Postural Compensations And Subjective Complaints Due To Backpack Loads And Wear Time In Schoolchildren Aged 8 To 11, Frances Elizabeth Kistner Jul 2011

Postural Compensations And Subjective Complaints Due To Backpack Loads And Wear Time In Schoolchildren Aged 8 To 11, Frances Elizabeth Kistner

Open Access Dissertations

Backpacks are used by more than 90% of schoolchildren worldwide and over 40 million students in the United States on a regular basis. The carriage of loaded backpacks is associated with kinematic and physiological changes, as well as complaints of neck and back pain. Since a history of backpain in childhood is the strongest predictor of having musculoskeletal discomfort and back pain as an adult, development of back pain due to backpack use is of prognostic concern. The purpose of this dissertation was to examine the effects of backpack weights (up to 20% body weight (BW)) on children’s posture, subjective …

The Economy-Crime Relationship Revisited: The Significance Of Recent Macroeconomic Conditions And Social Policy Changes For Child Poverty And Youth Violence Trends, White Nicole

Dissertations

The relationship between economic deprivation and violent crime has been one of the most widely studied in the field of criminology, yet little is known about the impact of recent macroeconomic conditions and welfare reform policies on the poverty-youth violence relationship. Therefore, the current study utilizes data from the 1993-2004 National Crime Victimization Survey to assess the association between poverty and youth violent victimization trends variously disaggregated by race, ethnicity, and family structure, and the impact of welfare reform and macroeconomic conditions on this relationship. In addition, the potential impact of welfare reform on the individual-level relationship between poverty and …

Evidence For Genotoxicity Of 3-Hydroxyanthranilic Acid In The Presence Of A Metal Cofactor Copper In Vitro, Gopi Srinivas Gadupudi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Tryptophan metabolites anthranilic acid (AA) and 3-hydroxyanthranilic acid (3-OHAA) have been implicated in the etiology of bladder cancer. Metal-mediated activation of these compounds into mutagens was tested using a plasmid relaxation assay at increasing concentrations of copper (Cu (II) at 5 µM-20 µM in the presence of plasmid pSP-72. One hundred µM 3-OHAA induced plasmid relaxation in the presence of metal cofactor Cu (II) at a concentration as low as 5 µM. The Cu (II) mediated mutagenic activation of 3-OHAA was further investigated using Ames Salmonella/microsome mutagenicity assay with reactive oxygen species (ROS) sensitive tester strain Salmonella TA102. A significant …

Investigation Of In-Package Ozonation: The Effectiveness Of Ozone To Inactive Salmonella Enteritidis On Raw, Shell Eggs, Austin Donner

The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research

Food production, handling, and distribution practices pose a constant threat to the quality and safety of food products. The objective of this research is to evaluate an innovative in-package ozonation process to reduce Salmonella enteritidis on raw, shell eggs. Previous research has shown that in-package ozonation eliminates contaminants from outside sources, reduces pathogens, and extends shelf life. In this study, raw, shell eggs were inoculated with Salmonella enteritidis and exposed to ozonation treatment. Microbial recoveries were then tested to determine bacterial reductions. Measurements included: relative humidity (34 percent at 5oC), surface temperatures (oC), ozone concentrations, bacterial …

Ganglioneuroblastoma Of The Posterior Mediastinum: A Case Report., Saulat Fatimi, Samira A Bawany, Awais Ashfaq

Section of Cardiothoracic Surgery

Introduction:Ganglioneuroblastoma is a rare peripheral neuroblastic tumor that is derived from developing neuronal cells of the sympathetic nervous system, and is found mostly, but not exclusively, in babies and young children.

Case Presentation:

To the best of our knowledge, there have been no previously reported cases of ganglioneuroblastoma of the mediastinum from Pakistan. We present a case of ganglioneuroblastoma in an eight-year-old Pakistani Sindhi boy incidentally found to have a large posterior mediastinal mass that on biopsy initially looked like ganglioneuroma. He underwent successful excision of the mediastinal mass and remained stable post-operatively. Final pathology findings showed a ganglioneuroblastoma. …

Bayesian And Meta- Analyses Of Cell-Cycle Gene Expression Data, Mehmet Kocak

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Gene expression experiments conducted under a variety of conditions can allow for concurrent tests of more than one hypothesis. It is common for such experiments to be conducted independently by different researchers, using possibly different microarray platforms. In the second and fourth chapter of this thesis, we propose a differential meta-analytic procedure to pool the data from various sources and test the relative significance of the hypotheses under consideration. The specific application made in this thesis is to 10 time-course cell-cycle experiments on fission yeast S. Pombe (Oliva et al., 2005; Peng et al., 2005; Rustici et al., 2004), and …

