A Coaching-Based Framework For Individual Consultations, Deandra Little, Michael S. Palmer
A Coaching-Based Framework For Individual Consultations, Deandra Little, Michael S. Palmer
To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development
Educational developers committed to promoting effective teaching and learning practices often make the same mistake we advise instructors to avoid: privileging content over process in individual consultations. We describe a process-oriented consultation model based on effective practices from the literature on individual consultations, coaching, learning, and motivation. Using this three-step model, educational developers can systematically create a collaborative environment that is nonjudgmental and nonprescriptive and draws on the client’s capabilities, experiences, aspirations, and resourcefulness.
Ready Or Not? An International Study Of The Preparation Of Educational Developers, Nancy Van Note Chism
Ready Or Not? An International Study Of The Preparation Of Educational Developers, Nancy Van Note Chism
To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development
This report of an international survey of educational developers describes their entry-level background knowledge and skills for the work of educational development, how they obtained them, and their recommendations on helping prepare new entrants to the profession. Respondents reported that their experiences rendered them moderately prepared for some tasks and less prepared for others, notably consultation. The results can inform increased professionalization of educational development through more systematic preparation of future educational developers.
Academic Dishonesty Among International Students In Higher Education, Krishna K. Bista
Academic Dishonesty Among International Students In Higher Education, Krishna K. Bista
To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development
University instructors address and want to eschew student academic misconduct. These educators presume that students understand fully what cheating and plagiarism are. However, the issue of academic dis-honesty among international students is complex and difficult. This study investigated the perceptions of international undergraduate and graduate students in a southern U.S. university about possible causes for academic misbehavior. Results reveal several causal variables: previous learning style, English language proficiency, unfamiliarity with American academic cultures, relationship between student and teacher, and availability of technical and educational resources associated with academic dishonesty.

The Study Of The Prevalence Of Desnos Symptoms In Traumatized Children, Margot Jagodzinski
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
This qualitative study is grounded in the diagnosis of Disorders of Extreme Stress - Not Otherwise Specified (DESNOS). This diagnosis is under review to appear as a subcategory of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in the upcoming DSM-V. This study evaluates DESNOS symptoms exhibited in children who have experienced interpersonal traumatic events, specifically domestic violence or sexual abuse. Outcomes suggest that children indeed display characteristics of DESNOS soon after an interpersonal trauma. The findings suggest a need for more research on techniques and treatments that can be used to help children exhibiting symptoms of DESNOS.
A Salutogenic Framework To Understand Disparity In Breast Cancer Screening Behavior In African American Women, Regina Conway-Phillips
A Salutogenic Framework To Understand Disparity In Breast Cancer Screening Behavior In African American Women, Regina Conway-Phillips
Dissertations
African American women (AAW) have the highest breast cancer mortality rate than any other racial or ethnic group. Limited access to care reduces mammography screening for AAW. Despite barriers, some AAW engage in breast cancer screening (BCS) behaviors like mammography. The salutogenic theory of health focuses on positive health behaviors and offers a framework to understand personal factors which allow some AAW to overcome adversity and engage in BCS. Sense of coherence (SOC) is central to salutogenic theory. Individuals with greater SOC utilize available resources to attain optimal health. This study: 1) Evaluated the contribution of SOC, social support and …
Sibling Suicide In Indo-American Families: Acculturation, Acculturative Stress, And Family Relationships, Suresh Unni
Sibling Suicide In Indo-American Families: Acculturation, Acculturative Stress, And Family Relationships, Suresh Unni
Dissertations
This study investigated suicide in Indo-American families. Relationships between acculturation, acculturative stress, and family relationships in completed suicides of Indo-American youth were examined. Snowball sampling procedures were used to find six adult sibling survivors of suicide as participants. Semi-structured, in-depth interviews were conducted by the researcher. Grounded theory strategies were used to analyze data and generate theory. Analysis of results yielded both protective and risk factors for suicide. Acculturation risk factors resulted from homogeneous populations lacking in diversity while protective factors were progressive and integrated neighborhood and schools. Integration was the preferred mode of acculturation by participants and suicide victims. …

