“Getting Noticed”: Middle Childhood Incross-Cultural Perspective, David F. Lancy, M. Annette Grove Jan 2011

“Getting Noticed”: Middle Childhood Incross-Cultural Perspective, David F. Lancy, M. Annette Grove

Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications

Although rarely named, the majority of societies in the ethnographic record demarcate a period between early childhood and adolescence. Prominent signs of demarcation are: for the first time, pronounced gender separation in fact and in role definition; increased freedom of movement for boys while girls may be bound more tightly to their mothers; and heightened expectations for socially responsible behavior. But, above all, middle childhood is about coming out of the shadows of community life and assuming a distinct, lifetime character. Naming and other rites of passage sometimes acknowledge this transition, but it is, reliably, marked by the assumption or …

Seeing The Forest For The Trees: Managing Social Conflict And Forest Restoration, Steven E. Daniels, Jens Emborg, Greg B. Walker Jan 2011

Seeing The Forest For The Trees: Managing Social Conflict And Forest Restoration, Steven E. Daniels, Jens Emborg, Greg B. Walker

Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications

This paper examines the role that social conflict is likely to play in forest restoration projects. A definition of conflict as “perceived goal interference among interdependent parties” serves as a point of departure for the discussion, and the nature of forest restoration conflict is systematically examined by focusing on each aspect of the definition: perceptions, goal interference, the parties, and their interdependence. Agencies undertaking restoration projects are encouraged to adopt a discourse orientation, wherein they recognize that 1) their public involvement efforts are creating a discourse that can incorporate a wide array of values and voices and 2) groups may …

Religion, Forced Migration And Schooling: Varying Influences Of Religious Capital Among Iraqi Christian Refugee Students In Jordan And The Usa, Bruce A. Collet

School of Educational Foundations, Leadership and Policy Faculty Publications

This study is based on focus groups conducted with Christian Iraqi refugee secondary school students in the metropolitan Detroit area, and interviews with staff from volunteer aide agencies, non-governmental organizations, churches, and independent researchers in both Amman, Jordan as well as the Detroit metropolitan area. The article examines varying influences of religious capital among Iraqi Christian students. Examination of the operation of this capital within the context of the two countries’ economic and foreign policy interests including their refugee policies exposes macro-level forces that render religious capital to function in countervailing manners. Iraqi Christian students in both Amman and Detroit …

Does Religiosity Deter Juvenile Delinquency?, Brittany N. Murray Jan 2011

Does Religiosity Deter Juvenile Delinquency?, Brittany N. Murray

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The study presented here uses data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health Wave I (Add Health) to examine the association between juvenile delinquency and religiosity. Juvenile delinquency is an area that has received increasing research interest over the last decade; however, much of this research has primarily focused on family, peers, and education as factors that may reduce delinquent involvement. While all of these are influential in the lives of youth, it is possible there are other factors as well. Religiosity has been shown to have influential effects throughout the life course; however, little research has focused specifically …

‘Contextualizing And Critiquing The Fantastic Prosumer: Power, Alienation And Hegemony’, Edward Comor Jan 2011

‘Contextualizing And Critiquing The Fantastic Prosumer: Power, Alienation And Hegemony’, Edward Comor

FIMS Publications

Abstract The ‘prosumer’ has emerged to become a central figure in contemporary culture. Through the melding of production with consumption, both mainstream and progressive analysts conceptualize prosumption to be a liberating, empowering and, for some, a prospectively revolutionary institution. In this article, these fantastic associations are critically assessed using an approach that situates prosumption activities, including contemporary online applications often referred to as ‘cocreation’, in three social-historical contexts: capitalism as a political economy dominated by mediated abstractions; capitalist society as a hierarchical order; and alienation as a pervasive norm. Among other conclusions, we find that prosumption (particularly its Web 2.0 …

Illuminating The Lived Experiences Of Research With Indigenous Communities, Catherine E. Burnette, Sara Sanders, Howard K. Butcher, Emily Matt Salois Jan 2011

Illuminating The Lived Experiences Of Research With Indigenous Communities, Catherine E. Burnette, Sara Sanders, Howard K. Butcher, Emily Matt Salois

