Retinal: The Biological Role And Significance, Frances Flowers Feb 2011

Retinal: The Biological Role And Significance, Frances Flowers

Academic Symposium of Undergraduate Scholarship

Retinal, one of several vitamin A compounds serves a vital role in human vision (Tver and Russell, 458). Discovered in 1913, Vitamin A was the first vitamin to be discovered. The Vitamin A group includes the carotenoids, retinol and retinal. Each of these forms plays a significant role in animal vision, and vision is what led to vitamin A’s discovery. During the early 1900s, many researchers were conducting studies on the eyes of animals. They found that if the animals were consuming diets deficient in what are recognized today as vitamin A-rich sources, the animals’ eyes became inflamed and eventually …

Department of Radiation Oncology Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: This phase I study investigates the feasibility of carboplatin plus dose-dense (q2-week) pemetrexed given concurrently with radiotherapy (XRT) for locally advanced and oligometastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).

METHODS: Eligible patients had Stage III or IV (oligometastatic) NSCLC. Patients received XRT to 63 Gy in standard fractionation. Patients received concurrent carboplatin (AUC = 6) during weeks 1 and 5 of XRT, and pemetrexed during weeks 1, 3, 5, and 7 of XRT. The starting dose level (level 1) of pemetrexed was 300 mg/m2. Following the finding of dose limiting toxicity (DLT) in dose level 1, an amended dose level …

Improving Tree-Thinking One Learnable Skill At A Time, Kristy Lynn Halverson Feb 2011

Improving Tree-Thinking One Learnable Skill At A Time, Kristy Lynn Halverson

Faculty Publications

Representations are a critical way to communicate scientific knowledge. Systematists biologists are acknowledged as expert tree thinkers who can both read and build phylogenetic trees (e.g., cladograms) accurately. The purpose of this study was to identify the core skills essential to help college students overcome tree-thinking challenges. In this study, I used pre/posttests, interviews, weekly reflective journal entries, field notes from course observations, and student responses to coursework to learn how upper-level college biology students developed representational competence with phylogenetic trees. I identified essential core skills by investigating students' tree-thinking progression over the course of the semester. Three major patterns …

Thermodynamic, Sulfide, Redox Potential, And Ph Effects On Syngas Fermentation, Peng Hu Feb 2011

Thermodynamic, Sulfide, Redox Potential, And Ph Effects On Syngas Fermentation, Peng Hu

Theses and Dissertations

Recently, work in ethanol production is exploring the fermentation of syngas (primarily CO, CO2, and H2) following gasification of cellulosic biomass. The syngas fermentation by clostridium microbes utilizes the Wood-Ljungdahl metabolic pathway. Along this pathway, the intermediate Acetyl-CoA typically diverges to produce ethanol, acetic acid, and/or cell mass. To develop strategies for process optimization, a thermodynamic analysis was conducted that provided a detailed understanding of the favorability of the reactions along the metabolic pathway. Thermodynamic analysis provided identification of potentially limiting steps. Once these limiting reactions were identified, further thermodynamic analysis provided additional insights into the ways in which reaction …

Micropropagation And Medium-Term Conservation Of Rosa Pulverulenta, Somayeh Kavand, Maryam Jafarkhani Kermani, Ali Haghnazari, Pegah Khosravi, Mohamad Reza Azimi

Publications and Research

In Iran, a large number of Rosa species have been exposed to extinction and therefore preservation techniques are necessary to safeguard their future. In the present investigation, the objectives were to optimize the micropropagation and medium-term conservation of one of these wild species, Rosa pulverulenta. At proliferation stage, the maximum number of new leaves (9.6) were produced on the medium containing 4 µM BAP + 0 µM GA3, whereas the maximum number of axillary shoots (4.1) were observed in the medium containing 4 µM BAP + 3 µM GA3. The results for rooting experiments suggested …

Circular Single-Stranded Synthetic Dna Delivery Vectors For Microrna, Christine I. Seidl, Kevin Ryan Feb 2011

Circular Single-Stranded Synthetic Dna Delivery Vectors For Microrna, Christine I. Seidl, Kevin Ryan

Publications and Research

Single-stranded (ss) circular oligodeoxynucleotides were previously found to undergo rolling circle transcription (RCT) by phage and bacterial RNA polymerases (RNAPs) into tandemly repetitive RNA multimers. Here, we redesign them to encode minimal primary miRNA mimics, with the long term aim of intracellular transcription followed by RNA processing and maturation via endogenous pathways. We describe an improved method for circularizing ss synthetic DNA for RCT by using a recently described thermostable RNA ligase, which does not require a splint oligonucleotide to juxtapose the ligating ends. In vitro transcription of four templates demonstrates that the secondary structure inherent in miRNA-encoding vectors does …

Center for Oral Health Research Faculty Publications

Chagas disease, caused by infection with Trypanosoma cruzi, is an important cause of cardiovascular disease. It is increasingly clear that parasite-derived prostaglandins potently modulate host response and disease progression. Here, we report that treatment of experimental T. cruzi infection (Brazil strain) beginning 5 days post infection (dpi) with aspirin (ASA) increased mortality (2-fold) and parasitemia (12-fold). However, there were no differences regarding histopathology or cardiac structure or function. Delayed treatment with ASA (20 mg/kg) beginning 60 dpi did not increase parasitemia or mortality but improved ejection fraction. ASA treatment diminished the profile of parasite- and host-derived circulating prostaglandins in infected …

Exposure To Ultraviolet Radiation Causes Proteomic Changes In Embryos Of The Purple Sea Urchin, Strongylocentrotus Purpuratus, Joseph P. Campanale, Lars Tomanek, Nikki L. Adams

Biological Sciences

We performed experiments to determine how environmentally relevant ultraviolet radiation (UVR) affects protein expression during early development in the sea urchin, Strongylocentrotus purpuratus. To model the protein-mediated cell cycle response to UV-irradiation, six batches of embryos were exposed to UVR, monitored for both delays in the first mitotic division and changes in the proteome at two specific developmental time points. Embryos were exposed to or protected from artificial UVR (11.5 W/m2) for 25 or 60 min. These levels of UVR are within the range we have measured in coastal waters between 0.5 and 2 m. Embryos treated with …

Genome-Wide Discovery Of Missing Genes In Biological Pathways Of Prokaryotes., Yong Chen, Fenglou Mao, Guojun Li, Ying Xu

College of Science & Mathematics Departmental Research

BACKGROUND: Reconstruction of biological pathways is typically done through mapping well-characterized pathways of model organisms to a target genome, through orthologous gene mapping. A limitation of such pathway-mapping approaches is that the mapped pathway models are constrained by the composition of the template pathways, e.g., some genes in a target pathway may not have corresponding genes in the template pathways, the so-called "missing gene" problem.

METHODS: We present a novel pathway-expansion method for identifying additional genes that are possibly involved in a target pathway after pathway mapping, to fill holes caused by missing genes as well as to expand the …
