Dysglycemia Induces Abnormal Circadian Blood Pressure Variability, Sivarajan Kumarasamy, Kathirvel Gopalakrishnan, Dong Hyun Kim, Nader G. Abraham, William D. Johnson, Bina Joe, Alok K. Gupta Jan 2011

Dysglycemia Induces Abnormal Circadian Blood Pressure Variability, Sivarajan Kumarasamy, Kathirvel Gopalakrishnan, Dong Hyun Kim, Nader G. Abraham, William D. Johnson, Bina Joe, Alok K. Gupta

Biochemistry and Microbiology

Background: Prediabetes (PreDM) in asymptomatic adults is associated with abnormal circadian blood pressure variability (abnormal CBPV).

Hypothesis: Systemic inflammation and glycemia influence circadian blood pressure variability.

Methods: Dahl salt-sensitive (S) rats (n = 19) after weaning were fed either an American (AD) or a standard (SD) diet. The AD (high-glycemic-index, high-fat) simulated customary human diet, provided daily overabundant calories which over time lead to body weight gain. The SD (low-glycemic-index, low-fat) mirrored desirable balanced human diet for maintaining body weight. Body weight and serum concentrations for fasting glucose (FG), adipokines (leptin and adiponectin), and proinflammatory cytokines [monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) …

Biodiesel Production From Crude Cottonseed Oil: An Optimization Process Using Response Surface Methodology, Xiaohu Fan, Xi Wang, Feng Chen Jan 2011

Biodiesel Production From Crude Cottonseed Oil: An Optimization Process Using Response Surface Methodology, Xiaohu Fan, Xi Wang, Feng Chen

Publications

Biodiesel, known as fatty acid methyl ester (FAME), was produced from crude cottonseed oil (triglycerides) by transesterification with methanol in the presence of sodium hydroxide. This process was optimized by applying factorial design and response surface methodology (RSM) with SAS and PSIPLOT programs. A second-order mathematical model was obtained to predict the yield as a function of methanol/oil molar ratio, catalyst concentration, reaction temperature, and rate of mixing. Based on ridge max analysis and RSM, as well as economic cost consideration, the practical optimal condition for the production of biodiesel was found to be: methanol/oil molar ratio, 7.9; temperature, 53 …

Can Law Improve Prevention And Treatment Of Cancer?, Roger Magnusson, Lawrence O. Gostin, David Studdert

O'Neill Institute Papers

The December 2011 issue of Public Health (the Journal of the Royal Society for Public Health) contains a symposium entitled: Legislate, Regulate, Litigate? Legal approaches to the prevention and treatment of cancer. This symposium explores the possibilities for using law and regulation – both internationally and at the national level – as the policy instrument for preventing and improving the treatment of cancer and other leading non-communicable diseases (NCDs). In this editorial, we argue that there is an urgent need for more legal scholarship on cancer and other leading NCDs, as well as greater dialogue between lawyers, public health practitioners …

An Ecological Analysis Of Social And Economic Influences On Black And White Infant Mortality Risk In Orange County, Fl, Littleton, Vanessa Lopez Jan 2011

An Ecological Analysis Of Social And Economic Influences On Black And White Infant Mortality Risk In Orange County, Fl, Littleton, Vanessa Lopez

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Black health disparities are a salient public health issue with blacks in every socioeconomic level at a greater health disadvantage than their white counterparts. In particular, disparity in infant mortality rates between blacks and whites have widened in recent decades to differentials never before experienced in the United States. Social ecologists investigating the myriad of individual and environmental risk factors have failed to fully account for the persistent differential. This study examines the relationships between individual and environmental influences on the health risk experienced by blacks, whites, as well as the differential between the two populations. This multi-level analysis was …

Suggestions for improvement for the NELIP included group walking, and incorporating more traditional foods into the meal plan. The …

Genetic Components To Worker Sterility In The Honey Bee, Apis Mellifera, Alanna Gabrielle Backx Jan 2011

Genetic Components To Worker Sterility In The Honey Bee, Apis Mellifera, Alanna Gabrielle Backx

