Understanding Hyperparathyroidism In Renal Disease, Rosemary Nwoko, Md, Kara Chenitz, Md Jul 2011

Understanding Hyperparathyroidism In Renal Disease, Rosemary Nwoko, Md, Kara Chenitz, Md

The Medicine Forum

The parathyroid glands are four pea-sized glands located onthe four corners of the thyroid gland. They secrete parathyroidhormone (PTH), which maintains calcium and phosphorushomeostasis. PTH regulates calcium such that when serumlevels of calcium fall too low, it increases the serum calciumlevel by stimulating more calcium release from the bones, increasing intestinal absorption of calcium and decreasingcalcium excretion into the urine. When the serum calciumnormalizes, the parathyroid gland shuts off the production ofPTH. An excess of PTH in the system throws off the calciumphosphorushomeostatic balance, resulting in various symptomsand clinical effects.

Congestive Heart Failure And Vitamin D Deficiency, Ankitkumar K. Patel, Md, Mph, Matthew Decaro, Md, Paul J. Mather, Md

The Medicine Forum

Introduction

Congestive heart failure (CHF) is a chronic medical condition whoseincidence is rising. The prevalence of CHF is approximately 1% to3% in Western countries. Despite innovations in medical therapy,CHF is associated with high morbidity and mortality rates.

CHF patients commonly experience muscle weakness and fatigueas two major symptoms. An altered intracellular handling ofionized calcium has been suggested to play a vital role in impairedmyocardial contraction. In isolated myocytes from patientswith end stage heart failure, systolic ionized calcium levelswere markedly decreased, while diastolic levels were elevated ascompared to healthy controls. In addition, digitalis and betablockermedical therapy is frequently used in CHF …

Sr-A Ligand And M-Csf Dynamically Regulate Sr-A Expression And Function In Primary Macrophages Via P38 Mapk Activation, Dejan Nikolic, Lindsay Calderon, Liqin Du, Steven R. Post

Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Inflammation is characterized by dynamic changes in the expression of cytokines, such as M-CSF, and modifications of lipids and proteins that result in the formation of ligands for Class A Scavenger Receptors (SR-A). These changes are associated with altered SR-A expression in macrophages; however, the intracellular signal pathways involved and the extent to which SR-A ligands regulate SR-A expression are not well defined. To address these questions, SR-A expression and function were examined in resident mouse peritoneal macrophages incubated with M-CSF or the selective SR-A ligand acetylated-LDL (AcLDL).

RESULTS: M-CSF increased SR-A expression and function, and required the specific …

Thin-Ideal Internalization, Body Misperception, And Their Association With Weight Control Behaviors Among Adolescent Girls, Erin Lindsey Moore Jul 2011

Thin-Ideal Internalization, Body Misperception, And Their Association With Weight Control Behaviors Among Adolescent Girls, Erin Lindsey Moore

Theses and Dissertations

Negative body image and preoccupation with weight are the norm for most women and girls in Western society, despite their potentially harmful consequences for psychological and physical wellness. While we know that many in this population experience negative feelings towards their bodies, we do not know if their beliefs about their body size are accurate and what effect a correct or incorrect assessment of one's body size has in terms of actual behavior. I examine this question among adolescent girls using data from the 2002 Health Behaviors in School-Age Children Survey. With a sample of 2,784 girls between the ages …

Coronary Heart Disease Prediction And Prevention, Dae Hyun Kim, Md, Mph, Andrew N. Lee, Md

The Medicine Forum

Introduction

Prediction of coronary heart disease (CHD) is based on multivariable risk equations developed from population-based observational studies in which people without clinical CHD at the initiation of study were examined and followed until their first CHD events. The risk equations from the Framingham Heart Study have been widely used in our clinical practice1-3 and research.4,5 The recent report of the third National Cholesterol Education Program-Adult Treatment Panel (NCEP-ATP) incorporated the Framingham risk equations to predict ten-year absolute CHD risk and to identify certain patients who are at high risk and more likely to benefit from primary prevention with aggressive …

