Shamanic Knowledge: The Challenge To Information Science, Jay H. Bernstein Sep 2011

Shamanic Knowledge: The Challenge To Information Science, Jay H. Bernstein

Publications and Research

Shamanism, a form of healing involving soul travel and trance found in many traditional societies the world over, has been studied by anthropologists and scholars of religious studies. Shamanic traditions are characterized by specialized, restricted, and esoteric knowledge domains that are encoded and communicated through condensed and mystified symbols and reproduced in ceremonies. Shamanic knowledge is acquired through direct experience of the numinous, usually in the process of overcoming personal affliction. Information science so far has been silent on shamanic knowledge. This is understandable given the latter discipline's focus on formal documentary information systems and advanced information technologies. But in …

Blind Men And Elephants: A Multi-Method Analysis Of Periodical Literature, Garrett Trott Sep 2011

Blind Men And Elephants: A Multi-Method Analysis Of Periodical Literature, Garrett Trott

The Christian Librarian

One blind man feels a tree. Another blind man feels something sharp, like a spear; and a third, feels something like a fan. All these men feel the same thing, an elephant, but different parts of it. This article looks at journal content through three separate lenses: faculty perception, citation analysis, and journal use. Each lens perceives journal value differently. Once these pictures are assembled, the challenge begins, attempting to understand what they compose. Like the disagreements these blind men had on what they were feeling, the data produced from these three lenses does not appear to coincide. It did …

What Are The Athletic Stressors And Clinical Implications Experienced By First Year Division Iii Student-Athletes : An Exploratory Study, Jennifer A. Johnson, Jennifer Anne Johnson

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This exploratory study was undertaken to investigate the ways that stressors from athletics may impact Division III female student-athletes emotional and cognitive states during their first year at college. Findings were compared to the experiences from various studentathletes from other divisions, assessing the extent to which they have coped and managed their stress. Data was collected from Division III female athletes at two all-women's colleges located in New England. With the help of five guided interview questions, narrative interviews were conducted with seven subjects who spoke about their first year experiences as a student-athlete. Interview questions were carefully designed to …

Imagining The Saints: Representations Of Mormonism In American Culture, Jeremy R. Ricketts Aug 2011

Imagining The Saints: Representations Of Mormonism In American Culture, Jeremy R. Ricketts

American Studies ETDs

The purpose of this dissertation is to address how representations of Mormons in American culture reveal not only key aspects of the history of Mormonism in America but also tell us a great deal about American life and thought since the founding of the religion in 1830 to the present day (2011). Representations are powerful vehicles for creating, shaping, reflecting, and naturalizing society's understanding of religious institutions and revealing cultural concerns and anxieties, and the methodology of this dissertation thus focuses on interdisciplinary analytical critiques of diverse texts to better elucidate the complicated but deeply intertwined history of the Mormon …

Home Away From Home: The Assimilation Of The Hispanic Population In Jonesboro, Arkansas, Melany Magee Bowman Aug 2011

Home Away From Home: The Assimilation Of The Hispanic Population In Jonesboro, Arkansas, Melany Magee Bowman

Student Theses and Dissertations

Since 2000, the Hispanic population in Jonesboro skyrocketed 170.1 percent. With the growing Hispanic presence, how will Hispanics with English language deficiencies overcome language barriers in a city composed primarily of English speaking people? Are local businesses, educational institutions, social service agencies, city and county government offices ready to provide the goods and services needed by a growing Hispanic population? Do Hispanic newcomers feel welcome in Jonesboro? Are there opportunities for Hispanics to integrate into Jonesboro's non-Hispanic community? Is the growing Hispanic cultural imprint appearing in Jonesboro evidence of a people clinging to their national heritage instead of seeking opportunities …

Semiotics, Habitus And Music In The Transmission Of Tibetan Culture In Toronto, John Robertson Aug 2011

Semiotics, Habitus And Music In The Transmission Of Tibetan Culture In Toronto, John Robertson

Masters Theses

This ethnographic study explores the role of music in cultural transmission in the Tibetan community of Toronto, Canada. Beginning with an integration of Peircian semiotics, Bourdieu's habitus and musical semiosis, I then identify certain non-Tibetan cultural elements being encountered by those in the Toronto community which are potentially creating cognitive structures foreign to those which have their generative principles in pre-exile Tibetan past, and the ways in which Tibetans are transmitting (to varying degrees) cognitive schemata which identify these non-Tibetan elements and protect against their appropriation. After exploring elements which are not Tibetan, I turn to those which are: a …

Introducing Astrophysics And Cosmology As Part Of Multidisciplinary Approaches To Liberal Arts Courses Addressing “The Big Questions” Of Human Experience, Joseph C. Wesney Aug 2011

Introducing Astrophysics And Cosmology As Part Of Multidisciplinary Approaches To Liberal Arts Courses Addressing “The Big Questions” Of Human Experience, Joseph C. Wesney

Physics Faculty Publications

There is an opportunity to bring college students to the exploration of the grandeur and wonder of the universe through the design and crafting of courses for the university and liberal arts curricula that would develop multidisciplinary perspectives within the frames of reference of astrophysics and cosmology. There is broad interest within colleges and universities to provide courses that examine “The Big Questions” of human experience from a variety of perspectives. The study of the history of discoveries and insights that we have gained through the development of astrophysics and cosmology provides course options for students to use to explore …

Santo Toribio: The Rise Of A Saint, Thomas G. Evans Aug 2011

Santo Toribio: The Rise Of A Saint, Thomas G. Evans

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Santo Toribio (1900-28) was canonized by the Roman Catholic Church in 2000 as a martyr of Mexico's bloody Cristero Rebellion. He enjoyed a modest local following for decades after the Rebellion as many of the other Cristero martyr-saints did. However, around the time of his canonization, a new identity began to emerge different from that of martyr; he became the patron saint of immigration. For believers, Santo Toribio helps mitigate the criminal nature of this act by showing God's approval and blessing. He places the pain and social distortion of Border crossing in Roman Catholic contexts of holiness and divine …

Re-Visioning The Semantic And Semiotic Registers In The Study Of Culture And Religion, Gary S. Bedford Aug 2011

Re-Visioning The Semantic And Semiotic Registers In The Study Of Culture And Religion, Gary S. Bedford

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The term `God' may be understood as the desire for the complete epistemological condition of thought; language expresses this condition in statements of `meaning.' `Religion' expresses this desire in texts and ritual practice which may be examined by in academic study; however, because the `third term' of religio is understood as the condition of being `bounded to or by,' the study of religion is itself bounded to or by this desire for the completion of thought. This desire cannot be understood as an `alterity' of thought but is rather the internal native or `alter-native' condition of thought itself. …

Protecting The Unborn Child: The Current State Of Law Concerning The So-Called Right To Abortion And Intervention By The Holy See, Tom Venzor Aug 2011

Protecting The Unborn Child: The Current State Of Law Concerning The So-Called Right To Abortion And Intervention By The Holy See, Tom Venzor

Nebraska Law Review

Arguments for the right to have an abortion range from allowing abortions only when necessary to save a woman’s life to, most broadly, allowing abortions for socio-economic reasons or simply upon request. The most liberal arguments support a “right to voluntary motherhood.” Under these arguments, the right to obtain an abortion is “arguably integral to a constellation of other fundamental human rights such as women’s right of equality, life, health, security of person, private and family life, freedom of religion, conscience and opinion, and freedom from slavery, torture and cruel, and inhuman and/or degrading treatment.” Furthermore, “women’s right to self …
