Therapeutic Touch And Cancer Cells, Gloria A. Gronowicz Jan 2011

Therapeutic Touch And Cancer Cells, Gloria A. Gronowicz

UCHC Graduate School Masters Theses 2003 - 2010

Energy medicine therapies based on a human biofield have been practiced for thousands of years and can trace their origin in Ayurveda. Our goal was to determine if Therapeutic Touch (TT), a more recently developed energy medicine practice, had any effects on cancer cells. Previous work in our laboratory demonstrated that TT significantly increased the growth of normal human osteoblasts and increased the synthesis of bone matrix proteins and mineralization in cell culture. In this study as was practiced in our previous studies, TT was performed twice a week for 10 minutes and was compared to untreated cultures and 'placebo-treated" …

Discovering Native Bees, Alison P. Stevens Jan 2011

Discovering Native Bees, Alison P. Stevens

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

NATURAL SYSTEMS PROVIDE humans with a variety of services essential to our survival. Ecosystem services such as climate regulation, water purification, oxygen production, waste treatment and detoxification, flood prevention, and pollination are provided at no cost, yet their true value is immeasurable. In our economydriven world, these systems are often taken for granted, and as a consequence many are in peril. Understanding their role is a critical first step towards ensuring that they endure. Pollination, the process of moving pollen grains from one flower to another to stimulate fruit and seed production, is among the easiest of these services to …

The Economic Causes Of The Egyptian Revolution "January 25, 2011", Nivin Abdel Meguid, Sanaa El Banna, Rana Korayem, Hoda Salah Eldin

Papers, Posters, and Presentations

A growing number of recent studies on the Egyptian revolution attribute its beginning to a set of socio-economic and political factors. On the political side, explanations includes a) the persistent rule by terror for thirty years through the emergency law, b) the prohibition on political rights and civil freedoms and lack of free and fair elections, c) police brutality against activists– namely the case of Khaled Said) the wide spread corruption, e) the spread of virtual-opposition through social networking websites and the Arabic satellite, f) the success of the Tunisian revolution as a bloodless and fast change, the sacrifice of …

Nyc Budget Cuts: A Counter-Productive Method To Effective Government-Nonprofit Contracting Relationships?, Anna-Kay Sinclair

Wilson Center for Social Entrepreneurship

This study examines the relationship between New York City budget cuts and the expenditure of human service nonprofits specifically involved in the government contracting relationship. With a focus on the Department for the Aging (DFTA), I examine nonprofits that provide a variety of services to the aging population on behalf of the DFTA. Correlations and regressions are presented examining the relationship between DFTA budget and nonprofit spending. The results of my analysis do not indicate a positive relationship between these two variables.

2011 Report Of The Director Of Public Health - Social Inequalities In Health In Montreal. Progess To Date, Dr. Margaret Chan, World Health Organization

Mickey Leland Center Information Portal

In 1998, the Direction de santé publique de Montréal’s first annual report noted a 10-year difference between the average life expectancy of men living in disadvantaged neighbourhoods and of those in wealthy areas. Over a decade has gone by since this first portrait of Montrealers’ state of health was published and it is now time to measure the progress we have made. Therefore, the Director’s 2011 report is focused on social inequalities in health.

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

The Center for Archaeological Research (CAR) of The University of Texas at San Antonio conducted archeological significance testing at 41BX17, the Granberg Site, from January to March 2006. The testing was conducted for the Texas Department of Transportation, Environmental Affairs Division (TxDOT-ENV). The Granberg Site sits on the eastern flood terrace of the Salado Creek south of Loop 410 in San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas. Planned road improvements including installation of a storm sewer line and a water main prompted the need to assess whether (1) cultural deposits including human remains still exist after previous testing and (2) if the …

Archeological Survey Investigations At Martin Creek Lake State Park, Rusk County, Texas, Timothy K. Perttula, Bo Nelson, Jon C. Lohse

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

An intensive cultural resources survey was conducted at Martin Creek Lake State Park by the Center for Archaeological Studies and Archeological & Environmental Consultants, LLC in June 2010 under contract with Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. Although previous investigations had been carried out in the park, no comprehensive survey had been completed that would allow TPWD and park management personnel to appropriately manage the park’s cultural resources in accordance with state law. During the 2010 survey, the park was stratified into areas with high, medium, and low probability of containing archaeological sites. A total of 423 shovel tests were excavated …

From Atheoretical To Motivation Theory-Based Youth Discretionary-Time Physical Activity Promotion: Current And Future Directions, Megan Babkes Stellino, Christina Sinclair

Faculty Publications

This article describes the importance of promoting children’s discretionary-time physical activity (DTPA) in connection with the rising international obesity epidemic. School based recess is highlighted as exemplar of an opportunity for children to obtain more DTPA. Brief review of the extant research focused on efforts to increase children’s recess physical activity (RPA) is provided. Literature from the field of sports psychology that has established a strong foundation of evidence regarding factors that increase youth motivation in various physical domain contexts will guide the proposed expansion to theoretical examination of predictors of youth DTPA. Three relevant motivation theory frameworks will be …

Female Genital Circumcision Social Indicators That Influence Attitudes On Abandonment Of Fgc In Nigeria, Joanna Eisele Jan 2011

Female Genital Circumcision Social Indicators That Influence Attitudes On Abandonment Of Fgc In Nigeria, Joanna Eisele

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

More than "100 million girls and women worldwide have undergone female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) and more than three million girls are at risk for cutting each year on the African continent alone" (Population Reference Bureau 2009). The practice is recognized internationally as a violation of the human rights of girls and women, and constitutes an extreme form of discrimination against women. Research has shown that reasons given for continuing the practice of FGC vary widely across cultural and social contexts. Little research has been conducted towards understanding and predicting attitudes toward FGC, which in turn can help inform program policy …

Caring For Compromised Cattle: Assessing Animals At Risk Jan 2011

Caring For Compromised Cattle: Assessing Animals At Risk

Nebraska Beef Quality Assurance Program

Cattlemen have long recognized the need to properly care for their livestock. Sound animal husbandry practices – based on research and decades of practical experience – are known to impact the well-being of cattle, individual animal health and herd productivity. There is no doubt that producers work hard to ensure that their cattle are properly cared for throughout all stages of production. Unfortunately, it’s a fact of raising cattle that some animals will become injured to the extent that they are unable to stand or walk without assistance.

The Cns Microvascular Pericyte: Pericyte-Astrocyte Crosstalk In The Regulation Of Tissue Survival, Drew Bonkowski, Vladimir Katyshev, Roumen D. Balabanov, Andre Borisov, Paula Dore-Duffy

Wayne State University Associated BioMed Central Scholarship

Abstract

The French scientist Charles Benjamin Rouget identified the pericyte nearly 140 years ago. Since that time the role of the pericyte in vascular function has been difficult to elucidate. It was not until the development of techniques to isolate and culture pericytes that scientists have begun to understand the true impact of this unique cell in the maintenance of tissue homeostasis. In the brain the pericyte is an integral cellular component of the blood-brain barrier and, together with other cells of the neurovascular unit (endothelial cells, astrocytes and neurons) the pericyte makes fine-tuned regulatory adjustments and adaptations to promote …
