Endocrine And Immune Profiles Of Immature Pinnipeds, Mandy Jean Keogh Apr 2011

Endocrine And Immune Profiles Of Immature Pinnipeds, Mandy Jean Keogh

Marine Biology

There is increasing interest in assessing the health of individuals and populations of pinnipeds found in the North Pacific, primarily due to population declines leading to conservation concerns. This study assessed the "health" of animals by quantifying hormones associated with fat mass (leptin), lipid and water metabolism (cortisol and aldosterone), and growth and metabolism (thyroxine and triiodothyronine) as well as circulating total and differential leukocyte counts and in vitro proliferation of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC). Body mass and condition are influenced by an individual's disease and nutritional state. Glucocorticoids are known to affect the immune system and may be …

The Influence Of Habitat Complexity, Prey Quality, And Predator Avoidance On Sea Otter Resource Selection In Alaska, Nathan Lord Stewart Apr 2011

The Influence Of Habitat Complexity, Prey Quality, And Predator Avoidance On Sea Otter Resource Selection In Alaska, Nathan Lord Stewart

Marine Biology

The differential selection of habitat by animals is one of the fundamental relationships that enable species to coexist. Habitat selection may be among various discrete categories (e.g., mudflat, boulder field, or meadow) or among a continuous array of characteristics such as vegetation percent cover, benthic substrate size, substrate rugosity, distance to prey resources, or distance to suitable escape terrain from predation. Sea otters are particularly suitable for resource selection studies because they are capable of selecting a wide variety habitat types in response to prey availability, competition, and predation. In Alaska, sea otters associate with a range of habitats types …

Contaminant Exposure And Associated Biological Responses In Southern Beaufort Sea Polar Bears, Katrina K. Knott Apr 2011

Contaminant Exposure And Associated Biological Responses In Southern Beaufort Sea Polar Bears, Katrina K. Knott

Biological Sciences

Concentrations of mercury (Hg) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were examined in polar bear (Ursus marititnus) to assess variations among sex and age cohorts, and evaluate possible adverse impacts of combined toxicant exposures. Biomarkers of selenium (Se) status (whole blood and serum Se concentrations, glutathione peroxidase activity), and thyroid status (total and free concentrations of thyroxine and tri-iodothyronine) were examined in Southern Beaufort Sea (SBS) polar bears. Both Hg and PCBs tended to be greater in female than in male polar bears and likely related to the type and proportion of marine-based prey in their overall diet. Significant positive relationships between …

Genetic Ancestry Modeling And Performance Association In The Alaskan Sled Dog, Heather Jay Huson Apr 2011

Genetic Ancestry Modeling And Performance Association In The Alaskan Sled Dog, Heather Jay Huson

Biological Sciences

Alaskan sled dogs present us with the unique opportunity to study the development of a population of dogs produced from the selective breeding of high performance athletes. I establish that sled dogs are a genetically distinct population of dogs that segregate into two sub-groups based on their racing style of "sprint" or short distance and "distance" or long distance. The practice of interbreeding Alaskan sled dogs with various purebred dogs over the past century has allowed us to investigate the impact of these domestic breeds on the sled dog genome and their potential contribution to athletic performance. Here, I establish …

Nucleic Acid Ratios As An Index Of Growth And Nutritional Ecology In Pacific Cod (Gadus Macrocephalus), Walleye Pollock (Theragra Chalcogramma), And Pacific Herring (Clupea Pallasii ), Ashwin Sreenivasan Apr 2011

Nucleic Acid Ratios As An Index Of Growth And Nutritional Ecology In Pacific Cod (Gadus Macrocephalus), Walleye Pollock (Theragra Chalcogramma), And Pacific Herring (Clupea Pallasii ), Ashwin Sreenivasan

Fisheries

Pacific cod (Gadus macrocephalus), walleye pollock (Theragra chalcogramma), and Pacific herring (Clupea pallasii) are among the most ecologically and commercially important species in the North Pacific Ocean. In spite of their importance, little is known about larval and juvenile growth strategies in these fish. Since larval and juvenile fish growth may determine future growth, possibly affecting recruitment success, assessments of growth strategies might improve predictive growth models. Nucleic acid ratios (RNA/DNA) can have applications as a sensitive growth index in larval and juvenile Pacific cod, walleye pollock, and Pacific herring, and can potentially be used to determine growth responses and …

