Genomic structural variants (SVs) are abundant in humans, differing from other forms of variation in extent, origin and functional impact. Despite progress in SV characterization, the nucleotide resolution architecture of most SVs remains unknown. We constructed a map of unbalanced SVs (that is, copy number variants) based on whole genome DNA sequencing data from 185 human genomes, integrating evidence from complementary SV discovery approaches with extensive experimental validations. Our map encompassed 22,025 deletions and 6,000 additional SVs, including insertions and tandem duplications. Most SVs (53%) were mapped to nucleotide resolution, which facilitated analysing their origin and functional impact. We examined …

An Examination Of Parental Stress And Coping In The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (Picu), Cara Michelle Gallegos
An Examination Of Parental Stress And Coping In The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (Picu), Cara Michelle Gallegos
Nursing ETDs
Advances in medical science have increased the number of children surviving illnesses and injuries that would have otherwise been fatal. Parents who have a critically ill child in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) often experience extreme levels of stress and poor coping. The purpose of this exploratory study was to explore parental stress and coping in a diverse group of parents of a critically ill child. This exploratory study used a descriptive-comparative and correlational research design. The Resiliency Model of Family Stress, Adjustment, and Adaptation (McCubbin & McCubbin, 1993) was used as a theoretical framework for the study. A …

Multicultural Student Services Center
The eMCC is a bi-annual electronic publication from the University of Rhode Island’s Multicultural Center. It features original creative works from undergraduate/graduate students, staff/faculty members, and guest contributors. eMCC is a growing branch off of an idea that a wealth of diversity exists in our daily lives. Often, we continue on our ways without noticing the smallest details or the most simple gestures. eMCC strives to give light to the beauty we sometimes forget to see. In our first ground-breaking issue, we celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in a theme that questions, “How has community service …

Contributions To Scorpion Systematics. Iv. Observations On The Hadrurus “Spadix” Subgroup With A Description Of A New Species (Scorpiones: Caraboctonidae), Michael E. Soleglad, Victor Fet, Graeme Lowe
Euscorpius
In this study new data are presented on the “spadix” subgroup of genus Hadrurus, including the description of a new species, H. anzaborrego, sp. nov., found primarily in the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park (ABDSP) in southern California, USA. This species is distinguished by its internal trichobothrial pattern of the chela and its unique carapace pattern. The status of Hadrurus obscurus Williams, 1970 is discussed and new locality data for this species are provided. A phylogenetic key to the genera, species, and subspecies of subfamily Hadrurinae is provided.

We report the assembly of the 14,054 bp near complete sequencing of the mitochondrial genome of the legume pod borer (LPB), Maruca vitrata (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), which we subsequently used to estimate divergence and relationships within the lepidopteran lineage. The arrangement and orientation of the 13 protein-coding, 2 rRNA, and 19 tRNA genes sequenced was typical of insect mitochondrial DNA sequences described to date. The sequence contained a high A+T content of 80.1% and a bias for the use of codons with A or T nucleotides in the 3rd position. Transcript mapping with midgut and salivary gland ESTs for mitochondrial genome …

The androgen receptor (AR) is expressed in a subset of prostate stromal cells and functional stromal cell AR is required for normal prostate developmental and influences the growth of prostate tumors. Although we are broadly aware of the specifics of the genomic actions of AR in prostate cancer cells, relatively little is known regarding the gene targets of functional AR in prostate stromal cells. Here, we describe a novel human prostate stromal cell model that enabled us to study the effects of AR on gene expression in these cells. The model involves a genetically manipulated variant of immortalized human WPMY-1 …
