Residual Strength Of Ultra-High Performance Concrete After Exposure To Elevated Temperatures, Brian T. Burke May 2011

Residual Strength Of Ultra-High Performance Concrete After Exposure To Elevated Temperatures, Brian T. Burke

Master's Theses

This paper presents the results of a study on the effect of elevated temperatures on the compressive strength of ultra-high-performance fiber-reinforced concrete (UHPFRC). Two different mixtures of a commercially available UHPFRC were considered in this study. The standard mixture offered by the manufacturer incorporates only steel-fibers to improve the tensile properties of the concrete. The enhanced mixture, which is of primary focus in the study, incorporates additional polypropylene fibers to improve the fire-resistance behavior. Specimens from each mixture were cast into 76 mm (3 in.) diameter cylinders and 51 mm (2 in.) cubes. After exposure to elevated temperatures …

The History Of Zoological Gardens And The State, Federal And International Laws That Govern Them, Morgan Maxwell May 2011

The History Of Zoological Gardens And The State, Federal And International Laws That Govern Them, Morgan Maxwell

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

The history of zoos in North America can be traced back through 18th century Europe to ancient civilizations such as the Romans. The menageries of ancient Rome were far different from modern zoos that stress conservation, education, and research as primary objectives. Zoos are still evolving and changing to become more suitable for captive animals and to ensure their animals’ health and well-being. An examination of state wildlife laws reveals that there are more laws that pertain to wildlife at the state and local level than at any other level of government. Federal wildlife laws are few in number and …

When Disaster Strikes: A Proposed Model For Child Life Programming In Disaster Relief Settings, Caralyn Perlee May 2011

When Disaster Strikes: A Proposed Model For Child Life Programming In Disaster Relief Settings, Caralyn Perlee

Graduate Student Independent Studies

In the aftermath of a major natural disaster, few are equipped to respond effectively to the unique emotional and psychological needs to children. Child life specialists are specifically trained to help children effectively cope with traumatic situations, though very few child life specialists have engaged in disaster-related work. There exists the need for a medium through which child life specialists can become involved and offer their crucial and unique services. This project offers a rationale for why this medium is necessary and proposes a model for the integration of child life into the pre-existing Red Cross disaster relief model.

Attributes Affecting Preferences For Traffic Safety Camera Programs, Lindsey M. Higgins, W. Douglass Shaw, Aklesso Egbendewe-Mondzozo May 2011

Attributes Affecting Preferences For Traffic Safety Camera Programs, Lindsey M. Higgins, W. Douglass Shaw, Aklesso Egbendewe-Mondzozo

Agribusiness

With just a few notable exceptions, research supports the concept that red light cameras (RLCs) improve safety. However, many communities that have implemented RLC programs have faced a firestorm of public opinion associated with the use of RLCS, with many communities having to remove the cameras. What makes or breaks a red light camera program? Because of the experimental design process, stated choice is recognized as a tool that can resemble a laboratory experiment for the public policy arena. In this research, a stated choice model was developed and used to explore public preferences for a RLC program through an …

Alternatives For Youth: A Mental Health Perspective, Carolyn Anne Steinman May 2011

Alternatives For Youth: A Mental Health Perspective, Carolyn Anne Steinman

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Since the 1980's, the common practice in handling juvenile justice involved youth in the United States has been with punitive sanctions and institutional placement. The general agreement among policy makers, politicians and juvenile justice professionals is that there is a better way to help these young men and women than with institutional placement or detention. It has been shown that most youth involved in the juvenile justice system can be better served by community based supports grounded in evidence based principles and practices. The purpose of this study was to discover the factors associated with successful outcomes and failures for …

Necessary To The Security Of A Free State: Federalism And The Original Meaning Of The Second Amendment, Douglas H. Walker May 2011

Necessary To The Security Of A Free State: Federalism And The Original Meaning Of The Second Amendment, Douglas H. Walker

