Movelets: A Dictionary Of Movement, Jiawei Bai, Jeff Goldsmith, Brian Caffo, Thomas A. Glass, Ciprian M. Crainiceanu

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

Recent technological advances provide researchers a way of gathering real-time information on an individual’s movement through the use of wearable devices that record acceleration. In this paper, we propose a method for identifying activity types, like walking, standing, and resting, from acceleration data. Our approach decomposes movements into short components called “movelets”, and builds a reference for each activity type. Unknown activities are predicted by matching new movelets to the reference. We apply our method to data collected from a single, three-axis accelerometer and focus on activities of interest in studying physical function in elderly populations. An important technical advantage …

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

This study focuses on assessing differences between earned income tax credit (EITC) filers and non-filers, specifically, identifying general characteristics, examining willingness to participate in asset building programs, and identifying key factors affecting EITC filing status. The data were obtained from a convenience sample of respondents in South Central Alabama, and were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The results showed that many respondents did not know that the EITC could be used as an asset-building tool. Also, the results revealed that socioeconomic characteristics played a role in whether or not one filed for the EITC. Since many respondents did not know that …

Assembling The Poor People's Campaign (1968) Queer Activism And Economic Justice, Christina Juhász-Wood Aug 2011

Assembling The Poor People's Campaign (1968) Queer Activism And Economic Justice, Christina Juhász-Wood

American Studies ETDs

This thesis attempts to bring the Poor People's Campaign (PPC) of 1968 into contemporary discussions about queer scholarship and activism. The PPC assembled a diverse racial and ethnic constituency in an unprecedented way to produce a massive, national political campaign to end poverty. This complex assemblage was largely indecipherable to the press and many historians, which has contributed to the view that the campaign was a failure, particularly in relation to the civil rights movement . I describe how the mainstream gay rights movement appropriates the civil rights movement as normative to seek forms of national inclusion. I argue that …

Young Mothers And The Infant Feeding Decision : Participation In A Postpartum Breastfeeding Support Group, Rebecca Logue-Conroy

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This study explored whether young mothers who attend a postpartum breastfeeding support group are likely to breastfeed for six months and beyond. A focus group was conducted with twelve mothers ranging in age from 15 to 22 and included their children. The women were asked about their experience in the support group and their breastfeeding behaviors. They were also given a demographic questionnaire. The findings indicated that participants did find the support group to be helpful and most of the participants had chosen to breastfeed for at least six months. Discussion of the difficulty in conducting a focus group with …

Measuring The Cultural Competence Of Hospice Social Workers Using The Multicultural Counseling Self-Efficacy Scale-Racial Diversity Form, Revised Version For Use In Hospice Settings, Jessica Moore Begans Aug 2011

Measuring The Cultural Competence Of Hospice Social Workers Using The Multicultural Counseling Self-Efficacy Scale-Racial Diversity Form, Revised Version For Use In Hospice Settings, Jessica Moore Begans

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

Although about 40% of American deaths occur in hospice care, and although social workers are members of nearly all hospice teams, there is scant research on the cross-cultural practices and competence of hospice social workers. Before this study, no self-report cultural competence scale was available to measure the perceived cultural competence skills of hospice social workers. To address this issue, a validated cross-cultural competence scale, the Multicultural Counseling Self-Efficacy Scale – Racial Diversity (Sheu, 2005) was modified to reflect the functions of hospice social workers. The revised scale (Begans, 2011) was completed by 33 hospice social workers in a New …

Pattern Of Multivitamin Use : Prevalence And Predictors Among Pregnenat Women In New Mexico, Sizhu Liu Aug 2011

Pattern Of Multivitamin Use : Prevalence And Predictors Among Pregnenat Women In New Mexico, Sizhu Liu

Pharmaceutical Sciences ETDs

Background: Prenatal vitamin use is recommended as a necessary supplement prior to conception and throughout pregnancy. Multivitamin use in early pregnancy can significantly reduce risks for birth defects: cardiovascular defects, limb defect, urinary tract abnormalities, orofacial clefts and neural tube defects (NTDs). Sixty-nine to seventy-eight percent of women take vitamins after pregnancy recognition, while only 23-35% of women in the U.S. start to use vitamins before pregnancy recognition. Rates of NTDs by ethnicity demonstrate that Hispanics have the highest prevalence (4.2 per 10,000 births) than Non-Hispanics. (Non-Hispanic Black or African American: 3.2 per 10,000 births; Non-Hispanic Whites: 2.6 per 10,000 …

Characterizing The Local Food Environment In Albuquerque, New Mexico: A Dual Perspective Of Retailer And Consumer, Kathryn Lenzer Aug 2011

Characterizing The Local Food Environment In Albuquerque, New Mexico: A Dual Perspective Of Retailer And Consumer, Kathryn Lenzer

Geography ETDs

This research used local produce as a way to investigate the construction and meaning of the local food environment by food retailers and consumers in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The research consisted of three components. First, the observed local food environment was defined through store surveys that were conducted in 193 food retail outlets and farmers markets in the Albuquerque study area. These surveys were performed in order to collect information, through signage and other advertising materials, about how retailers defined 'local' produce. The subsequent qualitative text analysis on these materials allowed for several themes to emerge that characterized the observed …

