Undergraduate Research Symposium

This study measured changes in the intercultural competency of undergraduate students in a course, Human Relations in a Multicultural Society. The National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) is encouraging teacher preparation programs to foster and measure culturally responsive teaching. The hypothesis for this study was that the intentional, cross-cultural experiences of students will have an impact on the cultural competency of each student. This course is taught each semester at a Midwestern public university. The study included 70 undergraduate students between 18 and 35 years old who voluntarily enrolled in the course and represented students in academic majors …

Monopsony And Salary Suppression: The Case Of Major League Soccer In The United States, John Twomey, James Monks Apr 2011

Monopsony And Salary Suppression: The Case Of Major League Soccer In The United States, John Twomey, James Monks

Economics Faculty Publications

Top tier professional soccer in the United States is operated by Major League Soccer (MLS). The MLS was established and operates under a single entity structure, such that all players negotiate and sign contracts with the league rather than with individual teams. This monopsonistic structure was designed to eliminate competition for players across teams within the league and thus allow the league to suppress player salaries. This paper investigates how effective the MLS has been in achieving this goal and finds that the MLS devotes only about 25 percent of its revenues to player salaries, compared to 50 to 60 …

Aerobic And Anaerobic Exercise: Associations With Academic Outcomes In College Students, Ryan Enos

Sport Management Undergraduate

Previous studies have found that physical activity is associated with greater academic achievements among students. However, it remains unclear whether associations are present in both aerobic exercise and anaerobic exercise. The purpose of this study was to examine the associations between aerobic exercise, anaerobic exercise and academic outcomes in college students. Data was drawn from a survey administered to undergraduate students attending St. John Fisher College in Rochester, NY. Students were asked to self record the type of exercise they participate in as well as their academic grade point average (GPA). The data collected was measured using two statistical models: …

A Study Of Variables That Effect Attendance At Rochester Rhinos Home Soccer Matches, Jeff Skerritt

Sport Management Undergraduate

During the 2009 and 2010 seasons the Rochester Rhinos soccer club has experienced a downturn in match attendance. The team has been in their new, soccer specific stadium, for the last five seasons. After two seasons of promising attendance, the last three seasons have been about the lowest in the team’s 15-year history. Is the “honeymoon” over already? What drives attendance to Rhinos matches? This study looked at 10 variables that have an effect on attendance. Using attendance data from the 2000 and 2010 seasons, this study ran correlation and regression analysis. After analysis it was found that there was …

“The Teacher Doesn’T Like Me:” Exploring The Relationship Between Teacher Attitudes Toward Student-Athletes And Academic Performance, Latisha Forster Scott

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

More than 7.5 million high school students in the United States participate in organized sport according to a survey conducted by the National Federation of State High School Associations (National Federation of State high School Associations [NFHS], 2010). Athletic participation is the single most popular school-sponsored extracurricular activity, regardless of race, ethnicity, or gender (Miller, Melnick, Barnes, Farrell, & Sabo, 2005; Eccles & Barber, 1999; Eide & Ronan, 2001). With the high popularity of sport participation, the controversy over the effect of athletic participation on academic progress and success continues to linger (Ward, 2008; Marsh, 1993; Miller et al. 2005). …

Etsu Today - Spring 2011, University Marketing And Communication, East Tennessee State University

ETSU Today [magazine]

On Monday, October 2, 1911, 29 students arrived at a place that had been, only a few years earlier, a piece of farmland. They were the first to enroll at East Tennessee State Normal School. Some sought credentials for teaching; others entered the new field of domestic science in the hope of becoming better homemakers. They took a chance, these pioneering 29. Some gave up jobs. Some abandoned chores on the family farm. They were uncertain about what they would find on this campus where cows had once grazed. Its state appropriation for operation and maintenance was under $36,000 for …

Self, Social, Team, And Situational Factors Influencing Televised Sports Viewership, Donghun Lee, James Zhang, Ketra L. Armstrong, Soon Ho Kim

Journal of Applied Marketing Theory

This study examined personal, social, and team motives associated with the consumption of televised sports (CTS) while taking into consideration market constraints variables. Research participants (N = 304) were university students who responded to a questionnaire that consisted of four segments: (a) watching televised sports, (b) motives for watching televised sports, (c) situational constraints, and (d) demographics. Semi-structured interviews as an ad hoc study were conducted with additional 22 frequent viewers of televised sports to ensure inclusion of all relevant factors affecting CTS. Multiple regression analyses revealed that self, team, and social motives were significant factors (p < .05) related to CTS. Two situational factors (weather and ticket availability) were found to have a significant (p < .01) impact on the CTS. Findings from the interviews further revealed that four conceptual themes affected CTS: individual-related factors, team-related factors, event-related factors, and media features.

The Politics Of Subsidizing Sports: Legislative Voting For Three Minnesota Sports Venues, Dave Hitchcock Apr 2011

The Politics Of Subsidizing Sports: Legislative Voting For Three Minnesota Sports Venues, Dave Hitchcock

Political Science Theses and Capstones

Since 1998 the State of Minnesota has funded the building of the Xcel Energy Center, Target Field, and TCF Bank Stadium. The focus of this research is to locate voting trends within the Minnesota House of Representatives towards these venues. I recorded the votes of each member on the legislation approving these venues from the Minnesota Journal of the House and then constructed data sets for all three buildings. From this data, trends emerge potentially linking the voting tendencies of members based on party, gender, and geographical location of their district. Initial analysis supports a fairly strong relationship between district …

Journal of Applied Marketing Theory

For more than a decade, we have appealed to corporations to consider sustainability. Leading companies have enjoyed positive media attention, improved bottom line profits and enhanced competitiveness through environmental management and social initiatives. Sustainability in the broader sense has become everyone’s job, and the momentum crosses age groups and economic strata. This paper focuses on the event organizer as ordinary leader, inspiring an engaged, accessible audience toward sustainability, and offers rationale for promoting socially and environmentally responsible event management. With a captive audience, ordinary leaders have an opportunity to model socially and environmentally responsible practices through effective education, communication, metrics …

Value Of Professional Sport Teams In The Community: Reexamining The Measurement Properties Of The Community Impact Scale, Dae Hyun Kim, James J. Zhang, Yong Jae Ko

Journal of Applied Marketing Theory

The Community Impact Scale was developed by Zhang et al. (1996) to measure essential value dimensions of professional sports in the community. The original scale includes 45 items under eight factors (Community Solidarity, Public Behavior, Social Equity, Pastime Ecstasy, Health Awareness, Individual Quality, Excellence Pursuit, and Business Opportunity). To further ensure its usefulness for theoretical and practical applications, this study re-examined measurement properties of the scale through conducting a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). Research participants (N = 349) were residents of three major metropolitan areas, who responded to a survey in various community settings. With some modifications and eliminations of …

An Analysis Of Ncaa Enforcement And Its Influence On Conference Bowl Revenue: Does The Punishment Fit The Crime From A Financial Perspective?, Mark Joseph Patterson

Human Movement Studies & Special Education Theses & Dissertations

In 2009, $260 million dollars in bowl game revenue was paid out to Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) schools competing in bowl games (BCS, 201 la). This study examined the relationship between the annual revenue each FBS conference receives from their teams' bowl appearance and various factors impacting this revenue. Specifically, this examination identifies what, if any, impact violations and probation have on conference bowl revenue, and the distribution of that revenue to individual institutions.

The majority of research in this area focuses on individual athletic department success and how variables such as attendance, postseason play and winning percentage can be …
