Examination Of Factors Contributing To The Achievement Gap Of Native American Students In Select School Districts In Michigan, Thomas R. Harwood
Examination Of Factors Contributing To The Achievement Gap Of Native American Students In Select School Districts In Michigan, Thomas R. Harwood
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Most of the studies on student achievement gaps involve the Black-White achievement gap due to the availability of significant sample populations in order to draw scientific conclusions from the analysis of the student achievement data. However, there are few empirical quantitative studies that analyze a similar gap in achievement between the Native American student and their White cohort. Such studies have been limited due to a small and isolated Native American population in regions across the nation. In Michigan, less than 1% of the student population in the schools is Native American. This study identified 20 select school districts (both …
No. 07: Rapid Urbanization And The Nutrition Transition In Southern Africa, Jonathan Crush, Bruce Frayne, Milla Mclachlan
No. 07: Rapid Urbanization And The Nutrition Transition In Southern Africa, Jonathan Crush, Bruce Frayne, Milla Mclachlan
African Food Security Urban Network
The nutrition transition, including the presence of malnutrition and obesity in poor urban populations (the so-called ‘double burden’ of disease), is occurring in Southern Africa in the context of massive rural-urban migration and rapid urbanization. This seemingly contradictory situation poses one of the major threats to public health in the developing world, and impacts the poor – and therefore the most food insecure – to the greatest extent. This paper reviews the state of knowledge about food insecurity and the nutrition transition in the urban areas of Southern Africa drawing on existing studies and new research conducted by AFSUN. The …
Muscle Plasticity And Intramuscular Signaling In The Insulin-Resistant Obese Zucker Rat, Anjaiah Katta
Muscle Plasticity And Intramuscular Signaling In The Insulin-Resistant Obese Zucker Rat, Anjaiah Katta
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The ability to increase skeletal muscle mass may have important implications for the treatment of insulin resistance (IR) and diabetes [1-3]. Recent data suggest that IR muscle may adapt differently than normal muscle; however, molecular mechanism(s) responsible for this finding are not well understood [4]. Herein, we investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying the skeletal muscle remodeling in the IR Obese Zucker (OZ) rat.
The OZ rat is characterized by skeletal muscle insulin resistance, hyperglycemia, and hyperlipidemia. Compared to LZ rats, our data demonstrate that soleus muscle hypertrophy was significantly attenuated in the OZ rats after 3-weeks of muscle overload and …
Er Stress And Lipid Metabolism In Adipocytes, Beth S. Zha, Huiping Zhou
Er Stress And Lipid Metabolism In Adipocytes, Beth S. Zha, Huiping Zhou
Microbiology and Immunology Publications
The role of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress is a rapidly emerging field of interest in the pathogenesis of metabolic diseases. Recent studies have shown that chronic activation of ER stress is closely linked to dysregulation of lipid metabolism in several metabolically important cells including hepatocytes, macrophages, β-cells, and adipocytes. Adipocytes are one of the major cell types involved in the pathogenesis of the metabolic syndrome. Recent advances in dissecting the cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in the regulation of adipogenesis and lipid metabolism indicate that activation of ER stress plays a central role in regulating adipocyte function. In this paper, …

Assessment And Management Of Adult Obesity In A Primary Care Practice, Sherry M. Adkins
Master of Public Health Program Student Publications
Purpose: The purpose of this project was to describe primary care physician adherence to National Heart Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) Clinical Guidelines on the Identification, Evaluation, and Treatment of Overweight and Obesity in Adults (1998) and to explore patient characteristics associated with physician assessment and management behaviors. Patient characteristics included age, sex, race, BMI, associated disease risk, and Medicaid coverage.
Methods: A chart abstraction of 99 randomly selected adult patients with at least one visit to a particular primary care practice during a 12-month period was completed. Patients were not pregnant during the year of review, and had a …
The Poetics Of Professionalism Among Dialysis Technicians, Laura L. Ellingson
The Poetics Of Professionalism Among Dialysis Technicians, Laura L. Ellingson
Gender and Sexuality Studies
The vast majority of care for end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients is provided by skilled (but not formally educated) paraprofessional technicians. Using Goffman's (1959) framing of the performance of self in everyday discourse, this study examines discourse from dialysis technicians and technical aides to explore these paraprofessionals' construction and performance of professional identity and professional communication within the context of an outpatient dialysis clinic. Themes of professionalism—individualized care, vigilance, teamwork, and emotion management—are illustrated via poetic transcription of interviews with technicians. I contend that such representation offers validity equal to that of traditional research accounts while embodying alternative representational strengths.

A Multidimensional View Of Childhood Obesity In The United States, Chauncey Duke Hayes
Theses Digitization Project
The purpose of this study was to review all the contributing factors that lead to obesity in children and to review both prevention and treatment methods that are being implemented in the attempt to combat the epidemic. These factors are continually evolving and include social changes, dietary changes, medical changes, K-12 physical education, and monetary strain in the economic growth within the decades following the 80's, and public perception regarding treatment and perception regarding treatment and prevention of obesity. All have an impact on the current obesity epidemic.
Hyperphosphatemia In Pediatric Oncology Patients Receiving Liposomal Amphotericin B, Chad A. Knoderer, Holly M. Knoderer
Hyperphosphatemia In Pediatric Oncology Patients Receiving Liposomal Amphotericin B, Chad A. Knoderer, Holly M. Knoderer
Scholarship and Professional Work – COPHS
OBJECTIVE: After transitioning our front-line amphotericin product to the liposomal formulation, we observed an increased incidence of hyperphosphatemia. We aimed to determine the incidence of hyperphosphatemia in children with oncologic disorders receiving an amphotericin B product and to establish whether the incidence varies depending on amphotericin formulation.
METHODS: This retrospective review of the medical record was conducted at a tertiary, free standing children’s hospital. Pharmacy data revealed 159 patients receiving an amphotericin product between November 2006 and December 2008. Doses of amphotericin, serum phosphorous, calcium and creatinine concentrations were recorded at daily time points during the 10 days following both …

The Influence Of School Eating Environment On Children's Eating Behaviors: An Examination Of The Snda-Iii, Sabrina M. Neeley
The Influence Of School Eating Environment On Children's Eating Behaviors: An Examination Of The Snda-Iii, Sabrina M. Neeley
Master of Public Health Program Student Publications
The prevalence of childhood overweight and obesity in the United States has prompted researchers to examine the factors that contribute to children’s food choices and consumption. Schools provide ample opportunities to teach children healthy eating habits, as well as create eating environments that are conducive to healthy eating behaviors. The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides federally assisted meals to millions of children every day and the assessment of the NSLP provides an opportunity to examine the school-eating environment. Hierarchical and logistic modeling of the SNDA-III, the USDA assessment of the NSLP, was conducted to determine relationships between environmental factors …
Making Free Trade Fair, Nicole Hassoun
Making Free Trade Fair, Nicole Hassoun
Philosophy Faculty Scholarship
Philosophers have done very little work on what makes trade fair. Perhaps the most extensive discussion is Malgorzata Kurjanska and Mathias Risse’s article, “Fairness in Trade II: export subsidies and the fair trade movement.”2 In their article, Kurjanska and Risse consider the case for trade subsidies and the Fair Trade movement. They suggest that it is not permissible for developed countries to give their producers subsidies because doing so does not strike an appropriate balance between meeting the needs of the global poor and protecting domestic workers (Kurjanska and Risse, 2008: 34). Kurjanska and Risse also argue that the case …
