Complex Vs Profiles To 100 M Depth From Rayleigh Waves And 3-D Vs Model For Las Vegas Valley, Helena Murvosh May 2011

Complex Vs Profiles To 100 M Depth From Rayleigh Waves And 3-D Vs Model For Las Vegas Valley, Helena Murvosh

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

A three-dimensional (3-D) shear wave velocity (VS) model was developed for the heterogeneous shallow sediments (to nearly 400 m) of the Las Vegas Valley (LVV), Nevada. The model was based on more than 200 VS profiles and 1400 geologic well logs. Five sediment units including a cemented unit were defined from geologic log descriptions. A characteristic VS profile for four of the units was obtained by correlating between closely spaced pairs of VS and sediment data; a constant VS was assigned to the cemented unit. VS profiles were then assigned to each well location based on type of sediment according …

Mathematical Modeling Of Metamaterials, Valjean Elizabeth Elander May 2011

Mathematical Modeling Of Metamaterials, Valjean Elizabeth Elander

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Metamaterials are artificially structured nano materials with negative refraction index. The successful construction of such metamaterials in 2000 triggered a great interest in study of metamaterials by researchers from different areas. The discovery of metamaterials opened a wide potential for applications in diverse areas such as cloaking, sub-wavelength imaging, solar cell design and antennas.

In this thesis, we investigate the most popular Drude metamaterial model. More specifically, we first present a brief overview of metamaterials and their potential applications, then we discuss the well-posedness of this model, and develop several numerical schemes to solve it. We implement our schemes using …

The Right To Privacy In Light Of The Patriot Act And Social Contract Theory, Betsey Sue Casman May 2011

The Right To Privacy In Light Of The Patriot Act And Social Contract Theory, Betsey Sue Casman

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

There is a continual debate between individuals who attempt to measure the individual’s right to privacy against the government’s right to know in order to provide for the security of all citizens.

The questions that beg to be answered are whether the individual’s right to privacy outweighs the government’s duty to provide security; and if security is deemed more important, can there even be a right to privacy. It is critical to our nation’s anti-terrorism effort that our intelligence agencies possess the legal capacity to intercept all forms of communications utilized by terrorists and hostile intelligence agents. Inevitably this will …

Two Versions Of Rational-Basis Review And Same-Sex Relationships, Robert C. Farrell May 2011

Two Versions Of Rational-Basis Review And Same-Sex Relationships, Robert C. Farrell

Washington Law Review

Although it purports to be a single standard, equal protection’s rational-basis review has two faces that use different methods and produce conflicting results. The United States Supreme Court employs both versions but does not acknowledge that a conflict exists between them. Without an explicit acknowledgment of the contradictory nature of the two rationality reviews, it follows that the Court has made no effort to explain in what context one version should be used and in what context the other is appropriate. As a result, it is very difficult to predict with accuracy the outcome of arguments based on equal protection’s …

Set In Stone: Legends, Traditions, And Symbols Influencing Place Attachment For Southern Utah University Students, Claudine Nielsen May 2011

Set In Stone: Legends, Traditions, And Symbols Influencing Place Attachment For Southern Utah University Students, Claudine Nielsen

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

This study explored the influence of campus legends, traditions, and symbols on the development of place attachment in students at Southern Utah University. An examination of organizational theory, including universities as cultures, student development theory, alumni participation, and place attachment revealed no cross-disciplinary research into how place attachment to a university campus may be influenced by intentional attempts to instill a sense of collective identity through the stories and rituals that occur on campus, hence the need to address this void. Unlike many organizations, colleges have a vested interest in maintaining a connection with students beyond the point of separation. …

Mother-Son Connectedness, Substance Use, And Young Men's Criminal Justice System Involvement, Kim L. Moreno Phd May 2011

Mother-Son Connectedness, Substance Use, And Young Men's Criminal Justice System Involvement, Kim L. Moreno Phd

