The Use Of Visuals In Health Education, Ying Yan Vigenia Njoo-Lau Jan 2011

The Use Of Visuals In Health Education, Ying Yan Vigenia Njoo-Lau

Graduate Research Papers

America has a very complex health care system. It is often required a welleducated individual "to obtain, process, and understand basic health information and services needed to make appropriate health decisions" (Nielsen-Bohlman, 2004). It is also required multiple skills, like reading, writing, listening, speaking, mathematic, and decision-making (Safeer & Keenan, 2005).

90 million American adults have limited health literacy to navigate of the health care system in the United States. People with limited health literacy have trouble communicating with their health care providers, understand and adherence of medical information, medical usage. $73 billion health care cost was estimated in 1998 …

Pre-Adulthood Developmental Psycho-Social Influences Behind Women Becoming Engineers In Contemporary Australia, Andrew Ruscoe Jan 2011

Pre-Adulthood Developmental Psycho-Social Influences Behind Women Becoming Engineers In Contemporary Australia, Andrew Ruscoe

Theses : Honours

This study explored the pre-adulthood development of female engineers with a focus on influences behind their career choice. Pre-adulthood encompasses the ages 0. to 23 and includes all development prior to settling on a career (Levinson, Darrow, Klein, Levinson, & McKee, 1979). ,This area of study derives its importance from the continuing low proportion of women in engineering (9.6%; Kaspura, 2009), the gender bias that this may indicate (Burke & Mattis, 2007), and the benefits of increasing the number of women• in engineering (Engineers Australia, 20 I 0). A phenomenological methodology was applied, utilising semi-structured interviews with 10 female graduate, …

Theses : Honours

OBJECTIVE: To review the research examining the effectiveness of vocational training programs, transition programs and work experience placements and describe their impact on work and employment attainment and maintenance for young adults with intellectual disability. METHOD: Electronic searches of six data bases and manual searches of references lists locating all available evidence of programs and interventions to assist young adults with intellectual disability to find paid employment. Interventions described as vocational training, work placements and experience and transition programs aimed at securing employment were included. Two reviewers undertook data extraction and quality assessment and a systematic review was possible. RESULTS: …

The Sun Safety Attitudes Of Parents And The Effects On Their Children, Matthew Welch Jan 2011

The Sun Safety Attitudes Of Parents And The Effects On Their Children, Matthew Welch

Theses : Honours

Parents are seen as the most important role models in the development of health practice behaviours, including sun safety for their children. The aim of the current study is to explore the experiences and sun protection knowledge, attitudes and behaviours of a parent of a child who has seen a UV photograph of both themselves and their child. By utilising UV flash photography, parents were able to see the damage done to their face and their child’s face caused by overexposure to the sun. The study was conducted through a qualitative, phenomenological approach, with the data analysed through the process …

Formal Supports Improve Qol For Parents Of Children With Disabilities: Systematic Review; And, Mothers Caring For A Child With A Disability Require Dynamic, Tailored Support Services To Return To Paid Work, Sylvana Pasini

Theses : Honours

Parents caring for a child with a disability (PCCD) may experience adverse effects on quality of life (QOL) due to role demands, hence it is important to evaluate available support services. This paper aims to systematically review current research examining the impact of formally provided, parent-focused emotional or informational interventions on QOL for parents caring for a child with a disability or chronic condition. Procedures: Electronic searches of five databases (2001 – 2011) were conducted and reviewed against the study eligibility criteria. All levels of evidence were included, and studies were evaluated against standard quality assessment criteria by two reviewers. …

The Inherent Tension Between Value Creation And Value Claiming During Bargaining Interactions, Charles B. Craver Jan 2011

The Inherent Tension Between Value Creation And Value Claiming During Bargaining Interactions, Charles B. Craver

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

When individuals negotiate, they must initially use the Information Stage to create value by discussing the different issues to be addressed and by exploring the interests underlying those items. They must be willing to disclose their basic interests if progress is to be made, but they are usually not entirely candid for strategic purposes. They may over-state the degree to which they want items they think the other side values and under-state the degree to which they want items they believe the other side does not value. They then move into the Distributive Stage to decide how their joint surplus …

The Influence Of Law And Economics On Law And Accounting: Two Steps Forward, One Step Back, Lawrence A. Cunningham Jan 2011

The Influence Of Law And Economics On Law And Accounting: Two Steps Forward, One Step Back, Lawrence A. Cunningham

