Bullying At The Middle School Level: A Descriptive Study, Sara C. Johnson

Social Work Theses

Bullying within schools has been a topic of great interest in recent years. Due to various factors, bullying is a particularly large problem at middle schools. In order to obtain further research on this topic, a study was conducted at a small suburban middle school in Connecticut. Teachers were given surveys to complete to address their thoughts on bullying. Additionally, a smaller subsample of teachers and the school social worker were interviewed. The data gathered from the surveys and interviews revealed that bullying was in fact present at the school. Participants expressed that students tend to bully one another in …

Surviving As A Runaway: Services For This Population, Noelia Sanchez

Theses Digitization Project

There are thousands of children who run away from their homes each year for a variety of reasons. These children involved themselves in risky behaviors to survive while on the streets. This has been an ongoing problem that many have tried to alleviate by providing- different types of resources throughout the United States. However, there is more that could be done to help our youth stay safe. This population should be of great concern to society because they are part of the future.

This study looked into what runaways have to do to survive while on the streets by interviewing …

Director's Letter, Sarah Chinn Apr 2011

Director's Letter, Sarah Chinn

Center for LGBTQ Studies (CLAGS)

As I write this, the snow is slowly melting: the residue of the blizzard that brought 2010 to a close (and ground the East Coast to an almost complete halt). The stillness of the air outside fosters a kind of meditativeness, although it's hard to get a firm grasp on the events of the past few weeks. After what seemed like an endless parade of false starts, Congress finally overturned Don't Ask, Don't Tell, a policy that came into being at the same time as our newest crop of undergraduates. And at almost the same moment, the DREAM Act, legislation …

Like Crazy: A Writer’S Search For Information And Inspiration, Sarah Lawrence

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

I began this project with the sole aim of learning about the experience of the mentally handicapped in Morocco and the treatment and care options available to their families. However, with my independent study project on hold until I could find an advisor, I began brainstorming a Moroccan-themed fantasy story. Once I started my field research, many of my findings and observations about modern and traditional healing practices for the mentally disabled in the context of the Moroccan family enriched my developing world.

Building Stories Of Resilience In The Face Of Childhood Cancer: Exploring The Experiences Of Childhood Cancer Survivors, Gabrielle Lemarier Apr 2011

Building Stories Of Resilience In The Face Of Childhood Cancer: Exploring The Experiences Of Childhood Cancer Survivors, Gabrielle Lemarier

Social Work Theses

This qualitative study addressed the personal stories, characteristics, influences, and factors which assisted childhood survivors of cancer to be resilient and thrive. Six childhood cancer survivors told stories of coping with the hardships of a cancer diagnosis and eight common themes uniquely experienced by each survivor were revealed. Results of this study indicated that professionals should address a cancer diagnosis as a family diagnosis, constantly facilitating communication within the family system. Health promotion should also be a common professional practice, supporting the individual in self-advocacy. Professionals should also support survivors in the process of making meaning out of his/her cancer …

Empirical Foundations For The Resurrection Of Heckscher–Ohlin Theory, Peter Egger, Kathryn G. Marshall, Eric O'N. Fisher Apr 2011

Empirical Foundations For The Resurrection Of Heckscher–Ohlin Theory, Peter Egger, Kathryn G. Marshall, Eric O'N. Fisher

Economics

We decompose the factor content of trade into Heckscher–Ohlin–Vanek trade and Ricardian trade. We measure factor content using only the United States' technology and also as Leontief advocated, using the local technology. In either case, differences in endowments are quite important in explaining the factor content of trade. If one uses raw estimated coefficients as a means of comparison, differences in endowments are ten times as important as differences in technology.