Innovative Methods To Determine Material Properties Of Cartilaginous Tissues And Application For Tissue Engineering, Tai-Yi Yuan

Open Access Dissertations

Low back pain is one of the major health concerns in the US. It affects up to 80% of the population at some time during their lives. It not only causes discomfort to patients and affects their physical ability but also has a huge economic impact on society. Although the cause of low back pain is still poorly understood, it is implicated that degeneration of the intervertebral disc is the primary factor. Currently, researchers are trying to use tissue engineering approaches to develop new treatments capable of removing the degenerated disk and replacing it with a biological substitute. However, to …

Eastern Coyote/Coywolf (Canis Latrans X Lycaon) Movement Patterns: Lessons Learned In Urbanized Ecosystems, Jonathan G. Way

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

Activity and movement patterns represent a fundamental aspect of a species natural history. Twenty four-hour movements of eastern coyotes or coywolves (Canis latrans x lycaon; hereafter eastern coyote for consistency purposes) ranged up to 31.9 linear km and averaged 23.5 + 7.3 (SD) km from 5-14 radio-fixes during each 24 hr monitoring period. Coyotes moved mostly at night and through altered open areas (e.g., powerlines, dumps) more than expected when compared to residential and natural areas. Coyotes inhabiting urbanized areas generally use residential areas for traveling and/or foraging. With large daily (or more aptly, nightly) movement patterns, resident …

Scale-Up Of Algae Growth System To Cleanse Wastewater And Produce Oils For Biodiesel Production, Eric Lannan Jul 2011

Scale-Up Of Algae Growth System To Cleanse Wastewater And Produce Oils For Biodiesel Production, Eric Lannan

Theses

Biofuels are a currently a very hot topic with significant interest in both ethanol and biodiesel production. These fuels can be used in current internal combustion engines with little or no modification. Biodiesel can be produced from a variety of sources. One of the most promising sources is microalgae. In some species of algae, oil or lipids can account for as much as 70% of their total biomass. Unfortunately, the cost to produce biodiesel from algae is much too high to compete with petroleum-based fuels. To reduce the production cost of algae, wastewater has been discovered to be an excellent …

Role Of Tyk2 In The Development Of Beige Cells, Samantha Umali Jul 2011

Role Of Tyk2 In The Development Of Beige Cells, Samantha Umali

Theses and Dissertations

Obesity results from an excess of adipose tissue and is a major risk factor for type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. Adipose tissue exists in two main forms: white adipose tissue (WAT), which stores energy as triglycerides, and brown adipose tissue (BAT), which dissipates stored energy as heat. White adipose tissue is composed of several subcutaneous and visceral depots, each possessing distinct molecular and functional characteristics. Brown-like adipocytes can emerge in WAT depots in response to cold or beta-adrenergic stimulation. These cells have been called “beige” or “brite” (brown-in-white) cells. The reduction of obesity in mice treated with beta-adrenergic …

The Role Of Psychological Distress, Eating Styles, Dietary Intake, And Gender In Cardiometabolic Risk, Virginia Tai Coryell Jul 2011

The Role Of Psychological Distress, Eating Styles, Dietary Intake, And Gender In Cardiometabolic Risk, Virginia Tai Coryell

Open Access Dissertations

Approximately one-third of U.S. adults are at increased risk for life-threatening diseases such as atherosclerosis and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Such individuals are considered healthy without any diagnosed cardiometabolic conditions but may have a constellation of cardiometabolic complications that include obesity, glucose intolerance, hyperinsulinemia, dyslipidemia, hypertension, insulin resistance, and hypertriglyceridemia. When most of these preclinical conditions comorbidly occur, the condition has been referred to as metabolic syndrome (MetS). MetS is considered to reflect one or more early pathophysiological processes in cardiometabolic disease; however, the extent to which these complications and their underlying pathophysiology interact with behavioral factors such as stress, …

Crisis In Education: A Call To Act, Debra Walker Emery Jul 2011

Crisis In Education: A Call To Act, Debra Walker Emery

Dissertations

The current education system in the United States is riddled with difficulties which include an increasing demand for qualified teachers and persistently high attrition rates. Teachers are prone to low job satisfaction, low self-efficacy, as well as increased stress and burnout. Although these problems are widely discussed in the literature, scant intervention research is available. Additionally, existing interventions miss two key elements that may be especially relevant to the challenges faced by educators: acceptance and values. The current study examined the efficacy of acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) for reducing teacher burnout through a day-long professional development workshop. Thirty-five teachers …
