Resource Description And Access: From Aacr To Rda, F. Tim Knight

Librarian Publications & Presentations

The new cataloguing guidelines Resource Description and Access (RDA) have recently been released and are set to replace the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules. An evaluation period led by the Library of Congress is currently underway and it is likely that the implementation of RDA will begin sometime in mid- 2011. This paper looks briefly at the origins of RDA, provides a high level overview of RDA and reviews some of the major differences that cataloguers and library users can expect to find between RDA and AACR2.

The Formulation Of Naturally Occuring Polyphenolic Nutraceutical Agents Using Hot-Melt Extrusion, Aditya Duvuri Jan 2011

The Formulation Of Naturally Occuring Polyphenolic Nutraceutical Agents Using Hot-Melt Extrusion, Aditya Duvuri

Open Access Master's Theses

The process of pharmaceutical formulation is constantly evolving as many new active compounds are being discovered in order to overcome the challenges associated with producing viable dosage forms to reach the target tissues by these compounds. Perhaps, the most important property for a drug to be effectively formulated into a dosage form is adequate miscibility and solubility which may be in an organic solvent vehicle but is mainly in water. Water solubility along with solubility in the body fluids is critical from the point of view of achieving the desired levels of the drug in the body for effective therapy …

Decotitles, The Animated Discourse Of Fox's Recent Anglophonic Internationalism, D. T. Kofoed Jan 2011

Decotitles, The Animated Discourse Of Fox's Recent Anglophonic Internationalism, D. T. Kofoed

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

My paper examines the radical, popular reconception of the subtitle's status initiated by films like Tony Scott's 2004 Man on Fire, Timur Bekmambetov's Night Watch [Nochnoy Dozor] and its 2006 sequel, and Danny Boyle's 2008 Best Picture winning Slumdog Millionaire. Subtitles have been redirected from their customarily subsidiary, external position to become a central aspect of the filmic mise-en-scene. The establishment of anti-conventional decotitles represents the possibility of a stabile third term in the debates over subbing versus dubbing. A new aesthetic paradigm has emerged—one which places emphasis not on translation and ventriloquism, a confrontation with …

Call Center Cultures And The Transnationalization Of Affective Labor, John Muthyala Jan 2011

Call Center Cultures And The Transnationalization Of Affective Labor, John Muthyala

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

This paper examines how the transnationalization of affective labor has become central to the Information Technology (IT) of our global world. It studies the role of American culture in call centers in India, a crucial sector of the IT industry linking the U.S. to technopolises in several countries across the world. The documentary Diverted to Delhi, which focuses on the setting up and managing of call centers, shows how a particular itinerary of culture gets deployed in order to train potential employees to learn English, become familiar with American culture, develop new professional identities by adopting Western names, and …

The Effect Of Biological Versus Environmental Causal Explanations On The Stigmatization Of Major Depression And Anorexia Nervosa, Briana Borenstein

Psychology Honors Papers

This study investigated how biological and environmental causal explanations affect the stigmatization of college students described to have major depression and anorexia nervosa.  Participants (38 male and 87 female college students) read a vignette about a college student with either major depression or anorexia nervosa that provided either a biological or environmental causal explanation for the disorder. Then, they completed a Social Distancing Scale; a Treatment Recommendations Scale; a Personal Responsibility Beliefs, Pity, and Anger Questionnaire; a Causal Attributions Scale; a Familiarity with Mental Illness Questionnaire; and a Demographics Questionnaire. Results indicated that participants stigmatized the target with anorexia more …

“Not One Looks Like My Daughter!”: How American Girl Makes History Hegemony, Nicole Laconte Jan 2011

“Not One Looks Like My Daughter!”: How American Girl Makes History Hegemony, Nicole Laconte

History Honors Papers

American Girl markets dolls and books toward girls. Their original product line, which features historical characters, mobilizes history to teach moral lessons. This paper breaks down these morals to search for hegemony, a discourse that marginalizes minority readers. In this quest to uncover hegemony, the paper deals with issues of narrative perspective and socialization. Regarding narrative perspective, the paper asks, “Whom do these books deem normal in America? Whom do these books deem other in America?” Regarding socialization issues, this paper asks, “What value and behaviors do these books condone as part of acceptable American Girlhood? What values and behaviors …