Legal Mobilization On The Terrain Of The State: Immigrant Rights Practice In Two National Legal Fields, Leila Kawar Apr 2011

Legal Mobilization On The Terrain Of The State: Immigrant Rights Practice In Two National Legal Fields, Leila Kawar

Political Science Faculty Publications

Scholarship on law and social movements has focused attention primarily on the United States, and secondarily on countries that share the Anglo-American legal tradition. The politics of law and social movements in other national legal contexts remains under-examined. The analysis in this article contrasts legal mobilizations for immigrant rights in France and the United States and explores the relations between national fields of power and legal practices. I trace the institutionalization of immigrant rights legal organizations in each country, and argue that the divergent organizational forms and litigation strategies adopted by “professionalized” movement organizations reflect the dynamics of the nationally-distinct …

Transition And Transformation Of Service Agencies Following An Emergency Response, Mary Patrice Bogan Apr 2011

Transition And Transformation Of Service Agencies Following An Emergency Response, Mary Patrice Bogan

Social Work Theses

This study will focus specifically on the transforming effects service agencies experience as they respond to the highly increased need in the surrounding community. A review of the literature reveals that recovery efforts cannot elicit the needed response and support without a sense of urgency that stems from the event(s) being considered an “emergency.” The lack of longevity of the initial urgency threatens the resiliency of the agency as the availability of funding and necessary attention is not maintained. A qualitative, exploratory study was conducted by interviewing ten individuals involved in the Rhode Island emergency winter shelter crisis and five …

Suzlon Foundation - Engage, Empower, Sustain:, Amit Gupta, Vasanthi Srinivasan

Working Papers

The Suzlon case describes the manner in which the CSR activities of the organization moved from adhoc charity, deliberate philanthropy to strategic philanthropy to a more structured corporate wide CSR initiative. In this journey to institutionalized CSR, there was a need for Suzlon to strengthen its systems and processes, hire and retain the right kind of people and get the entire organization to buy into a common philosophy towards involvement in the communities in which Suzlon operated. This case throws light on the manner in which Suzlon went about recruiting a development professional to lead its CSR strategy, the manner …

Changes In Parental Assets And Children's Educational Outcomes, Vernon Loke, Paul Sacco Apr 2011

Changes In Parental Assets And Children's Educational Outcomes, Vernon Loke, Paul Sacco

Social Work Faculty Publications

Several countries, including Canada, Singapore and the United Kingdom, have enacted asset-based policies for children in recent years. The premise underlying these policies is that increases in assets lead to improvement in various child outcomes over time. But little existing research examines this premise from a dynamic perspective. Using data from the NLSY79 mother and child datasets, two parallel process latent growth curve models are estimated to examine the effects of parental asset accumulation on changes in children's achievements over six years during middle childhood. Results indicate that the initial level of assets is positively associated with math scores, but …

Librarians As Partners In Service-Learning Courses (Part I), Maureen Barry Apr 2011

Librarians As Partners In Service-Learning Courses (Part I), Maureen Barry

University Libraries' Staff Publications

Service-learning is a high-impact educational practice that engages students (Kuh, 2008) and is a growing trend in higher education (Campus Compact, 2011). In 2008, my coinstructor and fellow library staff member, Cheryl Lauricella, and I incorporated service-learning in our for-credit information literacy (IL) course because we recognized that connecting information literacy to the real world through service-learning would lead to increased skill retention and engagement with the curriculum (Barry, 2011). Before this realization, when I taught my first few for-credit information literacy courses as a new professional, I asked my students to research a hobby or something related to their …

Strategies To Improve Working Memory In The Classroom, Liana Spencer Apr 2011

Strategies To Improve Working Memory In The Classroom, Liana Spencer

Education Masters

Memory has several different parts and abilities. There are several different theories that attempt to explain how memory works, and what outside influences can change memory or how the process works. Exceptionalities are affected in distinctive ways, as a memory problem in a child with a Learning Disability looks very different then lack of recall does in a child with Autism. A review of the literature shows that there are many different ways memory can be affected, and ways working memory can affect performance. Literature also supported a link between hyperactivity/impulsivity and working memory. This research focused on flashcards as …
