Innate And Learned Preferences For Sweet Taste During Childhood, Alison K. Ventura, Julie A. Mennella Jul 2011

Innate And Learned Preferences For Sweet Taste During Childhood, Alison K. Ventura, Julie A. Mennella

Kinesiology and Public Health

Purpose of review: In nature, carbohydrates are a source of energy often equated with sweetness, the detection of which is associated with powerful hedonic appeal. Intakes of processed carbohydrates in the form of added sugars and sugar-sweetened beverages have risen consistently among all age groups over the last two decades. In this review, we describe the biological underpinnings that drive the consumption of sweet-tasting foods among pediatric populations.

Recent findings: Scientific literature suggests that children's liking for all that is sweet is not solely a product of modern-day technology and advertising but reflects their basic biology. In fact, heightened preference …

Invertebrate Zooid Polymorphism: Hydractinia Polyclina And Pagurus Longicarpus Interactions Mediated Through Spiralzooids, Charlotte M. Regula-Whitefield Jul 2011

Invertebrate Zooid Polymorphism: Hydractinia Polyclina And Pagurus Longicarpus Interactions Mediated Through Spiralzooids, Charlotte M. Regula-Whitefield

All Theses And Dissertations

Evaluating the net interaction between symbionts can be challenging when one participant is a colonial animal with polymorphic zooids, because each zooid type has unique functions. The colonial hydroid Hydractinia polyclina has three distinct zooid types, each of which contributes particular components to the interaction with host hermit crabs. Of these three zooid types, the function of spiralzooids is not well understood. Previously, spiralzooids have been proposed to contribute a strong negative interaction component by directly reducing their host hermit crab’s reproductive output. However, this hypothesis is not supported by past or current data. I propose that spiralzooids instead function …

Gender-Responsive Budgeting And Its Impact On The Status Of Women And Men In Pasay City, Divina M. Edralin Jul 2011

Gender-Responsive Budgeting And Its Impact On The Status Of Women And Men In Pasay City, Divina M. Edralin

DLSU Business & Economics Review

This study on Gender-Responsive Budgeting is based primarily on the Community-Based Monitoring System (CMBS) individual-level (more than 263,000 individuals) and household-level (more than 65,000 households) data of Pasay City for 2005. Other supplemental information from the documents of the different offices of the City Government was used to answer the objectives of the study. However, the lack of disaggregated data based on gender and age from the CBMS database and the Pasay City Government reports made it difficult to substantially determine whether the City’s programs and budgets have been responsive to gender differentials in the different aspects of quality of …

Romantic Paternalism In Philippine Labor Law – Revisiting The Tradition, Realizing Its Folly, And Proposing Reconstruction In The Light Of American Experience, Emily Sanchez Salcedo Jul 2011

Romantic Paternalism In Philippine Labor Law – Revisiting The Tradition, Realizing Its Folly, And Proposing Reconstruction In The Light Of American Experience, Emily Sanchez Salcedo

DLSU Business & Economics Review

This article analyzes the paternalist legal framework of Philippine labor policies and its role in the subordination of working women in the country. It presents the inconsistency between the Philippines’ constitutional declarations of adherence to gender equality against a backdrop of paternalist labor laws that remain untouched by the legislature and uncorrected by the judiciary. It goes on to explore the evolution of American principles on the subject and explains how the latter jurisdiction similarly started with paternalist stance but gradually moved towards more enlightened principles of fairness for the sexes in the field of work. The paper urges key …

Acute Arginine Supplementation Fails To Improve Muscle Endurance Or Affect Blood Pressure Responses To Resistance Training, Beau K. Greer, Brett T. Jones

All PTHMS Faculty Publications

Dietary supplement companies claim that arginine supplements acutely enhance skeletal muscular endurance. The purpose of this study was to determine whether acute arginine a-ketoglutarate supplementation (AAKG) will affect local muscle endurance of the arm and shoulder girdle or the blood pressure (BP) response to anaerobic exercise. Twelve trained college-aged men (22.6 +/- 3.8 years) performed 2 trials of exercise separated by at least 1 week. At 4 hours before, and 30 minutes before exercise, a serving of an AAKG supplement (3,700 mg arginine alpha-ketoglutarate per serving) or placebo was administered. Resting BP was assessed pre-exercise after 16 minutes of seated …

Introduction: Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) causes maternal and fetal complications. It is treated by diet control or insulin injections. Monitoring of treatment is to check sugar levels, which can be checked at 1 or 2 hours after meals. However, there is not sufficient evidence regarding the appropriate time for follow up and monitoring the maternal and fetal complications. This study aimed to compare the incidence of major complications in mothers and infants in the group treated with the target blood glucose level at 1 hour or 2 hours after meals.

