Grandparenting In Chinese Immigrant Families, Xiaolin Xie, Yan Xia
Grandparenting In Chinese Immigrant Families, Xiaolin Xie, Yan Xia
Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications
In light of the life course perspective, this semistructured interview study with 29 grandparents involved in the caregiving of their grandchildren in Chinese immigrant families revealed three major themes: intergenerational connectedness and continuity of cultural practices, role varieties and responsibilities, and adjustment and adaptation. Despite immigration, Chinese grandparents continued the tradition of providing care to grandchildren. Although the grandparent role entailed responsibilities and there were adjustments to make when living in the new place, overall, grandparents considered their caregiving experiences positive. Support to these grandparents, however, was needed at both family and community levels to ensure their stay in the …

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Faculty Papers
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the plasma concentrations of vitamin D and its association with plasma lipid profiles.
METHODS: Plasma vitamin D3 and lipid concentrations were measured in 119 female cynomolgus monkeys (premenopausal, n = 49; ovariectomized, n = 70) consuming approximately 1,000 IU per day of vitamin D3. In a subset of the ovariectomized monkeys (n = 23), vitamin D3 was remeasured after 6 months. The concentrations of vitamin D3 were analyzed as a continuous variable and were divided at the median into high (≥48 ng/mL) versus low (<48 ng>/mL) groupings.
RESULTS: Among the 119 …

Deoxynivalenol Biosynthesis-Related Gene Expression During Wheat Kernel Colonization By Fusarium Graminearum, Heather E. Hallen-Adams, Nancy Wenner, Gretchen A. Kuldau, Frances Trail
Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications
Deoxynivalenol (DON) is a potent mycotoxin and virulence factor produced by Fusarium graminearum. We examined the expression of the core DON biosynthetic gene Tri5 during wheat head infection of susceptible and resistant cultivars and susceptible cultivars treated with strobilurin fungicides (e.g. azoxystrobin). DON was quantified to correlate expression with toxin accumulation. The highest Tri5 expression relative to housekeeping genes occurred at the infection front. As infection progresses, earliest-infected kernels showed diminished relative Tri5 expression but Tri5 expression never ceased during the 21 days observed. Azoxystrobin treatment showed no significant effect on either relative Tri5 expression or DON quantity. The …

Proteases In Malaria Parasites - A Phylogenomic Perspective, Hong Cai, Rui Kuang, Jianying Gu, Yufeng Wang
Publications and Research
Malaria continues to be one of the most devastating global health problems due to the high morbidity and mortality it causes in endemic regions. The search for new antimalarial targets is of high priority because of the increasing prevalence of drug resistance in malaria parasites. Malarial proteases constitute a class of promising therapeutic targets as they play important roles in the parasite life cycle and it is possible to design and screen for specific protease inhibitors. In this mini-review, we provide a phylogenomic overview of malarial proteases. An evolutionary perspective on the origin and divergence of these proteases will provide …

Social Work And Conditional Cash Transfers In Latin America., Cindy Calvo
Social Work And Conditional Cash Transfers In Latin America., Cindy Calvo
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Conditional cash transfer (CCT) programs are a recent anti-poverty strategy in Latin America. CCT programs provide cash benefits to finance basic needs and foster investment in human capital to extremely poor households. These benefits are conditioned on certain behaviors, usually related to investments in nutrition, health, and education. In the literature, there is a recognizable lack of analyses from social science disciplines related to CCT program implications. This paper contributes in this arena by analyzing the particular role of social work in CCT anti-poverty programs. The educational element of these programs and its theoretical foundation based on the human capital …

The Spirit Of Matter In Büchner, Barbara Natalie Nagel
The Spirit Of Matter In Büchner, Barbara Natalie Nagel
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article "The Spirit of Matter in Büchner" Barbara Natalie Nagel investigates different vectors of Georg Büchner's materialism: historical, philosophical, ethical, physiological. The analysis of what Büchner presents to be a necessary link between physiology and revolution aims to show how Büchner has a tendency first to entangle two relatively static, binary oppositions — literal/figurative and material/spiritual — in order then to play them against one another. Büchner thus uses the dynamics of literalization to evoke necessity: for example, if the revolution is conceived of in physiological terms, then the will either has to become physiological or biology has …

You Don’T Know My Name: In Re Anonymous Online Speakers And The Right To Remain Cloaked In Cyberspace, Joshua Rich
Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review
The right to speak anonymously predates the Constitution, and the U.S. Supreme Court has long recognized it as protected under the First Amendment. So it was in line with a long tradition that, in 2007, several anonymous speakers posted comments on Internet message boards criticizing a business called Quixtar, which was embroiled in several lawsuits at the time. Before long, however, the posters’ comments became the subject of a legal conundrum: did Quixtar’s request to unmask the unknown authors during discovery outweigh the authors’ First Amendment right to remain cloaked? In ultimately answering that question, the Ninth Circuit upheld the …

The Impact Of Dynamic And Passive Standing On Bone Mineral Density And Appositional Growth In Immobilized Children, Megan Diane Damcott
The Impact Of Dynamic And Passive Standing On Bone Mineral Density And Appositional Growth In Immobilized Children, Megan Diane Damcott
Dissertations
The first discovery of the potential role that mechanical loading has on determining the strength of bone occurred in 1892. However, for almost a century after this discovery, the specific mechanisms influenced by mechanical loading remained locked in a mysterious 'black box'. Then in the 1960s, the 'black box' was opened and continued work has now unlocked the basic mechanisms involved in mechanical loading and whole-bone strength. This increased knowledge has spurred clinicians and researchers to investigate the impact of weight-bearing interventions on individuals with an increased risk of osteoporosis. The most common weight-bearing clinical intervention used in non-ambulant populations …
