Bds: An Alternative Medium For Regeneration And Growth Of Multiple Plant Species In Vitro, Michael Brian Greenway
Bds: An Alternative Medium For Regeneration And Growth Of Multiple Plant Species In Vitro, Michael Brian Greenway
Student Theses and Dissertations
The objective of this study was to test the BDS (Dunstan and Short, 1977) basal salt formulation as an exemplary medium choice for in vitro applications utilizing rice, maize, soybean, cotton, onion, tobacco, muscadine, raspberry, and gerbera. The applications included: callus growth, plant regeneration, hairy root growth, production of secondary metabolites, and micropropagation. Two commonly used basal salt formulations MS (Murashige and Skoog, 1962) and B5 (Gamborg et al., 1968) were included as treatments in the experiments along with BCA, a version of BDS with MS level of calcium. BDS or BCA were comparable or superior to MS and B5 …

Body Mass, Frequency Of Eating And Breakfast Consumption In 9-13 Year Olds, Tara Coppinger, Y. M. Jeanes, J. Hardwick, S. Reeves
Pre-prints
Background: Unhealthy eating patterns in childhood can lead to adverse health conditions, particularly obesity. However, debate remains around the precise eating behaviours that lead to these conditions. The present study aimed to address this lack of evidence by reporting on the eating frequency, breakfast consumption and body mass index (BMI, kg m–2) of youth in the UK.
Methods: A total of 264 (133 boys and 131 girls) participants, aged 10–13 years, completed self-report measures of dietary intake via 3-day food/drink diaries (Friday to Sunday). Trained researchers recorded height and weight to calculate the BMI. Diaries were analysed using …

Reactome (http://www.reactome.org) is a collaboration among groups at the Ontario Institute for Cancer Research, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, New York University School of Medicine and The European Bioinformatics Institute, to develop an open source curated bioinformatics database of human pathways and reactions. Recently, we developed a new web site with improved tools for pathway browsing and data analysis. The Pathway Browser is an Systems Biology Graphical Notation (SBGN)-based visualization system that supports zooming, scrolling and event highlighting. It exploits PSIQUIC web services to overlay our curated pathways with molecular interaction data from the Reactome Functional Interaction Network and external interaction …

Food for Health: Publications
T cell receptor (TCR) recognition of antigenic peptides bound and presented by major histocompatibility complex (MHC) molecules forms the basis of the cellular immune response to pathogens and cancer. TCRs bind peptide/MHC molecules weakly and with fast kinetics, features which have hindered detailed biophysical studies of these interactions. Modified peptides resulting in enhanced TCR binding could help overcome these challenges. Further, there is considerable interest in using modified peptides with enhanced TCR binding as the basis for clinical vaccines. Here, we studied how fluorine substitutions in an antigenic peptide can selectively impact TCR recognition. Using a structure-guided design approach, we …
Managing Complexity In Modern Farming, Ross Kingwell
Managing Complexity In Modern Farming, Ross Kingwell
Natural Resources Research Articles
Modern farming in Australia is no longer simple. Farms are large, multi-enterprise businesses underpinned by expensive capital investments, changing production technologies, volatile markets and social challenges. The complexity of modern broadacre farming leads to the question: what is the nature of the relationship between farm business complexity and farm profitability? This study uses bioeconomic farm modelling and employs eight measures of complexity to examine the profitability and complexity of a wide range of broadacre farming systems in Australia. Rank order correlations between farm profitability and each measure of complexity show inconsistent relationships, although the most profitable farming systems are found …

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works
Caseins are major constituents of mammalian milks that are thought to be exclusively expressed in mammary glands and to function primarily as a protein source, as well as to ameliorate intestinal calcium uptake. In addition, proinflammatory and immunomodulatory properties have been reported for bovine caseins. Our aim was to investigate whether human casein α s1 (CSN1S1) is expressed outside the mammary gland and possesses immunomodulatory functions in humans as well. For this purpose, CSN1S1 mRNA was detected in primary human monocytes and CD4+ and CD8+ T cells, but not in CD19 + B cells. CSN1S1 protein was traceable in supernatants …
Assessment Of Pubertal Development Of Boars Derived From Ultrasonographic Determination Of Testicular Diameter, J.J. Ford, T.H. Wise
Assessment Of Pubertal Development Of Boars Derived From Ultrasonographic Determination Of Testicular Diameter, J.J. Ford, T.H. Wise
Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports
At the onset of puberty, seminiferous tubules rapidly increase in diameter, thereby occupying a greater proportion of the testis, resulting in a rapid increase in testicular size. The objective of the current studies was to evaluate ultrasonography for assessing testicular diameter, as a basis for ranking boars relative to their extent of pubertal development. In the initial study, prior to castration at 4, 5, 6, or 7 mo of age, testicular length and diameter were assessed by ultrasonography in 160 anesthetized boars. After castration, testes were weighed. Mean diameter of seminiferous tubules and percentage of the testis occupied by tubules …

Determinants Of Bovine Thermal Response To Heat And Solar Radiation Exposures In A Field Environment, Brad Scharf, Michael J. Leonard, Robert L. Weaber, Terry L. Mader, G. Leroy Hahn, Donald E. Spiers
Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports
Continuous exposure of cattle to summer heat in the absence of shade results in significant hyperthermia and impairs growth and general health. Reliable predictors of heat strain are needed to identify this condition. A 12-day study was conducted during a moderate summer heat period using 12 Angus x Simmental (Bos taurus) steers (533± 12 kg average body weight) to identify animal and ambient determinations of core body temperature (Tcore) and respiration rate (RR) responses to heat stress. Steers were provided standard diet and water ad libitum, and implanted intraperitoneally with telemetric transmitters to monitor Tcore …
