The Use Of Mcv And Mch To Screen For Iron Deficiency In Pregnancy Among Women With Normal Haemoglobin Values, Charles M. Muteshi
The Use Of Mcv And Mch To Screen For Iron Deficiency In Pregnancy Among Women With Normal Haemoglobin Values, Charles M. Muteshi
Master of Medicine in Obstetrics and Gynecology
Background: Worldwide the commonest cause of anaemia is inadequate nutritional supply manifest as iron deficiency. Iron deficiency affects 25% of the world’s population and up to 50% in the developing world. Most susceptible are women of child bearing age and infants. In pregnancy most iron deficiency is detected when there is already resultant anaemia by measuring the haemoglobin content. It is important to develop a tool that could pick out women who are iron deficient before anaemia ensues. This study aims to determine the predictive ability of red cell mean corpuscular haemoglobin (MCH) and mean corpuscular volume (MCV) in screening …

A Novel Methodology For Evaluating User Interfaces In Health Care, Luca Longo, Bridget Kane
A Novel Methodology For Evaluating User Interfaces In Health Care, Luca Longo, Bridget Kane
Conference papers
A pilot study is reported to identify an improved method of evaluating digital user interfaces in health care. Experience and developments from the aviation industry and the NASA-TLX mental workload assessment tools are applied in conjunction with Nielsen heuristics for evaluating an Electronic Health Record System in an Irish hospital. The NASA-TLX performs subjective workload assessments on operators working with various human-computer systems. Results suggest that depending on the cognitive workload and the working context of users, the usability will differ for the same digital interface. We conclude that incorporating the NASA-TLX with Nielsen's heuristics offers a more reliable method …

"Movie To Movement: Creating Social Change With The Documentary Film 'Food Stamped'", Shira Potash
Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs
There is substantial evidence linking obesity to lower incomes. Governmental food and farm policy directly affects the affordability, availability, and accessibility of healthy food in low-income areas. Policy also impacts the supplemental nutrition assistance program (SNAP) and nutrition education for SNAP recipients. Documentary film is a powerful medium that can be used for social change. This paper explores the ways in which documentary film can be used to decrease health disparities and improve public health. Specifically it provides the scientific evidence and theoretical framework for the creation of the documentary film, Food Stamped. Similar to other popular documentary films such …

A Discussion Of Ethical Issues In The Case Of Baby Fae, Sean Moore
A Discussion Of Ethical Issues In The Case Of Baby Fae, Sean Moore
JCCC Honors Journal
Medical professionals are presented with numerous ethical questions that need answering on an almost daily basis. In this paper, the story of Baby Fae is used as a vehicle to discuss ethical issues. This case highlights the core ethical question regarding the taking of an innocent animal’s life to attempt to save the life of an innocent human. It has been more than twenty-six years since Baby Fae lived and died with a baboon heart keeping her blood flowing and her body alive. Presented in this paper are the facts, simply stated, regarding an historical event that had a profound …
Unfreedom In Paradise: Examining Race, Citizenship, And Anti-Haitianism In The Dominican Republic, Kristen C. Holmes
Unfreedom In Paradise: Examining Race, Citizenship, And Anti-Haitianism In The Dominican Republic, Kristen C. Holmes
Open Access Theses
In the Dominican Republic, the memory of the Haitian conquest and annexation of the nation from 1822 until independence on February 27, 1844, along with the solidification of the anti-Haitian nationalist rhetoric of the 1920s and 30s, have fueled deep-seated animosity toward Haitians. Many Dominicans continue to hold strong anti-Haitian attitudes, and negative views of blackness pervade much of Dominican popular discourse, as well as ideas of beauty and social propriety. Lamentably, these negative attitudes toward Haitianness, which has become synonymous with blackness and vice versa, have spread far beyond informal conversations in private households, permeating the political realm as …

When Gardner-Webb’s current Missionary in Residence, Mike Boone, first sensed a call to ministry, it never occurred to him that he could be something other than a preacher. “I wish someone had told me to sit down and ask myself, ‘What do I like to do?’,” Boone says. ” I’ve always loved working outside, working with plants. I love to see things grow. But I didn’t know I could use that for ministry.” God knew better.

