Oncology Nurses' Impact Scores For Obstacles And Supportive Behaviors At The End Of Life, Joan M. Collett

Theses and Dissertations

Introduction: Oncology nurses provide end-of-life (EOL) care to their patients daily. Oncology nurses' perceptions regarding how to provide quality care to dying patients could be an important addition to the ongoing research on quality EOL care. The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of specific obstacle and supportive behaviors in EOL care as perceived by hospital-based oncology nurses. This study extended the work of Beckstrand, Moore, Callister, and Bond (2009).

Methods: A 69-item questionnaire adapted from previous studies (Beckstrand & Kirchhoff, 2005; Beckstrand, Smith, Heaston, & Bond, 2008) was sent to 1,000 nurses who were members of …

Oat Snp Marker Discovery And Mapping Based On 454 Pyrosequencing Of Genome-Reduced Avena Magna Murphy Et Terrell, Rachel Rebecca Redman Jul 2011

Oat Snp Marker Discovery And Mapping Based On 454 Pyrosequencing Of Genome-Reduced Avena Magna Murphy Et Terrell, Rachel Rebecca Redman

Theses and Dissertations

The size and complexity of the oat genomes (Avena L., x = 7) have made genetic studies, including the discovery of molecular markers, difficult. Recent attention to these species has resulted in the development of many DArT -based markers in the tetraploid A. magna Murphy et Terrill (2n = 28, CCDD genomes), along with numerous RFLP's, SSR's, DArT's, and EST-based SNPs in hexaploid A. sativa L. (2n = 42, AACCDD). Here we report the first SNP markers for tetraploid oat based on genome reduction and high-throughput pyrosequencing in two inbred lines of A. magna: A-169 (wild) and Ba …

Systematic Analysis Of Diguanylate Cyclases That Promote Biofilm Formation By Pseudomonas Fluorescens Pf0-1, Peter D. Newell, Shiro Yoshioka, Kelli L. Hvorecny, Russell D. Monds, George A. O'Toole Jul 2011

Systematic Analysis Of Diguanylate Cyclases That Promote Biofilm Formation By Pseudomonas Fluorescens Pf0-1, Peter D. Newell, Shiro Yoshioka, Kelli L. Hvorecny, Russell D. Monds, George A. O'Toole

Dartmouth Scholarship

Cyclic di-GMP (c-di-GMP) is a broadly conserved, intracellular second-messenger molecule that regulates biofilm formation by many bacteria. The synthesis of c-di-GMP is catalyzed by diguanylate cyclases (DGCs) containing the GGDEF domain, while its degradation is achieved through the phosphodiesterase activities of EAL and HD-GYP domains. c-di-GMP controls biofilm formation by Pseudomonas fluorescens Pf0-1 by promoting the cell surface localization of a large adhesive protein, LapA. LapA localization is regulated posttranslationally by a c-di-GMP effector system consisting of LapD and LapG, which senses cytoplasmic c-di-GMP and modifies the LapA protein in the outer membrane. Despite the apparent requirement for c-di-GMP for …

Master of Public Health Capstone Presentations

The goal of this study was to analyze sugar-sweetened beverage tax policy as one strategy to fight America’s obesity epidemic. Obesity is an enormous problem that plagues individuals worldwide. The prevalence of obesity is high in this country, exceeding 25% in 33 states. In Pennsylvania in 2009, 27.7% of adults were labeled as obese. Additionally, there are many more Philadelphians who are overweight or obese (900,000) than who are at a healthy weight (600,000). Obesity is extremely complex and has several causes. One cause of obesity and the main concern of this study is the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages. Sugar-sweetened …

Emerging Dynamics Of Human Campylobacteriosis In Southern Ireland, Susan Bullman, Daniel Corcoran, James O'Leary, Derry O'Hare, Brigid Lucey, Roy D. Sleator

