Usda Nutrient Data Set For Retail Beef Cuts, Marybeth L. Duvall, Seema Bhagwat, Juliette C. Howe, Joanne M. Holden, Kristine Y. Patterson
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Purpose
This data set provides retailers with a tool to find the most accurate beef nutrient data for the purpose of on-pack nutrition labeling. This data set focuses on the beef cuts identified by the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) for nutrition labeling and, in addition, some new Beef Value Cuts.
Introduction
Since 1990’s, nutrient composition data for beef products in the USDA National Nutrient Database for Standard Reference (SR) have been updated regularly. These updates have been important since changes in animal husbandry practices and industry procedures have led to the availability of leaner cuts, as well …
Social Determinants And Dynamics Of Health Inequality In Nigeria, Hyacinth E. Ichoku, Emmanuel O. Nwosu
Social Determinants And Dynamics Of Health Inequality In Nigeria, Hyacinth E. Ichoku, Emmanuel O. Nwosu
Economic and Financial Review
This paper sheds light on the social determinants of health inequality in Nigeria by quantifying the dynamic relationship between socioeconomic indicators and child anthropomorphic outcomes. Applying multivariate regression analysis and the Blinder- Oaxaca decompositions on recent demographic and health survey [DHS] data the study shows that bad health is disproportionately concentrated on the poor and some geopolitical zones of the country. Differences in wealth account for about 58.0 per cent and 33.0 per cent of differences in child nutritional and underweight status between the poor and nonpoor. Although improving over time, these differences suggest better targeted social policy reforms in …

Paleoamerican Diet, Migration And Morphology In Brazil: Archaeological Complexity Of The Earliest Americans, Sabine Eggers, Maria Parks, Gisela Grupe, Karl J. Reinhard
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
During the early Holocene two main paleoamerican cultures thrived in Brazil: the Tradição Nordeste in the semi-desertic Sertão and the Tradição Itaparica in the high plains of the Planalto Central. Here we report on paleodietary singals of a Paleoamerican found in a third Brazilian ecological setting – a riverine shellmound, or sambaqui, located in the Atlantic forest. Most sambaquis are found along the coast. The peoples associated with them subsisted on marine resources. We are reporting a different situation from the oldest recorded riverine sambaqui, called Capelinha. Capelinha is a relatively small sambaqui established along a river 60 km from …

Biotic Resistance Via Granivory: Establishment By Invasive, Naturalized, And Native Asters Reflects Generalist Preference, Dean E. Pearson, Ragan M. Callaway, John L. Maron
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Escape from specialist natural enemies is frequently invoked to explain exotic plant invasions, but little attention has been paid to how generalist consumers in the recipient range may influence invasion. We examined how seed preferences of the widespread generalist granivore Peromyscus maniculatus related to recruitment of the strongly invasive exotic Centaurea stoebe and several weakly invasive exotics and natives by conducting laboratory feeding trials and seed addition experiments in the field. Laboratory feeding trials showed that P. maniculatus avoided consuming seeds of C. stoebe relative to the 12 other species tested, even when seeds of alternative species were 53–94% smaller …

The Educational Needs And Contents Of Continuing Medical Education On Biomedical Ethics In Taiwan, Yen-Yuan Chen, Ming-Been Lee, Yu-Hui Kao, Tai-Yuan Chiu
Journal of Medical Education
Compared to the biomedical ethics education in North America/Europe, the history of formal biomedical ethics education in East Asia is relatively shorter and is still being continuously developed. It has been recognized that the societal values in North America/ Europe mainly stress individual autonomy, while the societal values in East Asian countries, as well as in Taiwan, mainly emphasize familial autonomy, honoring the value of harmonious dependence. Therefore, as compared to the health care professionals in North America/Europe, those in East Asian countries may have different interests on educational needs for biomedical ethics, as well as the ways of resolving …

