Comparison Of Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis Instruments And Skinfold Calipers In The Determination Of Percent Body Fat In Division I Tennis Players, Michael Woodson Apr 2011

Comparison Of Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis Instruments And Skinfold Calipers In The Determination Of Percent Body Fat In Division I Tennis Players, Michael Woodson

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

Body composition, specifically percent body fat, is an important measurement performed in both the clinical and educational settings. Very reliable and accurate systems for measuring body composition are available for use, but they are time-consuming and very expensive, such as dual x-ray absorptiometry and hydrostatic weighing. Attempting to find technology that is inexpensive and easy to operate in determining body composition is a difficult task. However, bioelectrical impedance analysis machines offer the possibility of fulfilling this need in the educational and clinical settings.  The question that needs to be answered is whether the bioelectrical impedance analyzers are a reliable and …

Understanding Geographic Variations In Bmi In India, Ravikumar Chockalingham, Ramesh Raghavan, Jyotsna Agrawal, Gyanesh Lama, Hor Yan Angel Lai, Guatam Yadama

Center for Social Development Research

Comparison of Body Mass Index is a useful marker for energy imbalance and associated variations across populations. High BMI is associated with cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, whereas low BMI is associated with increased mortality. BMI comparisons across geographical locations may give us indication as to which direction the public health policies should head and what could be the corrective approach towards a more balanced and healthier energy level. The current study uses Indian National Family Health Survey (NFHS-3) data for women from 2005-06 to develop state-specific models of BMI and do inter-state comparisons. We also examined the individual versus contextual …

Mining Patterns Of The Aspen Leaf Miner, Phyllocnistis Populiella, On Its Host Plant, Populus Tremuloides, Martin L. Morton, Maria E. Pereyra

Western North American Naturalist

Feeding behavior of aspen leaf miner (Phyllocnistis populiella) larvae on quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides) leaves was examined, by using image-analysis software, to determine the pattern and distance of the larvae’s mining trails and measure the surface area of infested leaves and consumed leaf tissue. Mining pathways between hatching and pupation sites were serpentine and generally followed predictable, sequential changes in orientation. This pattern was most obvious in smaller leaves, those with a surface area of about 700 mm2 or less. In leaves larger than 700 mm2, plasticity in mining behavior increased. The serpentine …

Ungulate Herbivory On Alpine Willow In The Sangre De Cristo Mountains Of Colorado, Linda C. Zeigenfuss, Kathryn A. Schoenecker, Lisa K. Van Amburg Apr 2011

Ungulate Herbivory On Alpine Willow In The Sangre De Cristo Mountains Of Colorado, Linda C. Zeigenfuss, Kathryn A. Schoenecker, Lisa K. Van Amburg

Western North American Naturalist

In many areas of the Rocky Mountains, elk (Cervus elaphus) migrate from low-elevation mountain valleys during spring to high-elevation subalpine and alpine areas for the summer. Research has focused on the impacts of elk herbivory on winter-range plant communities, particularly on woody species such as willow and aspen; however, little information is available on the effects of elk herbivory on alpine willows. In the Sangre de Cristo Mountains of south central Colorado, select alpine areas appear to receive high levels of summer elk herbivory, while other areas are nearly unbrowsed. In 2005 and 2008, we measured willow height, …

Comparative Analysis Of The Magnitude Of Oxidative Stress Following Acute High Fat Feeding And Acute Strenuous Exercise, Cameron Grant Thomas Mccarthy Apr 2011

Comparative Analysis Of The Magnitude Of Oxidative Stress Following Acute High Fat Feeding And Acute Strenuous Exercise, Cameron Grant Thomas Mccarthy

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Two prevalent origins of oxidative stress in Western society are the ingestion of certain nutrients and exercise. The purpose of this investigation was to compare the magnitude of increase in oxidative stress following acute feeding and acute exercise. Twelve exercise-trained men consumed a high-fat meal or performed one of three exercise bouts, in a random order, cross-over design. Blood samples were assayed for malondialdehyde (MDA), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC), and triglycerides (TAG). A significant condition effect was noted for MDA (p=0.01) and H2O2 (p<0.0001), with values highest for the meal condition. A trend was also noted for TAG (p=0.07), with values highest for the meal condition. These results illustrate that the magnitude of oxidative stress following a mealis significantly greater than the magnitude of oxidative stress elecitied after an acutebout of strenuous exercise, in a sample of healthy, exercise-trained men.

The Role Of Oxygen During In Vitro Culture And Immunoisolation Of Islets Of Langerhans, Christopher A. Fraker Apr 2011

The Role Of Oxygen During In Vitro Culture And Immunoisolation Of Islets Of Langerhans, Christopher A. Fraker

Open Access Dissertations

While clinical transplantation of islets of Langerhans for the treatment of insulin dependent Diabetes Mellitus has shown significant promise in recent years, there remains a need for procedural optimizations to improve cell viability, functionality and ultimately, graft longevity. One of the most critical factors to islet cell survival is the proper oxygenation of these highly metabolic cellular aggregates. In culture, islets experience suboptimal oxygen profiles delimited by steep gradients across culture media. When retransplanted, they are subjected to extremes of hypoxia and anoxia, resulting in pronounced graft dysfunction and cell loss, which is further exacerbated when these cells are immunoisolated …

