Strategic Management In Nonprofit Mental Health Service Organizations: Understanding Processes And Impact On Performance, Jennifer Schurer Coldiron
Strategic Management In Nonprofit Mental Health Service Organizations: Understanding Processes And Impact On Performance, Jennifer Schurer Coldiron
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
Managing the performance of social service-providing nonprofit organizations: NPOs) has become more and more complex in the past few decades as executives have had to cope with increasing competition, demands from a diversified set of stakeholders, rapidly changing technologies, and mounting scrutiny from funders and consumers. To help reduce the complexity of strategic management, organizations have been encouraged to adopt formal strategy formation processes, such as highly-structured strategic planning models. However, there are no demonstrated "best practices" or conclusive evidence of the utility of formal strategy formation within the nonprofit sector. The stakes of mismanagement are high for the organizations …
Assessment For Improvement In Higher Education: Faculty Perception Of And Participation In Program Assessment, Serap Emil
Dissertations and Theses
Driven by issues of accountability, the assessment movement in higher education has gained significant momentum in recent years. However, successful implementation of assessment processes varies radically across institutions and organizational units. A key issue is faculty engagement. This qualitative case study explored factors that impact faculty participation in a professional school assessment initiative. Findings indicate that factors related to individual faculty characteristics (e.g., career preparation, knowledge, beliefs, and attitudes) and institutional characteristics (e.g., leadership, resources, reward structures, work environment, and technology) influence faculty members engagement in assessment activities. To support faculty adoption of and participation in assessment efforts, leaders need …
Communicating Vision : A Linguistic Analysis Of Leadership Speeches, Debrah J. Martin
Communicating Vision : A Linguistic Analysis Of Leadership Speeches, Debrah J. Martin
Dissertations
Leadership literature contains ample recommendations that leaders need to have a vision and be competent in visioning. A small subset of that literature recommends that leaders communicate their visions. There are few resources, however, that guide leaders how to communicate their visions. This study consists of an application of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), including Genre Theory, and an extension of SFL, Appraisal Theory, on four visionary speeches in the field of political discourse—Lincoln‘s Gettysburg Address, Churchill‘s ―We Shall Fight on the Beaches,‖ Kennedy‘s inaugural, and Martin Luther King Jr.‘s ―I Have a Dream‖—to discover how these leaders were able to …
Employee Age Differences In Formal Performance Feedback Reactions: Examining The Effects Of Perceived Valence, Content, And Delivery, Gabriela Burlacu
Employee Age Differences In Formal Performance Feedback Reactions: Examining The Effects Of Perceived Valence, Content, And Delivery, Gabriela Burlacu
Dissertations and Theses
As the nature of work is rapidly changing, organizations in developed nations all over the world are experiencing shifts in the age composition of their workforces. These changes, which include an aging workforce that is becoming increasingly age-diverse, indicate that organizational researchers and practitioners need to be better aware of how age differences manifest themselves in the workplace and what implications this has for effective employee management. In the current study it is proposed that employees of different ages react differently to various elements of a formal performance feedback event. Specifically, Carstensen's developmental Socio-emotional Selectivity Theory is used as a …

The study employed a quantitative survey research design that identified usage of strategies in the areas of admissions, retention, curricular changes, marketing, external stakeholders, academic quality, commitment to mission, and strength of organizational leadership.
The research focused on four questions:
1. What are the demographic characteristics among respondents within the sample?
2. What enrollment models are currently in place at CCCU member institutions?
3. What strategies and programs are …
Exploiting Borders: The Political Economy Of Local Backlash Against Undocumented Immigrants, Jamie Longazel, Benjamin Fleury-Steiner
Exploiting Borders: The Political Economy Of Local Backlash Against Undocumented Immigrants, Jamie Longazel, Benjamin Fleury-Steiner
Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work Faculty Publications
Four years prior to Arizona's passage of one of the most far-reaching pieces of anti-Latino immigrant legislation signed into law in decades,3 demands to "seal off the border"4 were being made thousands of miles from the U.S.-Mexico divide. In 2006, Hazleton, Pennsylvania, passed equally harsh legislation aimed at keeping undocumented immigrants out of their community. During this time, commentators described the local backlash in Hazleton and other small cities across the United States as akin to "the opening of a deep and profound fissure in the American landscape" 5 wherein "all immigration politics is local." 6 Yet, as the so-called …