Relationship Of Adipokines With Insulin Sensitivity In African Americans., Maria P Martinez Cantarin, Scott W Keith, Stephanie Deloach, Yonghong Huan, Bonita Falkner
Department of Medicine Faculty Papers
INTRODUCTION: Cytokines produced by adipose tissue, including adiponectin, have been associated with metabolic abnormalities. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship of insulin sensitivity measured by euglycemic hyperinsulinemic insulin clamp with plasma adiponectin and other adipokines in young adult African Americans.
METHODS: Participants were healthy African Americans. Anthropometric measures, blood pressure, an oral glucose tolerance test and an euglycemic hyperinsulinemic insulin clamp were performed. Insulin sensitivity measurements were adjusted for percentage of fat mass. Plasma concentrations of adiponectin, plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) were assayed on plasma from fasting blood samples. Pearson correlation coefficients and …
Are Food Subsidies Making Our Kids Fat? Tensions Between The Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act And The Farm Bill, Melissa D. Mortazavi
Are Food Subsidies Making Our Kids Fat? Tensions Between The Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act And The Farm Bill, Melissa D. Mortazavi
Washington and Lee Law Review
On December 15, 2010, President Obama signed the Healthy Hunger- Free Kids Act of 2010 (HHFKA)1 into law. It was hailed as a bipartisan success and a significant reform of childhood nutrition policy. Indeed, on its surface the law appears to make a significant shift away from the food paradigm of the past. However, upon closer examination, it fails to unwind the tangled connections between domestic eating habits and longstanding farm subsidies. This Article breaks new ground in several ways: First, it is one of the first essays in the emerging and underexplored field of food law, a crosssection of …
Invisible Jews : Does Internalized Anti-Semitism Play A Role In Unaddressed Jewish Poverty In America?, Lilith Gabrielle Wolinsky
Invisible Jews : Does Internalized Anti-Semitism Play A Role In Unaddressed Jewish Poverty In America?, Lilith Gabrielle Wolinsky
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This theoretical study looks at unexamined Jewish poverty in contemporary America through the two lenses of internalized anti-Semitism/internalized oppression/self-hate, and internalized superiority/Jewish exceptionalism/ethnocentrism with the intention of determining whether or not the constructs represented by these composite lenses have any bearing on the continued existence of Jewish poverty in the United States. Study results indicate that while the relationship between Jewish poverty and internalized Jewish oppression is not causal, unexamined internalized anti-Semitism may be a factor which prevents Jews from acknowledging and addressing this ill within their midst and as such, which perpetuates Jewish poverty. Study results also indicate that …

Biochemical And Functional Characterization Of The Ledgf/P75-Mecp2 Interaction In Tumor Cells, Lai Sum Leoh
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The lens epithelial derived growth factor p75 (LEDGF/p75) is a novel pro-survival and stress-inducible transcription co-activator that protects mammalian cells from various environmental stresses such as oxidative stress, heat shock, and serum starvation. This emerging cancer-related protein is highly expressed in prostate tumors and other tumor types and promotes resistance to chemotherapy in cancer cells. LEDGF/p75 is also involved in acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) since it interacts with HIV-1 integrase to facilitate the integration and replication of the HIV virus in human cells. In addition, LEDGF/p75 has been shown to interact with MLL (mixed lineage leukemia)/menin transcription complex in leukemia …
Myelomeningocele And The Neuropsychological Functioning Of Bilingual Children, Claudia Resendiz
Myelomeningocele And The Neuropsychological Functioning Of Bilingual Children, Claudia Resendiz
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Myelomeningocele is the most common and most severe form of spina bifida, affecting the brain and spinal cord of millions of children. Children of Hispanic background have the highest prevalence rate of this condition. Despite this fact, research that examines the cognitive profiles of Hispanic children with myelomeningocele is limited. A review on bilingualism and neurocognitive performance suggests that a cognitive advantage is present among those who are able to learn and utilize two languages. Although some have investigated the neuropsychological performance of children with myelomeningocele, research has yet to examine whether a bilingual cognitive advantage is present among bilingual …