Aboriginal Policy Research Consortium International (APRCi)

The historical exploitation experienced by indigenous people in the United States has left a number of negative legacies, including dis- trust toward research. This distrust poses a barrier to progress made through culturally sensitive research. Given the complex history of research with indigenous groups, the purpose of this descriptive phenomenological study was to illuminate the lived experiences of both indigenous and non-indigenous researchers conducting cul- turally competent research with indigenous people. Interviews from 13 social science research experts revealed 6 underlying themes about their research with indigenous people, including respect and commitment, mutual trust, affirmation, harmony among multiple worldviews, responsibility, …

Stigmatization As A Social Control Mechanism For Persons Living With Hiv And Aids, Judy E. Mill, Nancy Edwards, Randy C. Jackson, Lynne Maclean, Jean Chaw-Kant Jan 2011

Stigmatization As A Social Control Mechanism For Persons Living With Hiv And Aids, Judy E. Mill, Nancy Edwards, Randy C. Jackson, Lynne Maclean, Jean Chaw-Kant

Aboriginal Policy Research Consortium International (APRCi)

Stigmatization contributes to inequity by marginalizing persons living with HIV and AIDS (PHAs). In this study we examined the stigmatizing practices in health care settings from the perspectives of PHAs and health care providers (HCPs). A qualitative design, using a participatory action research approach, was used. Interviews and focus groups were completed with 16 aboriginal and 17 nonaboriginal individuals living with HIV (APHAs and PHAs) and 27 HCPs in Ottawa and Edmonton, Canada. We present findings to support the premise that stigmatization can be used as a social control mechanism with PHAs. Participants described both active and passive social control …

Class Differences In Self-Rated Health: An International Comparison, Kayla Lynn Baumgartner Jan 2011

Class Differences In Self-Rated Health: An International Comparison, Kayla Lynn Baumgartner

Digitized Theses

This paper analyzes the extent to which social class influences perceptions of health among Canadians and Americans. Self-rated health (SRH) is a valid predictor of morbidity and mortality, but what is not known is whether there are social class differences in the overlap between more objective indicators of health, such as the presence of disease or activity limitations, and subjective reports such as SRH. In this analysis I use the Joint Canada/United States Survey of health to assess whether, within categories of SRH, lower class individuals fare worse on objective health indicators than upper class individuals. I use cross-tabular analysis …

Female FlâNerie Between Modernity And Postmodernity. The Cases Of Dorothy Richardson’S Pilgrimage And RéGine Robin’S MéGapolis. Les Derniers Pas Du FlâNeur, Maria Roxana Baiceanu

Digitized Theses

The late 1980s and early 1990s saw a revival of critical debates around, on the one hand, Walter Benjamin’s understanding offlânerie, the practice of street walking in the nineteenth-century metropolis, and on the other hand the existence of a female counterpart for the (usually male)flâneur. Most of the analyses, coming from Janet Wolff, Elizabeth Wilson, Susan Buck-Morss, and Anne Friedberg, but also the contributors to Keith Tester’s critical anthology The Flâneur (1994) returned to Baudelairian and Benjaminian depictions offlânerie and revealed ways in which the practice and its participants (male and female alike) were still significant for understanding a highly …

Mirrored Reflections On Femininity: An Autoethnography In Track And Field, Basketball, And Figure Skating, Shellie I. Mcparland

Digitized Theses

This thesis is a collection of embodied writing through autoethnography in track and field, basketball, and figure skating. Throughout each integrated article I examine different forms of femininity in women’s sport and portray them from the angle of my own experience through flashbacks, storied writing, poetic representation, and evocative writing. The lenses through which female athletes are viewed, and often gazed at, are discussed by way of media portrayals and attitudes, the use of sexist language, sport and gender stereotypes, the sexualization of female athletes, feminization though socialization, past medical views regarding women, and women’s sport involvement in the past. …

