Teaching Religion In The Deep South, William L. Smith Nov 2011

Teaching Religion In The Deep South, William L. Smith

Journal of Excellence in College Teaching and Learning

The purpose of this paper is to generate discussion about the teaching and learning sociology and religious studies using the "study in depth" method. In addition, the author shares with readers how one course, and a specific set of readings contributed to a department's overall plan for study in depth in sociology. Study in depth is defined as the comprehension of "a complex structure of knowledge" (Association of American Colleges). It uses a multidisciplinary approach that is vital to teaching and learning sociology, religious studies, and other subjects. Sociology of Religion at this university is an upper-division elective for sociology …

Rethinking Assimilation Through The Lens Of Transnational Migration, Bo Yong Lee Nov 2011

Rethinking Assimilation Through The Lens Of Transnational Migration, Bo Yong Lee

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Given the changing global environment and different experiences of the new immigrants, it is necessary to delve into the question of how the notions and patterns of immigration and assimilation change through the lens of transnational migration that focuses on the connection of immigrants to the context of both sending and receiving countries. Recognizing the transnational religious activities and creative adaptations of the new immigrants to new environments can enrich the study of assimilation, which reflects the changing picture of multilayered American society and its constituents. To examine the assimilation process of Korean immigrants through their transnational religious activities, my …

From Cosmogony To Anthropogony: Inscribing Bodies In Vedic Cosmogony And Samskara Rituals, Christine Boulos Nov 2011

From Cosmogony To Anthropogony: Inscribing Bodies In Vedic Cosmogony And Samskara Rituals, Christine Boulos

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This thesis argues that the inscription of bodies is necessary in order to constitute the cosmos, gender and sex. A study of the Vedic cosmogonic mythologies of the deities Purusha and Prajapati illustrates the ways in which sacrifice, as a form of inscription, constitutes the cosmos by ordering and fashioning the boundaries of the bodies of the deities through differentiation and unification. An analysis of samskaras, or consecratory rites of The Law Code of Manu, show that they operate as regulatory norms in order to constitute sex and gender. But the instability and unnaturalness of the categories of gender and …

Ethical Foundations For Peaceful Coexistence; A Cultural Investigation Of "Keselarasan", Andreas Yumarma Oct 2011

Ethical Foundations For Peaceful Coexistence; A Cultural Investigation Of "Keselarasan", Andreas Yumarma

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Multiculturality and cultural differences are undeniable reality in both Indonesia and the world. Without wisdom such conditions can cause tensions, disputes, and conflicts. For this reason, investigation on the ethical principles contained in keselarasan can provide foundations needed for peaceful coexistence which is crucial in such multicultural conditions as are prevalent in Indonesia. Basic principles such as respect, peace, and empan papan (knowing how to place oneself) are fundamental for living in a multicultural situation. The ethical foundations in keselarasan therefore contribute solutions to manage cultural difference and multiculturalism. These are the basic principles that can help avoid violent social …

Attitudes Toward Dam Construction In The Garhwal Region Of The Himalayas, Denise Benoit Scott, Annpurna Nautiyal

Himalayan Policy Research Conference

Although mass protest against business and the state is not at all uncommon in the hill region, residents of the Chauras region have been relatively silent with regard to the dam project. In fact, little is know about the attitudes of the people in the region beyond assumptions make by policymakers and academics. This study sheds light on the conditions, experiences, and concerns of the villagers most affected by the dam project. The findings are important for informing public policy in areas where these kinds of major “development” projects interact with, and have the potential to deeply affect, the surrounding …