Reflecting Together About Tenure And Promotion: A Faculty Learning Community Approach, Leslie G. Mcbride, Janelle Decarrico Voegele
To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development
What happens when faculty representing various disciplines and career stages reflect together on the tenure and promotion process? How does the learning community they form facilitate development of their academic portfolios, and what insights into various forms of scholarship does it provide? This chapter addresses these questions. It describes the learning community over a five-month period, explains how academic portfolio development was used as a common reference point for addressing tenure and promotion issues, and summarizes insights and perspectives shared among faculty members as they tried to understand the value of diverse forms of scholarship.

Evaluating Changes In Families With Members On Military Deployment, Jill Brink
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
With ongoing operations in the Middle East, military families face a large amount of stress surrounding deployment. While many studies have been conducted on soldier mental health, few have been published on the health of their families and even less on their children. The present case studies examine the mental health of military children, the change in family environment, and the social supports dependent spouses use during deployment. Two families are presented in this study. One family represents an Army Reserve family and the other an Air Force family. By comparing scores to standardized scores, it was shown that mental …

Acculturative Stress And Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Among Latino And Asian Immigrants, Yajaira Villeda
Social Work Theses - Archive
Mental health needs for immigrants are complicated by previous trauma and living in a new country. This study examined acculturative stress (AS) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among immigrants by conducting a secondary data analysis of the 2002 to 2003 National Latino American and Asian American Study (N=3,259). The primary acculturative stressors identified were limited contact with family and friends, difficulties interacting with others due to language limitations and not receiving the same respect as in the country of origin. Latinos experienced more acculturative stress than Asians. Measures of sex, age, race, education, age of immigration, length of stay in …

Utilizing Probabilistic Reinforcement To Enhance Participation In Parent Training, Errity Jones
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Parental participation in parent training programs is necessary for success in behavioral parent training. Prior literature has demonstrated probabilistic reinforcement as an effective intervention for improving a wide variety of behaviors. In the present study, a probabilistic reinforcement program (i.e., lottery) was implemented in order to evaluate its efficacy as part of a behavioral parent training program. The behaviors targeted for increase included attendance, participation, homework completion, and performing role-plays or completing in-class assignments for two 10 week Tools for Positive Behavior Change courses. Participants earned lottery tickets for each of the dependent measures, and drawings took place at the …

Psychology Faculty Scholarship
Little is known about African American families’ experiences with mental health services. A purposive sample of 40 dyads of African American youth (aged 13 to 19) and their mothers participated in a cross-sectional qualitative research design using semi-structured interviews that elicited information about their past experiences and satisfaction with mental health services. Though rarely received, group and family therapy were perceived favorably. However, both mothers and youth reported dissatisfaction centered on medication and lack of professionalism, confidentiality, and concern by providers. The failure of mental health services providers to meet basic standards of quality and professionalism may explain the low …

Secondary data was obtained from program staff as well as a review of the survey evaluation process …
The Male Neonatal Circumcision Debate: Social Movements,Sexual Citizenship, And Human Rights, Lauren M. Sardi
The Male Neonatal Circumcision Debate: Social Movements,Sexual Citizenship, And Human Rights, Lauren M. Sardi
Societies Without Borders
Male circumcision is known to be one of the oldest and perhaps one of the most controversial body modification procedures in the history of humanity (Darby 2005; Gollaher 1994, 2000; Grimes 1980). Such scholars and activists, especially those who self-identify as being against the routinized procedure of male neonatal circumcision, discuss circumcision as a human rights violation. However, what is notable about the anti-circumcision movement more broadly is how they implement a Western notion of human rights in which there are contradictions between the rights of children versus the concept of cultural rights, which are both religious and secular in …