Income Inequality And Spatial Distribution : Firm Location, Product Quality And Welfare Of Poor., Namrata Gulati Dr.
Doctoral Theses
The key idea explored in this thesis is the following: though being poor in itself is a huge disadvantage, the situation might be influenced considerably by the type of neighbourhood the poor lives in as private establishments like educational institutions, health care facilities or credit institutions take both the location and income mix of people into account while making strategic decisions like whether to enter into the neighbourhood at all, and, upon entry, what price and quality to choose for their products and services. Is staying with the rich a virtue for the poor or a source of resentment? Are …

Examining The Efficacy Of Conjoint Behavioral Consultation For Health Behaviors Of Children With Obesity, Carrie Alisha Semke
College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
An estimated 17.1% of children and adolescents ages 2-19 are obese (Ogden et al., 2006). Obesity is linked to adverse physical, psychosocial, and academic consequences for children. Treatments that collaboratively involve individuals in the child’s microsystems (e.g., home, school) result in improved health outcomes. Few studies have mutually involved both parents and school personnel in treatments. Conjoint Behavioral Consultation (CBC; Sheridan & Kratochwill, 2008) is an indirect service-delivery model that joins microsystems to address child concerns, and provides a model for delivering comprehensive treatments to improve the health behaviors of children with obesity. No previous studies have investigated CBC for …

Iraqi Postgraduate Medical Journal
ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is a chronic musculoskeletal syndrome; almost invariably, symptoms persist at 5- and 10-year follow-ups. Several studies reported the importance of trace elements on the immune system. It plays an important role in physiological processes that are crucial for normal functioning of the immune system. Fibromyalgia could be the result of an over-active immune system, the immune system works to protect the body by attacking bacteria, viruses, and other foreign cells. When over-active, the immune system can cause severe inflammation and pain. OBJECTIVE: The main objective of this study is the association between the levels of …

Background: The peak shift model predicts that the age-profile of a pathogen’s prevalence depends upon its transmission rate, peaking earlier in populations with higher transmission and declining as partial immunity is acquired. Helminth infections are associated with increased immunoglobulin E (IgE), which may convey partial immunity and influence the peak shift. Although studies have noted peak shifts in helminths, corresponding peak shifts in total IgE have not been investigated, nor has the age-patterning been carefully examined across populations. We test for differences in the agepatterning of IgE between two South American forager-horticulturalist populations and the United States: the Tsimane …
Paradigm And Paradox: Education For All And The Inclusion Of Children With Disabilities In Cambodia, Maya Kalyanpur Phd
Paradigm And Paradox: Education For All And The Inclusion Of Children With Disabilities In Cambodia, Maya Kalyanpur Phd
School of Leadership and Education Sciences: Faculty Scholarship
In keeping with international guidelines and to meet the target of Education for All (EFA) by 2015, the Cambodian government, with assistance from non‐government and aid organisations, has instituted several initiatives towards including children with disabilities in the educational mainstream. This paper examines these efforts within the context of current socio‐political development and the general educational system in Cambodia, and argues that the cultural traditions of elitism and social hierarchy and the uniquely post‐Khmer Rouge context of severely limited human resources are paradoxical to the value of universal access and quality imbedded in EFA and inclusive education. It concludes that …

Disability, Vulnerability And Citizenship: To What Extent Is Education A Protective Mechanism For Children With Disabilities In Countries Affected By Conflict?, Jean-Francois Trani, Maria Kett, Parul Bakhshi, Nicola Bailey
Brown School Faculty Publications
Humanitarian crises as a result of conflict are often characterised by failure of the social contract between the state and its citizens. For a variety of reasons, children with disabilities are often particularly vulnerable in time of humanitarian crisis. This paper draws on research undertaken by the authors in a series of countries affected by conflict, and looks at how the politics and policies of such countries, and the humanitarian and development agencies working in them, continue to exclude children with disabilities from formal and informal education structures. It will be argued that this exclusion not only impedes progress on …

Exemplar Versus Base Rate Information Messages: Effect On African-Americans’ Intentions Toward Signing A Donor Card, Aisha O’Mally
Theses
This study examines factors that may play a role in moderating the influence of a message on African-Americans to become organ donors. The message and sender were both manipulated to examine the impact of exemplars versus base rates within the message as well as the race of the sender. An anthropomorphic agent was used to present information about organ donation. Respondents completed a pre-test survey, viewed a short video, and then completed a post-test. There was no significant evidence found that either base rate or exemplar information influenced African-Americans to become organ donors. The expectation that participants would identify more …

Critical Components Of Suicide Prevention Programs For Colleges And Universities: A Delphi Study, Colleen A. Johnson
Theses and Dissertations
Despite debate over whether or not college student suicide rates are greater or less than similar age groups not enrolled in higher education, the rates of college students experiencing suicide ideation, attempting suicide, and successfully committing suicide are indeed rising. A steady increase in these rates over the last 15 years is evidence that this is an issue of great concern that needs further investigation and action. This study was focused on investigating what college and university counseling center employees with expertise in the development and implementation of suicide prevention programs believe to be critical components of an all-encompassing, workable …

Salah satu tujuan yang hendak dicapai oleh World Health Organization pada tahun 2000 adalah health for all by year 2000.
