Investigating The Role Of The Internet In Women And Minority Stem Participation: A Case Study Of Two Florida Engineering Programs, Arland Nguema Ndong
Investigating The Role Of The Internet In Women And Minority Stem Participation: A Case Study Of Two Florida Engineering Programs, Arland Nguema Ndong
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Despite our awareness of the fascination modern humans have with the Internet, little is known about how and why colleges and universities create and maintain Websites. At the most general level, in this case study, I hypothesize that university Websites serve as communication and marketing tools in attracting students. At the most specific level, I postulate that civil engineering programs with Web pages depicting images of women and minorities would be more successful in recruiting and retaining women and students of color than civil engineering programs with Web pages displaying fewer or no images of women and minorities. The primary …
Prophylactic, Risk-Reducing Surgery In Unaffected Brca-Positive Women: Quality Of Life, Sexual Functioning And Psychological Well-Being, Sharon Tollin
Prophylactic, Risk-Reducing Surgery In Unaffected Brca-Positive Women: Quality Of Life, Sexual Functioning And Psychological Well-Being, Sharon Tollin
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Women with an inherited BRCA mutation are at significantly increased risk for breast and ovarian cancer, often diagnosed at an earlier age than sporadic cancers. Prophylactic surgery, with bilateral mastectomy and/or bilateral prophylactic salpingo-oophorectomy, represents an option for risk reduction. The purpose of this study was to explore quality of life, sexual functioning, menopausal symptoms, psychological well-being and satisfaction with risk management decisions for BRCA-positive women ages 21 to 50 (M = 38.4 years), without a personal history of cancer. A web-based, cross-sectional study design was utilized to compare women opting for any prophylactic surgery (n = 160) with those …

Innovative Environments: The Equity Culture Audit: An Essential Tool For Improving Schools In Kentucky, Roger C. Cleveland, Norman W. Powell, Sterling Saddler, Tiffany G. Tyler
Journal of Excellence in College Teaching and Learning
In the last twenty years, the state of Kentucky has passed legislative initiatives to address the education needs of its children. Even with the implementation of the progressive laws that were passed, many formidable challenges still confront education delivery in the State. This article introduces and describes the utilization of "the Equity-Culture audit" as an invaluable tool for data collection and school culture assessment. The authors examine the significance of the role played by leadership in the creation and maintenance of a school's culture. In addition, there is a discussion of how systemic change in districts and schools can be …
The Beauty Premium In The Academic World: A Cross-Cultural Perspective, Ya’Arit Bokek-Cohen, Nitza Davidovich
The Beauty Premium In The Academic World: A Cross-Cultural Perspective, Ya’Arit Bokek-Cohen, Nitza Davidovich
Journal of Excellence in College Teaching and Learning
A majority of studies on the beauty premium of college professors have been conducted in Western countries, mainly in the United States and Canada. The present paper focuses on the influence of professors' physical attractiveness on their teaching ratings awarded by three ethno-cultural student populations (native Israelis, FSU immigrants, and Ethiopian immigrants) at a large public college in Israel. We asked the participants to look at photographs of attractive professors (rated in a previous study) and rate the quality of their teaching, based solely on the photographs. It was found that both female and male professors were awarded a beauty …
Student Advice For Online Mba Accounting Courses, Barbara Scofield, Robert Walsh
Student Advice For Online Mba Accounting Courses, Barbara Scofield, Robert Walsh
Journal of Excellence in College Teaching and Learning
Online learning has grown exponentially over the past ten years (Bryant, Kahle & Schafer, 2005). Prior research in the area of online education (online accounting education specifically) has identified many areas for research, including course development and administration, time requirements for students and teachers, and processes in traditional campus teaching. This large body of research indicates that all students need some degree of self-direction and intrinsic motivation (Irizarry, 2002). With regard to student learning styles, (Dille and Mezack,1991,and Gibson and Graff, 1992) indicated that successful distance learning students have less need to relate to other students in the educational environment, …
A Cognitive Inventory Of Business Students, Dale Krueger
A Cognitive Inventory Of Business Students, Dale Krueger
Journal of Excellence in College Teaching and Learning
Different cognitive-psychological assessments in higher education can help students to understand their own thinking and behavior patterns and help them to plan and have a successful career. In the 1970's Mintzberg drew attention to two different styles on thinking: the use of the left side of the brain versus the right side of the brain. According to Mintzberg the analytical side of brain, which is the left side, focuses on planning. The holistic side of brain is the right side and it focuses on management. Until the 1970's the trend in business was to favor analytical thinking as opposed to …
Academic Motivation And Student Development During The Transition To College, Larry Grabau
Academic Motivation And Student Development During The Transition To College, Larry Grabau
Journal of Excellence in College Teaching and Learning
Academic motivation has been shown to be related to retention to the sophomore year, and the goal orientation model of academic motivation has been widely evaluated in school transition settings. Academic motivation consists of self-efficacy, positive attributions, intrinsic motivation, and goal orientations. Mastery goal orientation focuses on new skills and competencies, while performance goals focus on competition with others and earning recognition. A performance orientation can be performance approach (potentially adaptive) or performance avoidance (a social defense mechanism). Academic motivation can be severely challenged during school transitions; a defensive response to this challenge could result in maladaptive behaviors by first-year …
Online Test Presentation Modes, Student Self-Perceived Learning Styles, And Student Performance On Factual/Conceptual And Applied Problems, Yuejin Xu
Journal of Excellence in College Teaching and Learning
Online courses have created a different testing environment. A test in an online setting can be easily presented in multiple modes (i.e., all at once, one at a time). However, there are no established guidelines to date on how the test presentation modes should be used in an online test. Using a sample of sixty-five undergraduate students, this study examined if test presentation modes (i.e., all at once, one at a time), student self-perceived learning styles (i.e., surface style, deep style), and types of test problems (i.e., factual/conceptual questions, applied questions) have an effect on student achievement in four unit …