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Interpretations of the Second Amendment's original meaning encompass two extremes: an "individual rights" interpretation which argues that it protects each person's right to own and use weapons for any non-criminal purpose; and a "collective rights" interpretation which asserts that it protects only the states' right to maintain a National Guard force. Both positions cater to contemporary political agendas, display excessive presentism, lack lucid historical analysis, and ignore federalism and its bearing on the Second Amendment's original meaning. This thesis uncovers the ideological and historical origins of the right to keep and bear arms and interprets the original meaning of the …

Louisville-Jefferson County Police Consolidation : Officers' Perception Of Organizational Justice., Joseph Sterling Grant 1962- May 2011

Louisville-Jefferson County Police Consolidation : Officers' Perception Of Organizational Justice., Joseph Sterling Grant 1962-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study focuses on how the 2001 consolidation of the Louisville Division of Police (LPD) and Jefferson County Police Department (JCPD) impacted police officers' perception of fairness of the process. To accomplish this, the study asked four research questions: 1) How do police officers view a just department?, 2) How do police officers' justice judgments affect their reaction to the organization and supervisors?, 3) How do police officers form overall perceptions of fairness?, and 4) How do LPD and JCPD officers differ in their perceptions of fairness of the consolidation? A systematic random sample with replacement was used to invite …

How Collaborative The Collaboration? : Assessing The Collaboration Of Services For Juvenile Offenders., James G. Dickerson May 2011

How Collaborative The Collaboration? : Assessing The Collaboration Of Services For Juvenile Offenders., James G. Dickerson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Juvenile delinquency with co-occurring substance abuse and mental health disorders has become an increasing problem within the United States. In part this can be attributed to the excessive number of delinquent youth entering the juvenile justice system with untreated substance abuse and/or mental health disorders-thus requiring juvenile justice to become a default system for substance abuse and mental health intervention and treatment services. In an effort to combat this problem, governmental, mental health, social support agencies, and school systems have formed interagency collaborations to provide more effective treatment services. One such interagency collaboration is the JETS Program, a court diversion …

The Role Of Planning Tools As Strategies For Combating Childhood Obesity, Jacquelyn Coats May 2011

The Role Of Planning Tools As Strategies For Combating Childhood Obesity, Jacquelyn Coats

All Theses

The failure of traditional health models to successfully combat childhood obesity is apparent when considering its sustained prevalence in the United States. Childhood obesity rates have tripled over the past three decades and health officials recognize the need for integrative strategies in order to reverse the trend (CDC, 2010). The historical roots of planning and public health offer a potential venue for collaborative strategies to address the macro level factors that affect community health. This thesis examines how planning tools have been adapted to incorporate health strategies, whether or not such methods are sustainable, and what relationships are essential for …

Investigation Of The Use Of Multi-Criteria Decision-Making Tools For Management Of An Urbanizing Watershed, Reed C. Colton May 2011

Investigation Of The Use Of Multi-Criteria Decision-Making Tools For Management Of An Urbanizing Watershed, Reed C. Colton

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The regulation of non-point pollution sources (e.g. agricultural runoff and stormwater discharges) as mandated by the 1972 Clean Water Act, forced a fundamental paradigm shift from “end of the pipe” pollution control to a watershed management approach. Multiple jurisdictions and often conflicting objectives make it difficult to reach stakeholder consensus and execute watershed management decisions. To facilitate decision making when multiple and/or conflicting objectives exist, Multi-Criteria Decision-Making (MCDM) tools were developed for diverse applications, and potentially could be used to facilitate watershed management.

The overall objective of this thesis was to evaluate MCDM tool use to facilitate community-based management of …

Reasoning About The Irrational: The Roberts Court And The Future Of Constitutional Law, H. Jefferson Powell May 2011

Reasoning About The Irrational: The Roberts Court And The Future Of Constitutional Law, H. Jefferson Powell

Washington Law Review

Commentary on the future direction of the Roberts Court generally falls along lines that correlate with the commentators’ political views on the desirability of the Court’s recent decisions. A more informative approach is to look for opinions suggesting changes in the presuppositions with which the Justices approach constitutional decision making. In footnote 27 in his opinion for the Court in the District of Columbia v. Heller Second Amendment decision, Justice Scalia suggested a fundamental revision of the Court’s assumptions about the role of judicial doctrine, and the concept of rationality, in constitutional law. Justice Scalia would eliminate the normative aspects …