Digitized Theses

The primary characteristic that defines eusocial species is reproductive division of labour. Honey bee (Apis mellifera) colonies typically have a single reproductive queen and thousands of sterile workers. Here, I review the factors affecting worker reproduction and then contrast the brain gene expression of workers considered either reproductively altruistic (sterile) or selfish (fecund) over a series of time points. I confirmed that although, theoretically, the genes that allow workers to reproduce must be expressed in order for them to do so, it is the environmental cues, such as nutrition and pheromones, that ultimately control worker reproductive status. I then identify …

Regulation Of Pancreatic Pdx1 And Downstream Target Genes After Exposure To Protein Restriction During Different Windows Of Pancreatic Development, Awatif Abuzgaia Jan 2011

Regulation Of Pancreatic Pdx1 And Downstream Target Genes After Exposure To Protein Restriction During Different Windows Of Pancreatic Development, Awatif Abuzgaia

Digitized Theses

Protein restriction (low protein, LP) during fetal and neonatal life has been shown in our laboratory to alter the normal development of the pancreas, resulting in predisposition to glucose intolerance and striking gender differences in key insulin signaling molecules. The objectives of this study were to examine the overall expression of Pdxl and its downstream target genes in young and adult rats (d21and d l 30) and to investigate the intrinsic molecular mechanisms that may be involved in the differentiation and function of P-cells when an insult such as dietary protein content is changed during different periods of early development. …

Female Adolescent Body Image And Success At School: A Grounded Theory Approach To Creation Of Administrative Best Practice, Erin K. Murphy

ETD Archive

At present, school administrators do not have necessary information to create a school environment where teenage girls unhappy with their bodies can experience success at school. This research surrounds three research questions: 1. How do adolescent girls' definitions of their bodies relate to their perception of their high school's climate? 2. How does the manner in which adolescent female girls define their bodies relate to their success in school? 3. What is the nature of adolescent girls' and high school administrators' perceptions of how adolescent girls' body image influences administrative practice? Four school administrators and ten high school girls were …

A Rat Model Of Sleep Deprivation Prior To Traumatic Brain Injury, Steve G. Soehnlen Jan 2011

A Rat Model Of Sleep Deprivation Prior To Traumatic Brain Injury, Steve G. Soehnlen

ETD Archive

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) has been called the "signature injury" of U.S. soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan. Soldiers undergo a variety of stressors during their tours of duty that could complicate recovery from TBI, one of which is sleep deprivation (SD). In this study, we sought to create a rat model exploring the effects of prior REM sleep deprivation (RSD) on recovery from TBI-induced sensorimotor and cognitive deficits. Rats were deprived of REM sleep before they underwent a controlled cortical impact (CCI) to mimic a TBI. Forelimb sensorimotor function, hindlimb motor function, forelimb motor function, and spatial learning were assessed …

Algea Suspension Dewatering With An Inclined Gravity Settler, Jing Hou Jan 2011

Algea Suspension Dewatering With An Inclined Gravity Settler, Jing Hou

ETD Archive

Biofuel has been studied for several decades as a feasible substitute for petroleum, which may solve the energy crisis. Having a high oil content and growth rate, algae biofuels have received lots of attention recently, and have been considered as one of the most promising technologies to reduce the dependence of fossil fuels. In the process of producing algae biofuel, the dewatering process constitutes a significant part of the cost of the algae biofuel, impeding progress towards large-scale commercial use. An inclined settler utilizes gravity to separate algae cells from the fluid, with little energy consumption. The separation ability of …

The Lurking Costs Of Green Technology Metals In A Global Market, Winfield J. Wilson Jan 2011

The Lurking Costs Of Green Technology Metals In A Global Market, Winfield J. Wilson

PEEL Alumni Scholarship

As the global market faces the challenge of responding to climate change, including how to convert to a green economy that uses renewable resources, it is critical to examine domestic and international legal frameworks implicated at various points in the life cycle of metallic ore resources employed in “clean” or “green” technology. Although the products themselves may or may not be environmentally-sound because of their source production or their transformation into waste at the end of their life, consumer demand for the green labeling will continue to drive the production of such technology. International law and policy frameworks must take …
