"Because She's My Mom" : An Exploratory Study Of Adult Lesbian Women's Understanding And Management Of Relationships With Mothers Who Reject Their Sexuality, Ana Elisa Echevarria Sep 2011

"Because She's My Mom" : An Exploratory Study Of Adult Lesbian Women's Understanding And Management Of Relationships With Mothers Who Reject Their Sexuality, Ana Elisa Echevarria

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This study explored the ways in which lesbian adult women, who have been rejected by their mothers because of their sexuality and maintain relationships with them, understand and manage those relationships as well as their motivation for maintaining the relationships. Since limited research has focused on adult lesbian women who have maintained a relationship with a mother who rejects their sexuality, a qualitative, exploratory study was chosen as an appropriate research design. This qualitative study used a flexible interview format comprised of semistructured, open-ended questions presented to 13 self-identified adult lesbian women who had been out to their mothers for …

Analysis Of The Community Based Planning Process In Holmes Lake Watershed, Lincoln, Nebraska, Courtney Quinn, Mark E. Burbach, Lois Wright Morton Sep 2011

Analysis Of The Community Based Planning Process In Holmes Lake Watershed, Lincoln, Nebraska, Courtney Quinn, Mark E. Burbach, Lois Wright Morton

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

In 1998, the Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality (NDEQ) listed Holmes Lake, in Lincoln, NE on the Clean Water Act, Section 303(d) list of impaired and threatened waters. Holmes Lake was listed as impaired due to aquatic life use impairments.

Experts from various agencies worked together to form a Technical Advisory Committee to work closely with a Watershed Advisory Council of local citizens and stakeholders. Technical experts explained the water impairments and possible remedies to citizens. The Watershed Advisory Council then helped to prioritize actions. The lake was drained in 2003. In 2004, sediment was excavated, the shoreline was stabilized, …

Immigration To Germany: Past And Present Experiences, Peter O'Brien Sep 2011

Immigration To Germany: Past And Present Experiences, Peter O'Brien

Political Science Faculty Research

Germany long stood as the epitome of the ethno-nationalist approach to immigration. However, passage of the new Citizenship Law in 2000, which introduced jus soli, seemed to signal a sea change in the direction of a postnational outlook. This paper warns against seeing in the new legislation an emerging normative consensus around the kind of liberal cosmopolitanism advocated by the likes of Jürgen Habermas, Ulrich Beck or Will Kymlicka. I document the persistent allure and influence of nationalism and point to the growing appeal and sway of proposals and policies informed by a postmodern normative outlook. Germany’s normative landscape, …

Inspiring Change: The Roles Of Women And Their Communities, Singapore Management University

Perspectives@SMU

'Change' is a word often employed (and frequently abused) by politicians, industrialists, artists and leaders of various domains as a rallying call. Its effects can be profound on those discontented with the status quo and perhaps uninviting for those already contented with the way things are.

Perceived Community Cohesion And The Stress Process In Youth, Karen T. Van Gundy, Nena F. Stracuzzi, Cesar J. Rebellon, Corinna Jenkins Tucker, Ellen S. Cohn Sep 2011

Perceived Community Cohesion And The Stress Process In Youth, Karen T. Van Gundy, Nena F. Stracuzzi, Cesar J. Rebellon, Corinna Jenkins Tucker, Ellen S. Cohn

Psychology

Using survey data from two youth samples, one rural and one urban, we examine the role and significance of perceived community cohesion in the stress process. In particular, we assess the extent to which community attachment and detachment are related to depressed mood, problem substance use, and delinquency net of social statuses, stress exposure, and personal attributes. In addition, we explore the degree to which those dimensions of community cohesion explain or condition the links between the above stress-process components (e.g., social statuses, stress exposure, and personal attributes) and well-being. We find remarkably similar results across samples: community attachment is …

Getting Noticed: Middle Childhood In Cross-Cultural Perspective, David F. Lancy, M. Annette Grove Sep 2011

Getting Noticed: Middle Childhood In Cross-Cultural Perspective, David F. Lancy, M. Annette Grove

Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications

Although rarely named, the majority of societies in the ethnographic record demarcate a period between early childhood and adolescence. Prominent signs of demarcation are: for the first time, pronounced gender separation in fact and in role definition; increased freedom of movement for boys while girls may be bound more tightly to their mothers; and heightened expectations for socially responsible behavior. But, above all, middle childhood is about coming out of the shadows of community life and assuming a distinct, lifetime character. Naming and other rites of passage sometimes acknowledge this transition, but it is, reliably, marked by the assumption or …

“What About Boys?” The Sexual Exploitation Of Boys And Young Men In Asia, Glenn Miles, Heather Blanch, Jasmir Thakur Sep 2011

“What About Boys?” The Sexual Exploitation Of Boys And Young Men In Asia, Glenn Miles, Heather Blanch, Jasmir Thakur

Annual Interdisciplinary Conference on Human Trafficking: 3rd (2011)

Sexual exploitation of boys and young men continues to be an invisible problem with inadequate research to determine the prevalence and outcomes. Where research has been done then the focus has primarily on HIV prevalence and other risk factors including violence is not adequately considered. Why is this? This research looks at two locations in Mumbai, India and Phnom Penh, Cambodia where some base line data has been obtained. Around 50 boys in Phnom Penh and 102 boys in Mumbai were interviewed. The results demonstrate a level of vulnerability that dispels the myth that sexual exploitation of boys is vastly …

The Importance Of Region And State Welfare Rules For Disconnected Single Mothers, Andrea Hetling Sep 2011

The Importance Of Region And State Welfare Rules For Disconnected Single Mothers, Andrea Hetling

University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research Discussion Paper Series

The proportion of low-income, single mothers not receiving public assistance or participating in the formal employment sector has approximately doubled over the past decade. Many of the currently debated policy options to support these families focus on state level programs. However, little is known about the relationships between state welfare program characteristics and disconnectedness. This project assesses the effect of state welfare rules on the likelihood of being disconnected from these two income sources. Using data from the Survey of Income and Program Participation and the Urban Institute‟s Welfare Rules Database, the current research compares the circumstances of these at-risk …

Recent Developments In Antipoverty Policies In The United States, James P. Ziliak Sep 2011

Recent Developments In Antipoverty Policies In The United States, James P. Ziliak

University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research Discussion Paper Series

I survey recent developments in antipoverty policy in the United States over the past decade and examine how the safety net and tax system affects poverty and its correlates using data from the 2000 to 2010 waves of the Current Population Survey-Annual Social and Economic Supplement. Unlike the 1980s and 1990s, and until the health care overhaul in 2009, the first decade of the 21st Century was relatively tepid in terms of major transfer policy reforms. However, real spending on most major social program increased significantly, and in some cases doubled or tripled, in response to demographic shifts and the …