Department of Biological Sciences Publications

Infections with Campylobacter spp. pose a significant health burden worldwide. The significance of Campylobacter jejuni/Campylobacter coli infection is well appreciated but the contribution of non-C. jejuni/C. coli spp. to human gastroenteritis is largely unknown. In this study, we employed a two-tiered molecular study on 7194 patient faecal samples received by the Microbiology Department in Cork University Hospital during 2009. The first step, using EntericBio® (Serosep), a multiplex PCR system, detected Campylobacter to the genus level. The second step, utilizing Campylobacter species-specific PCR identified to the species level. A total of 340 samples were confirmed as Campylobacter genus positive, 329 of …

Antecedents And Continuity Of Compliance In Preschoolers, Lauren Gindin Jul 2011

Antecedents And Continuity Of Compliance In Preschoolers, Lauren Gindin

Master's Theses

Self-regulation, and compliance behavior specifically, has been implicated in the development of successful socialization. Difficulty self-regulating has led to negative outcomes in areas such as academic success and mental health, and a number of possible contributors, such as temperament, maternal sensitivity and attachment, have been identified. In this study, we examined these possible predictors of preschool compliance behavior through causal modeling utilizing a large and diverse longitudinal dataset from the NICHD Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development. We aimed to predict compliance and delay of gratification performance in children across 2, 3 and 4.5 years of age by …

Kohlrabi, Brianne Sherwood Jul 2011

Kohlrabi, Brianne Sherwood

USU Student Organic Farm Newsletter

Kohlrabi may look like it's from another planet with the weird stems coming out of it's bulb and the unique flavor, but it's actually really, really tasty. Honestly, it's one of my personal favorites from the entire garden. Although kohlrabi is very popular in Eastern Europe, it's not very popular in the Western world YET, but will most likely gain popularity. It's being seen in more and more farmer's markets across the country. I would say the flavor is more of a mix between broccoli and cabbage with the texture of a radish. So really, it's like eating three vegetables …

Coronary Heart Disease And Fish Oil, Talya Spivack, Md Jul 2011

Coronary Heart Disease And Fish Oil, Talya Spivack, Md

The Medicine Forum

Introduction

The benefits of fish consumption on cardiovascular disease has been suggested since the early 1980s in studies that demonstrated Greenland Eskimo’s low rates of death from coronary heart disease.1 This was followed by another observational study that demonstrated the same findings in Japan.2 The proposed linkage between these two groups of people is their propensity to consume fish. Since then many studies have examined the relationship between fish consumption and coronary heartdisease (CHD) mortality rates. Current thinking suggests that the primary benefit of consuming fish is secondary to the omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil.

Changes In Life History Within An Individual's Lifetime, Eric J. Billman Jul 2011

Changes In Life History Within An Individual's Lifetime, Eric J. Billman

Theses and Dissertations

A central goal of life history theory is to understand the selective factors that generate the diversity of reproductive patterns observed in nature. Within lifetime changes in reproductive investment will determine an organism's fitness; however, this area of life history theory has received less attention than comparisons among population that characterize life history traits as a single population mean. Reproductive allocation can be affected by multiple cues; the integration of these cues across an organism's lifetime generates the diversity in life history strategies observed in nature. Life history studies should examine the interacting effects of multiple cues on life history …

Spinal Implant With Customized And Non-Linear Stiffness, Eric Ray Dodgen Jul 2011

Spinal Implant With Customized And Non-Linear Stiffness, Eric Ray Dodgen

Theses and Dissertations

There is a need for spinal implants that have nonlinear stiffness to provide stabilization if the spine loses stiffness through injury, degeneration, or surgery. There is also a need for spinal implants to be customizable for individual needs, and to be small enough to be unobtrusive once implanted. Past and ongoing work that defines the effects of degeneration on the torque rotation curve of a functional spinal unit (FSU) were used to produce a spinal implant which could meet these requirements. This thesis proposes contact-aided inserts to be used with the FlexSuRe™ spinal implant to create a nonlinear stiffness. Moreover, …