The Expanding Ecology Of A Hot Commodity: A Century Of Changes In The New Mexican Chile Pepper, William Carleton Aug 2011

The Expanding Ecology Of A Hot Commodity: A Century Of Changes In The New Mexican Chile Pepper, William Carleton

History ETDs

Over the past century, the New Mexican chile pepper transformed from a principally local and regional crop grown by many, small scale growers into an industrial commodity on a global market. With this transformation, the ecology of the chile pepper has shifted and expanded. The actors in this ecology- the growers, the research scientists, the manufacturers of equipment, chemicals, and seeds, government legislatures, the consumers, and even the genome of the chile itself- became increasingly global with little or no ties to the local watersheds, ecosystems, and communities within the state. Driving this ecological expansion has been a close public-private …

Cabbage, Elisabeth Inman, Keenen Crummitt Aug 2011

Cabbage, Elisabeth Inman, Keenen Crummitt

USU Student Organic Farm Newsletter

The cabbage varieties we have on the farm this year are Bilko cabbage (which is similar to Napa cabbage), tatsoi, pak choi (a type of Chinese cabbage), and Red Express cabbage (which is a red cabbage variety). Cabbage is a relative of Brussels sprouts, which are almost identical in form, as well as broccoli, kohlrabi, cauliflower, collard greens and kale. Winter cabbage (another cabbage variety) can withstand winter conditions in mild regions such as in the southern United States, so cabbage can be enjoyed all year long in many parts of the world.

Rating Of Perceived Exertion And Blood Pressure Responses In Untrained And Recreationally Trained Males Following Resistance Exercise, Sunita Shrestha Aug 2011

Rating Of Perceived Exertion And Blood Pressure Responses In Untrained And Recreationally Trained Males Following Resistance Exercise, Sunita Shrestha

Student Theses and Dissertations

Resistance training has been recommended into a comprehensive fitness program that includes aerobic and flexibility exercise in order to improve potential benefits on health and performance. It has recently been shown that untrained men and women choose resistance exercise loads less than 60% of 1 RM (Repetition maximum) thus indicating that the untrained individuals may self-select resistance training loads that are insufficient to induce hypertrophy or strength gains. 22 untrained males (mean age 21.5 ± 2.57) and 25 recreationally trained males (mean age 21.04 ±1.66) participated in this study to examine difference in RPE and training load during self-selected and …

Of Unsound Mind And Body: A Statistical Test Of The Association Between Intimate Partner Violence And Chronic Physical And Mental Health Outcomes, Darryl Andre Brice Aug 2011

Of Unsound Mind And Body: A Statistical Test Of The Association Between Intimate Partner Violence And Chronic Physical And Mental Health Outcomes, Darryl Andre Brice

Dissertations (2 year embargo)

A growing body of literature, both academic and in the popular media, has focused on intimate partner violence (IPV) and its consequences. In addition to the acute physical, social, and economic consequence of IPV, IPV clearly causes great stress for IPV women. While research has shown an association between exposure to external stressors and poor chronic physical and mental health, known as the "stress-health hypothesis," few studies have extrapolated this to examine IPV as a stressor. The goal of this research is to do just that using preexisting data from the Chicago Women's Health Risk Study (CWHRS). The CWHRS is …

Study On The Electrochemical Behaviors Of Gc Electrode Modified With Carbon Nanotube-Polyelectrolytes And Its Application For Rutin Detection, Liang Hua, Xia-Qin Wu, Rong Wang

Journal of Electrochemistry

The electrochemical behaviors of rutin and ascorbic acid at single-wall carbon nanotube and polyelectrolytes (dimethyl-diallylammonium chloride, PDDA) film modified glassy carbon electrode was investigated. The cyclic voltammetric results showed that electron transfer of rutin at PDDA/SWCNTs/GC modified electrode is an adsorption-controlled process. The separation of oxidation peak potentials of rutin and ascorbic acid was more than 200 mV. The rutin concentration in the presence of AA were detected by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). The experimental results indicated that the PDDA/SWCNTs/GC modified electrode can be used for the detection of rutin in the presence of high concentration of AA. The DPV …

All Too Human: "Animal Wisdom" In Nietzsche's Account Of The Good Life, Jonathan D. Singer Aug 2011

All Too Human: "Animal Wisdom" In Nietzsche's Account Of The Good Life, Jonathan D. Singer

Between the Species

In this paper I argue that a certain understanding of “animality” – or that a certain problematization of the traditional human-animal hierarchy and divide – is central to Nietzsche’s account of the good life. Nietzsche’s philosophical project is primarily directed against those “metaphysical oppositions of values” that traditionally structure how we think, feel and live, and in this paper I submit that, for Nietzsche, the classical opposition between the human and the animal is the most basic and the most pernicious, for it undergirds the oppositional hierarchy between rationality and irrationality that has turned human life against itself. I draw …