Dissertations

The relationship between a mother and her son and its influence on health and risk behaviors as a boy becomes a man has had little exploration. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between mother-son connectedness, substance use, serious delinquency, violent delinquency, and criminal justice system involvement in young men. This study uses data from The National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (ADD Health), a school-based study of students in grades 7–12 in the United States. Multiple regression, ANOVA, and logistic regression were used to analyze independent and dependent variables. Results show a perception of connectedness, which …

Waterfront Revitalization: Bridgeport Aquarium And Waterfront Promenade, Ryan Devenney

Architecture Theses and Projects

I am proposing a new public institution, a waterfront aquarium, along with a waterfront promenade, to be located in Bridgeport, Connecticut. This new development will be linked to an existing park, ferry terminal, and an Amtrak train station, along with two other proposed parks. This project will help support urban revitalization in the city. It is based off of several similar projects such as the National Aquarium located in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor district, and the Adventure Aquarium located on the Camden Waterfront. These projects include an aquarium as the centerpiece of their waterfront-based renewal scheme. This new public institution will …

A Conceptual Model Of Primary Care In New York State, Kelly Storrs May 2011

A Conceptual Model Of Primary Care In New York State, Kelly Storrs

Nursing Doctoral

The purpose of this project is to describe a conceptual Model for Primary Care in New York State (NYS). This model (Figure 1) places Nurse Practitioners (NPs) as first line primary care providers allowing physicians as specialists caring for the most difficult, complex cases. In the current model of primary care NPs are required to practice in statutory collaboration with a physician, are currently restricted from participating in many insurance panels, are reimbursed less for the same service performed by a physician, and are prevented from signing many health care orders and documents secondary to health care laws that were …

Public Opinion And The Death Penalty: A Qualitative Approach, Diana L. Falco, Tina L. Freiburger May 2011

Public Opinion And The Death Penalty: A Qualitative Approach, Diana L. Falco, Tina L. Freiburger

The Qualitative Report

Strong public support for capital punishment is arguably the number one reason why the death penalty continues to be used as a form of correctional policy in the U.S. criminal justice system. Therefore, it is fundamental that the measure of death penalty opinion be heavily scrutinized. Utilizing a methodological approach not typically employed in this area, the current study conducted six focus groups to gain a better understanding of the complexity of these opinions. During the focus groups, participants were asked to state their general beliefs concerning the death penalty, respond to scenarios, and respond to research findings regarding the …

Recovering From Hurricane Katrina: Small Business Owners Conquer Katrina: A Mixed Methodology Study, Penny Madonna Adams May 2011

Recovering From Hurricane Katrina: Small Business Owners Conquer Katrina: A Mixed Methodology Study, Penny Madonna Adams

Dissertations

On August 29, 2005, residents of Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi's Gulf Coast Regions faced death and destruction as Hurricane Katrina made landfall. The hurricane presented numerous challenges to the Gulf Coast Region; hence, many residents continue to rebuild more than five years later. Small business owners, in particular, comprise one of the populations hardest hit.

Prior research identified barriers to recovery hindering small business owners post-Hurricane Katrina. The purpose of the current research is to determine how "recovered" small businesses overcame financial barriers post-Hurricane Katrina. This study examines the recovery process from the small business owners' perspective and evaluates the …

The Military's Role In Counterterrorism: Examples And Implications For Liberal Democracies, Geraint Hughes Dr. May 2011

The Military's Role In Counterterrorism: Examples And Implications For Liberal Democracies, Geraint Hughes Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

The author examines historical and contemporary examples of military involvement in counterterrorism, outlining the specific roles which the armed forces of liberal democracies have performed in combating terrorism, both in a domestic and international context. He describes the political, strategic, conceptual, diplomatic, and ethical problems that can arise when a state’s armed forces become engaged in counterterrorism, and argues that military power can only be employed as part of a coordinated counterterrorist strategy aimed at the containment and frustration, rather than the physical elimination, of the terrorist group(s) concerned.

