Jews And Humor, Leonard Greenspoon Oct 2011

Jews And Humor, Leonard Greenspoon

Studies in Jewish Civilization

Jews and humor is, for most people, a natural and felicitous collocation. In spite of, or perhaps because of, a history of crises and living on the edge, Jews have often created or resorted to humor. But what is “humor”? And what makes certain types, instances, or performances of humor “Jewish”? These are among the myriad queries addressed by the fourteen authors whose essays are collected in this volume. And, thankfully, their observations, always apt and often witty, are expressed with a lightness of style and a depth of analysis that are appropriate to the many topics they cover. The …

Ghost And Illusion Metaphors Part Of Kiblinger's Lecture At Harvard Divinity School, Winthrop University

Winthrop News 2011

  • In her Oct. 19 lecture about "Caputo's Ghosts, Vasubandhu's Illusions, and Comparative Hauntology," Kiblinger will use ghost and illusion metaphors from two religious thinkers to help her elaborate on her argument and develop a theory of comparative theology as "hauntology."

Modern Education And Changing Identity Constructions In Amdo, Lilian Iselin Oct 2011

Modern Education And Changing Identity Constructions In Amdo, Lilian Iselin

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

This paper examines identity constructions of young and educated Tibetans from a socio-cultural background of nomadic pastoralism in Amdo. It is based on qualitative research conducted between 2003 and 2008, comparing two generations of educated young people from a township in the Amdo region of Northern Sichuan in the People’s Republic of China. It examines developments in education policies and practices as well as economic developments from 2003 to 2008 and argues that identity constructions of school students and graduates need to be analysed against the background of such changes. Conceptualisations of nomad identity are linked to nomadic pastoralism, and …

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The lights from the buildings in Singapore create a landscape of flickering stars on the balcony of my hotel room. I’ve been trying all night to disassociate the calendar date with the real time that I’m living but it’s hard not to think back to a year ago in my life. In less than seven hours I will be waking again to the sound of a piercing alarm. Bali is my next destination- a place that I will attempt to call home for the next three and a half months. I try to forget- an evening spent by myself reminiscing …

Early Christian Sex Change. The Ascetical Context Of "Being Made Male" In Early Christianity, Jennifer Lynne Henery Oct 2011

Early Christian Sex Change. The Ascetical Context Of "Being Made Male" In Early Christianity, Jennifer Lynne Henery

Dissertations (1934 -)

This dissertation shows that in the second and third century Christian stories containing transformational imagery of being made male, the vision of the eschaton motivates individuals to lives of enkrateia and martyrdom. Individuals who choose encratic lives or the life of martyrdom become holy and are described in imagery reflective of the eschaton. The eschatological vision in these texts is the product of Biblical tradition and Second Temple Judaism; visions of the eschaton explain the future state as a return to prelapsarian Eden, as participation in the heavenly temple, and as victory in the eschatological battle. This vision is the …
