Pilot Study To Identify The Feasibility Of Measuring Hydration Status Utilizing Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis In Children With Sickle Cell Anemia, Teresa Anne Shurley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Vaso-occlusive pain crisis is the hallmark complication of sickle cell anemiaand may be precipitated by low hydration status. The purpose of this pilot study was to: 1) identify the feasibility of measuring hydration status utilizing bioelectrical impedance analysis in children with SCA and 2) determine if sodium and fluid intake can be assessed in patients with SCA utilizing a 24 hour food recall. Ten children between the ages of 5 and 17 who have sickle cell anemia were evaluated to determine total body water, fluid intake, sodium intake and impact of temperature and humidity on pain crisis, hospitalization and use …

Phylogenomics Of Reichenowia Parasitica, An Alphaproteobacterial Endosymbiont Of The Freshwater Leech Placobdella Parasitica, Sebastian Kvist, Apurva Narechania, Alejandro Oceguera-Figueroa, Bella Fuks, Mark E. Siddall Nov 2011

Phylogenomics Of Reichenowia Parasitica, An Alphaproteobacterial Endosymbiont Of The Freshwater Leech Placobdella Parasitica, Sebastian Kvist, Apurva Narechania, Alejandro Oceguera-Figueroa, Bella Fuks, Mark E. Siddall

Publications and Research

Although several commensal alphaproteobacteria form close relationships with plant hosts where they aid in (e.g.,) nitrogen fixation and nodulation, only a few inhabit animal hosts. Among these, Reichenowia picta, R. ornata and R. parasitica, are currently the only known mutualistic, alphaproteobacterial endosymbionts to inhabit leeches. These bacteria are harbored in the epithelial cells of the mycetomal structures of their freshwater leech hosts, Placobdella spp., and these structures have no other obvious function than housing bacterial symbionts. However, the function of the bacterial symbionts has remained unclear. Here, we focused both on exploring the genomic makeup of R. parasitica and on …

Checking The Walls For Cracks: Race/Ethnic Differences In Age-Related Arterial Changes, And The Relevance Of Carotid Ultrasound For Subclinical Neurovascular Disease, Matthew Scott Markert

Open Access Dissertations

Despite advances, stroke remains the largest cause of disability and fourth leading cause of death in the United States. The relationship between changes in human vasculature (atherosclerosis and arteriosclerosis) prior to clinical incident, and other risk factors for stroke remains unclear. This dissertation represents work towards the identification of imaging biomarkers for vascular change, focusing on ultrasound to characterize persons at risk, including differences among race/ethnic groups. This research contained three distinct projects. The first goal was to determine if changes within ultrasonographic measures of carotid vasculature could be found across race/ethnic groups after adjustment for risk factors. The second …

An Examination Of Diet, Acculturation And Risk Factors For Heart Disease Among Jamaican Immigrants, Carol Renee Oladele

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Background: The South Florida region is home to over 85,000 Jamaican immigrants. Yet, little is known about the dietary intakes and predictors of risk of disease within this immigrant group. An assessment of dietary intakes and the development of dietary intake methodologies specific to the Jamaican population was important as it permitted accurate estimation of the nutrient intakes of this immigrant population whose dietary habits are not well documented. In addition, nothing is known about the prevalence of risk factors for heart disease or factors influencing risk factors among this immigrant group. The purpose of this study was to assess …