The Molecular Mechanism Of Migraine, Kristin Dawn Watson Jul 2011

The Molecular Mechanism Of Migraine, Kristin Dawn Watson

Theses and Dissertations

Migraine is a common, episodic neurological disorder that includes headache, nausea and hypersensitivity to sensory stimuli. During the headache phase of migraine, migraine patients can be especially hypersensitive to thermal stimuli. The unpredictable and episodic nature of migraine makes it difficult to treat and much of the mechanism of migraine has yet to be elucidated. A T44A substitution in casein kinase 1δ is inherited with migraine with aura. A transgenic mouse model suggests that animals with this mutation exhibit increased sensitivity to thermal stimuli after injection with nitroglycerin (NTG). We performed behavior assays that measure animal responses to thermal stimuli, …

Shared Waters: Catalyst For Cooperation, Vahid Alavian Jul 2011

Shared Waters: Catalyst For Cooperation, Vahid Alavian

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

Water is a unique resource. It is critical to the functioning
of human society and ecosystems, and there are no
substitutes. As the demand for water has begun to
outstrip the available supply, competition for this limited
resource has intensified. When faced with scarcity,
nations experience real limits to their growth, declines in
their human health, and degradation of their resource base
- all destabilizing factors in international relations. This
situation can become particularly acute, and has the
potential to become explosive when nations compete for
water resources. Meanwhile, some countries have begun
to realize the benefits of cooperatively developing …

Diagnostic Tests For Inflammatory Bowel Diseases, Otto Phanstiel, Navneet Kaur Jul 2011

Diagnostic Tests For Inflammatory Bowel Diseases, Otto Phanstiel, Navneet Kaur

UCF Patents

Polyamines are important cellular growth factors and are involved in inflammation. Both spermidine and N1-acetylspermine were identified as statistically elevated in inflammatory bowel tissue samples. Moreover, spermidine levels were also elevated in circulating mono nuclear cells of IBD patients compared to healthy controls. This observation provides the opportunity to develop an assay, which measures these polyamine markers in patient blood, patient bodily fluids, feces and/or in tissue biopsies obtained from patients. This patent claims the concept of measuring these specific markers and their use as diagnostic tools for monitoring and diagnosing disease processes such as inflammatory bowel disease and cancer.

From Qualitative Data To Instrument Development: The Women's Breast Conflict Scale, Eileen Thomas

The Qualitative Report

The purpose of this article is to describe the initial development of the Women's Breast Conflict Scale, a predictive instrument designed to identify women who may be least likely to follow recommended mammography screening guidelines. This new instrument incorporates self/body image, teasing, family norms and values, and societal/media influence - themes identified from three qualitative studies and five years of qualitative data collection. The themes aided in the development of a conceptual model (Breast Conflict), which provided the framework for this instrument. A description of the traditional steps involved in instrument development is provided to aid qualitative researchers in the …

Comparison Of Monotherapy With Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme Inhibitors Or Angtiotensin Receptor Blockers In Improving Health Outcomes Among Veteran Patients With Type 2 Diabetes, Heather Campbell Jul 2011

Comparison Of Monotherapy With Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme Inhibitors Or Angtiotensin Receptor Blockers In Improving Health Outcomes Among Veteran Patients With Type 2 Diabetes, Heather Campbell

Pharmaceutical Sciences ETDs

Diabetes is a world-wide epidemic; 90-95% of diabetes cases are type 2 in nature. Albuminuria and hypertension are risk factors of diabetes complications, specifically nephropathy and cardiovascular disease. Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs) or angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) are recommended as monotherapy to reduce albuminuria and hypertension. Because of this, we sought to compare patients with type 2 diabetes (P2DM) who received neither therapy to those who received either monotherapy for end-stage renal disease (ESRD), cardio- and cerebro- vascular disease, and all-cause mortality. Additionally, because there are very limited data on comparisons between ACEI and ARB therapies, none of which compare …