A Pilot Study Of Cultural-Based Service-Learning: What Did Undergraduate Students Learn From Elementary School Teachers In An Urban Public School District?, Lori Simons, Nancy Hirshinger-Blank, Elizabeth Williams, Kimyette Willis, Lauren Camiollo, Cassandra Dry, Courtney Floyd, Brittany Russell
Journal of Excellence in College Teaching and Learning
This article describes what undergraduate students learned from school teachers involved in a cultural based service-learning program. Forty-four undergraduate students enrolled in an educational psychology course at a private, metropolitan University were paired with 30 teachers and provided tutoring and mentoring activities to the children in their classrooms over the course of the semester at the West or East School located in Chester, Pennsylvania. The results from a preliminary survey indicate that undergraduate students increase their civic action attitudes, problem-solving skills, multigroup and ethnic identity, community self-efficacy, and academic and community engagement from the beginning to the end of the …

A Comparison Study Of Project-Based-Learning In Upper-Division Engineering Education, Ron Ulseth, Bart Johnson, Rebecca Bates
Integrated Engineering Department Publications
A new model for engineering education was launched in January 2010 in northeastern Minnesota. The Iron Range Engineering (IRE) model is a project-based-learning (PBL) methodology that focuses on producing graduates with integrated technical and professional knowledge and competencies. A unique and important element of the IRE model has 100% of IRE student learning taking place in the context of industry projects. Students at IRE are upper-division engineering students who transferred from Minnesota community college lower-division engineering programs. To understand the impact that IRE methodology may have on preparing engineers with the competencies needed for the future workplace, a comparison study …

Applying Maslow's Hierarchy To The Parent/Teacher Relationship, Deanna L. Keith Dr., Lucinda S, Spaulding
Applying Maslow's Hierarchy To The Parent/Teacher Relationship, Deanna L. Keith Dr., Lucinda S, Spaulding
Faculty Publications and Presentations
We examine the parent/teacher relationship through Maslow’s (1943) Hierarchy of Needs, which theorizes that physiological and safety needs must be met before someone feels a sense of belonging, and that sense of belonging and esteem are needed for self-actualization (reaching one’s full potential). We discuss ways to meet the basic needs of parents with the purpose of fostering positive collaborative partnerships between parents and special education teachers.

Mentoring Directors As A Strategy To Improve Quality In Early Childhood Programs, Mccormick Center For Early Childhood Leadership
McCormick Center for Early Childhood Leadership Publications
Mentoring and coaching are well established professional development strategies. These relationship-based strategies are often used in conjunction with traditional instructional practices. Most research in this area, however, has focused on the use of mentoring or coaching with teachers to improve teaching practices. This evaluation study conducted for the Ontario Government was designed to determine the extent to which the Mentoring Pairs for Child Care Project achieved its primary goal of enhancing quality in early learning programs in Ontario, Canada by increasing the administrative knowledge and skills of center directors (supervisors).