The Look Of Math, Matthew James Teigen Jan 2011

The Look Of Math, Matthew James Teigen

Digitized Theses

If consideration is given to math’s look when it is written out, math can be experienced visually without working with or understanding its logical content. This “meaningless math” then becomes a vessel into which new contextual meaning is injected by a given observer. “The look of math” is a part of ethnomathematics, or the culture of mathematics, which necessarily and anti-Platonically (i.e., taking math to be purely a human endeavor) contains mathematics per se. Formal elements in math-as-art can be categorized as algebraic, geometric, diagrammatic, or organic. The main idea is not “math can be art,” but rather that math …

Moving House: Urban Aboriginal Housing In Canada, Laura Murphy Jan 2011

Moving House: Urban Aboriginal Housing In Canada, Laura Murphy

Digitized Theses

Existing research shows that Aboriginal people in Canada have higher rates of mobility than the rest of the population. Mobility, along with rentalship have been linked to housing insecurity. Using the 2006 Canadian Census Data, descriptive statistics and regression analyses were run to investigate the differences in urban housing insecurity between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people in Canada. To look at urban housing insecurity, rentalship was used as a proxy as those who rent in Canada are more vulnerable to housing instability than those who own. Urban Aboriginal people were found to be more susceptible to housing insecurity than Non-Aboriginal people. …

Toward A Sustainable Marketplace: Expanding Options And Benefits For Consumers, Michael Luchs, Rebecca Walker Naylor, Randall L. Rose, Jesse R. Catlin, Roland Gau, Sommer Kapitan, Jenny Mish, Lucie Ozanne, Marcus Phipps, Bonnie Simpson, Saroja Subrahmanyan, Todd Weaver Jan 2011

Toward A Sustainable Marketplace: Expanding Options And Benefits For Consumers, Michael Luchs, Rebecca Walker Naylor, Randall L. Rose, Jesse R. Catlin, Roland Gau, Sommer Kapitan, Jenny Mish, Lucie Ozanne, Marcus Phipps, Bonnie Simpson, Saroja Subrahmanyan, Todd Weaver

Management and Organizational Studies Publications

While popular interest in sustainable consumption continues to grow, there is a persistent gap between consumers’ typically positive explicit attitudes towards sustainability and their actual consumption behaviours. This gap can be explained, in part, by the belief that choosing to consume sustainably is both constraining and reduces individual-level benefits. While the belief that sustainable consumption depends on making trade-offs is true in some contexts, increasingly consumers are finding that more sustainable forms of consumption can provide both an expanded set of options and additional, individual-level benefits. In this essay, we discuss and illustrate an expanded set of options and benefits …

Bridging The “Excluded Middle”: The Case Of Brazilian Evangelical Missionaries Serving Among Arab-Muslims, Edward L. Smither Jan 2011

Bridging The “Excluded Middle”: The Case Of Brazilian Evangelical Missionaries Serving Among Arab-Muslims, Edward L. Smither

Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary (1973-2015)

Since Paul Hiebert first challenged missiological reflection with his notion of the “excluded middle,” missiologists and practitioners from the West have been forced to face the deficiencies of a rationalistic worldview; especially when serving in animistic contexts. Hiebert, Bill Musk, Rick Love, and others have further asserted that Western missionaries serving among Folk Muslims need to be better equipped to minister to the felt needs of their host peoples. While the literature and evidence of missionary practice suggest that North Americans and Europeans are working hard to climb “learning curve” dealing with this worldview. Missionaries from Brazil serving among Arab-Muslims …

"Pieces In A Pattern": Virginia Woolf And Family Memory, Kirsten Marie Thoming Jan 2011

"Pieces In A Pattern": Virginia Woolf And Family Memory, Kirsten Marie Thoming

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

By examining two memoirs written by Virginia Woolf and one memoir written by her father, Leslie Stephen, along with Woolf's novel, To the Lighthouse, I will investigate the memoir genre, particularly in the context of understanding a shared history. These four texts provide a means of analyzing how texts form a discourse and what can be learned when conversational roles are determined. By grouping these four works together, one can better understand the rich genre of memoir, while also getting a glimpse of the powerful complexity and narrative intricacies of the Woolf/Stephen family conversation.