Reducing Pneumonia Related Death In Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Patients Through Improved Oral Health Care, Susan Wray Jones

Dental Hygiene ETDs

In patients diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), the primary pathological cause of death, as determined by autopsy, is pneumonia. Research associates poor oral health with an increased incidence of pneumonia. The incidence is further elevated in mechanically ventilated, disabled and high-risk individuals. A proactive approach in oral health care could mitigate the risk of pneumonia related deaths in patients with ALS. This study evaluated whether the dental needs of ALS patients were being met. Over a three-month period 121 ALS patients were surveyed regarding their oral health status. Both written and online survey formats were employed. ALS Association Multidisciplinary …

Development Of An Assessment Of Quantitative Literacy For Miami University, Rose Marie Ward, Monica C. Schneider, James D. Kiper Jul 2011

Development Of An Assessment Of Quantitative Literacy For Miami University, Rose Marie Ward, Monica C. Schneider, James D. Kiper

Numeracy

Quantitative Literacy is a competence as important as general literacy; yet, while writing requirements are seemingly ubiquitous across the college curriculum, quantitative literacy requirements are not. The current project provides preliminary evidence of the reliability and validity of a quantitative literacy measure suitable for delivery online. A sample of 188 undergraduate students from Miami University, a midsize university in the midwestern U.S., participated in the current study. Scores on the measure, were inversely related to statistical/mathematical anxiety measures, directly related to subjective assessment of numeracy, and did not differ across gender or year in school. The resulting measure provides a …

Master's Theses

ABSTRACT

Effects of Milk Processing on the Milk Fat Globule Membrane Constituents

Xiomara E. Elías-Argote

The milk fat globule membrane (MFGM) is avidly studied by many groups of scientists around the world due to its unprecedented nutritional and functional properties; however, limited research has been performed on the effects of milk processing on the chemical changes of the MFGM. Thus, this study highlights the changes that lipids and proteins undergo from the time milk leaves cow’s udders. Cooling (4 °C) was included along with subsequent pasteurization by different traditional thermal processes and cold pasteurization by pulse light ultra violet treatment. …

Identification Of Salt-Induced Changes In Leaf And Root Proteomes Of The Wild Tomato, Solanum Chilense, Suping Zhou, Roger J. Sauvé, Zong Liu, Sasikiran Reddy, Sarabjit Bhatti, Simon D. Hucko, Tara Fish, Theodore W. Thannhauser

Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Faculty Research

This article reports salt-induced changes in leaf and root proteomes after wild tomato (Solanum chilense) plants were treated with 200 mmNaCl. In leaf tissues, a total of 176 protein spots showed significant changes (P < 0.05), of which 104 spots were induced and 72 spots suppressed. Salt-induced proteins are associated with the following pathways: photosynthesis, carbohydrate metabolism, glyoxylate shunt, glycine cleavage system, branched-chain amino acid biosynthesis, protein folding, defense and cellular protection, signal transduction, ion transport, and antioxidant activities. Suppressed proteins belong to the following categories: oxidative phosphorylation pathway, photorespiration and protein translational machinery, oxidative stress, and ATPases. In root tissues, 106 protein spots changed significantly (P< 0.05) after the salt treatment, 63 spots were induced, and 43 suppressed by salt treatment. Salt-induced proteins are associated with the following functional pathways: regeneration of S-adenosyl methionine, protein folding, selective ion transport, antioxidants and defense mechanism, signal transduction and gene expression regulation, and branched-chain amino acid synthesis. Salt-suppressed proteins are receptor kinase proteins, peroxidases and germin-like proteins, malate dehydrogenase, and glycine dehydrogenase. In this study, different members of proteins were identified from leaf and root tissues after plants were subjected to salt treatment. These proteins represent …
