Effect Of Feeding Wet Distillers Grains With Solubles To Beef Cattle On Air And Manure Quality, M. J. Spiehs, D. N. Miller, B. L. Woodbury, R. A. Eigenberg, V. H. Varel, D. B. Parker Jan 2011

Effect Of Feeding Wet Distillers Grains With Solubles To Beef Cattle On Air And Manure Quality, M. J. Spiehs, D. N. Miller, B. L. Woodbury, R. A. Eigenberg, V. H. Varel, D. B. Parker

Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports

Air quality is becoming a pressing issue for beef feedlot producers. Feeding practices influence the excretion of starch, fiber, nitrogen (N), and sulfur (S) in manure, thereby affecting nutrient content and the production of ammonia (NH3) and odorous compounds. Wet distillers grains with solubles (WDGS) are a common and economical ingredient in feedlot diets. WDGS are high in protein, fiber, phosphorus (P), and S but low in starch. The objective of this study was to compare NH3 concentration in the air and nutrients and volatile organic compounds (VOC) concentration in manure between two dietary treatments fed to feedlot …

Systematics And Biogeography Of The Clusioid Clade (Malpighiales), Brad R. Ruhfel Jan 2011

Systematics And Biogeography Of The Clusioid Clade (Malpighiales), Brad R. Ruhfel

Biological Sciences Faculty and Staff Research

The clusioids are a clade of flowering plants in the diverse rosid order Malpighiales. It includes five families (i.e., Bonnetiaceae, Calophyllaceae, Clusiaceae sensu stricto, Hypericaceae, and Podostemaceae) that form a conspicuous element of tropical forests worldwide and are economically important. Their phylogenetic and biogeographical history has remained uncertain, however, which has hindered our understanding of their evolution. I conducted the first taxon-rich multigene analysis of this important clade to clarify their phylogenetic relationships (Chapter 1). Plastid (cp:matK, ndhF, and rbcL) and mitochondrial (mt: matR) nucleotide sequence data from nearly 200 taxa produced a well-resolved clusioid phylogeny and indicate that several …

The Effect Of Professional Development On A Mexican Mission School: A Case Study, Vickie S. Cook Jan 2011

The Effect Of Professional Development On A Mexican Mission School: A Case Study, Vickie S. Cook

International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal

Since the early 1990s, there has been a growing body of literature regarding the facilitation of deeper thinking among educators based on the opportunity for in-service professional development (Darling-Hammond, 2003; Garet, Porter, Desimone, Birman, & Yoon, 1999, 2001; Reeves, 2010; Smith & O’Day, 1991). In-service professional development provides teachers with the opportunity to consider alternative solutions to teaching and learning situations. Providing solid professional development is the goal of schools globally. This effort can be challenging to small private schools that are pouring as many resources as possible into the necessary materials and curricula for their students. Few budget resources …

A Case For Student Teacher Placement As Preparation For Future Urban Educators, Debra S. Espinor Jan 2011

A Case For Student Teacher Placement As Preparation For Future Urban Educators, Debra S. Espinor

International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal

Do schools of education effectively train young, white, and middle-class teacher candidates to work in urban classrooms? How can schools of education prepare teachers and future teachers for classrooms that are diverse in terms of race/ethnicity, nationality, social class, language and other differences (Nieto, 2004) Classrooms that used to be homogeneous are now diverse, yet the predominant face and gender of the teacher has remained the same. Dramatic inequalities exist in the access that students around the globe have to an excellent, high quality education; inequalities that are lamentably too frequently based on race, social class, language, and other differences …

Screening For Cytomegalovirus During Pregnancy, Stuart P. Adler

Pediatrics Publications

The epidemiology and pathogenesis of CMV infections among pregnant women have been intensely studied over the last three decades. This paper highlights recent developments that make either universal or limited serologic screening for CMV during pregnancy potentially attractive. The developments include an understanding of the pathogenesis of CMV infections, a knowledge of high-risk women, the availability of accurate methods for the serologic diagnosis of a primary CMV infection using either single or serial blood samples, accurate methods for the diagnosis of fetal infection via amniotic fluid, sensitive fetal and placental indicators for neonatal outcomes, and the availability of potentially effective …

No. 08: Climate Change And Food Security In Southern African Cities, Gina Ziervogel, Bruce Frayne Jan 2011

No. 08: Climate Change And Food Security In Southern African Cities, Gina Ziervogel, Bruce Frayne