Method: The study designed as prospective study. 106 pregnant women …

Medical Pluralism In Morocco: The Cultural, Religious, Historical And Political-Economic Determinants Of Health And Choice., Tyler Martinson Jul 2011

Medical Pluralism In Morocco: The Cultural, Religious, Historical And Political-Economic Determinants Of Health And Choice., Tyler Martinson

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Morocco is a culturally diverse intersection between the African continent, the Arab world and Europe. This multiplicity is mirrored in the country’s pluralistic medical system and beliefs surrounding the concepts of illness and health. Explanations of health are endorsed by culturally specific knowledge and are then naturalized and taken as objective. A synthesis of theoretical descriptions and political-economic of medical pluralism, along with historical analysis, explains the presence of multiple health practices and how a person’s choice of medical practice is heavily influenced by dynamic socio-cultural, religious, historical, political and economic factors. This study will help improve practitioner/client narratives of …

The Complexities Of Wolf Spider Communication: Exploring Courtship Signal Function In Rabidosa Rabida, Dustin J. Wilgers Jul 2011

The Complexities Of Wolf Spider Communication: Exploring Courtship Signal Function In Rabidosa Rabida, Dustin J. Wilgers

School of Biological Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Evidence of signal complexity is seemingly pervasive across animal communication systems. Exploring signal function may provide insight into how these displays evolved and are maintained. This dissertation examines the courtship signal function in a grassland wolf spider. Rabidosa rabida lives in an extremely complex environment, and males use complex displays incorporating both visual and seismic modalities. Using several approaches I provide insight into the content and efficacy of the various signal components, as well as how variation in these displays influence female mating decisions in isolation and combined.

First, I manipulated male and female body condition using diet quantity manipulations …

In Vitro Micropropagation Of Medicinal Plants By Tissue Culture, Yaadwinder Sidhu

The Plymouth Student Scientist

Tissue culturing of medicinal plants is widely used to produce active compounds for herbal and pharmaceutical industries. Conservation of genetic material of many threatened medicinal plants also involves culturing techniques. This work reviews in vitro micropropagation techniques and gives examples of various commercially important medicinal plants. The effect of media formulations and culturing techniques on the growth and multiplication of medicinal plants; and on the production of secondary metabolites is also reviewed. Another method of obtaining secondary metabolites is biotransformation; some famous pharmaceuticals obtained by this method are discussed briefly.

Images Of Experience: Decolonizing Medicine, Colleen Hill Patton Jul 2011

Images Of Experience: Decolonizing Medicine, Colleen Hill Patton

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The experiences of illness and trauma are vivid examples of a discontinuity that separates us from those that surround us. In seeking treatment, we enter a very foreign culture, regardless of how long or of how serious our injury or illness. We are disconnected from our personal and private lives and are placed within a cultural group bearing a separate set of beliefs and practices. Practitioners of medicine make up a distinct culture. This culture is formed as a site of discontinuity in a large part through the experiences of medical education from that of the experiences of the one …

House Fly (Musca Domestica L.) Temporal And Spatial Immune Response To Streptococcus Pyogenes And Salmonella Typhimurium: Role Of Pathogen Density In Bacterial Fate, Persistence And Transmission, Rabecca Chifanzwa

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

House flies (Musca domestica L), feed and breed in decomposing organic waste and therefore are constantly in contact with different species of microorganisms. Because house flies live in close proximity to human and animal habitats, they pose a danger of transmitting pathogenic microorganisms from diseased sources to new environments. To elucidate pathogen vector potential of house flies, this study investigated dose-dependent survivability of GFPexpressing Streptococcus pyogenes and Salmonella typhimurium SR11 within the fly alimentary canal both spatially via epifluorescence microscopy and quantitatively via culture-recovery. Adult house flies were fed known amounts of bacteria (high or low dose), and were dissected …

Patterns Of Transience, Sex Bias, And Body Mass In Open-Habitat Rodent Populations, Stephen Edward Rice

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

Rodents are assumed to live their lives in circumscribed (natal) areas with males being more prone to disperse than females and juveniles more prone to disperse than adults. To test these assumptions we examined the initial captures of geographic populations of hispid cotton rat, meadow vole, prairie vole, and marsh rice rat obtained through capture-mark-recapture methods. Capture records were obtained from Kansas and Illinois from long-term studies, and through live-trapping in Chesapeake, Virginia. I evaluated proportions of residents and transients, adults and juveniles, and males and females for significant differences among seasons, years, and geographic locations. The overall body masses …

Fenfluramine reduces hunger and promotes body weight loss by increasing central serotonin (5-HT) signaling. More recently, neuropeptides have been linked to the regulation of feeding behavior, metabolism and body weight. To examine possible interactions between 5-HT and neuropeptides in appetite control, fenfluramine (200 nmol/0.5 μl/side) was administered directly into the hypothalamic paraventricular nuclei (PVN) of male rats. Bilateral fenfluramine produced significant hypophagia and increased expression of PVN corticotropin releasing factor (CRF) mRNA and neuropeptide Y (NPY) mRNA in the arcuate nucleus within the first hour after drug administration. Fenfluramine's effects on feeding behavior and mRNA expression were blocked by PVN …
