Portrait Of A Nation: A Review Of Claude Fischer's 'Made In America: A Social History Of American Culture And Character', William Vance Trollinger
Portrait Of A Nation: A Review Of Claude Fischer's 'Made In America: A Social History Of American Culture And Character', William Vance Trollinger
History Faculty Publications
The distinguished University of California sociologist Claude Fischer is unhappy with historians' failure to provide the grand narrative — in this case the grand narrative of American history. Fischer is convinced that there is an American national character that makes America exceptional and that its central feature is voluntarism, defined here as something like individualistic collegiality: We are "sovereign individuals,'' but we love to be in groups that …

Creativity And Cultural Influence In Early Jewish Law, Roberta Rosenthal Kwall
Creativity And Cultural Influence In Early Jewish Law, Roberta Rosenthal Kwall
Notre Dame Law Review
The article discusses various aspects of creativity in early Jewish law, including the fundamental tenets of the Jewish legal system, the relationship between the law and culture, and acculturation in 21st century communities. The author states that a cultural analysis will provide insight into how evolution in the Jewish law can ensure Jewish survival. She argues that halakhah, also known as Jewish religious law, has been formed by various Jewish and non-Jewish cultural developments.

Invisible Jews : Does Internalized Anti-Semitism Play A Role In Unaddressed Jewish Poverty In America?, Lilith Gabrielle Wolinsky
Invisible Jews : Does Internalized Anti-Semitism Play A Role In Unaddressed Jewish Poverty In America?, Lilith Gabrielle Wolinsky
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This theoretical study looks at unexamined Jewish poverty in contemporary America through the two lenses of internalized anti-Semitism/internalized oppression/self-hate, and internalized superiority/Jewish exceptionalism/ethnocentrism with the intention of determining whether or not the constructs represented by these composite lenses have any bearing on the continued existence of Jewish poverty in the United States. Study results indicate that while the relationship between Jewish poverty and internalized Jewish oppression is not causal, unexamined internalized anti-Semitism may be a factor which prevents Jews from acknowledging and addressing this ill within their midst and as such, which perpetuates Jewish poverty. Study results also indicate that …