Partner Capture In Public International Organizations, Christopher G. Bradley
Partner Capture In Public International Organizations, Christopher G. Bradley
Law Faculty Scholarly Articles
A sharp rise of public-private partnerships is changing the way the United Nations and other public international organizations work. Organizations eagerly embrace wealthy, experienced partners, such as major foundations and corporations, in order to fund ambitious projects. But safeguards against potential problems have not kept pace with partnership activities. Looking to fundamental principles of public choice and political economy well-known in the U.S. administrative law context, this Article develops a multifaceted notion of “partner capture” to describe the dangers of this expansion in partnership activities for the U.N. and similar organizations. The dangers include agenda distortion, intra-organizational rivalries, reputational damage, …

Management Of Change To Ensure Is Success: A Longitudinal Study, Pauline Ash Ray, Wenli Wang, Jerry Cha-Jan Chang, Geoffrey Hubona
Management, Entrepreneurship and Technology Faculty Research
This paper aims to understand the effect of management of change on the success of information system (IS) implementation. Drawing on change management research and self-determination theory, a research model is developed. Data collected from a longitudinal field survey before, during, and after an enterprise-wide IS implementation are analyzed to test the proposed hypotheses. The results indicate that management of change can be used to increase readiness for change and end-user computing satisfaction during and after the implementation. Readiness for change positively impacts satisfaction during an implementation but not after. Contrary to the literature, No significant relationship exists between resistance …

A Cultural-Historical Activity Theory Analysis Of Factors Affecting Technology Adoption By Higher Education Program Faculty, Rolando Jose Marquez
A Cultural-Historical Activity Theory Analysis Of Factors Affecting Technology Adoption By Higher Education Program Faculty, Rolando Jose Marquez
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Background: Researchers have revealed that among the reasons provided as barriers to the adoption of technology are: lack of technology resources, time, professional development and support (National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education, 1997; Parker, 1996; Sheldon & Jones, 1996; Sheldon & Jones, 1996; NCATE, 1997; Shelly, Gunter & Gunter, 2010, U.S. Congress, 1995). Several models used to explain the usage of technology within education such as the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) have been somewhat ineffective in explaining or providing a holistic view of the factors that come into play when examining technology infusion and diffusion as they …

An Evaluation Of The Usability Of A Computerized Decision Support System For Nursing Homes, M. Fossum, M. Ehnfors, Ann L. Fruhling, A. Ehrenberg
Interdisciplinary Informatics Faculty Publications
Background: Computerized decision support systems (CDSSs) have the potential to significantly improve the quality of nursing care of older people by enhancing the decision making of nursing personnel. Despite this potential, health care organizations have been slow to incorporate CDSSs into nursing home practices.
Objective: This study describes facilitators and barriers that impact the ability of nursing personnel to effectively use a clinical CDSS for planning and treating pressure ulcers (PUs) and malnutrition and for following the suggested risk assessment guidelines for the care of nursing home residents.
Methods: We employed a qualitative descriptive design using varied …