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

Theory can have profound effects on practice, some intended and desirable, others unintended and undesirable. That's the story of the influence the field of law and economics has had on the domain of law and accounting. That influence comes primarily from agency theory and modern finance theory, specifically through the efficient capital market hypothesis and capital asset pricing model. Those theories have forged considerable change in federal securities regulation, accounting standard setting, state corporation law, and financial auditing. Affected areas include the nature of disclosure, the measure of financial concepts, the limits of shareholder protection, and the scope of auditor …

Good Deficits: Protecting The Public Interest From Deficit Hysteria, Neil H. Buchanan Jan 2011

Good Deficits: Protecting The Public Interest From Deficit Hysteria, Neil H. Buchanan

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

President Obama has come under increasingly fierce criticism for the size of the federal budget deficit, as both Democratic and Republican politicians loudly proclaim that federal spending should be cut. This article explains why such anti-deficit fervor is misguided and simplistic, and why, perhaps counter-intuitively, cutting government spending can hurt the country, rather than help it, in both the short run and the long run.

In the short run, cutting deficit spending can be disastrous to the economy, especially if the economy is already in decline. In addition, because the federal budget fails to separate spending that provides long-term benefits …

‘They Saw A Protest’: Cognitive Illiberalism And The Speech-Conduct Distinction, Donald Braman, Dan M. Kahan, David A. Hoffman, Danieli Evans, Jeffrey J. Rachlinski Jan 2011

‘They Saw A Protest’: Cognitive Illiberalism And The Speech-Conduct Distinction, Donald Braman, Dan M. Kahan, David A. Hoffman, Danieli Evans, Jeffrey J. Rachlinski

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

“Cultural cognition” refers to the unconscious influence of individuals’ group commitments on their perceptions of legally consequential facts. We conducted an experiment to assess the impact of cultural cognition on perceptions of facts relevant to distinguishing constitutionally protected “speech” from unprotected “conduct.” Study subjects viewed a video of a political demonstration. Half the subjects believed that the demonstrators were protesting abortion outside of an abortion clinic, and the other half that the demonstrators were protesting the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy outside a campus recruitment facility. Subjects of opposing cultural outlooks who were assigned to the same experimental condition …

Randomizing Law, Michael B. Abramowicz, Ian Ayers, Yair Listokin Jan 2011

Randomizing Law, Michael B. Abramowicz, Ian Ayers, Yair Listokin

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

Governments should embrace randomized trials to estimate the efficacy of different laws and regulations. Just as random assignment of treatments is the most powerful method of testing for the causal impact of pharmaceuticals, randomly assigning individuals or firms to different legal rules can help resolve uncertainty about the consequential impacts of law. We explain why randomized testing is likely to produce better information than nonrandom evaluation of legal policies and offer guidelines for conducting legal experimentation successfully, considering a variety of obstacles, including ethical ones. Randomization will not be useful for all policies, but once government gains better experience with …

The Inducement Standard Of Patentability, Michael B. Abramowicz, John F. Duffy Jan 2011

The Inducement Standard Of Patentability, Michael B. Abramowicz, John F. Duffy

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

In Graham v. John Deere, the Supreme Court explained that patent law’s nonobviousness doctrine is meant to restrict the award of patents only to “those inventions which would not be disclosed or devised but for the inducement of a patent.” This Article argues that this inducement standard, largely ignored in practice, should serve as the doctrinal polestar. Such an approach would provide a solid economic foundation for the patentability standard and would align patent law with the many other fields of regulatory law that currently apply economic analysis in determining the scope and content of regulation. The Article also offers …

Problems In Climate Change And Human Rights, Dinah L. Shelton

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

This "case study" was intended to be included in Anton & Shelton, Environmental Problems and Human Rights (Cambridge, 2011), but space limitations forced its omission from the printed text. The link between adverse impacts of climate change and human rights was pushed to the fore recently by a 2005 petition by Sheila Watt-Cloutier on behalf of the Inuit people of the Artic regions to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights. Human Rights challenges to harmful climate change activities and impacts have also been launched in a number of national courts. In Nigeria and Australia substantive and procedural rights have been …

Problems In Environmental Protection And Human Rights: A Human Right To The Environment, Dinah L. Shelton Jan 2011

Problems In Environmental Protection And Human Rights: A Human Right To The Environment, Dinah L. Shelton

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

This "case study" was intended to be included in Anton & Shelton, Environmental Problems and Human Rights (Cambridge, 2011), but space limitations forced its omission from the printed text. The assertion of a human right to a healthy environment has persisted over the last 40 years. Here we examine the international guarantees and national guarantees that have developed. We also look at moves toward a Declaration on Human Rights and the Environment.