African Food Security Urban Network

The current urban transition in the Global South is at the heart of discussions about the relationship between climate change and food security. This paper explores the links between climate change and food security within the context of the urban transition taking place in Southern Africa. Climate change is expected to negatively accentuate existing levels of urban food insecurity and these adverse impacts are likely to fall disproportionately on the poor. Researchers, planners and policymakers in Southern African cities are starting to explore how changes in weather associated with climate change are likely to affect urban lifestyles and systems. In …

No. 11: The State Of Food Insecurity In Cape Town, Jane Battersby Jan 2011

No. 11: The State Of Food Insecurity In Cape Town, Jane Battersby

African Food Security Urban Network

Cape Town is one of the wealthiest cities in the Southern African region. Yet, the vast majority of households in poor areas of the city experience food insecurity. This paper uses AFSUN data to examine the characteristics and drivers of food insecurity in Cape Town. While food insecurity correlates closely with income poverty and household structure, broader factors also impact upon urban food security, most notably urban design and market structure. Efforts to address urban food insecurity should therefore not simply target the household. Instead, a food systems approach is necessary, which considers supply chains, procurement, nutrition support programmes, public …

No. 06: Urban Food Insecurity And The Advent Of Food Banking In Southern Africa, Daniel N. Warshawsky Jan 2011

No. 06: Urban Food Insecurity And The Advent Of Food Banking In Southern Africa, Daniel N. Warshawsky

African Food Security Urban Network

In most African cities, there is sufficient food to feed everyone and considerable wastage of fresh and processed foodstuffs. Poor households are food insecure because they cannot afford to purchase enough quality food and are unable to access the surplus food that exists. Food redistribution NGOs are well established in Southern Africa but more recently large centralized food banks have been advocated as a means to get surplus food to the hungry. In 2009, the first food banks opened in the South African cities of Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban and Port Elizabeth. The South African model of food collection and …

A Descriptive Study Of Funded Homeless Education Programs: Barriers And Supports In New York State, Kerri A. Canzone

Theses and Dissertations

With the issue of homelessness ever-present in our educational system, it is important to examine current barriers and supports in the education of students experiencing homelessness. It is also critical to examine the academic achievement of this special population of at-risk students. Descriptive information was sought about types of barriers to education access and success, as well as supports and academic achievement in New York State-funded Local Education Agencies (LEAs) and to ascertain what educational leaders are doing to meet the educational needs of their homeless student population. Regional differences among barriers and supports were examined, as well as English …

Identifying Resiliency Factors In Commercially Sexually Exploited And Trafficked Youth: A Qualitative Study, Pamela Gutherie Jan 2011

Identifying Resiliency Factors In Commercially Sexually Exploited And Trafficked Youth: A Qualitative Study, Pamela Gutherie

Selected Full Text Dissertations, 2011-

Although exact numbers are unknown, the largest prevalence study to date has estimated that between 1999-2000 alone a minimum of 244,000 children were at risk for being commercially sexually exploited in the United States, a number based on findings that approximately 70% of street youth and 30% of shelter youth engage in survival sex (Estes & Weiner, 2001). The consequences of commercial sexual exploitation can be devastating and range from mental and physical health problems, substance abuse, physical and sexual violence to death (Kramer & Berg, 2003). While some risk factors have been identified, with childhood sexual abuse being the …

Psychobehavioral Attributes Of Body Image In College Freshmen And Seniors: Implications For Long-Term Health, James E. Leone, Julie A. Patridge, Suanne Maurer-Starks

Movement Arts, Health Promotion and Leisure Studies Faculty Publications

Introduction: Understanding and assessing behavioral risk factors, particularly among college populations, is challenging for health educators. Similarly, issues affecting mental health remain unclear in terms of how body image evolves year to year in college students. A better understanding of how students perceive their bodies and to what extent it affects behavior is needed. Purpose: This study assessed psychobehavioral aspects of body image perception and discrepancy in college students to better identify risk behaviors. Methods: Two surveys (Body Image Questionnaire and Behavior Assessment Questionnaire) were administered to college freshmen and seniors (N = 170).

Results: Students engaged in unhealthy body …

When Do Fat Taxes Increase Consumer Welfare?, Jayson L. Lusk, Christiane Schroeter Jan 2011

When Do Fat Taxes Increase Consumer Welfare?, Jayson L. Lusk, Christiane Schroeter

Agribusiness

Previous analyses of fat taxes have generally worked within an empirical framework in which it is difficult to determine whether consumers benefit from the policy. This note outlines on simple means to determine whether consumers benefit from a fat tax by comparing the ratio of expenditures on the taxed good to the weight effect of the tax against the individual’s willingness to pay for a one-pound weight reduction. Our empirical calculations suggest that an individual would have to be willing to pay about $1500 to reduce weight by one pound for a tax on sugary beverages to be welfare enhancing. …