Overview And Guidance On Agile Development In Large Organizations, Jordan B. Barlow, Justin Scott Giboney, Mark Jeffrey Keith, David W. Wilson, Ryan Schuetzler, Paul Benjamin Lowry, Anthony Vance
Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis Faculty Publications
A continual debate surrounds the effectiveness of agile software development practices. Some organizations adopt agile practices to become more competitive, improve processes, and reduce costs. Other organizations are skeptical about whether agile development is beneficial. Large organizations face an additional challenge in integrating agile practices with existing standards and business processes. To examine the effects of agile development practices in large organizations, we review and integrate scientific literature and theory on agile software development. We further organize our theory and observations into a framework with guidelines for large organizations considering agile methodologies. Based on this framework, we present recommendations that …
A Public Marriage: A Comparison Of Organizational Change Communication Between Two Cultures Involved In A Municipal Government Facilities Merger, Sharon Michaela Dollar
A Public Marriage: A Comparison Of Organizational Change Communication Between Two Cultures Involved In A Municipal Government Facilities Merger, Sharon Michaela Dollar
Communication Theses - Archive
This study compares the change communication of two public organizations (a City and School District) during a municipal government facility merger as well as the effects of the merger on the organizations' cultures. It is unique in that the organizations merged only their facilities and not their business operations or organizational cultures. Therefore, the two organizations remained distinctly separate institutions. Data for this study consisted of 14 in-depth interviews. The results revealed that due to the separation in communication before the change, the School District had less formal communication with their employees as did the City. The limited communication resulted …
Religion, Politics, And Polity Replication: Religious Differences In Preferences For Institutional Design, Joshua D. Ambrosius
Religion, Politics, And Polity Replication: Religious Differences In Preferences For Institutional Design, Joshua D. Ambrosius
Political Science Faculty Publications
This article presents a theory of polity replication in which religious congregants prefer institutions in other realms of society, including the state, to be structured like their church. Polities, or systems of church governance and administration, generally take one of three forms: episcopal (hierarchical/centralized), presbyterian (collegial/regional), or congregational (autonomous/decentralized). When asked to cast a vote to shape institutions in a centralizing or decentralizing manner, voters are influenced by organizational values shaped by their respective religious traditions‘ polity structures. Past social scientific scholarship has neglected to explicitly connect religious affiliation, defined by polity, with members‘ stances on institutional design. However, previous …
The Importance Of Leadership And Culture In Mergers, Aravind Swaminathan
The Importance Of Leadership And Culture In Mergers, Aravind Swaminathan
CMC Senior Theses
The purpose of this paper is to show how leadership and culture are critical factors in organizational change. The vehicle through which this point is proved is by
analyzing the organizational change processes of mergers, as mergers involve
leadership and culture. Successful mergers are very rare, and it is hypothesized
that not enough attention is paid to leadership and culture during mergers. This
paper analyzes many of the factors that related to leadership and culture, such as
transparency, trust, communication, and vision. Not only does this paper analyze
these topics, but it also examines and applies a successful change strategy, …
Exploring Increased Productivity Through Employee Engagement, Wayne K. Richards Jr.
Exploring Increased Productivity Through Employee Engagement, Wayne K. Richards Jr.
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Disengaged employees cost U.S. companies billions of dollars annually in lowered productivity, a cost which has been compounded by the difficult economic situations in the country. The potential for increasing productivity through increased employee engagement was examined in this study. Using personal engagement theory and the theory of planned behavior, the purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore how the experiences of salaried aerospace employees affected productivity and the financial performance of an organization. Interviews were conducted with a purposive sample of 20 aerospace employees whose responses were codified and analyzed to identify themes. The analysis indicated that (a) …
Regionalism, Geography, And The International Legal Imagination, Carl Landauer
Regionalism, Geography, And The International Legal Imagination, Carl Landauer
Chicago Journal of International Law
Despite international law's identity as focused on spatial relations, it has long been dominated by a temporal, narrative imagination. This article argues for an increased spatial conception of international law, but one that is also culturally and temporally enriched. It begins with a section called "Regionalism without the Region," which describes how efforts at emphasizing the region in international law are often empty of regional content-that is, of true locality. Then, in a section on "GlobaliZation without the Globe," the article describes how globaliZation studies have focused on globaliZation as a process-that is, on the "ization" rather than the "globe" …

An Exploration Of The Accreditation Self-Study Process From The Perspectives Of Organizational Effectiveness, Troy Lee Roland
An Exploration Of The Accreditation Self-Study Process From The Perspectives Of Organizational Effectiveness, Troy Lee Roland
Theses and Dissertations
A total of 22 sanctions were issued in 2009 for noncompliance of the accreditation standards by the Junior College Division of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). The most common reason for these sanctions is not conducting program reviews. Another major cause is for not integrating organizational planning or using assessment results, and not correcting institutional deficiencies with governing boards. Yet, despite these warnings, many institutions continue to receive such sanctions. Models for organizational effectiveness could help institutions of higher education prepare for and become compliant with accreditation standards. This case study involved the development of an assessment …

