Widespread colonization by invasive species often obscures their underlying niche requirements. A robust inference into habitat requirements demands direct measures of invasive species performance linked with associated environmental conditions. In the context of general ecological theory, we investigated the niche requirements of Microstegium vimineum, an invasive grass in the U.S. that overruns native vegetation in forest understories. We examined M. vimineum’s performance and reproduction as a function of environmental drivers across forested and unforested habitats along a 100-km regional and climatic gradient in the southeastern U.S. from the southern Appalachian Mountains to the Georgia piedmont. We then measured M. vimineum …

Rickettsial diversity is intriguing in that some species are transmissible to vertebrates, while others appear exclusive to invertebrate hosts. Of particular interest is Rickettsia felis, identifiable in both stored product insect pests and hematophagous disease vectors. To understand rickettsial survival tactics in, and probable movement between, both insect systems will explicate the determinants of rickettsial pathogenicity. Towards this objective, a population of Liposcelis bostrychophila, common booklice, was successfully used for rickettsial isolation in ISE6 (tick-derived cells). Rickettsiae were also observed in L. bostrychophila by electron microscopy and in paraffin sections of booklice by immunofluorescence assay using anti-R. felis polyclonal antibody. …

Studies In Organic Synthesis: Part I: Total Synthesis Of Plakortethers F And G Part Ii: Carbon-Hydrogen Insertion On Diazosulfones And Diazosulfonates, Jinu Philip John Feb 2011

Studies In Organic Synthesis: Part I: Total Synthesis Of Plakortethers F And G Part Ii: Carbon-Hydrogen Insertion On Diazosulfones And Diazosulfonates, Jinu Philip John

Theses and Dissertations

This work consists of two independent studies. The first part of the dissertation focuses on the total synthesis of two marine based natural products, Plakortether F and G which represent a class of non-peroxide derivatives of Plakortin related metabolites that are isolated from the Caribbean sponge Plakortis simplex. The selective cytotoxic activity of Plakortethers against the RAW 264-7 cell line (murine macrophage) makes them promising candidates for biological studies. A strategy utilizing desymmetrization of a C2 symmetric intermediate was proposed and demonstrated to be effective for the synthesis of the core of Plakortethers. Initially, the symmetric intermediate could only be …

Pediatric Ethics Guidelines For Hereditary Medullary Thyroid Cancer, M. Sara Rosenthal, Douglas S. Diekema Feb 2011

Pediatric Ethics Guidelines For Hereditary Medullary Thyroid Cancer, M. Sara Rosenthal, Douglas S. Diekema

Internal Medicine Faculty Publications

Hereditary medullary thyroid cancer is an aggressive cancer for which there is no standard effective systemic therapy, but which can be prevented through genetic screening and prophylactic thyroidectomy. Although this cancer accounts for roughly 17% of all pediatric thyroid cancers, a significant percentage of affected families do not "accept" screening, while many gene carriers delay or refuse prophylactic thyroid surgery for their children. Current genetic screening practices in medullary thyroid cancer are inadequate; more than 50% of index patients with hereditary medullary thyroid cancer present with a thyroid mass; up to 75% have distant metastasis. These proposed pediatric ethics guidelines …

An Unnatural History, Sarah Hearn Feb 2011

An Unnatural History, Sarah Hearn

Theses

An Unnatural History is an installation that inhabits the space between the continuously shifting realms of science, pseudoscience and science fiction. This project documents the (fictional) discovery of a taxonomy of marine life containing and cooperating with the elements from the periodic table. As science and technology progress, we are constantly faced with redefining, reinterpreting and reconfiguring what we thought we knew about the world around us and previous scientific "facts" are revealed to have been constructed "beliefs." Using multiple modes of representation, An Unnatural History draws attention to the real, the imagined and what it means to visualize biological …

Population Functional Data Analysis Of Group Ica-Based Connectivity Measures From Fmri, Shanshan Li, Brian S. Caffo, Suresh Joel, Stewart Mostofsky, James Pekar, Susan Spear Bassett

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

In this manuscript, we use a two-stage decomposition for the analysis of func- tional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). In the first stage, spatial independent component analysis is applied to the group fMRI data to obtain common brain networks (spatial maps) and subject-specific mixing matrices (time courses). In the second stage, functional principal component analysis is utilized to decompose the mixing matrices into population- level eigenvectors and subject-specific loadings. Inference is performed using permutation-based exact conditional logistic regression for matched pairs data. Simulation studies suggest the ability of the decomposition methods to recover population brain networks and the major direction of …

Environmental Forcings Of Paleogene Southern Ocean Dinoflagellate Biogeography, Peter K. Bijl, Jörg Pross, Jeroen Warnaar, Catherine E. Stickley, Matthew Huber, Raquel Guerstein, Alexander J.P. Houben, Appy Sluijs, Henk Visscher, Henk Brinkhuis

Department of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences Faculty Publications

Despite warm polar climates and low meridional temperature gradients, a number of different high-latitude plankton assemblages were, to varying extents, dominated by endemic species during most of the Paleogene. To better understand the evolution of Paleogene plankton endemism in the high southern latitudes, we investigate the spatiotemporal distribution of the fossil remains of dinoflagellates, i.e., organic-walled cysts (dinocysts), and their response to changes in regional sea surface temperature (SST). We show that Paleocene and early Eocene (∼65–50 Ma) Southern Ocean dinocyst assemblages were largely cosmopolitan in nature but that a distinct switch from cosmopolitan-dominated to endemic-dominated assemblages (the so-called “transantarctic …

Design And Analysis Of Blast Induced Traumatic Brain Injury Mechanism Using A Surrogate Headform: Instrumentation And Outcomes, Eyitejumade A. Sogbesan

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Brain injury cases in military personnel exposed to improvised explosive devices (IED) in combat have been on the rise. In Iraq and Afghanistan improved helmets and body armor are not enough protection against blast wave threats. The United States military are sponsoring researchers and scientists around the globe to find the associations between pressure waves and traumatic brain injury (TBI).

Lack of accurate data and blast wave exposure information in returning soldiers has slowed the innovation needed to effectively diagnose TBI and other related brain injury as a result of pressure waves. More detailed data will be required to gain …