The Incautious Media, Free Speech, And The Unfair Trial: Why Prosecutors Need More Realistic Guidance In Dealing With The Press, Andrew E. Taslitz May 2011

The Incautious Media, Free Speech, And The Unfair Trial: Why Prosecutors Need More Realistic Guidance In Dealing With The Press, Andrew E. Taslitz

UC Law Journal

The ABA has proposed a new Standard for the Prosecution Function, Standard 3-1.7, which addresses how prosecutors should communicate with the media. The core portion of that proposal prohibits a prosecutor from making a statement raising a substantial risk of materially prejudicing a criminal proceeding or of unnecessarily heightening public condemnation of the accused. But this proposal is unrealistic. Recent findings in cognitive science suggest that media information overload and its fast pace result in media coverage of high-profile trials that heightens audience’s negative emotions while compromising their critical faculties. Audience members thus are enraged at accused offenders and ill-equipped …

Problem-Solving Courts And The Defense Function: The Wisconsin Experience, Ben Kempinent May 2011

Problem-Solving Courts And The Defense Function: The Wisconsin Experience, Ben Kempinent

UC Law Journal

Problem-solving courts have emerged as one of the fastest growing innovations in the criminal justice system. Their growth has not been without controversy, given their dramatic departure from a traditional adversary model in favor of a collaborative approach in dealing with offenders with serious alcohol or substance abuse, or mental health issues. The most outspoken criticism of this approach has come from the defense bar. This Essay suggests much of the criticism is misplaced, and, that if care is exercised in separating the roles that defense counsel plays in communities with problem-solving courts the promise of this approach for appropriate …

Dangerous People Or Dangerous Weapons: Access To Firearms For Persons With Mental Illness, Lawrence O. Gostin, Katherine L. Record May 2011

Dangerous People Or Dangerous Weapons: Access To Firearms For Persons With Mental Illness, Lawrence O. Gostin, Katherine L. Record

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

The recent attempted assassination of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords has once again focused the nation’s attention on the danger of the wide availability of firearms.  The Supreme Court has ruled that gun restrictions may only be imposed on those deemed “prohibited persons” under the Gun Control Act of 1968.  Although some are easily identifiable (e.g., children, convicted felons), one widely inclusive group is not – the mentally ill.

The current system designed to bar the mentally ill from purchasing or possessing firearms is ineffectual due to a lack of reporting and the existence of loopholes.  What’s more, no state has developed …

A Landscape Analysis Of Surface Coal Mine Permits In The Coal River Watershed Of West Virginia, Lafe Joseph Kunkel May 2011

A Landscape Analysis Of Surface Coal Mine Permits In The Coal River Watershed Of West Virginia, Lafe Joseph Kunkel

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In Appalachia, coal mining is a vital economic activity. Steps must be taken to ensure the future of the coal mining industry as well as the ecological sustainability of the landscape. By examining the effects of landscape disturbance on stream water quality, disturbance thresholds can be calculated from stream conductivity measurements in various segment level watersheds that contain varying levels of landscape disturbance. These thresholds can indicate how much landscape disturbance can be allowed in a segment-level watershed before water quality depreciates past certain conductivity levels or levels necessary to support macro-invertebrate life. This analysis was conducted on the Coal …

Factors Contributing To Secondary School Dropouts In The Jackson Public School District, The Largest Urban School District In The State Of Mississippi, Calvin Lockett

Theses and Dissertations

For many years, nationwide, approximately one third of American high school students have not been graduating from high school. The dropout rate is one of the reasons cited for the implementation of the No Child Left Behind legislation, which highlighted the severity of the dropout problem and the imposing priorities and standards placed on school districts. Mississippi leads the nation in the rate of students who drop out of high school. The purpose of this study was to examine the factors that contribute to the dropout epidemic in secondary schools in the Jackson (Mississippi) Public School District where annually a …
