Straight Talk From Recent Grads: Grant Writing Tips For New Investigators, Joelle Powers, Danielle Swick
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)
There is an increasing demand and critical importance for those in academic positions to be conducting high quality research in addition to teaching well and successfully obtaining grants is often necessary to fund such scientific inquiry (Shaw, 2002). Faculty members in academic or research positions are likely to be among those spending the most time on such efforts as successful grant writing to support both research and scholarly productivity is compulsory for flourishing in these jobs (Hasche, Perron & Proctor, 2009). In fact, most job announcements in the Chronicle of Higher Education list the ability to acquire external funding as …

Sulfate And Phosphate Speleothems At Jenolan Caves, New South Wales, Australia, Ross E. Pogson, R. Armstrong L. Osborne, David M. Colchester
KIP Articles
Sulfate and phosphate deposits at Jenolan Caves occur in a va- riety of forms and compositions including crusts, ‘flowers’ and fibrous masses of gypsum (selenite), and clusters of boss-like speleothems (potatoes) of ardealite (calcium sulphate, phos- phate hydrate) with associated gypsum. This boss-like mor- phology of ardealite does not appear to have been previously described in the literature and this is the first report of ardealite in New South Wales. Gypsum var. selenite occurs in close association with pyrite-bearing palaeokarst, while the ardealite gypsum association appears to relate to deposits of mineralised bat guano. Isotope studies confirm that the two …

Meeting The Clinical Education Needs Of Community-Based Preceptors: An Environmental Scan To Identify Format And Content For A New Web-Based Resource, Rosemin Kassam, Elizabeth Macleod, John Collins, Glymnis Tidball, Donna Dryan, Lois Neufeld, Mona Kwong
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
This study gathered world-wide information about web-based clinical teaching resources, identified gaps in these resources, and analyzed preceptor clinical education needs as first steps in creating a series of web-based clinical education modules. In addition to an environmental scan of web-based resources, a needs assessment survey was created, distributed, and analyzed. Participants in the survey, representing ten healthcare professions throughout British Columbia, Canada, identified the content that would be most relevant to them and the optimal length of web-based modules. The study identified 15 web-based clinical education topics common across four English-speaking countries and linked them to 31 province-wide learning …

Change In Cultural Competency Among Students During An Intentional Human Relations Experience, Camille Mcnabb, Samantha Tupy
Education Presentations at National and International Conferences
This study measured changes in the intercultural competency of undergraduate students in a course, Human Relations in a Multicultural Society. The National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) is encouraging teacher preparation programs to foster and measure culturally responsive teaching (2010). The hypothesis for this study was that the intentional, cross-cultural experiences of students will have an impact on the cultural competency of each student. This course is taught each semester at a Midwestern public university. The study included 70 undergraduate students between 18 and 35 years old who voluntarily enrolled in the course and represented students in academic …

The Effects Of School Climate Change On Student Success In A Fifth And Sixth Grade School, Kim M. Harris
Dissertations
The significance of the study was to examine intentional strategies to improve school climate relative to student school success as measured by academic achievement, attendance, and student behavior. It was important to understand how student school success was affected by factors related to school climate improvement such as leadership and change processes, initiatives to improve student sense of safety and connectedness, and factors such as time, relationships, grade span, and alignment in academic focus. Understanding how school climate could promote student school success was significant in this study, as was an understanding of the differences between school culture and climate …

The National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) was founded in 1954 to serve as an independent body in promoting high quality teacher preparation programs (NCATE 2008). Its mission is to ensure accredited institutions produce high quality educators, administrators, and specialists able to meet the needs of all learners. Institutions seeking NCATE accreditation must address six standards NCATE identified as essential to producing quality educators: (1) Candidate knowledge, skills and professional dispositions; (2) Assessment system and unit evaluation; (3) Field experiences and clinical practice; (4) Diversity; (5) Faculty qualifications, performance, and development; and (6) Unit governance and resources. Every Parent’S Worst Nightmare: Myths Of Child Abductions In Us News, Spring-Serenity Duvall, Leigh Moscowitz
Faculty Publications
Through a content analysis, this study seeks to uncover the predominant narrative themes centered on gender and class that shaped mainstream U.S. newspaper coverage of child kidnappings from 2000-2003. The abductions that dominated news coverage were neither random nor representative cases; clear patterns emerged in the kidnappings that garnered the most media attention. Though statistically rare, the news media disproportionally covered stories of young Caucasian girls being snatched from their middle-to-upper class homes by male strangers, manufacturing a nationwide epidemic. Our analysis reveals how gender and class were used to construct vulnerable girl victims and predatory male perpetrators. News narratives …

Seventy Times Seven: Forgiveness As A Moderator In The Relationship Between Anger And Violent Crime, Elisabeth Marie Spratto
Seventy Times Seven: Forgiveness As A Moderator In The Relationship Between Anger And Violent Crime, Elisabeth Marie Spratto
Senior Honors Theses
Forgiveness is an important quality for the maintenance of successful relationships, and it also has physical and emotional benefits. In contrast, anger, while sometimes positive, can also lead to aggressive or violent behavior, particularly when combined with a desire for revenge. Anger has been repeatedly shown to play a significant role in the commission of crimes; what is less clear is the role forgiveness can play in that relationship. Given that forgiveness has been shown to play a role in anger dissipation, it is logical to suppose that its contribution may be considerable. This study investigated whether forgiveness played a …

The Task Force for John Jay Online convened over a five month period between the end of September 2010 and the end of February 2011 to develop a multi‐year plan to expand online offerings at John Jay College. By building on the earlier, comprehensive effort of the Task Force for Distance Learning Policy and Practice, which issued its final report in August 2007, and on the experience of the MPA‐IG program, which recently completed its first year and issued an assessment report in the fall 2010, the task force aimed to contribute to the College’s history …
“So I Just Took Over”: African American Daughters Caregiving For Parents With Heart Failure, Nancy Thornton, Faith Pratt Hopp
“So I Just Took Over”: African American Daughters Caregiving For Parents With Heart Failure, Nancy Thornton, Faith Pratt Hopp
Social Work Faculty Publications
This article examines the experiences of African American women who are caring for a parent with heart failure. Seven adult daughter caregivers completed in-depth, qualitative interviews, and a phenomenological approach was used for data analysis. Results suggest the presence of caregiving stressors, including heart failure symptoms and comorbidity, caregiving duties, social–emotional stressors, and distrust of the health system. Relevant coping strategies included valuing the caregiving role, coordinating care with siblings, taking charge, and spirituality. Social workers can play a critical role in supporting and advocating for caregivers of persons with heart failure, helping them to cope with stressors associated with …

Psychology: Faculty Publications
This study reports on the development and initial psychometric properties of the Children's Saving Inventory (CSI), a parent-rated measure designed to assess child hoarding behaviors. Subjects included 123 children and adolescents diagnosed with primary Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and their parents. Trained clinicians administered the Children's Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale (CY-BOCS), items assessing Family Accommodation and the Clinical Global Impressions-Severity index. Parents completed the CSI, Child Obsessive-Compulsive Impact Scale (COIS)-Parent Version and Child Behavior Checklist. Youth completed the COIS-Child Version, Obsessive-Compulsive Inventory Child Version (OCI-CV), Multidimensional Anxiety Scale for Children, and Children's Depression Inventory-Short Form. A four factor solution was identified; factors …
