The Power Of Networks: Social Capital And Its Influence In College Student Perceptions Of Sexual Harassment Of Female Sports Reporters, Brittany M. Perotti
The Power Of Networks: Social Capital And Its Influence In College Student Perceptions Of Sexual Harassment Of Female Sports Reporters, Brittany M. Perotti
Master's Theses
For decades, women have sought legal remedy as they tried to break through the metaphorical glass ceiling in a male-dominated workforce. In their efforts to make it to higher positions of power, many endured the subtle taunts and comments, while others struggled with blatant discrimination and environments that clearly did not welcome women (Hardin & Shain, 2005a; 2005b), including their own place of work (Hardin & Whiteside, 2009). In multiple studies, female sports journalists admitted to sexual harassment, but dismissed it as part of the job (Hardin & Shain, 2006; 2005a; 2005b). Public outcry over this phenomenon is minimal, and …

Motivations Of Recreation, Parks, And Tourism Administration Students To Attend Professional Conferences, Nika Jalali
Recreation, Parks, and Tourism Administration
Associations have increasingly been holding professional conferences globally. The California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly), San Luis Obispo Recreation, Parks, and Tourism Administration (RPTA) department offers students the chance to attend various professional conferences annually. The purpose of this study was to assess the motivations of Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo RPTA students to attend professional conferences. Data were collected using a self-administered questionnaire on the Cal Poly campus. The findings from 80 subjects indicated a high interest in attending conferences; the top motivating factors to attend professional conferences were networking with professionals, job opportunities, and the relation of the …

Quality Of Life Plus (Ql+) 2011 Rideable Tour, Daniel J. Pelisek
Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering
Quality of Life Plus (QL+) does important work supporting members of the United States armed forces. Without significant funding, it is unlikely they could continue doing that work. Our goal was to hold a charity bike ride, the 2011 QL+ RideABLE Tour, to help them raise the funds they need. We approached the ride from two different perspectives, event planning and project management, with the hope that the two approaches could work in synergy towards a successful event. The project management approach focused on industrial engineering tools like work breakdown structures (WBS), cost analysis, and risk assessment. The goal was …

Augmented Reality: An Overview And Five Directions For Ar In Education, Steve Chi-Yin Yuen, Gallayanee Yaoyuneyong, Erik Johnson
Journal of Educational Technology Development and Exchange (JETDE)
Augmented Reality (AR) is an emerging form of experience in which the Real World (RW) is enhanced by computer-generated content tied to specific locations and/or activities. Over the last several years, AR applications have become portable and widely available on mobile devices. AR is becoming visible in our audio-visual media (e.g., news, entertainment, sports) and is beginning to enter other aspects of our lives (e.g., e-commerce, travel, marketing) in tangible and exciting ways. Facilitating ubiquitous learning, AR will give learners instant access to location-specific information compiled and provided by numerous sources (2009). Both the 2010 and 2011 Horizon Reports predict …

Title Ix Compliance: A Comparison Of Coastal Carolina University To Other Regional Universities, Bailey Devon Howard
Title Ix Compliance: A Comparison Of Coastal Carolina University To Other Regional Universities, Bailey Devon Howard
Honors Theses
Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 and its subsequent interpretations have created legal ground for gender equity in collegiate athletics departments. After 38 years of its existence, however, there are still fewer opportunities for women to be involved in athletics at the collegiate level at NCAA universities. While there are some general characteristics that appear to predispose universities to have lower compliance levels, little research has been done on institution-specific compliance. This study seeks to illustrate Title IX compliance levels of the Big South Conference and South Carolina Division I universities, using Coastal Carolina University as the focal …
The Effectiveness Of Random Drug Testing Of School Athletes, Kelly Cann
The Effectiveness Of Random Drug Testing Of School Athletes, Kelly Cann
Honors Theses
Proponents of drug testing would most likely argue that random drug testing could have saved the lives of Len Bias and Taylor Hooton. Those against random drug testing might respond that this testing could be an avenue used to save lives, but before that can happen, a lot more work would need to be done to change the way the current system operates (or fails to operate) in order to make drug testing fair, effective and efficient.

A Research Framework For Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Implementations Of Social Media In Higher Education, Abbas Foroughi
Online Journal for Workforce Education and Development
Following the lead of today’s hi-tech businesses and industries, many college campuses have begun using Web.2.0 social media technologies like Facebook, blogs, Twitter, and YouTube to facilitate information sharing and collaboration among administrators, faculty, and students. An examination of research on campus social media initiatives revealed that universities are beginning to provide support and infrastructure to support social media initiatives, and that social media tools are being used as part of course content and delivery, where students can use them for collaboration and group decision making on real-world projects. However, much of the research to date was found to be …