Systems Change: A Study Of Response To Intervention Model Implementation At Two Elementary School In Southern California, Nancy Teola Barker
Theses and Dissertations
This qualitative comparative study examined three core components of RtI² implementation at two purposefully selected elementary schools in one county in Southern California. The researcher interviewed principals, teachers, and support staff regarding leadership attributes, skills and behaviors perceived as critical, professional development opportunities needed for, and the new roles for teachers and support staff in the implementation of the RtI² model at their particular site. The interviews revealed that the most critical behavior was a leader's knowledge of curriculum, instruction, and assessment. Five additional leadership behaviors were identified to a lesser degree. Four of these behaviors were identified as "second-order" …
Identity As The Foundation For Change In School Systems, Amy E. Scalia
Identity As The Foundation For Change In School Systems, Amy E. Scalia
Theses and Dissertations
Citizens, politicians, scholars, and educators agree that the nation's educational system is failing to serve our youth. Despite energy, resources, research, and readiness, schools remain unchanged and ineffective. This study builds on existing research in the corporate landscape about the role identity plays in an organization's capability to change. The school system has not made a distinct statement about what it stands for. The researcher hypothesized that a clear identity will better prepare the educational system and schools within it to implement change effectively. The study explored the question, "Does a clear identity better equip a school to implement change?" …

This study explored how and why teachers self-organize to help students living in poverty. Schools have characteristics of complex adaptive systems, the primary one being a capacity to change and adapt to its environment through self-organizing. The main focus of the study was how teachers in urban elementary schools create and utilize self-organizing to meet the needs of their students. The research investigated the experiences of teachers who help students living in poverty. This study highlighted committed, caring teachers breaking rules and taking a stand for children caught up economic injustice. The teachers in this study are participants in a …
Organizational Change Effectiveness A Case Study In Customer-Alignment Structures For Employee Engagement And Service Delivery, Emily C. Logan
Organizational Change Effectiveness A Case Study In Customer-Alignment Structures For Employee Engagement And Service Delivery, Emily C. Logan
Theses and Dissertations
Although organizational changes are common in business, few of these changes are decided based upon clearly defined organizational goals (Hilmer & Donaldson, 1996). Making structural changes may not be the best approach to improve performance, given that organizational changes are disruptive to the organization (Day, Lawson, & Leslie, 2003). Instead of following prevalent management fads, organizational leaders need to evaluate carefully any potential changes for their situation and objectives before embarking on a disruptive change. The purpose of this study is to determine the effectiveness of an organizational change in which the defined goals were to create more empowered employees …

An Autoethnographic Case Study Of A Manager Experiencing Professional Transition, Jean Ann Larson
Theses and Dissertations
This autoethnographic case study explores how one manager navigated a period of significant professional transition as a senior healthcare executive. The intent is to study how managerial leaders, which is Peter Vaill's (1996) definition of managers of people and organizations, can transition and develop behaviors and ways of thinking and being, in order to stay effective and learn and grow while experiencing significant changes. The study focuses on behaviors, practices and conditions that can be employed during times of transition in order to enable learning and professional development from the experience of transition. Using an autoethnographic approach, the case study …
The Relationship Between Spirituality And Personality, Kimberly C. Koessel
The Relationship Between Spirituality And Personality, Kimberly C. Koessel
Dissertations
Current literature is lacking a theoretical framework for understanding spirituality within the context of psychological functioning. Despite empirical support for the potential psychological benefits of spirituality, conceptual differences underlying definitions and measurements of spirituality have impeded theory development. Additionally, very few studies have explored spirituality from a secular perspective. The purpose of this dissertation is to examine the relationship between spirituality and personality within a population of undergraduate and graduate students. This research obtains sample data through a demographic questionnaire, a measure of humanistic spirituality, and an inventory of normal personality. Quantitative statistical analyses are employed to explore a variety …