Problems In Human Rights And Large Dams, Dinah L. Shelton, Donald K. Anton Jan 2011

Problems In Human Rights And Large Dams, Dinah L. Shelton, Donald K. Anton

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

This "case study" was intended to be included in Anton & Shelton, Environmental Problems and Human Rights (Cambridge, 2011), but space limitations forced its omission from the printed text. Among large infrastructure projects, damming rivers to provide hydroelectric power have been the source of considerable conflict between governments and the people who are affected by such projects, especially those forced to relocate. In many instances dams are built in pristine natural areas, destroying or degrading nature reserves, indigenous lands and/or archaeological sites. Increasing opposition to large dams has resulted in national and international litigation, as well as substantial changes in …

Encroaching On Freedoms? Values Related To Freedom And Readiness To Accept Social Marketing Activities In Australia And Japanese Students, Kaoru Nosaka Jan 2011

Encroaching On Freedoms? Values Related To Freedom And Readiness To Accept Social Marketing Activities In Australia And Japanese Students, Kaoru Nosaka

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Do Australian and Japanese university students feel that social marketing is encroaching on their freedoms or empowering them? For example, how do they react to social marketing messages such as ‘Don’t Drink and Drive’ and ‘Reduce, Reuse, Recycle’? Social marketing activities include advocating for environmental change, laws, and regulations as well as making recommendations to individuals to change behaviours to promote the good of society; however, some people believe that such activities are attempts to control people, infringing upon their individual freedom. While behavioural models and theories have recognised the influence of an individual’s predisposition towards a recommended behaviour (such …

Enhancing The Teaching And Learning Of Computational Estimation In Year 6, Paula Mildenhall Jan 2011

Enhancing The Teaching And Learning Of Computational Estimation In Year 6, Paula Mildenhall

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

There have been repeated calls for computational estimation to have a more prominent position in mathematics teaching and learning but there is still little evidence that quality time is being spent on this topic. Estimating numerical quantities is a useful skill for people to be able to use in their everyday lives in order to meet their personal needs. It is also accepted that number sense is an important component of mathematics learning (McIntosh, Reys, Reys, Bana, & Farrell, 1997; Paterson, 2004) and that computational estimation is an important part of number sense (Edwards, 1984; Markovits & Sowder, 1988; Schoen, …

Internet Use And Its Impact On Secondary School Students In Chiang Mai, Thailand, Kesaraporn Wanajak Jan 2011

Internet Use And Its Impact On Secondary School Students In Chiang Mai, Thailand, Kesaraporn Wanajak

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Internet addiction (IA) is a relatively new field of academic inquiry. Empirical studies suggest that IA, like other well researched addictive behaviours, has an effect on many aspects of a person‟s life, including academic/work performance, relationships, and physical and mental health (Goldberg, 1996; Young, 1996, 1998). Evidence of IA has been suggested by the findings that some Internet users spend increasingly longer periods of time online and experience withdrawal symptoms when offline. Those preoccupied with Internet-related activities may neglect exercise, family and social activities (Kim et al., 2010; Nalwa & Anand, 2003; Seo, Kang, & Yom, 2009; S. Yang & …

Structure Strategy Use In Children's Comprehension Of Expository Texts, John V. Holsgrove Jan 2011

Structure Strategy Use In Children's Comprehension Of Expository Texts, John V. Holsgrove

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This study reviewed a body of literature largely written between the mid 1970s and 1990s that was concerned with the rhetorical structure of written expository text and its relationship to memory and comprehension. This dissertation follows from an argument that the earlier research often confused memory and comprehension and that it was limited in its attempt to clarify the relationship between text structure and reading comprehension. The current study sought to provide a fuller description of the manner in which schoolchildren of different ages and abilities employ rhetorical structure in the comprehension process. In contrast to the earlier research this …

Auditor Stress: Antecedents And Relationships To Audit Quality, Mohd Nazli Mohd Nor Jan 2011

Auditor Stress: Antecedents And Relationships To Audit Quality, Mohd Nazli Mohd Nor

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Research on Reduced Audit Quality Practices (RAQP) has consistently shown serious negative consequences in the auditing profession. It has found that under certain pressure levels, auditors tend to engage in RAQP. However, most of the previous studies that had investigated RAQP failed to examine RAQP from a stress model perspective which incorporates stressors, stress measures and stress consequences into the model and to measure the interactions among these constructs. Previous research has mainly focused on the direct effect of stressors (e.g., time budget pressure, leadership styles, individual personality etc.) on RAQP; there is no single investigation that has simultaneously examined …