Environmental Implications Of Polymer Coated Urea, Joshua James Lemonte Apr 2011

Environmental Implications Of Polymer Coated Urea, Joshua James Lemonte

Theses and Dissertations

Nitrogen is an essential plant nutrient in the biosphere. Although N is necessary and beneficial for life, it is also a common pollutant in the atmosphere and hydrosphere as it may be lost to the atmosphere as ammonia (NH3) or nitrous oxide (N2O) gases or to groundwater as nitrate (NO3-) following fertilization. Polymer coated urea (PCU) is one type of N fertilizer which uses temperature-controlled diffusion to control N release to better match plant demand and mitigate environmental losses of N. The objectives of this project were to simultaneously compare the effects of PCU on gaseous (as N2O and NH3) …

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

China and other rapidly developing economies face the dual challenge of substantially increasing yields of cereal grains while at the same time reducing the very substantial environmental impacts of intensive agriculture. We used a model-driven integrated soil–crop system management approach to develop a maize production system that achieved mean maize yields of 13.0 t ha−1 on 66 on-farm experimental plots—nearly twice the yield of current farmers’ practices—with no increase in N fertilizer use. Such integrated soil–crop system management systems represent a priority for agricultural research and implementation, especially in rapidly growing economies.

Exploring Student Perceptions To Explain The Relationship Between Physical Activity And Academic Achievement In Adolescents: A Mixed Methods Study, Megan J. Hylok Apr 2011

Exploring Student Perceptions To Explain The Relationship Between Physical Activity And Academic Achievement In Adolescents: A Mixed Methods Study, Megan J. Hylok

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

A nationwide survey conducted by the Center for Disease Control in 2007 reported 65% of high school students did not meet the recommendation that youth participate in at least 60 minutes of physical activity most days of the week (CDC, 2008). While research has focused its attention primarily on bodily health, growing evidence supports the benefits of physical activity on brain health (Ratey & Hagerman, 2008). Physical activity is important and many adolescents are not meeting the recommendation, therefore, it is important to explore the adolescent perceptions to understand which factors influence physical activity participation. The significance of this study …

Vitamin D Supplementation In Persons With Parkinson's Disease, Anna Billings Moore

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Individuals with Parkinson's Disease (PD) have a higher incidence of osteoporosis and hypovitaminosis D. Vitamin D supplementation has not been widely evaluated in people with PD for bone and muscular health. This investigation examined the effects of vitamin D supplementation over 12 weeks (treatment n=5; control n=2) in PD. Subjects performed one repetition maximum for leg and chest press, six-minute walk, timed up and go, and quality of life questionnaires. Blood samples were analyzed for vitamin D levels and markers of bone turnover. Dual x-ray absorptiometry scans were performed to determine body composition and bone quality data. Significant improvements (p<0.05) were found in relative strength for one repetition maximum chest press, as well as fat mass for the treatment group when compared to controls, indicating a positive effect of vitamin D supplementation. No other significant differences were found between groups over time.

The Impact Of Intensity On Exercise-Induced Oxidative Stress In Trained Men, Tyler Mitchell Farney Apr 2011

The Impact Of Intensity On Exercise-Induced Oxidative Stress In Trained Men, Tyler Mitchell Farney

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Exercise has been noted in some, but not all studies, to elicit an oxidative stress response. The discrepancy in findings may be related to differences in exercise intensity across study protocols. Biomarkers of oxidative stress were compared for aerobic and anaerobic exercise bouts of different intensities and durations. On different days, exercised-trained men (n=12; 21-35 yrs) performed aerobic cycle exercise (60 min at 70% HR reserve) and anaerobic cycle sprints (five, 60 sec sprints at 100% max GXT watts; and ten, 15 sec sprints at 200% max GXT watts). Blood was collected before and 0, 30, and 60 min post-exercise …

Diet And Disease: Subsistence Change And Tuberculosis Among The Pawnee, Omaha And Winnebago In The Nineteenth Century, Owen J. O'Reilly

Department of Anthropology: Theses and Student Research

The mid- to late nineteenth century was the beginning of the reservation era for most Native Americans, ushering in a series of unprecedented changes that affected the cultural traditions and physical health of groups across the United States. For the Pawnee, Omaha and Winnebago in Nebraska, changes in subsistence patterns not only destroyed traditions but influenced the spread of disease and malnutrition. Government rations, consisting largely of wheat flour, beef, bacon, pork, sugar and coffee, were a drastic departure from the traditional diet of lean bison meat, corn, beans, squash and wild food and those who depended on these rations …

Winter Range Studies Of The Western Arctic Caribou Herd, Northwest Alaska, Kyle Joly Apr 2011

Winter Range Studies Of The Western Arctic Caribou Herd, Northwest Alaska, Kyle Joly

Biological Sciences

Climate change is likely to bring a myriad of interrelated changes to the Arctic. One change is warmer and drier conditions that could increase the prevalence of wildfire in northwest Alaska. Wildfires destroy terricolous lichens that Western Arctic Herd caribou (Rangifer tarandus ) rely on during winter; taking decades to recover. My goals were to assess the recent (1950--2007) fire regime within the herd's range, identify characteristics of habitat selected by overwintering caribou, and determine the potential impacts of climate change on the fire regime and caribou winter range. I used a combination of existing data and information collected at …
