmental Influences In Delinquent Peer Affiliation: From The Peer Network Approach, Ilhong Yun, Jinseong Cheong, Anthony Walsh

Criminal Justice Faculty Publications and Presentations

Mainstream criminologists have long maintained that delinquent peer group formation is largely a function of family-environmental variables, and have ignored self-selection into peer groups because of genetic proclivities. A small number of recent studies, however, suggest that genes are implicated in delinquent peer affiliation. Given the potentially far-reaching implication of such research findings, the authors replicate Beaver, Wright, & DeLisi's (2008) study, among others, using a direct measure of peer delinquency. That is, the authors analyze the Add Health genetic data employing a measure of peer delinquency which is based on the delinquency counts reported by peers themselves rather than …

Soil Organic Matter Dynamics In Bioenergy Cropping Systems, Jane Achando Khatenje Jan 2011

Soil Organic Matter Dynamics In Bioenergy Cropping Systems, Jane Achando Khatenje

Student Theses and Dissertations

Ethanol and other advanced biofuels from cellulosic biomass, plant stalks, trunks, stems, and leaves are renewable alternatives expected to significantly produce improved or expanded renewable energy sources to meet the current energy demand. Therefore, we need to better understand the production of renewable energy sources needs. The long term combined effects of tillage, cropping systems and nutrient sources fertilization on active and slow fractions of soil organic matter dynamics need to be realized. The objectives of this research are to: 1) determine the effects of different nutrient sources on soil organic matter dynamics and 2) determine the effects of bioenergy …

Mediating And Moderating Factors In Associations Between Physical And Relational Victimization And Social And Academic Competence Among Urban Adolescents, Lisa Ulmer Jan 2011

Mediating And Moderating Factors In Associations Between Physical And Relational Victimization And Social And Academic Competence Among Urban Adolescents, Lisa Ulmer

Theses and Dissertations

Peer victimization is prevalent among school-aged youth and is associated with difficulties including decreased academic and social competence. Although relations between victimization and academic and social competence have been examined, fewer studies have considered how underlying processes linking these constructs are related or whether relations differ for adolescent subgroups. The current study’s purpose was to examine potential mediating and moderating effects in associations between physical and relational victimization and academic and social competence. Participants included a predominantly African American sample of 271 adolescents participating in a longitudinal violence prevention project. Path models showed significant negative associations between teacher-rated physical victimization …

Developing Anaerobic Digestion Cooperatives In Ireland, Aoife Ní Ruanaigh, John Mcgrory Jan 2011

Developing Anaerobic Digestion Cooperatives In Ireland, Aoife Ní Ruanaigh, John Mcgrory

Dissertations

Anaerobic Digestion (AD) is a natural process of decomposition and decay that takes place in the absence of oxygen and by which organic matter is broken down to its simpler chemical components. AD plants could help Ireland meet its requirements under a number of EU Directives as landfills release far more greenhouse gas emissions than other forms of waste treatment. It is estimated that 37 million tonnes per year of animal manure are stored on farms before disposal. There are also 676,000 tonnes of municipal food and garden waste produced annually. This waste could be used in AD plants to …

Atman, Identity, And Emanation: Arguments For A Hindu Environmental Ethic, Christopher G. Framarin Jan 2011

Atman, Identity, And Emanation: Arguments For A Hindu Environmental Ethic, Christopher G. Framarin

Comparative Philosophy

Many contemporary authors argue that since certain Hindu texts and traditions claim that all living beings are fundamentally the same as Brahman (God), these texts and traditions provide the basis for an environmental ethic. I outline three common versions of this argument, and argue that each fails to meet at least one criterion for an environmental ethic. This doesn’t mean, however, that certain Hindu texts and traditions do not provide the basis for an environmental ethic. In the last section of the paper I briefly outline and defend an alternative, according to which all plants and animals have intrinsic value …
