Parent/Caregiver Lack Of Knowledge: A Barrier For Youth Swimming Ability?, Timothy D. Ryan, Carol C. Irwin, Joris Drayer, Richard L. Irwin
Parent/Caregiver Lack Of Knowledge: A Barrier For Youth Swimming Ability?, Timothy D. Ryan, Carol C. Irwin, Joris Drayer, Richard L. Irwin
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
This study examined how a parent’s lack of knowledge of potential opportunities and barriers may restrict the child’s opportunity to learn how to swim. A survey was completed in multiple urban areas (N=524), where parents/caregivers reported their child’s swimming ability, as well as the parent’s knowledge of possible barriers to their child’s participation in swimming. ANOVA results suggested that the only significant difference between the presence of barriers groupings for child’s swimming ability were based on the availability of a pool and ease of access. For potential barriers examined, the group who lacked of barriers had a significantly lower perception …

Labor Market Effects Of The World Cup: A Sectoral Analysis, Robert Baumann, Bryan Engelhardt, Victor Matheson
Economics Department Working Papers
This paper provides an empirical examination of impact the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the United States on local employment. In contrast to ex ante economic impact reports that suggest large increases in employment due to the tournament, an ex post examination of employment in 9 host metropolitan areas finds no significant impact on employment from hosting World Cup games. Furthermore, an analysis of employment in specific sectors of the economy finds no impact from hosting games on employment in the leisure and hospitality and professional and business services sectors but a statistically significant negative impact on employment in the …

Fan-Family Conflict : An Examination Of Inter-Role Conflict Between Sport Fan And Family Roles., Jason M. Simmons
Fan-Family Conflict : An Examination Of Inter-Role Conflict Between Sport Fan And Family Roles., Jason M. Simmons
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
An individual's role set consists of a variety of different roles (Biddle, 1979; Madsen & Hammond, 2005). Parent, spouse, student, and even sports fan, all constitute roles within one's role set. Fulfilling role demands requires time, energy, and in some cases, money. These resources are perishable, meaning once they are allocated to satisfying the demands of one role, they may not be used to fulfill the demands of alternative roles (Goode, 1960). Further, the behavioral expectations from one role may contrast with behavior expected in another (Greenhaus & Beutell, 1985). The difficulty one experiences in balancing the demands/pressures of multiple …

The Case Of The Women's United Soccer Association : Explaining The Rise And Fall Of A Social Movement Organization., Meghan O'Connor Mcdonogh
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to examine the creation and demise of the WUSA, and to establish the league as a social movement organization (SMO) within the context of the rich body of social movement literature. In explaining the rise and fall of the WUSA, three research questions were answered: (a) How was the WUSA founded? (b) Why was the WUSA founded? and (c) Why did the WUSA fail? The design used to answer these research questions is a case study design from a historical analysis perspective. Eight in-depth interviews were conducted with WUSA leaders. The interviews were then …
The Relationship Between Superstitious Behaviors Of Sports Fans, Team Identification, Team Location, And Game Outcome, Shana M. Wilson
The Relationship Between Superstitious Behaviors Of Sports Fans, Team Identification, Team Location, And Game Outcome, Shana M. Wilson
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The present study examined how a fan's desire to participate in superstitious behaviors depends on team identification, team location, and game outcome. The study is a 2 (team identification: high vs. low) x 2 (game outcome: close game vs. blowout) x 2 (location of team: local vs. distant) between subjects factorial design. Participants for the current study included 234 students, recruited from undergraduate psychology classes at Western Kentucky University. Participants completed the Sport Spectator Identification Scale, read a randomly assigned vignette differing in team location and game outcome, and filled out the Superstition Questionnaire to measure their desire to complete …

Factors Contributing To Spectators' Perceptions Of A College Football Stadium During Its First Year, Lyle Yoder
Factors Contributing To Spectators' Perceptions Of A College Football Stadium During Its First Year, Lyle Yoder
Research Papers
The objective of the current study was to determine how predetermined factors contribute to a spectator’s overall perceptions of a new college football stadium. It was predicted that fans who were highly identified with the SIU football team would have a more positive perception of the new stadium than low identified fans. Second, individuals’ considering themselves to be sports fans would perceive the stadium more positively compared to those not considering themselves to be sport fans. Third, females’ perceptions would be more positive than males. Lastly, the greater the number of games an individual attends would result in a more …
The Effects Of A Lumbopelvic Hip Complex Conditioning Program On Dynamic Knee Valgus In Female Tennis Players, Katelyn Marie Roling
The Effects Of A Lumbopelvic Hip Complex Conditioning Program On Dynamic Knee Valgus In Female Tennis Players, Katelyn Marie Roling
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Female athletes have a four-to-six times greater risk of sustaining a lower extremity injury than their male counterparts (Hewett, 2000). One explanation for the discrepancy in injury rates is increased dynamic knee valgus angles caused by neuromuscular imbalances of the lumbopelvic hip complex (LPHC). The purpose of this study was to determine if implementing a LPHC conditioning program improved neuromuscular deficiencies. Seven female collegiate tennis players competitive at the NCAA Division I level volunteered for the study (19.7 + .95 years, 167.3 + 7.4 cm, and 60.72 kg + 6.71 kg). The subjects participated in a 16 week LPHC conditioning …

Modern Public Relations Strategies: Revisiting Wheatley & Timmons’ 1994 First Alert Campaign, Victoria Brewton, Ricky Hoffman, Megan Hohenstein, Ryan Myers, Martha Ramette
Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)
Our interest in this subject came after visiting Wheatley & Timmons, a public relations firm headquartered in Chicago, IL. The firm launched an extremely successful public relations campaign for First Alert in 1994. Our public relations class was asked to design an innovative campaign aimed at spreading awareness about carbon monoxide poisoning, acting as though no one had ever heard of it. The facts about deaths related to carbon monoxide are shocking. We had a lot of questions to answer, such as: How much do people really know, what are the most effective techniques for spreading general awareness, and what …