Contained in this writing package are the seven best-crafted and most compelling pieces of writing of my undergraduate career. They have been assembled, expanded and edited under the supervision of my project advisor, Professor Thomas Bass, into this final product. One of the benefits of majoring in Journalism I most appreciate is having the freedom to constantly explore new topics in my writing. This collection reflects the broad scope of the major, as it includes articles covering a diverse range of issues and events, as well as a media study and an autobiographical story. The composition of each of the …

You Are What You Eat: Photographic Portrait Series, Danielle Carrick May 2011

You Are What You Eat: Photographic Portrait Series, Danielle Carrick

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

You Are What You Eat is a photographic portrait series drawing visual parallels between food and people. Each portrait consists of not one, but two separate images – a person and the food they resemble. The series pays homage to portrait photography and food photography but is defined by neither.

Each pairing is based on physical attributes of the food subject and human model. For example, the freckled face of a man is side by side with a sesame seed bagel, the pattern and coloring of both mirroring each other. Likewise, a tall, thin girl is perfectly posed to resemble …

Citrustv Website Redesign Project, Alyssa Elias

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

Many students who live off campus at Syracuse University are unable to view the Orange Television Network. CitrusTV's news, sports and entertainment programming airs on this channel and is therefore unavailable to many students. To expand the viewing audience, the CitrusTV website is crucial.

The original goal of this honors capstone project was to enhance and improve CitrusTV’s website in order to simulate that of a local news station. Through a newly created content management system, students would be able to upload news stories with text, video and pictures.

Because of CitrusTV’s annually changing administration and technical hurdles, the project’s …

Geoenabling A Rural Community Through Web Gis: A Case Study Of The City Of Hays, Ellis County Kansas, Eamonn W. Coveney

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

The objective of this study was to describe the internet GIS implementation in the City of Hays and Ellis County, Kansas, then compare it to examples of implementation from other similar communities. Geospatial resources were consolidated from both agencies and used to develop two web mapping applications for employee and public access. Both mapping applications were developed on the ArcGIS Server platform using the .NET Web Application Developer Framework. In addition, a HTML website was developed to accommodate common data requests and an online map repository. The implementation approach of the City of Hays and Ellis County is similar to …

Bigger Is Better? A Comparative Study Of Humanitarian Efforts Of International Organizations In Haiti, Crisely Melecio Zambrano May 2011

Bigger Is Better? A Comparative Study Of Humanitarian Efforts Of International Organizations In Haiti, Crisely Melecio Zambrano

HIM 1990-2015

This thesis conducts a comparative study of international organizations in regard to their effectiveness towards addressing humanitarian concerns in Haiti. The three case studies are the operations of the United Nations, Catholic Relief Services, and REBUILD Globally, predominantly after the January 2010 quake. The hypothesis supported in this study is that the services of smaller organizations prove to be more successful than larger NGOs, although they do not have the immense resources of organizations such as the United Nations. The independent variables are type and quantity of funding, form of humanitarian work, and duration of support. All three variables establish …

The Florida Beach Case And The Road To Judicial Takings, Michael C. Blumm, Elizabeth B. Dawson May 2011

The Florida Beach Case And The Road To Judicial Takings, Michael C. Blumm, Elizabeth B. Dawson

William & Mary Environmental Law and Policy Review

In Stop the Beach Renourishment v. Florida Department of Environmental Protection, the U.S. Supreme Court unanimously upheld a state beach restoration project against landowner claims of an unconstitutional taking of the property. This result was not nearly as surprising as the fact that the Court granted certiorari on a case that turned on an obscure aspect of Florida property law: whether landowners adjacent to a beach had the rights to future accretions of sand and to maintain contact with the water.

The Court’s curious interest in the case was piqued by the landowners’ recasting the case from the regulatory taking …