The Wage Gap Revisited: An Investigation Of Salary Request Differences Among Black-White And Male-Female Workers, Andrea L. Briggs
College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations
This study examined wage gaps in the workforce and discussed explanations for why these gaps exist. Specifically, this study investigated the differences between men and women and Blacks and Whites in the amount of salary requested for a new job. Current worker data from an international job board was examined. Workers were Black or White males or females, who were at least 25 years of age and had at least one full-time job. Only annual salary data was used in analysis. When controlling for education and experience, results supported the hypotheses predicting current salary differences between Whites and Blacks and …

Sex Differences In Mechanisms And Outcome Of Neonatal Hypoxia-Ischemia In Rodent Models: Implications For Sex-Specific Neuroprotection In Clinical Neonatal Practice, Courtney A. Hill, Roslyn Holly Fitch
Sex Differences In Mechanisms And Outcome Of Neonatal Hypoxia-Ischemia In Rodent Models: Implications For Sex-Specific Neuroprotection In Clinical Neonatal Practice, Courtney A. Hill, Roslyn Holly Fitch
Open Access Author Fund Awardees' Articles
Clinical findings show that male infants with hypoxic-ischemic injury (HI) fare more poorly than matched females on cognitive outcomes. Rodent models of neonatal hypoxia-ischemia support this difference, with data showing that perinatal brain injury leads to long-term behavioral deficits primarily in male rodents and in female rodents treated with early androgens. Results support the idea that sex-specific gonadal hormones may modulate developmental response to injury and dovetail with overwhelming evidence of developmental androgen effects on typical brain morphology and behavior. However, mechanisms underlying sex differences in response to early brain injury may be more complicated. Specifically, activation of cell death …
Compassion And Coalitions: A Review Of Reshaping The Work Family Debate: Why Men And Class Matter By Joan Williams, Carolyn Shapiro
Compassion And Coalitions: A Review Of Reshaping The Work Family Debate: Why Men And Class Matter By Joan Williams, Carolyn Shapiro
All Faculty Scholarship
Reshaping the Work-Family Debate: Why Men and Class Matter by Joan Williams is illuminating, intellectually challenging, and insightful. It is not, however, a typical law professor book. Neither academic inquiry nor policy analysis (although it contains elements of both), Reshaping the Work-Family Debate is more of a manifesto. Williams seeks measurable and meaningful change in the family and work lives of Americans, even if that change is imperfect or incomplete, and she sees theoretical or ideological rigidity as one obstacle to such change.
Williams believes that coalition-building is essential to addressing the work family challenges she identifies. Although she has …
Pragmatism And Meaning: Assessing The Message Of Star Trek: The Original Series, Anne Collins Smith, Owen M. Smith
Pragmatism And Meaning: Assessing The Message Of Star Trek: The Original Series, Anne Collins Smith, Owen M. Smith
Faculty Publications
The original Star Trek television series purported to depict a future in which such evils as sexism and racism do not exist, and intelligent beings from numerous planets live in a condition of peace and mutual benefit. As many scholars have observed, from a standpoint of contemporary theoretical analysis, Star Trek: The Original Series contains many elements that are inimical to the utopia it claims to depict and thus undermine its supposed message. A different perspective may be gained by drawing on the American pragmatist movement, in which the value of an idea is judged by its effectiveness, how it …

Some Issues In Compensation Management: Two Case Studies For Teaching, Rajiv Kumar, Jacob D. Vakkayil
Organization Management Journal
We report our experiences of teaching compensation management using two short case studies that we developed to help students examine key concepts in an integrated manner. We note that cases anchored in the socio-economic context can evoke deeper discussions due to participants’ contextual familiarity. We also highlight the role of instructors in directing class discussions to relevant themes in a creative manner so that participants can see less obvious issues and interconnections among issues.

Top-Level Communication: Behind The Scenes With Famous French Spin Doctor Jacques Seguela, Christophe Haag, Jean-Francois Coget, Tessa Melkonian
Organization Management Journal
This article explores the practice of spin doctoring through the point of view of a practitioner and possible differences between France and America in that practice. We do so by reporting and analyzing an exclusive interview with famous French spin doctor Jacques Seguela, VP of Havas, one of the world’s largest advertising and communications groups. Seguela was involved in 20 political campaigns in France and abroad, advising, among others, French President Francois Mitterrand in 1981, and Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barack in 1999. He still advises a number of politicians and top-level executives worldwide. In the interview, Seguela talks about …