Does Improving Maternal Knowledge Of Vaccines Impact Infant Immunization Rates? A Community-Based Randomized-Controlled Trial In Karachi, Pakistan, Aatekah Owais, Beenish Hanif, Amna R. Siddiqui, Ajmal Agha, Anita K. M. Zaidi

Department of Paediatrics and Child Health

Background: In Pakistan, only 59-73% of children 12-23 months of age are fully immunized. This randomized, controlled trial was conducted to assess the impact of a low-literacy immunization promotion educational intervention for mothers living in low-income communities of Karachi on infant immunization completion rates. Methods: Three hundred and sixty-six mother-infant pairs, with infants aged Results: Baseline characteristics among the two groups were similar. At 4 month assessment, among 179 mother-infant pairs in the intervention group, 129 (72.1%) had received all 3 doses of DPT/Hepatitis B vaccine, whereas in the control group 92/178 (51.7%) had received all 3 doses. Multivariable analysis …

Chelation Therapy As A Treatment For Autism, Cassandra Baty, Rachel Terharr Apr 2011

Chelation Therapy As A Treatment For Autism, Cassandra Baty, Rachel Terharr

Festival of Communities: UG Symposium (Posters)

As medical advances continue to be made, there has yet to be an effectively consistent cure to the commonly known condition, Autism. Some researchers and physicians state that by using chelation therapy, it could help cure mercury poisoning in autistic individuals who were affected by vaccines or other sources. Because of the lack of research and knowledge of chelation therapy, there has been some controversy as to the ethics of providing chelation therapy to autistic children. The families that are put through these trials are faced with high costs, and no guarantee that their child could be cured. But to …

Redeeming Proper Taste: Food As An Emblem Of Luxury In Eighteenth Century England, Hannah R. Hinkson Apr 2011

Redeeming Proper Taste: Food As An Emblem Of Luxury In Eighteenth Century England, Hannah R. Hinkson

Masters Theses

Food: the universal language. As a platform upon which people express their worldviews, food is the most important basic ingredient to both life and social progress. Elegance, gluttony, moderation, and excess are nowhere more evident than at the dinner table; such applications are evidence of the power of food to unite and destroy entire communities. And logic suggests that because food is necessary for survival, the human condition is, in part, reflected in taste. What a person craves is an indication of that person's identity.

But the connection between the aesthetic and economic significance of food is most obvious in …

Wetland Management Guidelines For Nebraska's Wildlife Management Areas, Ted Lagrange, Randy Stutheit Apr 2011

Wetland Management Guidelines For Nebraska's Wildlife Management Areas, Ted Lagrange, Randy Stutheit

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts

Prior to Euro-American settlement, wetlands covered about 6% of the Nebraska landscape. Since settlement, the state’s wetlands have suffered serious decline. For example, approximately 90% of Rainwater Basin playa wetlands and 90% of the eastern saline wetlands have been destroyed or are highly degraded. Remaining wetlands are threatened by conversion to other uses (e.g. agriculture), invasive and aggressive vegetation, siltation, and lack of proper management. Only through sound management can the wetlands on our Wildlife Management Areas (WMA) be preserved for the citizens of Nebraska, as well as the native plants and wildlife dependent on them.

This section is directed …

Effects Of Rodent Species, Seed Species, And Predator Cues On Seed Fate, Kelly J. Sivy, Steven M. Ostoja, Eugene W. Schupp, Susan Durham Apr 2011

Effects Of Rodent Species, Seed Species, And Predator Cues On Seed Fate, Kelly J. Sivy, Steven M. Ostoja, Eugene W. Schupp, Susan Durham

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Seed selection, removal and subsequent management by granivorous animals is thought to be a complex interaction of factors including qualities of the seeds themselves (e.g., seed size, nutritional quality) and features of the local habitat (e.g. perceived predator risk). At the same time, differential seed selection and dispersal is thought to have profound effects on seed fate and potentially vegetation dynamics. In a feeding arena, we tested whether rodent species, seed species, and indirect and direct predation cues influence seed selection and handling behaviors (e.g., scatter hoarding versus larder hoarding) of two heteromyid rodents, Ord’s kangaroo rat (Dipodomys ordii) and …