Inpatient Stroke Rehabilitation: Ethnic And Psychosocial Predictors Of Recovery Outcome, Anna Olga Wong
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
As the new focus on preventative medicine has emerged, research continues to expand on diseases that impact physical and cognitive functioning, lead to long-term disability, and increase the risk of mortality. Stroke or cerebral vascular accident (CVA) has been identified as one of such diseases by the Centers for Disease Control (2007). Past literature has identified disparities between ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and other diseases in the recovery of stroke. The aim of the current study was to investigate the effects of ethnicity and psychosocial factors on stroke recovery during inpatient rehabilitation. The study included 446 patients who had suffered an …

In response, academia and professional organizations have developed curricula and statements intended to bolster professionalism. Meanwhile little is known about practicing dentists’ attitudes or participation in health-related civic matters. Objectives: This study seeks to examine the importance Loma Linda University (LLU) dental graduates place on public roles, their reported participation in …
Integrating The Development Of Children And Gestalt Therapy, Jennifer J. Thompson
Integrating The Development Of Children And Gestalt Therapy, Jennifer J. Thompson
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
There are many theories that have contributed to what we know about the development of children; for instance, theoretical diversity supports the complexities of human nature. A child's developmental level will impact his ability to relate. Gestalt theory supports the child's phenomenological view by focusing on the here-and-now of what is happening in the therapeutic environment. Most of what a child will do is in response to a need or want. The child will work toward fulfilling that need. The child may develop maladaptive ways to fulfill his needs based on the environment in which he lives. Gestalt play therapy …
The Application Of Dialectical Behavior Therapy To Chronic Pain Management, Jacob S. Iwaszewski
The Application Of Dialectical Behavior Therapy To Chronic Pain Management, Jacob S. Iwaszewski
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Pain affects more than 50 million Americans annually, costs over 150 billion dollars each year in healthcare and legal expenses, and results in decreased work productivity and missed work days (Ballantyne, 2006; Boll, Raczynski, & Leviton, 2004; Thom, 2004). It is estimated that chronic pain negatively impacts 15% to 33% of the US population (Bokarius et al., 2008). Third-wave acceptance-based therapies, such as Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), have demonstrated significant improvements in mental health functioning for a variety of populations (Carmody & Baer, 2008; Cusens, Duggan, Thome, & Burch, 2010). DBT, one of the primary treatment modalities for Borderline Personality …

Substantial Equivalence Assessment Of Transgenic Corn Plants, Martina Garda
Substantial Equivalence Assessment Of Transgenic Corn Plants, Martina Garda
Student Theses and Dissertations
Transgenic crops are regulated until they are judged to be as safe as non-transgenic plants. To grow them without permits, they must attain regulatory approval. . A lot of data are needed to show "substantial equivalence" and safety . This work deals with corn lines that contain cellulase genes. We hypothesize that no difference exists between Genetically Engineered (GE) and non-Genetically Engineered (non-GE) corn seeds at the morphological, protein, and DNA levels, except for the protein expressed specifically from the corresponding gene. This research will address concerns in commercializing GE crops, such as those containing a gene for either an …

Physical And Behavioural Abilities Of Commensal Rodents Related To The Design Of Selective Rodenticide Bait Stations, William C. Pitt, Robert T. Sugihara, Laura C. Driscoll, Daniel S. Vice
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Design of selective bait stations to deliver rodenticide bait is often proposed for management of non-target animal access, but much of the information on the behavioural and physical capabilities of rodents relative to station access has not been readily available or is based on unpublished, informal observations or anecdotes repeated for many years. We studied the climbing and jumping abilities of Polynesian Rats (Rallus exulans), Norway Rats (R. norvegicus), Roof Rats (R. rallus), and House Mice (Mus musculus), focused on applications for eradication of these invasive rodents from island ecosystems in the …
